don't call people annoying

the moment the word ‘annoying’ leaves your mouth, it enters their brain and wreaks havoc everywhere

it sends their thoughts into overdrive, the same word playing on repeat annoying a n n o y i n g a n n o y i n g and within seconds it’s all they can see, hear and think everywhere.

they’ll immediately turn a quiet scarlet, their lips tightly sealing themselves together as their eyes turn downcast, brimming with tears of embarrassment and rejection. they’ll begin to question everything they say and do and whether there’s a point in it at all they wouldn’t want to annoy anybody.

everything will seem unnecessary do they really need to ask that? do they really need to make that joke? do they really need to state their opinion? do they really need to speak?

it will build up with violent storms of fear echoing inside their head, the toxic adjective playing on repeat like a broken record, screaming in their ears until there’s only one question left unanswered;

do they really need to exist at all?

they will become introverted, desperate to change every aspect of their personality to fit the restricted boundaries of the society that outcasted them until they’re barely there at all.

their once long and painted nails will be sore and bitten

their brightly coloured shirts will be replaced with neutral shades of grey and brown

their once eager smile will disappear, a small frown etched in its place

they’ll no longer say hello or wave to people out of pure consideration, in fear that the simple and friendly action may annoy them

everything they say or do will suddenly become a whirlpool of anxiety and chaos, the constant reminder that no one really wants them around playing in the back of their mind every time they open their mouth to speak for the first time in days.

their friends and family will notice the changes but will be unable to do anything in fear that they will curl in on themselves even further

their confidence and grades will drop and everyone will soon start to miss who they used to be

everyone will miss all the traits they once deemed annoying.

but words can’t be unsaid. and no matter how hard you try, once that seemingly harmless term is used it stays with that person for the rest of their lives.

from the moment that word is directed at them, everything changes, and no one will be able to control the consequences that follow

because you have no idea what a persons been through, what they’ve been targeted for and their situation currently

the littlest of things could send anyone down the rabbit hole of madness and insecurity

even if it’s just a word

don’t call people annoying.
