Big Changes

I don’t even know what I want to write right now but I’m so completely muddled. I have no idea what I should do. I have a huge life changing decision to make in front of me. It could either go right and change my life for the better or go completely wrong and fuck things up for me even more. On top of it all I’m mentally unstable. I’m not ready for this right now but if I let this opportunity pass me by I might regret it for the rest of my life. I wish I could tell the future so I could just know what the right decision is. Stay in MD or move to CA? Maybe I should do a pro/con list. I don’t know. I feel like my natural choice is always “play it safe, just stay where you are, etc.” so if I try to do that I’ll just end up filling up the con side and barely filling in the pro side. I’m a pessimist unfortunately. 

Well the opportunity is to move to SoCal to live for free on a pot farm and grow for a woman who is a good friend of my boyfriends mom. I know it sounds like a dream and I should be jumping on it immediately, but there’s so much that keeps making me sketched out about it. I’ll just make a list because it’s easier:

1. It’s in Victorville, CA (closer to Baldy Mesa). When you google things about Victorville, CA it’s not the nicest area. It’s in San Bernadino County which is where my boyfriend is from and the whole reason he moved was because of meth heads everywhere and the cartel killing people- his friends included. The crime rate is kind of scary - especially break ins which is one of my big fears.

2. The woman was supposed to send us pictures of the trailer (which is actually not a trailer per se but I’ll get to that) a few days after we spoke. She never did and also never bothered to text/call us and tell us anything. So we call her about a week later. She’d just gotten chemo so we thought she might’ve been too weak and we thought we’d give her some time. We call her maybe a week-week 1/2 after we first spoke..no answer. She texts us later that day and says “she hasn’t forgotten about us but she’s having trouble getting someone off the property among other things” - that is sketchy. Who’s on the property now, why are they there, why won’t they leave, are there going to be sketchy people like that living on the property with us? - all questions I have now and can’t stop asking myself.

3. It’s not a trailer, it’s a camper. Wouldn’t be a big deal IF we weren’t also bringing 3 cats with us but we are. 2 adults and 3 cats in a CAMPER? Small, cramped, miserable. There’s also most likely no utilities so we’ll have to go to a laundromat to do clothes, or as my bf said “we’ll wash clothes in the bathtub, fuck that” .. who knows what’s up with the kitchen/dining area.

4. We STILL have NO IDEA what we’d each be getting paid. I’m expecting my bf to get paid more since he was actually the one who was recommended to her, he has more experience, and he’s more than likely going to have more responsibility but I need to make enough to feed myself and my cats and pay for my car, etc. 

5. It’s in the desert which is infamous for sand storms and tumbleweeds and I’m not looking forward to dealing with the wear and tear that causes on my car.

6. It’s on the completely opposite side of the country from my family. My mom, my friends, my support. If something goes wrong, I’m all by myself. I’m stuck with my bf and my cats about 3000 miles away from the one person who would help me. Mom said she’d help me get back if I wanted to come back but what if something happens with my car and I don’t have a car anymore. How would I get back with my cats?

7. I haven’t worked in years because of my mental health problems and I’m worried I won’t be as ready as I’m thinking. I want to work for sure but I’m worried that I’d be rushing it. I mean I just now started seeing a psychologist again. I’m not on meds yet because it takes 6-8 weeks to get in with a psychiatrist. In the meantime I’m going to see if a regular physician can’t help me with some meds but we won’t really have a lot of time to tweak anything if need be. I was also recently officially diagnosed with PTSD and have already been dealing with bipolar disorder and anxiety for years. So there’s a lot of mental stuff I just started trying to work out and I might have to make this huge move right when I decide to fix myself.

8. It’s CA. Things are famously expensive there. I’m wondering how much more food and everyday necessities like that are going to be. MD is pretty darn expensive too so I’m not too worried about that.

I never take risks and I feel like I should because I’m never going to get anywhere if I don’t but I’m so fucking terrified to do anything and be wrong. I’m scared to get stuck somewhere worse than where I currently am. I’m worried I might have a big mental breakdown worse than any other ones I’ve had before and that I might actually get hospitalized for it this time. I’m worried about being put in a place where I feel stuck with no way out but suicide. I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever actually be able to kill myself but I feel like this decision if it doesn’t work out has the potential to put me in that place. It’s a tricky situation though because sitting here doing nothing and trying to figure it out is making me want to die too. I cry a lot. Sometimes seemingly for no reason. I wish I would die very often. So I wouldn’t be a burden to anyone anymore and so I could stop hurting and thinking and feeling so much all the time. I hate talking about this to anyone because everyone says the same things. I need some unique, critiqued, tailored advice specifically for me and my situation. 

There are some pros I can think of that I want to list:

1. Getting this job to officially stick in the resume for future opportunities would be awesome. Bf could work this job for a while then get a better job somewhere more ideal, or even move back here and get a job at one of the grow houses or dispensaries in MD. I probably could too if I wanted to pursue that career.

2. Being somewhere where no one knows me would provide me with a fresh start. I could be whoever I want to be (even though I kind of already do that).

3. I’d finally be escaping the humidity that kills my lungs in the summer on the east coast. My health would probably improve.

4. NO SNOW! And if I start to miss it and want to see it I could drive to Big Bear or one of the other snow capped mountains.

5. Relatively warm-hot year round.

6. Close to Long Beach so I could go see all the Sublime things!

7. It would be a good first move. We’d have a place to stay for free so we wouldn’t have to worry about rent which is the number one things I worry about everywhere else we’ve thought about moving to. It would hopefully give me the confidence boost I need to get out on my own and really be an adult for the first time.

8. 3 words. Authentic. Mexican. Food. (can’t believe I didn’t think of that until number 8)

So basically I just don’t know what to do. There’s good and bad things about the move. The bad things kind of scare me more than the good things entice me. If it were just in a different area of CA. If only it were NorCal and not SoCal. If anyone from an area around Victorville/Baldy Mesa, CA sees this by some miracle, please leave any advice you might have. I’m from southern MD and aside from working in DC there’s not much opportunity here. Otherwise you have to know somebody or spend a lot of time and money in college to get a good job. Even people I know who did spend 4+ years in college get out and can’t find a job. And I mean can’t find a job period, not just in their field. So because of that and the weather (I have asthma and I can’t breath in the summer sometimes because the humidity is so bad.. dry heat is way better for me than humidity) I want to move out of MD and away from the east coast. Plus the people have gotten noticeably ruder here as I’ve been growing up. It’s definitely noticeable. And no one can drive. MD is one of the worst driving states.
