Protip: When you're participating in your very first Inktober, don't be afraid to be predictable. Because what are the odds of the other artist doing the same artwork as yours. And besides, the key here is speed and ability to churn out artworks everyday/week and not groundbreaking concepts or mindblowing art theories. When you can do that on the fly then that's good too but if not then you'd be left eating dust. Although I haven't worked for any of the big 3 companies but the advice I'd give to my student is that they should draw D-list or relatively unknown superheroes/villains. Heroes you'd probably only hear/see when there is a big catclysmic event like Infinity War/Crisis On Infinite Earth. Like I dunno, Quasar or Moondragon... Those are the heroes/villains that should be in your portfolio. Because let's face it, there could be a thousand artist who are all good at drawing Superman, Spider-man,etc. But there could be only a handful of artist that could draw a decent Iron Fist or maybe Ghost Rider. So why crowd at the top when you could work your way smartly from the bottom? Also, given that every artist/writer would have a different start-off point, those so called D-list heroes might be someone's favorite or even someone's first exposure to the medium. Not only is it good for nostalgic purposes but you could eventually share a common love for that "other guy/gal" that are either dead or intentionally forgotten. Long story short, I ended up drawing Steve Ditko's Squirrel Girl. It's both a cute and funny character to draw. My students couldn't stop laughing when they heard names like "Big Bert" and "Little John". It's either they recognize those as penis sounding names or Voltes V is just a darn good show/topic that trancends age, race and generation. I always identified with Mark Gordon since he was the lone wolf /emo guy of the group. I bet he secretly listens to Linkin Park as well. And he also rides a horse. I always felt like him whenever I do get to ride a a horse in Baguio or at the very least a Kalesa. Anyway, our topic of the day dealt with anime shows that did have a cultural impact in the Philippines. I usually do get carried away and forget that I'm simply conducting a class for kids and teenagers. Although I do have aspirations to teach in college but since that includes several requirements (both having the need to both study yet again and spending hard-earned money on a fluctuating tuition fee). Just a short exercise on the various ways to draw your "own" fanart through either copying or by altering the pose. Copying is fine, it's tracing that is an absolute MORTAL SIN and an absolute no-no for every artist. And although OCs are favored over someone else's IP. You had to start somewhere. And more often than not, those "somewhere" are characters from shows and series you like. Also, notice how bits and pieces gets added or decreased with every redraw. My favorite part in designing our curriculum is that I get to sneak in a bunch of obscure and irrelevant references for my student to both learn and eventually research about. This would ensure that my class is somewhat unpredictable and eventually making my work both fun and enjoyable in the process. It's like imparting knowledge through the use of trivias and easter eggs.
