[MMMM it's small and stupid, but something in my brain gets lit aflame when I see people say Vegeta is a "feral cat" in terms of his relationship with Bulma. As in, he was a stray cat that Bulma GRACIOUSLY took in and housed because he wouldn't leave (even though I think even in canon his time there was pretty split with not being there after Namek but what do I know) and now he's her little baby pet that she gets to play dress up with and have as arm candy to her little events and for social media clout.

Like...I have a hundred issues with this from dehumanization (desaiyanization?) to the general implications of this narrative but I really just can't stand the narrative, especially when people try to play that off as a cute relationship. It's not. It's Frieza 2.0 for him because Bulma treats him just like Frieza did. There's a REASON Bulma and Frieza were paralleled in the Broly movie: they're alike. And they both dehumanize Vegeta, especially when people portray the narrative like this. They both disregard and strip him of any bit of Saiyanness or even just individuality he can possibly have left. But yeah. So damn cute.

This is literally the biggest reason I can't get behind this ship, especially in how it's shown in more recent material and how fans typically write it: it's toxic. On both sides, but it's become more toxic on Bulma's side. And in a relationship with an asshole like Vegeta? That's fucking saying something.]

Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:

In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.

A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.

In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.
