This Unrestored 1929 Ford Model A Roadster is a Blast from Hot Rodding’s Past
For a lot of guys, old hot rods are the stuff dreams are made of, but then reality sets in. Supply-and-demand relegates most dreams to the scrap pile of the mind. Yet as time marches on, more of these cars see the first light of day in many a moon as the former owners lose interest or leave the scene.
Alan Darr of Longview, Washington, had a few really nice old Fords himself. Some are restored back to stock, and several are hot rods. This ���29 roadster, however, was in his possession for more than 35 years and is one of those Holy Grail examples of dirt blasters from the past.
From any angle this roadster says hot rod. The louvered hood, big-and-littles, and tuck-and-roll upholstery say it all. The “arrest-me red” paint doesn’t hurt either.
The roadster was originally the dream of a guy in Stockton, California. His name, and the fun he had with it, have been lost in the fog of time. He may have built it as a hot street car and maybe an occasional circle-track contender. He apparently kept it for most of his life, finally selling it at retirement age in the early 1970s at a swap meet in Stockton.
The roadster then moved north to Castle Rock, Washington. A few years later, the second owner lost interest. Alan saw it advertised in a local paper and laid down $7,000 for it.
The way cool flatty is slid back under the cowl, most likely for weight transfer. Third owner Alan Darr had the radiator custom-made to cool the built V8 flathead because the original had pretty much left the building.
Though it was an unrestored hot rod from the 1950s, Alan didn’t baby it. For instance, in 2010, he and his wife drove the roadster from Washington to the Goodguys show in Pleasanton, California, a distance of 815 miles one way. They then received the Stroker McGurk award from Tom Medley himself.
The roadster remained part of Alan’s collection until he passed away in 2016. His best buddy, Steve Lemmons, was entrusted to find good homes for this roadster and Alan’s other hot rods.
Ronn Meyer of Modesto, California, saw the ad for this beautiful roadster during a daily scouring of the H.A.M.B. Ronn has always liked hot rods, as his dad took him to all the cool shows the Central Valley had to offer. Author Albert Drake’s books on hot rods are a solid part of his library to this day.
The cockpit of the ’29 has a full array of Stewart-Warner gauges in a ’40 Ford dash. A cut-down ’37 Ford banjo-style wheel is complemented by a Bantam rim.
This unrestored hot rod still looks fantastic. In person it appears to be a nearly fresh car, with very little noticeable wear on anything. The only repair made to the car was the addition of a new radiator, built by Mac’s Radiator in Portland, Oregon.
All these years later, we have gone full circle, building cars that emulate this very hot rod. Here is the way it went together: The backbone of the build is a set of ’32 Ford framerails with rear frame horns trimmed. The front axle is the proverbial Dago, a ’32 Ford I-beam that was dropped by Ed Stewart of San Diego, California. Would you believe the master cylinder and pedal assembly are from a ’48 Dodge? You can envision the builder walking through a junkyard and spying an almost-new Dodge, checking out the pedal assembly, and figuring out that it would work in his hot rod. Who would have thought? But it takes ingenuity to build a car, and the young car nuts at the time had a lot of it. They had to. The speed parts business was still in its infancy, with the aftermarket as we know it still years away.
A genuine Ford V8/60 piston tops the lever coming from the ’39 Ford three-speed transmission.
Moving on, a ’40 Ford donated its steering box, hydraulic brakes, and rear springs. The differential came from a ’37 Ford fixed up with a Halibrand Culver City quick-change.
Under the hood is the engine that powered hot rods for many moons until the overheads took the reins and ended the era. This one is a ’49-’53 Ford 8BA flathead with a displacement of 286 ci. The crank is a stout Mercury, and an Isky 400 cam pushes the lifters. Bolted to the block and supplying the juice is an Edelbrock three-carb manifold with a trio of Holley carbs. An original Filcoolator beehive oil filter, Mallory ignition, Fenton headers, and glasspacks round out the package. A ’39 Ford tranny sends the hot flatty motor’s power to the rearend.
What is really interesting is the placement of the engine—set way back in the frame, apparently to change the car’s balance by putting more weight to the rear. Speculation says that it was for racing of some kind, perhaps dirt track or at the dragstrip. Since the car is in such pristine condition, it could be assumed that it was never used for either venue.
The inside of the trunk looks like it just came from the trimmers. This old rod has been basically mothballed since the early 1950s.
The very straight ’29 Ford body was modified to fit the ’32 Ford rails, and includes a set-back firewall and filled cowl. Thus the fuel tank was relegated to the trunk area. A one-off aluminum hood was made for the car, and 64 louvers were punched in the side panels. It looks cool, and is cool for the hot flatty. The very traditional ’32 Ford grille shell is modified to blend in with the smaller size of the Model A body for the correct aesthetic. Add a set of Dietz headlights on a ’32 Ford headlight bar and a chopped windshield and you have perfection. Bright red lacquer was squirted on the super-straight body, but the painter is unknown.
Following through on the hot tickets of the period, the exceptional cockpit was loaded with all the righteous stuff. Start with a ’40 Ford dash, then add Stewart-Warner gauges and a cut-down ’37 Ford steering wheel with a Bantam rim. Check out the Ford V8/60 piston shift knob and fuzzy dice hanging from the ’36 Ford “string wound” rearview mirror. Add the Vanilla Cream Naugahyde tuck-and-roll upholstery with red carpet and you have perfection.
Getting a ’32 grille shell to coordinate with an early Model A body is no easy feat. This car’s original builder had an aluminum hood made and punched it full of louvers to help keep the flathead cool.
This is a very well preserved hot rod from an era when a kid could comb the junkyards and find the pieces he needed to bolt together a really nice ride. These cars were the hot rod heartbeat of the streets of America and are still raising the pulse of many of those guys that were there … and many more that have followed in their footsteps.
Dietz headlights mount on a ’32 bar, and the housings are painted with the same red lacquer as the body. The Dago ’32 dropped axle is hung with Model A springs.
All the right stuff is there: pinstriping, early California license plate, Pontiac taillights, twice pipes, and the club plaque. Most importantly, there’s a Culver City quick-change tucked under the deck.

Frando Clutch Slaves now in 2 sizes
Frando now offer Clutch Slave Cylinders in two different lengths, so motorcycles with short and long clutch activation arms can be converted from cable-operated to hydraulic systems.
Converting a clutch from cable to hydraulic operation gives a lighter, smoother and maintenance-free operation. Fitting is relatively straightforward, with three main components;
Replacement clutch lever and master cylinder
Slave cylinder, which attaches to the clutch housing.
Hydraulic hose, which replaces the cable and connects the master cylinder to the slave.
When the clutch lever is pulled in, the hydraulic system pushes fluid down the hose to the slave cylinder at the opposite end, which then moves the arm that operates the clutch.
The Frando slave cylinder is compact – the main body measures just 24 x 55 mm – with a piston diameter of 12.7 mm and a 10 mm stroke. The piston stem on the short version is adjustable from 35-42 mm and from 56 – 63 mm on the long model, so they can be extended or shortened to sit perfectly on the clutch arm.
Modular in design, the Slave Cylinder attaches to a hydraulic hose via a standard m10 x 1.00 banjo bolt, with built-in bleed nipple for easy air removal, and can be used in conjunction with Frando’s 15 mm Clutch Master Cylinder or paired to other compatible systems.

Leonard Lord represented BMC and Donald Healey his firm. - BMC merged with Jaguar Cars in 1966 to form British Motor Holdings (BMH). - Donald Healey left BMH in 1968 when it merged into British Leyland. - Healey then joined Jensen Motors, which had been making bodies for the "big Healeys" since their inception in 1952, and became their chairman in 1972. - Austin-Healey cars were produced until 1972 when the 20-year agreement between Healey and Austin came to an end. - The Austin-Healey Sprite was designed by Donald Healey as a low-cost Sports Car and production began at MG's Abingdon factory in March of 1958. Later models were also assembled in Enfield, New South Wales and in Australia. - A few months later, the new car was officially introduced in Monte Carlo, just prior to the Monte Carlo Rally. - In the UK it's called "Frogeye", in the US "Bugeye" and in Germany "Froschauge". - The headlights mounted on the top of hood were "lifted" because of U.S. Import legislations. - Concealed flip-up headlamps were in the original drawings but high production costs canceled those plans. - To build this little 2-door Roadster they used Austin, MG and Morris parts to keep the costs down. - The two front chassis legs projecting forward from the passenger compartment mean the shell is not a full monocoque. The front sheet-metal assembly, including the bonnet (hood) and wings, was a one-piece unit, hinged from the back, that swung up to allow access to the engine compartment. - The engine for example was also used in the Austin A35 and Morris Minor 1000 Series and the rack and pinion steering was derived from the Morris Minor 1000 Series and the front suspension from the Austin A35. - It has no exterior door handles and no exterior boot lid (the back seats would need to be folded down to get access, incl. the spare tire). - The entire front hood hinged upwards, allowing easy and convenient access to the engine. - It was made at the MG works in Abingdon and sold for £669, so the intention of keeping the price low worked. - By the quarter-elliptic rear springs, a simple self-supporting body and little weight, the Sprite is a rigid car to drive: But real fun to drive ☺☺! - They are still very popular for club racing. http://ift.tt/2gXEjQA
