[Alright! I finished the Bardock DLC and I’ll put in some final thoughts--]
[I liked it a whole lot. They did a really good job with it in both staying true to the OG TV special while adding a few tidbits here and there like an ACTUAL final fight with Frieza that was REALLY cool with the BIG attacks and throwing in the visions here and there in the middle of the fight. They stayed true to Bardock, his team, and the overall themes of his story. At least originally before Super has come in and...well, you know what they’ve done.
While I wasn’t like super surprised to not see Gine, I was a little, considering they didn’t shy away from shoehorning in ideas and retcons introduced in Super/post DBZ into the main game on several occasions. It would have been kind of nice to see her, replace the final side mission with Melone with her or something, but of course not. They probably would have made it stupid anyway, considering out dirty they do their female characters constantly, so maybe it’s for the best. I am also very glad they didn’t bring in the Beerus bs or allude to him at all. Fucking HATE that narrative from Super as you all know.
Definitely got me all up in my feels (which was expected especially since Aunt Flo is visiting) so they did pretty good with that. AND ALSO. Technically, I’m NOT done. You get to play as Baby Geets! :D Which I will do tomorrow and will likely talk about then.
But yeah. The main story of this DLC was really neato and enjoyable. A few hiccups because why wouldn’t there be (looking at that bs with Fasha, esp), but overall? Fun stuff and decently challenging. Ish.]

Hub’s Kitchen Episode 5: Dragon Ball FigherZ Review: The Game Dragon Ball Fans Need
Hey guys, Hub here again, and welcome to Episode 5 of Hub’s Kitchen. Today, I’m gonna be reviewing Dragon Ball FighterZ for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Steam. I apologize for not being active for a good while. Blame college and my okay-ish midterm grades and me getting them up for that. I’ve been wanting to talk about FighterZ for a while, and oddly enough, I didn’t think I was I gonna talk about Dragon Ball so soon on this blog. I’ll get to the point: I’m a casual Dragon Ball fan. I haven’t read the manga, but I have watched the original Dragon Ball anime as well as the Dragon Ball Z anime (well Kai anyway because fuck having to watch 291 episodes). Dragon Ball is not a masterpiece in story-telling, nobody’s gonna argue that it is. However, the fighting and character interactions make up for those shortcomings (except for GT. Fuck GT). That, and Dragon Ball Z Abridged. Watch that, it’s amazing. I have played a few DB games before, mainly the first and third Budokai games and the Legacy of Goku games on the GBA, but I haven’t played that many games from the franchise. Anyway, enough with the stalling, it’s time to review Dragon Ball FighterZ!Oh, and be prepared to see names and storylines that might not be familiar to you guys, since I’m not sure if my followers know anything ‘bout Dragon Ball.
STORY
Dragon Ball FighterZ takes place within the Dragon Ball Super timeline (aka, in between the Buu saga and Peaceful World arc from Z). When exactly? I don’t really know. I’ve seen conflicting reports from saying it takes place after the Universe 6 arc but before the Goku Black arc, other say it takes place before the Tournament of Power. I’m gonna say it takes place before the Goku Black arc, but I think FighterZ is non-canon anyway, much like the DBZ movies. Anyway, because of strange energy waves that are disrupting their power, the Z-Warriors lost all their power (or strength) and are now on the same level, and believe me, for some characters, that is a good thing ‘cause it won’t be another Goku show (That’s what GT is for). The Z-Warriors also see that a soul is trapped inside the main character of the arc (yes, I’ll get to this), and that by linking with that soul, it allows you to fight alongside the Z-Warriors. Elsewhere, there’s a new character: Android 21. All we know from the Super Warriors arc is that she resurrected some of the classic DBZ villains using the Namekian Dragon Balls, like Frieza and Cell, and plans on doing… things to them. I won’t go into spoiler territory because that’s just one of the three stories. Yes, you heard me right. FighterZ gives you three stories to play. The Super Warriors arc, which focuses on the heroes and Goku being the main character (I mean, he is Goku after all), the Villain arc, which focuses more on the villains and Frieza being the main character (man, Super really loves Frieza. Not that I mean, but still), and the Android arc, with Android 18 being the main character. Having three stories in a fighting game, a genre not known for story? Sounds awesome, right? It does… until you actually play the story mode.
Okay, so here’s the biggest problem with the story mode: There are three, fucking stories in this game, and all of them last roughly four hours long. Doesn’t sound bad yet? Well, throughout the story, you move your characters throughout different points on a map, with limit amount of movements. That never becomes a problem, so ignore that. The bad part starts with the clones. As you’re moving along map, you have to fight clones of the characters, and this gets old faaaaaaast. By the time I got to the Android saga, I was so fucking done fighting clones that I had to listen to different music, podcasts, and have something on in the background because I needed something to keep me going. That’s a huge shame because the cutscenes and the character interactions are great. Whenever you enter a fight with certain characters, you’ll get a cutscene to trigger. Let me just say: Anything, and I do mean anything with Cell is fucking gold. Go look up videos of Cell in this game. He’s fucking amazing. It’s just that having to play 3 stories, fight clones the entire time, and for roughly 12 hours too gets tedious and boring fast. It’s easily the weakest part of this game.
PRESENTATION
Dragon Ball FighterZ looks and sounds fantastic. The Unreal 4 engine was used brilliantly, and the game almost looks like it came straight from the anime. The game even lifts direct pages from the manga and anime, like the Father-Son Kamehameha and the Family Kamehameha, and they look beautiful. The characters animate well in cutscenes and on the battlefield, and many of their signature moves (take Krillin’s Destructo Disk or Kiensan for you weebs out there), look fantastic.
The soundtrack is also pretty good, if a little reliant on hard rock. Then again, I love hard rock, so I don’t mind. Sadly, because of this, the music can all blend together, and the character themes are often ignored. A lot of the character themes are great. My personal favorites being Goku, Yamcha, Hit, Gohan, and Vegeta.
The voice acting is solid too. FighterZ allows you to switch between Japanese and English, and as much as I love Masako Nozawa’s take on Goku, I’m more of a Sean Schemmel guy. Anyway, both voice casts do a great job. Got not much to say about that.
GAMEPLAY
If you’ve played Marvel Vs Capcom 2, then you’d understand how Dragon Ball FighterZ works. For the uninitiated, first off, get initiated, but more importantly, DBFZ is a 2D 3v3 style fighting game. What that means is that you have a team of 3 characters and you can tag them in and out of battle. You have your combos, tech, assists to help you in battle, super meter that allows for heavy-hitting attacks, all that good stuff. In an interesting twist, FighterZ is designed as a fighting game first, and a Dragon Ball game second. Most of the time, it’s the other way around. A lot of Dragon Ball games try to capture the feeling of the anime, even down to the gameplay. From what I’ve seen, the Tenkaichi, Raging Blast, and Xenoverse games tend to do this fairly well. While that’s well and fine, I tend to prefer a simple 2D fighter with Dragon Ball characters.
One thing that sets FighterZ apart from something like Street Fighter is that FighterZ decides to make things simpler for new players. The game has an auto-combo system. What that means is that you can press a button (let’s say square for example), and you can get a combo from that. While this is good for introducing players into the game, it’s gonna get their asses kicked if they try to spam auto-combos online. It’s recommended that you get into practicing the game’s mechanics, which the game’s first story in the story mode helps you come to grips with. Or you could try learning the mechanics in the practice mode.
The roster for FighterZ is pretty solid, but if you’re spoiled by the likes of the Budokai Tenkaichi games with their huge rosters, FighterZ might disappoint you. It has everyone important (Goku, Vegeta, both Teen and Adult Gohan, Frieza, etc) to characters from Super like Hit, Goku Black, and Beerus. The game is getting DLC, and the first two characters confirmed are Bardock (father of Goku) and Broly (one of the most popular DBZ movie villains, and is, to quote his abridged movie, is a “literal giant fucking baby”).
Like every fighting game these days, Dragon Ball FighterZ has an online mode. Sadly, this review will not be going over that because I have not played any of them yet ‘cause I don’t have a Playstation Plus subscription at the moment and need to renew it. From what I’ve heard, the online has had several problems, from games losing connection, to having a hard time finding matches, etc. Doesn’t help that the game has this stupid lobby system that you have to be online for. Sure, there’s an offline lobby, but it’s still kinda lame that the game has to have an online lobby to begin with. There recently was an update that I heard fixed some of the problems, as well as adding a Party Mode of sorts, but again, ‘cause I don’t have PS Plus, I can’t verify if that’s the case for me.
OVERALL
Dragon Ball FighterZ is definitely a welcome addition to both Dragon Ball and fighting games in general. While the story mode was a bust outside of great character cutscenes, and the game having some noticeable online problems, FighterZ excels in the most important area: the fighting. Fast-paced, frantic, and easy to play, you don’t need to be a Dragon Ball fan to enjoy this game. I highly recommend it.
And that’s it. Sorry for the lack of depth, but I wanted to try to be quick and to the point with this review, seeing as how it was my first game review. Anyway, on the next episode of Hub’s Kitchen, I’m gonna review my second movie on this blog, and one I’ve had requests for. That movie, is Coco. ‘Til next time guys. I’m Hub Pie, and thanks for reading!

So yeah I watched two films of 2019. One I liked and the other one... Let's start this shit. Dragon Ball Super Broly: Yes, this film takes place after ToP (Tournament of Power). This borrows a lot of Dragon Ball Minus comic. Good: *The backstory of Frezia and the Saiyans is told very nicely. It's pretty much the first act of the film. *The new characters like Lemo and Cheelai brings something new to the table. They're not mindless Frezia soldiers and Beeryblue is badass. This old blue lady talks a lot of shit to Frezia without fear. *The fighting is amazingly beautiful. Broly power-ups, Goku/Vegeta team up, and Gogeta. All epic shit and Gogeta and Broly shattering the dimension of reality. * Broly is fucking relatable and cool to like. The old Broly was a mindless drunk. This new Broly is mindless drunk Hulk, but there's a reason why Broly fighting. Broly standing up for Lemo and Cheelai says a lot for his character. *The ending opens up a lot of possibilities and the film is short in a good way. Bad: *The backstory retells the Saiyans and Frezia relationship. Akira Toriyama loves reckoning his story for his characters. This marks about four times Toriyama redid Frezia reasons on killing the Saiyans, Bardock personality, and the legend of SSJ/SSJ God. *We don't get enough info about the relationship between the Saiyans and Frieza. Also, I would like to see Broly training with his father. *Some CGI moments didn't look so clean. When the ice cap turned into a melted lava landscape at first glance. *You must be huge DB fan to understand what the hell is going on. Just like Avengers IW, DB Super Broly follows the same rules. Score: Full Price for DB fans and anime fans. However, I don't recommend this film for folks who just want to see an enjoyable film. You'll be lost and confused. Glass: this film bridge the gap between Unbreakable and Split. The two men paths cross. Mr. Glass is the only man to bring the Horde and The Overseer to the main stage. Good *James McAvoy is stupidly amazing. McAvoy playing ten different characters. This man acting is crazy as hell. * Samuel L Jackson at his best and damn it this film doesn't use him well. The line of dialogue Jackson gives out is epic. *Soft score playing in the background whenever the villain's plotting something big. Bad: *Everything! *The film's pacing is fucking awful. The first act is done well, but the rest is slowed down for some BS dialogue. *M. Night writing is a simple insult to comic book fans. The same people who made M. Night big is a comic book fans. *So much pandering to the viewers about why comic book characters don't exist. However, the film goes back on its own word to prove they are real. *Why is this film 2 hours long? Nothing happens once The Overseer and The Horde are captured. The film starts back up once Mr. Glass is free. *The twist in the film is so poor it makes the Signs, The Village, The Happening twists look perfect. The big reveal is so bad. *Bruce Willis was the weakest actor in the film. Score: Very low Some old Bullshit The film's false advertisement will leave you bored and disappointed. That's really bad because. James McAvoy and Samuel L. Jackson are amazing on screen. These two have a good amount of chemistry. I just wish was enjoyable to watch. [Finished the Planet Kanassa missions and oof. I got some mad feels and thoughts.]
[First I’ll go with just overall general thoughts. I really enjoyed it and liked the gameplay. They basically added mob fights to the game, which makes sense, so it keeps it from getting too repetitive. It looked gorgeous as the rest of the game has and I’m having fun overall with the DLC. The characters are fun and it’s neat to see their dynamics and how that’s maintained here and whatnot and just goooood shiiiit.
Now for some more specific feels. First, a small one. As far as this game goes and what I remember of the main story, they honestly somehow managed to make Bardock more brutal and callous than Vegeta. Like damn some of the shit he says is just cruel and had me muttering “fucking christ, bardock” more than a few times. And it’s like...you know he IS that way, and that’s how the special portrayed him, but I guess with the combination of seeing more of it through the gameplay and being bombarded more often these days with Super’s “softer” rendition of Bardock, it was insane. And maybe that’s also because we don’t get to see or play as Vegeta in this game in a situation like purging a planet for Freezie pop, but damn. They really are doing it wrong with Vegeta when Bardock makes him look almost saintly. In this game at least.
The other thing that I think might have been the best(?) part of this particular part of the DLC and its execution is just...that sinking gut feeling you have the entire time that comes with being in control of the ones slaughtering innocent people for an empire’s greed. Or maybe that’s just me because I RP a ton of characters tied to the Cold Empire. Either way, watching and listening to Bardock, Tora, Fasha, Borgos, and Shugesh discuss and interact with the Kanassans was like...poignant and almost hard to stomach. Juxtaposed with the characters’ excitement and enjoyment of it all it’s like this weird combination of wanting to share in the emotions of the character you’re controlling but 😬😬 on a base level you just can’t. Not completely, because you know YOU’RE the bad guy here. So yeah. I think they did an excellent job not only juxtaposing the Kanassans’ reactions to the Saiyans’ excitement, but also in getting it all to elicit that big oof feeling from the player, too.
Last small thing, more related to my bs than anything: Nabs was absolutely having a bad time watching that because it brought back all her trauma from being on the force. Even Bardock flinched a few times and that’s HIM. I’ve also been re-reading my fic so I’m in the early part and that’s full of Nabooru’s existential moral crises and then we get this SO. :’3]

[BABY BOI BABY. This scene was weird but...BABY.
Also Bardock, he absolutely is a spoiled brat and idk why they're trying to portray him as not that and like...less haughty than he was? More Vegeta watering down i guess.]

[Now I for real finished off the Bardock DLC and here are my few thoughts:]
[I guess I’m not SUPER surprised, but it was very short and basically just a replay of the scenes we get in the TV special. You fight some Saibamen, then Cui--who apparently started his beef with Vegeta when he was a kid lmao--and then go to the planet to purge before getting the news of Planet Vegeta’s destruction. They didn’t add any fun little extra side quests or dialogue really which sucks because ugh. This would have been a perfect opportunity to show what Vegeta’s life was like before the Frieza Force and whatnot but no. We can’t have nice things.
While I was a little afraid of the making baby Geets soft and watering him down, they did not do that and I was glad to see him be the absolute gremlin he should be. He was bossy, bratty, sassy, and callous af and I was about it. He was also fun to fight with.
But overall it was a fun if not too short little extension of a good DLC. Baby Geets is so smol and it’s adorable to watch him do his thing. And we also got some Nappa content which is always a plus.]

[GOD. Tora. You poor man having to put up with these guys. Fasha and Bardock are always challenging each other and he’s just like “SIGH we’re a TEAM guys!”
I love it. :’3 Bardock and Fasha being hyper competitive with each other is so great.]

[My Cramps from Hell and current big :D about the Bardock DLC pushed my mind to a few small 😒🙄 moment I had with it so far (which isn't far in and is absolutely my Feminist Rage coming out BUT). Spoilers ahead.
I was pretty disappointed that Fasha's side quest revolved around a romantic subplot. With the other members of the team, they fought with you for whatever reason, but for hers, it was Bardock confronting a guy that was simping over Fasha and fighting him to help him get stronger so he could talk to her. Then she of course has the whole inner monlogue about how sweet it was that he was willing to get his ass beat for her and that she might be interested now and blah blah blah. But she didn't fight and it just irks me because of course the women have to be part of some romantic bs and it's just so lame that, even with a SAIYAN woman, we're going to keep her within the box they're "comfortable" with putting them in. Plus like sorry but Fasha would absolutely deal with that kind of shit on her own ok. She don't need Bardock lmao.
I would have been more intrigued if the forced their dumb romance bs on ducking Shugesh or Borgos. 🤣🤣🤣 Instead, they got the SAIYANS ONLY CARE ABOUT FOOOOOOOD trope. Which is big yawn but not quite as egregious as how they did Fasha dirty.
Also. I say again. Bardock and Tora have that big Achilles and Patrclus energy and I will never change my mind.]

[This one under the cut because it’s more spoiler-y--]
[So there’s a side mission in this where it seems like Frieza or the force in general have been monitoring the Saiyans for a while, Bardock in particular apparently. I like that, because it gives some confirmation/makes better sense of why Frieza knew about Bardock and the Saiyans getting stronger in general (and maybe a few other things like King Vegeta and his plans at his attempted coup? That probs won’t come up here, but food for thought on how much Frieza knew). Bardock also becomes suspicious of the Frieza Force and whatnot, giving reason for him to suspect he’s up to something. Which is nice because it’s more organic than the psychic powers (which I’m guessing might still be coming but).
Or this was all just orchestrated by the Ginyu Force to try and get a new member because of the follow up missions, meaning the first part of that theory might be moot but EH.]

[OH. I forgot about one really adorable detail about the Baby Geets part of the DLC. So as you would expect, even little Geets has a pretty decent vocabulary and speaks like you would expect a haughty prince. But then at one point, the “child” in him comes out when he says something about blowing the enemies into “itty bitty pieces.”
I doubt the detail was purposeful, but it showed that he IS still a kid despite his station, work, etc. and it was really nice. And sad. But adorable]

[I don’t know why everyone was so shocked Bardock didn’t want to go see Kakarot. Like I’m glad they kept Bardock IC and had him be like “nah i got a fun fight to get to, bai” but idk. Seemed weird that the rest of his team and the doctors were all shocked he didn’t care to go. I know there’s the scene in the special where Fasha asks him about it and is like “wow you forgot already damn” so idk maybe I’m being too analytical and critical xD
Also, again. Tora is the real leader of this team. He’s calling the shots and telling everyone to not get in trouble/hurt/out of control/etc. Bardock is just the face. 🤣🤣]
