Doctor Cha (2023)

I got a fever, and the only prescription is more melodramas!

I usually hate love triangles, but it wasn’t so bad with this show. I think it helped that the entire premise was so unbelievable that I was able to just sit back and embrace the chaos.

What Worked

The show did a great job at letting you know what you were in for right from the first episode—an over the top, unrealistic situation with fun characters. The entire plot was building towards this dramatic train wreck where the protagonist (who was almost too good to be true) hit the final straw, and gave the terrible husband and mother-in-law exactly what they deserved. And that whole part of the story was completely engrossing.

What Didn’t Work

The writers didn’t bungle the ending, I still liked it, but I think they played it a little safe. All of the messed up relationships that were causing the delicious drama wrapped up on mostly good terms. That’s a nice story in a way, but I don’t think it was as cathartic.

Still, it’s a better story than real life, where men like the cheating husband often end up prospering, without really learning their lesson.

The Performances

Uhm Jung-hwa as “Doctor Mom” Cha Jeong-suk. I first saw this actress in “Our Blues” and I really liked her in that. Though the writing in this show isn’t quite as good, her performance in this show was just as good and even better in some respects. Really fun to watch this actress at work.

Kim Byung-chul as “Dirty Cheating Doctor” Seo In-ho. His character was supposed to be both pathetic and hate-able and the actor hit the brief very well. A lot of the charm in this show was watching him get his just desserts and suffer, while still being an unrepentant jerk.

It’s not exactly hate watching when the show clearly wants you to hate him. The fact that I never got tired of watching him, shows just how good his acting was.

Myung Se-bin as “Lady Cheating Doctor” Choi Seung-hee. This actor had a tough job to do. The writers kept shifting her motivation and relationships around and overall she did a good job making it work. I think her best scenes were with Eun-Seo, but she was still okay to watch overall.

Min Woo-hyuk as “The Good Doctor” Roy Kim. I enjoyed his performance. It was fun watching him go in and ruffle everyone’s feathers by being a good guy who doesn’t take anyone’s nonsense. I think his arc mostly peaked early though and he was less interesting towards the end of the series.

Song Ji-ho as “Doctor Son” Seo Jung-min. He had some great comic moments and I enjoyed watching his relationship with the girlfriend. It did take some time for him to really get interesting, though.

Jo Ah-ram as “Doctor Girlfriend” Jeon So-ra. I loved this character. I really enjoyed her relationships with both Jeong-suk and Jung-min.

Baek Joo-hee as “Doctor Bestie” Baek Mi-hee. A good example of how a good actor can make even a side character interesting. I especially liked the episode where she helped Yi-rang after she got in a fight.

Park Joon-geum as “The Worst Mother-in-Law” Kwak Ae-sim. I really disliked this character. Which means she did a good job because that was exactly what I was supposed to feel.

Kim Mi-kyung as “The Best Omma” Oh Deok-rye. She’s played a role like this so many times and yet I never get tired of seeing her because she still keeps it from being boring or repetitive. A national treasure.

Lee Seo-yeon as “The Good Daughter” Seo Yi-rang. She did a good job with the role she was given and had some great moments, but there were times when she disappeared in a scene. Pretty good overall though.

So A-rin as “The Best Daughter” Choi Eun-seo. They played it like she was some kind of emotionally unstable child in the first few episodes, which was unfortunate because the character was actually one of the most interesting and honest characters in the show. And she was mistreated by everyone.

The show was at its best when they let this actor loose, and I was really impressed by her performance.

Everyone Else. The show did have a few good moments for its minor characters, but most of the time they weren’t memorable or doing anything important.

TL; DR:

This is a show made for people who like melodramas. If you’re able to turn off the nitpicking part of your brain and enjoy the ride, it’s pretty dang fun.

I am a huge fan of historical Dramas. But I believe it is rather hard to find one that fits your watchlist. There are political dramas, romantic comedies and Dramas based on true Stories. Whether you like classic KDrama Plotlines or not so typically Stories I am sure you will find something on this list.

Please keep in mind that this list is only made in my opinion and from what I truly thought about these Dramas. If you have any recommendations for other dramas that fit in this list, please let me now!

- The Last Empress [황후의 품격] // 2018 by Joo Dong-Min

A Drama that plays in our period of time but can nonetheless be called a history drama. It displays how a monarchy would function in modern South Korea. The Story is about an unsuccessful and naive musical actress who marries the Emperor of the Korean Empire. Her character seems clumsy and featherbrained but being the main act in this drama her role is bond to change. This series starts of rather light and comedic however it'll change in later episodes as the Plot develops into an investigation storyline.

Main Actresses and Actors: Jang Na-Ra as Oh Sunny // Choi Jin-Hyuk as Na Wang-Sik // Shin Sung-Rok as Emperor Lee Hyuk

- The Tale of Nokdu [조선로코 - 녹두전] // 2019 by Kim Dong-Hwi

This Drama plays in the Joseon Dynasty and tells the story about Nokdu, a young man who wants to find the truth about his birth. On his way he disguises himself as a woman in order to enter a widow village where the answers to his questions lie. Given that this Story is a romantic comedy we also have our female lead character, a young woman living in a Kisaeng house next to the widow village. As the Plot develops, more and more interesting characters are introduced but the storyline lacks cliffhangers and overall interesting turning points. Nonetheless it's a light and fun to watch Drama.

Main Actresses and Actors: Jang Dong-Yoon as Jeon Nok-Du // Kim So-Hyun as Dong Dong-Joo // Kang Tae-Oh as Prince Neungyang

- My Country: The new Age [나의 나라] // 2019 by Kim Jin-Won

This is by far my favorite History Drama. The story revolves around two good friends but their different ranks in society leads them on two different paths. It's a story about a big revolution but it isn't the outcome that is important. This Plot has everything: Epic fighting scenes, an unbreakable friendship, an interesting plot with excellent cliffhangers and unpredictable turning points. All characters are unique and have their own plotlines which makes you even more anticipated to watch. The lead actors are well known figures and fit the two main characters perfectly.

Main Actresses and Actors: Yang Se-Jong as Seo Hwi // Woo Do-Hwan as Nam Sun-Ho // Kim Seol-Hyun as Han Hee-Jae

- Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung [신입사관 구해령] // 2019 by Kang Il-Soo & Han Hyun-Hee

A romantic drama about a rookie historian and an abandoned prince who secretly works as an author of love novels. Although it doesn't start of very interesting the many small plotlines lining to an connected end make it worth to watch till the last episode. Fans of Astro will definitely have a joy watching this cute drama, with Cha Eun-Woo as the main lead and adorable clumsy prince. But also the historical background is rather interesting as we don't see this kind of topic often. After all it's more a romantic comedy than epic story but still entertaining to watch.

- The King: Eternal Monarch [더 킹: 영원의 군자] // 2020 by Baek Sang-Hoon, Jung Ji-Hyun & Yoo Je-Won

Another modern monarchy story taking place in two parallel worlds which gives this drama fantasy vibes. The drama tells the story of detective Jeong Tae-Eul and the Emperor Lee Gon who meet each other under very interesting circumstances. Because this story takes places in different times and worlds it comes across confusing in the beginning but the heartwarming characters and love story make up for this. This drama has beautiful cinematics and interesting plot twists not to mention great actors like Lee Min-Ho and Woo Do-Hwan. In the end it's a classic romantic love Drama and less a historical piece.

- Hymn of Death [사의 찬미] // 2018 by Park Soo-Jin

Hymne of Death is based on a true story and takes place in 1920, when Korea was under Japanese Occupation. The Drama tells the tragic love story of Soprano Yun Sim-Deok and playwright Kim Woo-Jin. Going as far as calling it the Korean Romeo and Juliet this short Story is full of dramatic plotting and beautiful poetic scenes. The historical part doesn't come to short and shows us Korea in periods of change but also the harsh reality of the Japanese invasion.

Um toque de agressividade

CAPÍTULO UM

Estava irritadiço, os nós em meus dedos rangeram e eu aproveitei o montante de neve para jogar o maldito cigarro no chão e amassa-lo – apagando os vestígios de um aluno rebelde. Olhei de relance para Taemin e assenti rápido, eu não queria trazer mais problemas para o grupo, mas vejam bem, todos aos redores de Dongnae-gu sabiam sobre a minha falta de paciência para erros que só uma criança de três anos cometeria – a fama de carniceiro não veio atoa.

Olhei para cima, o clima estava parado, acompanhando o ritmo lento em meu peito. Não era tão excitante quanto antes, aos dez, roubar era uma brincadeira ensinada pelos hyung’s do instituto, mas quando se cresce e entende que roubava para não morrer de fome, a diversão acaba e passa a ser sobrevivência.

Os flocos de neve caiam sobre os meus ombros e deslizavam para baixo, encobrindo qualquer rastro que nossas botas tenham deixado no chão – significava que já tinha dado tempo para que os amigos de Jung-Ho sentissem a sua falta. A escola estava um tanto vazia, os mais velhos não queriam que seus filhos fossem obrigados a irem para longe com um tempo horrível desses, mas o que dizer dos órfãos? Bom, isso mesmo, aqui estamos nós, presos e famintos, devorando uns aos outros.

Andei a passos lentos, sentindo a neve me puxar para baixo a cada investida. Toquei nos braços de Taemin e os substitui por minhas mãos. Jung-Ho estava quente, diria que pelo nervosismo o seu organismo estava respondendo agressivamente aos estímulos físicos. Os olhos arredondados subiram até a minha face e eu consegui sentir o gosto do seu desespero, inundado pelas lágrimas que escorriam pelo rosto sujo de terra.

Taemin rosnou para o menino de joelhos e avançou novamente, puxando os fios desgrenhados para trás com tanta força que Jung prendeu a respiração para não gritar. Fora um aviso, não olhe para o meu hyung com esses olhos imundos, ele teria dito em palavras se achasse que valesse a pena. O corpo robusto de Jung-Ho pendeu para o lado e seus braços se esticaram para tentarem se apoiar no chão. Vislumbrei as pontas de seus dedos, todos sujos e ensanguentados – queimados pela neve que os enterrava.

Depois de alguns segundos Taemin o soltou, limpou as mãos e as guardou nos bolsos do casaco azul. Ele não ousou olhar para mim novamente.

O arrastamos até os fundos do bloco C – ninguém nos impediu quando invadimos a sua sala na hora do intervalo, nem mesmo os monitores, pois todos sabiam que roubar dos moradores não era permitido e machucar mulheres e crianças muito menos. O imbecil conseguiu quebrar as principais regras de uma vez só. Então não podíamos ter piedade por essa alma mergulhada em lama.

Eu, como o segundo na linha de comando do instituto, era o responsável pela aplicação das penalidades – sejam elas quais fossem. As freiras confiavam em nós para cuidarmos dos mais novos e os financiadores do orfanato gostavam do resultado – crianças fortes e inteligentes o bastante para entrarem em uma faculdade, ou até fazer alguns trabalhinhos sujos. Éramos treinados como soldados, aquela maldita igreja no final do bairro não era um local saudável para se praticar a sua religião.

Taemin deu leves tapas em meus ombros e se juntou a Baek-Ho, este que fumava silenciosamente seu cigarro de menta. Seus olhos cor de âmbar se chocaram com os meus e ele sorriu pequeno, como se me incentivasse a apertar o pescoço de Jung – aquele hyung era o terceiro na linha de comando e para mim, ele não deveria ter tanto poder sobre as mãos.

Voltei a olhar para frente, Jung respirava com dificuldade pela boca e os músculos de sua face estavam retraídos em uma careca horrenda, e sim, eu queria machucá-lo, quebrar os seus ossos e tritura-los com os meus dentes – rasgando a sua pele como um animal.

Alisei a pele macia, raspando os dedos pelo pomo de adão e descendo pelos ombros até o peito descoberto. Ajoelhei diante de seus olhos, admirado pelos desenhos grafados a faca naquela região – Taemin sempre gostou de se exibir, e agora não seria diferente. Jung-Ho estava cansado, as lufadas de ar saiam pesadas dos lábios ressecados, suas bochechas, queimadas pelo frio, mostravam rastros de tapas e sangue seco. O garoto era um psicopata.

Só assim para ele entender – a dor o ensinaria já que as palavras não surtiriam efeito em sua mente defeituosa.

- Sabe que odeio machucar um dos meus. – Murmurei, apertando vagarosamente seus ombros. O sistema nos catalogava como animais, sempre selecionando os que tinham um melhor desenvolvimento nos treinos físicos e mentais do instituto, para depois descartar os de pontuação inferior. Então, nos juntamos, criamos o nosso sistema, nossas regras e deveres, isso diminuiu os descartes. E quando um descumpre, deve pagar com o que tem de mais precioso. – Mas você não me ajuda a sentir empatia. O que o fez pensar que não acharíamos o corpo deles? Ou que a polícia não viria falar com o chefe? As ordens foram claras, hyung, deveríamos fazer com você o que fez com eles. Mas nenhum de nós quer dormir com você, isso seria sujo, nojento.

Estremeci, rangendo os dentes em ódio. Sendo levado pelas sensações, segurei o seu queixo e o puxei para mais perto. Ele fedia a álcool e sangue, uma mistura um tanto peculiar. Forcei seu corpo para baixo e o grito de dor soou como música, mas ele não podia chamar atenção, então o calei com a outra mão. Já deitado, me sentei em sua barriga e dei um leve impulso, o fazendo arfar a procura de ar.

Assim que senti a espessura dos ossos de sua bacia eu me perguntei se as crianças que eu treinava conseguiriam chegar a esse ponto – se elas um dia se tornariam tão carniceiras quanto e Lee.

O roxo em suas costelas me dizia que Taemin tinha fraturado algumas vértebras e que elas poderiam estar comprimindo os pulmões do mais velho. Tateie a região e o urro de dor comprovou a minha teoria.

- Três no máximo. – Disse Lee.

Assenti sem olha-lo. Taemin tinha um conhecimento vasto sobre anatomia humana, eu confiava em seus julgamentos.

- Os corpos das vítimas foram achados abandonados atrás de um lixão, queimados pelo frio e destroçados pelas suas mãos. – Jung-Ho começou a negar freneticamente enquanto se balançava de um lado para o outro, tentando se livrar do meu peso sobre a sua barriga. E eu pulei mais uma vez, assistindo contente os seus lábios sem cor se abrirem em um grito mudo. Suas pernas se arquearam e as mãos torcidas tentaram agarrar o invisível que o ajudaria a aliviar a dor.

Se fosse qualquer outra pessoa em meu lugar, talvez acreditasse na face chorosa de Jung, talvez o coração dessa pessoa pudesse vir a ser tão puro que o deixaria ir. Mas eu o conhecia, ele não passava de um monstro devorador de criancinhas e mulheres – um demônio fetichista.

– Você os abusou sexualmente quando viu que não conseguira roubar aquela loja. Eles eram uma família, Hyung, Mãe e filho sofreram algo que eu não posso nem imaginar, então tive que quebrar as suas mãos. – Grunhi, as pegando para enfatizar o meu feito. Mais um grito estrondoso cortou sua garganta, vindo acompanhado das risadas dos meninos. – E agora eu acho que vou ter que tirar o seu bem mais precioso.

Larguei suas mãos e apoiei as minhas em seu peito cheio de hematomas. O mais velho parecia prestes a perde a consciência quando deslizei meus dedos ásperos pelas suas partes intimas cobertas pela calça de algodão escolar. Assim que Jung-Ho entendeu sobre o que eu me referia, as lamurias e berros desesperados saíram de controle. Seu corpo se remexia tanto que tive que me por de pé para assisti-lo implorar por misericórdia.

- Não vai ser tão ruim assim. – Eu disse, olhando friamente para o sorriso assustador de Baek-Ho. As mãos cobertas pelas luvas de couro seguravam uma adaga de cabo prateado, a mesma que todos ganhávamos quando a maioridade chegava. Ele olhou para mim, pedindo silenciosamente permissão para brincar com o nosso transgressor. E eu dei de ombros, tentando ao máximo não me perturbar com o que teria que ver a seguir. – Pense pelo lado bom, se você fosse pego pelos patrocinadores, o que fizemos com você aqui não passaria de brincadeira de criança. Estamos sendo bonzinhos.

Dongnae-gu não era uma cidade sem lei, ela só era gerenciada pelas pessoas erradas – e o erro no sistema éramos nós. Cada palavra saiu de meus lábios como um texto decorado, adorei ver a sua pele sendo rasgada pelas minhas mãos, mas cortar as suas genitálias, eu já achava pretensioso de mais – um trabalho que nunca conseguiria fazer.

Assim que Baek-Ho agarrou as pernas do menino os gritos de Jung-Ho mancharam o meu belo quadro e eu segui Taemin para longe daquele lugar, deixando Baek desfrutar do único momento em que poderia usar suas práticas sádicas sem ser julgado.

Já fora do perímetro do bloco C, Taemin parou de andar e se virou para mim.

- Por quanto tempo teremos que fazer isso, hyung? – O ouvi perguntar, a máscara caindo aos poucos até que suas pernas fraquejaram e eu o segurei por instinto. Eu o criei, essa criança cresceu por debaixo de minhas assas e eu não podia deixa-lo ir dessa forma. Lee ainda não entendia que certos pensamentos deveriam ser guardados no fundo de nossa alma para nunca emergirem. – Eu não aguento mais, ele... Ele vai morrer Ki-Bum-ha, e nós fizemos isso com ele.

Taemin segurou em meus ombros e escondeu o rosto na curvatura de meu pescoço. Os soluços eram calmos e contidos, envolvi sua cintura e afaguei os fios castanhos.

- Não está ficando mais fácil.- Disse em tom rouco.

Suas lágrimas aqueceram a minha pele e eu quase me deixei levar.

- Ele abusou sexualmente de uma criança de nove anos, Saeng. – Disse entre dentes, lutando para me fazer entender de que sim, eu estava certo em tortura-lo. Afastei o seu corpo e segurei o seu rosto com as minhas duas mãos, fazendo com que as íris negras focassem em mim. – Jung-Ho merecia muito mais que uma castração.

Ele riu sarcasticamente da minha raiva e tirou as minhas mão de si. Sua face mostrava nojo e rancor, e eu vi que falhei em seu treinamento - falhei pois lhe mostrei mais amor do que dor.

- Você não sabe. – Ele gritou. – Não somos juízes para determinar quem vive e quem morre. Por isso a sociedade criou regras para que não existisse esse anarquismo fodido!

Fechei os olhos e esfreguei as têmporas com força. Respirei fundo e avancei. Se não fosse eu ali Taemin já estaria engolindo terra, eu teria que fazê-lo entender esse ponto. Envolvi novamente sua cintura e o apertei contra mim – ele era o meu saeng, uma parte vital de mim, ele precisava compreender.

- Se você quiser preservar essa sua vida de merda, acho melhor calar a boca. – Rosnei, e, de repente, percebi que os gritos de Jung-Ho tinham cessado. – Não somos juízes, sei disso, mas não venha defender aquele monstro para mim, criança.

- E o que nos torna diferente dele? – Taemim estava querendo o impossível, mudar o sistema era algo que nunca passou pela minha cabeça. Não embarcaria em suas fantasias de contos de fadas.

Dei dois passos para trás e fiz um sinal de silêncio, apontando para trás de si com o queixo.

- Nada. – Disse por fim.

Ficamos em calados até que os passos pesados de Baek-Ho foram ouvidos ao longe.

- Agora enxuga esse rosto e cala a porra da boca. O Baek-hyung não é como eu, nunca te daria razão ou espaço para bate papo. Fique calado e guarde esses pensamentos só para você.

Ele fez o que eu disse rapidamente e ajeitou a compostura, arrastou os pés até ficar do meu lado e entrelaçou o seu braço esquerdo com o meu. Ele estava com medo.

- Vamos, crianças. – O mais velho surgiu por detrás da cerca, limpando as luvas em um pano coberto por sangue. – Já liguei para a emergência.

Taemin arregalou os olhos em surpresa e olhou para mim. Claro que ele não esperava que fôssemos chamar alguém para socorrer Jung-Ho, e muito menos sabe que Baek fizera um corte tão limpo que se Jung fosse atendido por um bom médico, eles poderiam reimplantar o seu pênis – o frio ajudaria a conservar seu órgão decepado.

Baek sorriu pela cara de espanto do mais novo, tirou um pequeno aparelho telefônico do bolso e o esmagou com os pés. Senti o meu estômago embrulhar, mas não o impedi quando o mesmo segurou em meus braços e me puxou para junto de si, me envolvendo em um abraço apertado. Ele fedia a sangue, nem um dos melhores perfumes tiraria esse maldito cheiro dele.

- Hoje foi um dia muito produtivo. – Ele me olhou de lado e depois agarrou Taemin. – Pena que vocês não participaram da melhor parte. – Taemin tinha razão, aquilo não estava ficando mais fácil. – Hoje a sopa de boi é por minha conta.

E antes que o mais velho pudesse sequer começar a andar, Taemin se virou apressado e jogou todo o café da manhã pelo chão. O garoto tremia enquanto eu dava leve tapas em suas costas para tentar apartar os solavancos.

- É, você realmente ficou com a parte mais divertida, Hyung. – Eu disse e ele sorriu sombriamente e veio me ajudar a levantar o mais novo, colocando-o em suas costas. – Vamos, o senhor Kim vai saber cuidar desses vestígios.

Joguei um pouco de neve em cima do vômito e me juntei aos meninos.

“Beyond Evil” là một trong những bộ phim tâm lý tội phạm Hàn Quốc hay hiếm hoi vẫn giữ được sức hút cho đến những tập cuối cùng. Cốt truyện chặt chẽ, lôi cuốn và hoàn toàn gây nghiện, chương trình này sẽ khiến bạn phải ngồi trên ghế của mình, nổi da gà. Nó bắt đầu, như hầu hết các câu chuyện, tại thị trấn Manyang yên bình, nơi cái ác lần đầu tiên nở rộ vào 20 năm trước. Phụ nữ mất tích, không tìm thấy gì ngoài đầu ngón tay.
