it's the cross-dressing of nokdu that does it for me in the tale of nokdu. tbh it suggests that dong-ju is much more fluid in her feelings than the simple mlw narrative implies. she loves a man that dresses like a woman, that passes as a woman for the vast majority of the show.
in parallel, he loves a woman that dresses as a man, that passes as a man so that she can avenge her family. and it's the fact that she dresses as a man that leaves such a strong impression on him upon meeting her again at the kisaeng place.
i think the gender dynamics, the fluidity of emotions were so good in this show, it makes the lead pairing so interesting. on the other hand, a lot of secondary interactions between the characters become layered with deeper meaning due to the constant cross-dressing of the main characters, who appear to only be able to achieve their goals through their incessant back-and-forths between dressing as a woman or dressing as a man. for nearly the entire show, it's as if transgressing these lines are essential parts to their own identity. it is the way they choose to be able to fully navigate their worlds and cope with their quests for something else (both seeking a form of revelation by the way).
if we take this into account: she loves a man who dresses as a woman while trying to learn the truth about who he is. he loves a woman who dresses as a man while trying to reveal who she is. and their identity crises are both related to the king (symbolically the patriarchal figure). the concept is actually sooooo powerful.
it's such a good show, way more nuanced and complex than meets the eye.
(also huuuuge props for featuring only-women spaces <3)

The Tale of Nokdu
Tumblr media
The story is about a man trying to discover his identity and a king fighting to protect his throne, with their fates intertwined in unexpected ways.
Since childhood, Nokdu has lived in secrecy on a remote island with his family. When assassins attack, he sets off on a journey to uncover who is targeting his family—and to find out who he really is.
While the premise isn’t entirely new, The Tale of Nokdu executes it exceptionally well. Jang Dong Yoon stars as Nokdu, a young man determined to solve the mystery behind the attacks on his family. His quest leads him to a village exclusively for widows, where he must disguise himself as one of them. Impressively, Dong Yoon transforms into a convincingly beautiful widow while retaining a sense of masculinity in his portrayal.
In the widow’s village, Nokdu meets Dong Dong Joo, played by Kim So Hyun. She has her own troubles to unravel, and the two become housemates after she discovers his secret. Adding to the drama is Cha Yool Moo, a nobleman played by Kang Tae Oh, who has his sights set on Dong Joo.
This drama offers a charming mix of action, romance, and emotional depth. Jang Dong Yoon delivers a standout performance, excelling in both comedic moments and scenes of inner turmoil. The cast is star-studded, including Lee Seung Joon, Song Geon Hee, and Hwang In Yeop, who all shine in their roles.
Although The Tale of Nokdu premiered in 2019, it holds up remarkably well today. As a self-confessed Kang Tae Oh fan, I’m rewatching all his work—and while Yool Moo wasn’t my favorite character, Kang Tae Oh portrayed him so well that I found myself thoroughly hating him by the end! That level of performance is hard to pull off. 😂
Overall, The Tale of Nokdu impressed me with its excellent acting, compelling script, and engaging action sequences. For me, Kang Tae Oh was a true scene-stealer. If you haven’t watched this gem yet, I highly recommend it. You can find it on Viki.

Musings on The Tale of Nokdu and the subversion of the narrative
Putting spoilers under the cut, due to information regarding the ending.
It has been more than three years since I watched The Tale of Nokdu, and I still find myself thinking about it from time to time. Not just due to the ways the show played with gender, the romance or the lovely leads.
No, what keeps me thinking of The Tale of Nokdu now and again is the way it subverted the narratives we expect.
Here, we have a king's son who has been deprived of his birthright. It is his role to fight to claim the throne, or die trying.
There, we have a heroine who lost her entire family to an unfair purge. It is her role to gain her revenge and justice at long last, or die trying.
In a story like this there should be two possible outcomes: Glory or Tragedy.
Our hero and heroine are expected to fight until the end for their righteous goals. They will either triumph over evil for a happy ending or perish in the process. Either option would be satisfying for the audience, although in different ways. When we see a story of this nature, we expect the story might go in one of these directions.
Yet in The Tale of Nokdu, it does not.
Our hero and heroine do fight to achieve their goals, they try their hardest and they are prepared to sacrifice themselves, yet there is a point in the narrative when they realise that they cannot win.
They have to make a choice at that point, and they choose to give up, thereby walking away from their doomed narrative.
Nokdu neither gains his father's love nor his throne. Dong Joo does not achieve her long sought revenge. In the end, the villain wins and begins a new reign over the kingdom.
It should be an unsatisfying ending by all rights yet it's not. Nokdu and Dong Joo will live out their lives happily and simply with their chosen found family and if they are lucky they will be forgotten by history.
The ending is so satisfying precisely because it is the best choice they could possibly make, it's a rejection of the idea that failure is unacceptable and that glory must be achieved.
It's a subversion of the narrative that I would like to see more often.
