On this day in 1977, the Peter Gabriel single “Solsbury Hill” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #90 (April 30)

This is one of my favourite songs…

After leaving prog rock legends Genesis in mid-1975, (the band he started in the late 1960s with school friends Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford), Gabriel took music lessons, and went about writing songs for his first solo album.

When he finally released the album in 1977, “Solsbury Hill” became his debut solo single.

Gabriel has said of the song's meaning, "It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get ... It's about letting go”; so it has autobiographical elements of the big decision for him to leave Genesis and go solo.

The song with the unusual 7/4 time signature peaked at #13 in the UK and the Netherlands, #16 in Germany, #17 in Belgium, and #68 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

FYI - Solsbury Hill is a small flat-topped hill (and the site of an Iron Age hill fort), located above the village of Batheaston in Somerset, England.

This brilliantly made video of “Solsbury Hill” is a montage of Peter Gabriel’s performances of the song from 1978 to 2013.

St John the Baptist Church - Batheaston Haunting - A grey lady is said to haunt near the gates of this church, alleged to be the victim of a coach accident in the late 1700's when the coach overturned on its way to Bath from London. Regarding "These Summer Sons": I like Carter's description. I imagine him all up in his own head and I already want to be his friend. Question: What sort of setting does the story have and what made you choose it?

I’m so sorry this took me so long to answer! It got buried in amongst a bunch for a game and I missed it. I’m so glad you love Carter, he’s an underappreciated bean.

TSS is set in a small town in England called Belladonna, surrounded by woodland. I’m from the UK myself so something closer to home appealed to me and I really love stories of creepy magical goings on in the woods and magic with consequences especially. Belladonna is based loosely around aspects of the towns I’ve lived in combined together, expcept that the places I’ve lived are slightly less cursed. A lot of the local legends in Belladonna like the witch’s rock are directly from my home town of Batheaston.
