Here it is ladies! A list of female biographies! Highly anticipated by nobody but myself! This took a long time, so I hope it might be enjoyable to at least some people. I'll add to this whenever I feel like it. A few things before I begin:

1. The list is (roughly) organized alphabetically by the subjects last name.

2. The subjects occupation (if they had one) will be labeled with a corresponding symbol (i.e. painter = 🎨, writer =✏️, and so on and so forth). Books about same sex attracted women (lesbian or bi women) and women of color are labeled. Occupations that cannot be easily represented by symbols will simply be stated.

Synopsis ~ When a newspaper runs a scandalous story about debutante Connie Allenbury, her powerful broker father threatens the newspaper's editor, Warren Haggerty, with a massive lawsuit. Faced with a libel suit from the socialite Allenbury, Haggerty cooks up a plan to beat her at her own game. To do this, he must rely upon the romantic chicanery of ex-employee Bill Stevens Chandler, with Haggerty's fiancée Gladys Benton (Lucille Ball) caught in the middle. Warren believes that, if he can prove Connie truly is a home-wrecker, as the article claims, he can file a countersuit against her. Warren then enlists his own fiancée, Gladys and reporter Bill Chandler to take part in a complex plan to turn the tables on the Allenburys.

PRINCIPAL CAST

Lucille Ball (Gladys Benton) is appearing in her 63rd film since coming to Hollywood in 1933.  Lucy plays the role originated by her friend Jean Harlowe in the 1936 version Libeled Lady. 

Van Johnson (Bill Stevens Chandler) co-starred in Too Many Girls (1940), the film that introduced Lucille Ball to Desi Arnaz. He was also seen with Lucy in the film Yours, Mine and Ours (1968).  He played himself on one of the most popular episodes of “I Love Lucy,” “The Dancing Star” (ILL S4;E27) and 1968′s “Guess Who Owes Lucy $23.50?” (HL S1;E11). He died in 2008 at age 92. 

Esther Williams (Connie Allenbury) also appeared with Lucille Ball in Ziegfeld Follies (1945).  

Keenan Wynn (Warren Haggerty) also appeared with Lucy and Williams in Ziegfeld Follies (1945) and with Ball in Without Love (1945) and The Long, Long Trailer (1953). 

Ben Blue (Spike Dolan) previously appeared with Lucille Ball in Thousands Cheer (1943). Like Lucy, he had a cameo role in the 1967 film A Guide for the Married Man.  They also acted together in “Jack Benny’s Carnival Nights” on March 20, 1968.

Cecil Kellaway (J.B. Allenbury) had previously appeared with Ball in Annabel Takes A Tour (1938). 

Ethel Smith (Herself) was an organist playing herself.

Carlos Ramirez (Himself) was a Columbian-born singer appearing as himself. 

June Lockhart (Babs Norvell) became one of TV’s most famous moms on “Lassie” and “Lost in Space”.  

Paul Harvey (Farwood) did six other films with Lucille Ball: The Affairs of Cellini (1934), Kid Millions (1934), Broadway Bill (1934), The Whole Town’s Talking (1935), I’ll Love You Always (1935), and The Marines Fly High (1940).  Fans probably remember him best as the art critic who visits the Ricardo apartment to assess Lucy’s talent in “Lucy the Sculptress” (ILL S2;E15).

James Flavin (Joe) previously appeared with Lucille in The Affairs of Cellini (1934), Without Love (1945), as the Pizzeria Owner in “The Visitor from Italy” (ILL S6;E5), and in 1963 Critic’s Choice and two episodes of “The Lucy Show.”

Celia Travers (Farwood's Secretary) had also appeared with Lucille Ball in Meet the People (1944). 

Grant Mitchell (Homer Henshaw) makes his only screen appearance with Lucille Ball.

Sybil Merritt (Receptionist) makes her only appearance with Lucille Ball.

‘EASY’ TRIVIA

A remake of one of the great comedies of the 1930s, Libeled Lady,  with Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy.

Van Johnson worked with Lucille Ball again several more times. He guest-starred as himself on "I Love Lucy" and he co-starred with her in the 1968 film Yours, Mine and Ours.

Van Johnson's biography, MGM's Golden Boy, states that Lucille Ball's performance as Gladys "reveals the embryo of her Lucy Ricardo role in the later ‘I Love Lucy’ television series."

Chandler's overdue hotel bill of $763.40 would equate to nearly $10,380 in 2021. The film was a big hit at the box office, earning MGM a profit of $1,779,000 according to studio records.

The duck hunting sequence with Johnson was written and directed by Buster Keaton and Edward Sedgwick, both of who proved close personal friends with Lucille Ball. 

Radio’s “Screen Guild Theater” broadcast a 30-minute adaptation of the movie in February 1948 with Van Johnson and Esther Williams reprising their film roles. Two years later, "Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a 60-minute radio adaptation of the movie with Van Johnson reprising his film role.

Lucille Ball borrows one of Samuel Goldwyn's malapropisms when she says, "Include me out!" Keenan Wynn tries to convince her of having a sham wedding with Van Johnson.

This film was first telecast in Los Angeles on September 26, 1957; in Philadelphia on October 25, 1957' in New York City January 23, 1958; and in San Francisco on Saturday January 25, 1958. At this time, color broadcasting was in its infancy, limited to only a small number of high rated programs, primarily on NBC and NBC affiliated stations, so these film showings were all still in B&W. Viewers were not offered the opportunity to see these films in their original Technicolor until several years later.

Early in this film, on the lower left of the screen, Fidel Castro (without the beard) is seen as a poolside spectator with a drink in front of him. Young Fidel did extra work for MGM, while a student at UCLA, before becoming fully active in politics. It’s interesting that Castro and Lucille should be in the same film, seeing that her husband was born in Cuba and driven out by revolutionaries.

Este manga cuyo guión es de Kaoru Ochiai y está dibujado por la gran Yumiko Igarashi, nos cuenta la historia de Josefina, emperatriz de Francia y primera esposa de Napoleón Bonaparte.

Narrada desde el punto de vista del sirviente de Josefina, la obra da un repaso a la historia, pasando por las distintas etapas de la vida de la emperatriz. Desde su infancia en Martinica, su matrimonio con Alejandro de Beauharnais, su encuentro con Napoleón, su coronamiento...

Me lo he pasado genial leyendo Josefina. No conocía la vida de esta mujer, pero ha conseguido que me interese realmente por el personaje y su vida. Y es que la historia está narrada de una manera que te atrapa, con sus dosis de drama y también sus toques de humor, creando un equilibrio perfecto para que la lectura sea fluida y amena.

Al final de los 2 primeros tomos hay viñetas donde Igarashi nos cuenta anécdotas, como su viaje a Francia donde presentó el manga de Josefina o en la que nos cuenta la que liaban sus 11 gatos en el estudio mientras dibujaba la obra... (Me ha parecido muy graciosa. 😂♥️) Y en el tercero una preciosa galería de imágenes.

Quiero destacar también la edición. Me ha parecido preciosa y el tomo es muy blandito y flexible, está cosido y se puede abrir totalmente sin miedo a que se rompa. 😯 ¡Me ha resultado comodísimo de leer!.

Desde aquí aprovecho para agradecer enormemente a Arechi por apostar por el Shôjo clásico y por esta obra en concreto, ya que nunca he sido muy fan de estudiar historia, y gracias a la lectura de este manga he disfrutado tanto que me ha despertado un interés por aprender más sobre aquella época y sus personajes.

Streamingtips för höstmörkret

Höstmörker är synonymt med film och tv, och denna höst är extra mörk. Vad passar då bättre än ett gäng nya filmer och tv-serier att kasta sig in i? Har därför listat några av de mest aktuella filmerna och tv-serierna som finns att streama just nu. 

 TV-SERIER

The Queen’s Gambit

Höstens mest hyllade serie handlar om schack. Bara en sån sak. Berättelsen kretsar kring föräldralösa Beth Harmon, som tidigt flyr verkligheten in i schackspelets fyrkantiga värld. Vad som börjar med ett parti i källaren med barnhemmets surmulna vaktmästare Mr Shaibel, utvecklas snart till en lika oväntad som framgångsrik karriär – kantad av både missbruk och kärleksbekymmer. Huvudkaraktären delar många likheter med verklighetens Bobby Fischer, en av tidernas främsta och mest mytomspunna schackspelare, tillika något slags förkroppsligande av den tunna gränsen mellan genialitet och galenskap. Att låta en ung kvinna vältra sig fram genom denna oerhört mansdominerade värld är såklart ett vinnande drag. Lika självklart är det stora genombrottet för Anya Taylor-Joy; hon beväpnar Beth med lika delar intelligens, styrka och sårbarhet. En fantastisk gestaltning av ett fascinerande livsöde.  

»The Queen’s Gambit« är en allmängiltig berättelse; en uppväxtskildring, en kärleks- och underdog-historia – en nostalgisk hyllning till en svunnen era och en bortglömd sport. Scenografi, rekvisita, små välfunna detaljer – att skapa så mycket energi och atmosfär ur en sådan notoriskt stram värld är ett toppbetyg till hela produktionen. För mig, som närmast schackberoende (och som i 85% av fallen spelar Queen’s Gambit som vit), är serien såklart en enda stor njutning. Stormästaren Kasparov har anlitats som konsult för att säkerställa att schackpartierna och karaktärernas jargong håller måttet, vilket gör scenerna ännu mer kraftfulla. Inte minst vill jag fortsätta träna på Najdorf-variationen i Sicilian Defense och förbättra min slutspelsteknik.  

Jag tänker också på Bobby Fischers berömda artikel där han dömer ut den aggressiva öppningen King’s Gambit som direkt undermålig: »The refutation of any gambit begins with accepting it. In my opinion the King's Gambit is busted. It loses by force«. Öppningens kvinnliga motsvarighet har visat sig vara betydligt mer motståndskraftig mot tidens tand  – detsamma kommer gälla tv-serien.

Kärlek & Anarki

Lisa Langseths Netflixsatsning är någon slags satir på förlagsvärlden. Premissen är ganska löjlig: Tvåbarnsmamman Sofie arbetar som konsult på ett bokförlag där hon inleder en slags pubertal utmaningslek med företagets nya, unga IT-tekniker Max. Att påstå att trovärdigheten haltar är en underdrift, och två avsnitt in var jag skeptisk, men när man väl har förlikat sig med det fåniga anslaget är det en underhållande resa, som dessutom växer sig starkare längs med vägen. Bäst? Björn Kellmans mjäkiga chef och det oväntat lekfulla sjunde avsnittet. Skräckfilm nästa för Langseth?

Industry

Serien följer ett gäng nyexaminerade tjugonåntings med vitt olika bakgrunder som landar praktikplats på en ansedd investmentbank i London, där de konkurrerar om ett begränsat antal fasta anställningar. Lena Dunham är exekutiv producent och regisserar det första avsnittet av denna tveklöst indragande, om än något klichéartade, »eat or be eaten«-skildring av finansvärlden. Sex, droger, svinaktiga chefer – och ett pulserande score av Berlinbaserade EDM-producenten Nathan Micay som är något alldeles extra. Endast tre av åtta avsnitt har släppts än så länge.

Top Dog

Svensk storsatsning som bygger på Jens Lapidus romantrilogi. Likt »Snabba cash« skildras mötet mellan den undre och den övre världen. Josefin Asplund spelar affärsjuristen som sätts på uppgiften att spåra den mystiskt försvunna arvtagaren till bolaget, och finner sig snart indragen i en smutsig Södertälje-härva tillsammans med den villkorligt frigivna Teddy. Serien är, likt många andra svenska kriminalare, väldigt tung på intrig. Sidospåren är många och plot-twistarna likaså. Något mer krut på karaktärsskildringar och atmosfär hade gjort serien gott. Men det är en välgjord produktion, även om man har sett det mesta förut. Asplund imponerar i huvudrollen, men bäst är Alexej Manvelov i rollen som den melankoliske gangstern Teddy.

The Undoing

HBO:s nya prestigedrama är en miniserie i sex delar. I huvudrollerna syns Nicole Kidman och Hugh Grant som spelar det framgångsrika paret Grace och Jonathan Fraser. Hon är parterapeut, han är en berömd barnläkare – sonen Henry spelar fiol och går på en exklusiv privatskola. Tillsammans bor de i en lyxvåning på Manhattan. Allt är frid och fröjd tills Elena, den unga gåtfulla mamman till en av elitskoleeleverna, hittas brutalt mördad, samtidigt som Jonathan spårlöst försvinner. 

Serien är skapad av David E. Kelley (»Big Little Lies«) och samtliga avsnitt är regisserad av danska Susanne Bier. Miniserien har (kanske lite för) enkelt beskrivits som en östkust-variant av just HBO-succén »Big Little Lies«. »The Undoing« riktar dock större fokus på sina centrala karaktärer och det centrala mysteriet, på gott och ont. Det är välspelat, välgjort och spännande – men saknar (än så länge) den där sista glöden.

FILMER

Orca

Josephine Bornebuschs långfilmsdebut om social distansering är såklart brinnande aktuell. Manuset skrevs på tre veckor i våras, efter att ett annat av Bornebuschs projekt blivit uppskjutet, och följer hur den priviligierade medelklassen brottas med tillvaron och sina relationer »i dessa tider« (även om någon pandemi aldrig uttryckligen nämns). Allt bakom skärmar såklart. Johan Rheborg spelar den kämpande författaren Claes som dagligen högläser sina pompösa texter för sin åldrande, sängliggande mor. Tova Magnusson är agenten som tänjer på etiska gränser i närmandet mot en ung skådespelare. Vera Vetali tar rollen som gravid influencer, syster till Bornebuschs stressade tvåbarnsmamma som tillfälligt flyr undan sin familj (Jerka Johansson spelar partnern) när de behöver henne som mest. Samtidigt försöker systrarnas pappa (Peter Andersson) knyta kontakt efter 28 års frånvaro. 

Med det stora persongalleriet försöker Bornebusch skina ljus på pandemins mångsidiga effekter på oss människor och våra relationer. Vissa kommer varandra närmare, andra glider isär. Vissa plågas, andra försöker dra fördel av situationen. Ibland är tonskiftena väl abrupta, men överlag fungerar det väl. Även dialogen är förvånansvärt rapp och välskriven givet den snabba produktionen. Samtidigt är filmen nästan provocerande trångsynt. Trots en gedigen ensemble påverkas inga karaktärer direkt av situationen, åtminstone varken fysiskt eller ekonomiskt. Karaktärerna har kreativa yrken där hemarbete fungerar smärtfritt, och någon jämrar sig över streamingtjänsternas skrala utbud. Å andra sidan bjuder verkligheten på tillräckligt med elände som det är för tillfället.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

Jag har spenderat de senaste två veckorna med att plöja mig igenom Aaron Sorkins mästerliga »The Newsroom«, och känner redan en styng av saknad. Som bekant finns det ingen manusförfattare i världen som kan skriva dialog som honom. »The Trial of the Chicago 7« är hans andra film (efter sevärda debuten »Molly’s Game«) som skrivande regissör och handlar om de sju amerikanska demonstranter som 1968 åtalades för konspiration, anstiftande till upplopp och andra brott i samband med det demokratiska partiets konvent i Chicago i Illinois samma år. En intressant, välspelad och Sorkinskt pratig historielektion, där humorn stundtals faller platt.

On the Rocks

Sofia Coppola och existentiell tomhet är en ryktbar duo. Mest framträdande i  mästerverket »Lost in Translation« (2003) och underskattade pärlan »Somewhere« (2010). Hennes senaste film är inte lika minnesvärd men likväl ett habilt tillskott i Coppolas filmografi. Och Bill Murray visar att han har mer kvar att ge.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Den efterlängtade (?) uppföljaren är inte mycket till film egentligen. Den universala humorn från originalet har ersatts med en mycket tydlig politisk agenda inför det, nu avgjorda, amerikanska valet. I det avseendet är det nittio underhållande minuter. Filmen är mest uppmärksammad för att ha lurat Trumps personliga advokat Rudy Giuliani till en intim träff med en ung kvinna i filmen.

Onward

Pixar är bäst i världen på varma, detalj- och snillrika filmer för hela familjen. Ironiskt nog går magin förlorad i deras första film som uttryckligen handlar om magi. Filmens emotionella kärna, broderskapet, är inte tillräckligt underbyggt, och det stora äventyret lovar mer än vad det levererar. Tyvärr en av Pixars svagare filmer.

David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet

»This is my testimony«, proklamerar 94-årige David Attenborough förtroligt till tittaren i dokumentärens öppning. Det är omöjligt att inte trollbindas av Attenboroughs röst. Det kvittar egentligen vad han pratar om. När han i 80 minuter sammanfattar sina hisnande livsupplevelser från jordens alla kontinenter är det således bara att kapitulera. Han är en av få människor som har upplevt allt det där de flesta bara läser om; skövlingen av regnskogen, polarisarnas avsmältning, mängder av olika djurarters utrotning  – om människans samlade avtryck på planeten. Hoppfullt nog föreslår Attenborough också en lösning.

Ah! I see, sorry!  I can’t say that’s something I’ve really thought about, especially by the time you get to da:i, where the brunt of my interest lies.  By that point they were at least getting used to the idea of "people look different and also do not have yaoi hands.”

Seriously what the fuck was with everybody’s hands in Origins.

Lemme see what I can rattle out here.

Blackwall:  A little torn.  On the one hand I just wanna toss my hands up and yell “BARA” and be done with it.  But given the way he’s been living since taking up the Blackwall name, I reckon he’s probably a little more on the rangey side these days.  He’s still got the frame that says he was a big guy, though.  A bit Jeffrey Dean Morgan after he lost all that weight a few years back.  Not terribly tall, though.  About average, 5′8″ ish.

Cassandra: Not sure why, but I feel like she’s long.  Near-to if not over 6′.  Figure otherwise is about as depicted in game, though it doesn’t do justice to the frankly terrifying muscle tone on this woman.  Fucking shredded.

Cole: 5′11″ish.  Ruler-straight from shoulder to heel.  All but disappears sideways - even when he’s not trying to.  Eventually does round out a bit if you encourage him to be more human.  

Dorian: 5′10″ and surprisingly muscular given he’s a mage.  I feel Tevinter might have a few more martial disciplines they pair with their magic than is common in Ferelden and the Marches (save of course for the knight-enchanter sorts).  Absolutely has a bubble butt.  Absolutely is proud of it.

Iron Bull:  There is literally nothing I can add to that character model.  Except maybe that arm canon that was in concept art.  That woulda been cool.  But yeah no, his design is too unique for me to really squiggle around.  And like, yeah.  Well over 7′.  Has to be.

Sera: She’s another one with a surprisingly unique character model.  Much curvier and more in line with human proportions than the elves we’ve seen to date.  I’m pretty ok with that, as it at least gives us the option of imagining that not every elf in this universe is a toothpick with googly eyes. 5′5″-ish or thereabouts.

Solas: I can’t help but think about golden thigh cladding.  What even was that armor?  Someone worked out how to spin gold into spandex, I guess.  Anyway.  Tall for an elf.  About on par with Dorian or Cole.  Wiry as hell.

Varric: The Littlest Bara.  On the upper end of Dwarven height.  4′10″ maybe.  I won’t contest the gunshow DA:I decided on (I’m not a monster), but I will contest the abs.  I will absoLUTELY contest the abs.  There’s just no way.

Vivienne: Only about 5′8″ or so.  But then you add heels and a hat and the posture, and well, it adds up.  Fit but very much not muscular.

Bonus Advisor round!

Cullen: Ah.  The noodle.  A bit over 6′, maybe 6′2″ tops.  Probably a wee bit bulkier than the game’s basic model.  Also, probably going a bit ropey during his time in the Inquisition.  There is no way that man is eating that well with an army to run on top of the recovering lyrium addiction.

Josephine: A little bit soft.  Just a bit.  She’s rushed off her feet almost constantly due to her position, so the occasional indulgence of Orlesian petit fours doesn’t leave her needing to get her clothes re-tailored. 5′5″ish.

Leliana: 5′7″.  The wiriest of the wiry.  She doesn’t look anywhere near as strong as she is, and it’s a little terrifying.  Behold the dex-based min/maxer.
