^doodles of the guy (and some other things) i was talking about his name is victor he goes by any pronouns, there's also @igamer12 's wizard in here (long hair and round glasses). more info about viccy under the cut i guess
also erm. i know dogshit about adventure time, which vic is an oc for but whatever <Cain's idea so complain to it /joking. coming back on track, she's a living suit of armor that's also a cowboy that's also a sand wizard. their hobbies include lying for fun which i think is quite nicely captured in half the drawings i did. it also goes by like fifty different names, but the, so to speak, official one is victor (it doesn't mind diminutives or how you spell it). really doesn't use magic that often, prefers the sword, which is named big iron. also has a skeleton horse called sugarcube but i haven't really drawn that
DISCLAIMER (please read):
- i am doing this for fun. this is not a serious post.
- this is not a criticism of gabriel's character design.
- gabriel is an angel. obviously angels function differently to humans. the armour of angels in ultrakill could be purely decorative for all i know, but im evaluating it in terms of protection in relation to human anatomy.
- i often specifically refer to protection against swords. this is because i am basing my knowledge off of medieval armour. (what im saying is: i know v1 uses guns im not stupid)
- im not an expert on armour. i read about it for fun, as a hobby. if i get something wrong, PLEASE tell me i love getting new information about armour and i do not want to unintentionally spread misinformation.
initially i did a quick assessment of the gaps in the armour, which would be weak points. while ive seen some interpretations of gabriel wearing a sort of bodysuit, he is definitely not wearing a gambeson. this would make the armour uncomfortable to wear as there would be no padding under it.
the rest of the armour evaluation is in the images below. all of the text is also written out in the image descriptions.
after all this nitpicking, i decided to try to redesign gabriel's armour to make it more protective while keeping it similar to his original design and still recognisable as gabriel ultrakill.
• lowered pauldrons so they're not floating
• added an aventail to the helmet to protect his neck
• the golden parts of the cuirass no longer go inwards
• didnt add couters because i suck at drawing them but lets pretend that i did that to stay closer to his original design (besides he still has the elbow pieces on his vambrace to provide some defence)
• his gauntlets have articulated fingers now
• tassets are laminated rather than the layers he originally had. in retrospect i should have done tassets of three lame and decorated them similarly to gabriels original design but oh well
• i also imagine that he would be wearing a hauberk under the skirt
• added extra plates to the poleyns as well as side fins
• he's got proper sabatons now
• also he would be wearing a gambeson under his armour
• helmet is more like a visored bascinet
• there are actual holes for ventilation now, and there's more of them.
• there are also holes for vision yay
• didn't want to get rid of the gold bit that goes around the helmet so i changed the shape so that weapons wouldn't get caught on it, but would instead skate off. i think it should come closer to the visor on the side profile though.
thank you for reading all of this i had a lot of fun doing this :-)
my reasons for each member + original image under the cut:
coups (great helm) - i feel like he would choose the most intimidating one and this one would just fit with his big sturdy body <3
jeonghan (barbute) - he needs to have his mouth relatively free so that he can use psychological warfare but this helmet would also go great with a huge jacket which is a must for him
joshua (sallet) - he's a wild card honestly... i can kinda see him owning multiple designer medieval helmets, but i feel like the sallet seems kinda fancy which suits him. i could also see him in the barbute to match jh tho
jun (armet) - the armet was made for jun i mean just look at the slayful profile and the head shape it would fit him like a glove
hoshi (armet) - i feel like the armet is the most tiger-like of all of the options here. hoshi would probably paint some stripes and whiskers on it or customize it in some other way
wonwoo (kettle hat) - this seems like the only glasses-friendly option and also he's a little bit of a loser (<3 <3) which fits the vibe of this option loll
woozi (sallet) - it's kinda reminiscent of his necessary helmet (see: bss comeback gose) so i think he could make some good music in it and the piece in the back would make him look like a little bug
minghao (frog-mouth) - duh but also i think he would appreciate the sculptural/avant-garde quality of this one
mingyu (hounskull) - mingyu wants the most protection possible so i was thinking absolute, full coverage, but it could also be a problem since he need to be able to look down more bc of his height..... idk
dk (spangenhelm) - the chainmail matches his arthur costume somewhat and he would also want to be in a helmet that doesn't trap his voice inside with him like a mini echo chamber
seungkwan (bascinet) - i feel like he might get scared if his whole head was covered up, and, as a bonus, there’s a possibility of modifying the helmet so that he could wear his navy baseball hat
vernon (hounskull) - the silhouette is reminiscent of the strawberry game from boomily outing, which suited him like no one else. also imagine a kenzo hounskull it would be so crazy cool
dino (great helm) - this is a purely instinctual choice. for some reason i just feel like this would suit him so well… like i can just see this helmet on his shoulders and it fits
YOU. What's your favorite helmet from the medieval period :3? (Houndskull Bascinet my beloved)
Hmmm...
My fav helmets tend to be from the modern era, not gonna lie.
I do love me a good turban helmet though, especially the fancy engraved and spiral-y ones.
dim what if helmets were made to make the shape of an animal like the one in dungeon meshi, would it be practical? What animal head do you think is the most practical for fighting/lancing :D

Helmets would often have animalistic elements either out of coincidence, or as part of its decorative design.
One example is this 15th century sallet, which would've almost definitely inspired the living armor helmet seen in dungeon meshi.
Other armor pieces, such as the visors of late 14th century bascinets, adopted a beak form to help deflect attacks (particularly arrows) from the front.
While helmets such as the lion sallet would've almost definitely been worse for protection than a 'normal' helmet, it would've been important to people to dress well for their potential death, as well as indicating to enemy soldiers their economic class (i.e to be potentially held for ransom).
