I give you, The Lion of Bavaria. This sleeping lion is carved directly into the rock on the mountain. When Greece gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire, Ioannis Kapodistrias was selected as the first head of state. He was assassinated in Nafplio and this resulted in anarchy throughout Greece. Prince Otto of Bavaria was later chosen to rule Greece and over 3,500 Bavarian soldiers arrived with him as royal guards. During a typhoid epidemic from 1833-34, many of these soldiers and the citizens in Nafplio died. This monument honors the memory of those Bavarian soldiers who died. This lion is absolutely huge. At least 10’ long. It’s amazing to see in person, and I hope I can share some of it’s wonder with you in photos. I never really know what to expect from a monument, I just go. I hope this weekend if something interests you, you just go and do it. Don’t think too much about the ifs or buts, just venture out there!
