Tutorial with Josie

It's been a couple weeks, but I'd like to collate and reflect on some of the references Josie gave me in this tutorial. We spoke about the direction my work might take this year, and specifically about the distribution of the Dinner Machine text, which Josie suggested could live its life as a network of points of distribution, rather than as a finished book. I've already performed two extracts, for example, and these could maybe be collated onto a website and viewed connected nodes.

Leonora Carrington - The Debutante

Very short, surreal story of an aristocratic woman who trades place with a hyena. The woman and the hyena kill a maid, to remove her face to be used as a mask.

A bat entered through the window, emitting little cries. I am terribly afraid of bats, I hid behind a chair, my teeth chattering. Scarcely was I on my knees when the beating of the wings was drowned out by a great commotion at my door. My mother entered, pale with rage. “We were coming to seat ourselves at the table,” she said, “when the thing who was in your place rose and cried: ‘I smell a little strong, eh? Well, as for me, I do not eat cake.’ With these words she removed her face and ate it. A great leap and she disappeared out the window.”

Marianna Simmnett

I'd not heard of Simmnett before, and am very intrigued by the descriptions and stills of her film work. I know she has some work on as part of BAS9 at The Box right now, but I am very squeamish when it comes to medical procedures and don't think I could sit through one of the videos without fainting. This work in particular looks really cool to me. I love the phrase "chain-reactions of violence".

I was talking with one my colleagues invigilating the BAS9, and though it often takes a lot of work for a video/film in a gallery space to actually capture our attention, we both agreed they often end up our favourite works in exhibitions. I wonder why this is? Perhaps it's because the language of moving image is so omnipresent in our lives that it's a kind of internalised, subconscious thing that's a little more intuitive to navigate as a viewer? Videos can often help ground works for me. You get a set length of time to take in and digest things, that can then inform your experience with other works. Invigilating in the Levinsky gallery, I've now seen Maeve Brennan's film An Excavation many times, but it remains captivating to me, and continues to bring new ideas and contexts to the other works in the show.

Arcadia Missa

This was a recommendation for looking at how artist/writers distribute text works. Many of the books published by this gallery have been labelled as novellas.

We spoke a little about the process of seeking funding/editing from galleries, and the kinds of ways in which artists can publish. I wonder if this is the right avenue for Dinner Machine or not. In some ways I wonder if it'd suit a more general, fantasy fiction audience?

Today I’m going to talk about something really interesting. “More than 20 artists have withdrawn from British Art Show 9 in support of "political freedom, and artistic expression in cultural institutions and universities across the UK"

More than 20 artists, including Oscar Murillo, Helen Cammock and Heather Phillipson, have pledged to withdraw their works from the forthcoming British Art Show 9 (BAS9) due to be held in Manchester this spring following Alistair Hudson’s alleged forcing out from his post as the director of the Whitworth art gallery. The Manchester leg of the show is scheduled to open across four venues (HOME; Manchester Art Gallery; Castlefield Gallery; the Whitworth; 13 May-4 September).
