Metro Manila ECQ August 2021 Edition: I normally walk through the mall on my way home from work. This was how it looked like this afternoon, around 4:20PM. The mall itself was open, but a lot of the shops chose to close down for the duration of this lockdown. Even the central atrium that was converted to a vaccination hub was closed. Only about a handful of food shops were open. The groceries were business as usual though. On one hand it looks dark and dreary. My favorite part in designing our curriculum is that I get to sneak in a bunch of obscure and irrelevant references for my student to both learn and eventually research about. This would ensure that my class is somewhat unpredictable and eventually making my work both fun and enjoyable in the process. It was in May 2020, when ABC-CBN, a Philippine TV network, lost its franchise amidst the pandemic. Many employees were laid off and the channel was removed in public air. Artists of the station rushed in to advocate the renewal of the station’s franchise and that includes Kim Chiu (Ralf Rivas, 2020).

During a Laban Kapamilya Livestream – Kim Chiu stated a nearly incoherent statement about complying with the pandemic guidelines about self-quarantine. This statement was mocked for its incoherence and Kim Chiu was dragged in as well (ACNX, 2020).

Kim Chiu flipped the table around by remixing the statement into a song that garnered 10 million views on YouTube as of May 2021. Kim Chiu used the mockery to into something productive. She sold merchandise with the hashtag #BawalLumabas and donated its proceeds of 1500 food packs and 300k PHP mass testing kits to the public (Hallare, 2020; Rappler. 2020).

Here we can see how art can be taken from everywhere. From mockery, Kim Chiu and DJ Squammy turned it into a song that inspired Filipinos to follow COVID-19 quarantine guidelines and a source of money for COVID-19 relief operations. Art can be used to help people (Rappler, 2020).
