I mentioned not too long ago, that this is what happens when people buy a church or school to convert and don't have the means or expertise to do it professionally. It didn't turn out as they envisioned, so they give up and put it up for sale. This is a 1916 church in Beaverdam, Ohio. The description says it has 2bds, and 2ba, but that can definitely change with a new buyer. Priced at $235K.
Tumblr media
Entrance lobby with a wide opening and accordion doors.
Tumblr media
In the main space they've arranged a living room set in front of the altar pews and placed a board with an old altar cloth on it to make a TV stand.
Tumblr media
That's all there is in the vast main body of the church. The altar is still standing and judging by the original carpet, faded where the pews once were, it would be very costly to do new flooring of any kind. A couple of the original pews are along the side walls.
Tumblr media
There's low book shelving on the altar, which can be expanded on, to either make a kitchen or family room. Can you imagine having to heat this vast empty space? No wonder they're selling. That may be something they didn't consider- the utilities on a place this big.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm sure that the mezzanine and stairs were here. I don't know if the owners built the "rooms," or if they were here as offices, etc.
Tumblr media
Taking advantage of the cubicles, they made the 2 bedrooms that are in the description.
Tumblr media
The middle one is set up as an office.
Tumblr media
And, they turned the last one into a bath.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can't tell- they may have put up the walls to make the cubicles. Anyway, there are another 3 on the 2nd level.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the other bedrooms and they've hung rods for curtains in the large openings, both upstairs and down.
Tumblr media
Stairs to the basement.
Tumblr media
Down in the huge, open basement. What is in that cage? Looks like a very large bird.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have a kitchen table and a bedroom set up in the corner.
Tumblr media
There are some cabinets, but not a kitchen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It looks like they're using the former church kitchen as their kitchen.
Tumblr media
There's a serving window and maybe heat lamps? Notice how worn the floor is.
Tumblr media
Half bath down here.
Tumblr media
Plus storage.
Tumblr media
The front is cute with lattices on both sides of the door and it looks like they planted a garden and put up a chicken wire fence surrounding the property. Also, looking at the front, there has to be a cool bell tower inside.
Tumblr media
The carpet on the those stairs has to go.
Tumblr media
For the price it's a very large brick building. I wonder if there are fireplaces attached to the 2 big chimneys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The listing doesn't give the square footage of the lot, but it's gigantic.
Tumblr media
Cute brick BBQ needs redoing. Seriously, it's a large property with a lot of potential, for $235K, but the buyer will have to have some money set aside to fix it up.

Poem 3
So, before I share the poem, let me say this: this is the first draft. Part of the class was to revise one of the three poems, so I will be posting both revisions.
OGHS, March 2020
I sit in shock in the auditorium as they break the news.
“We will not be going to New York this year.”
The rest of the announcement is a complete blur.
What about our money? We all ask. Why can’t we reschedule?
It’s a storm of questions for teachers who don’t know what’s happening, either.
Two weeks off of school quickly turn into online school for two months.
This isn’t the senior year I imagined for myself.
No dinner theater, no senior trip, no senior prom, no senior cabaret.
But there’s another storm brewing inside me.
Independence Dam State Park, August 2020
I’m camping with my best friends.
We make pudgy pies over the fire.
It isn’t long before we start singing along to a cappella music.
The storm inside me is still brewing, still small and distant.
The fire helps.
It makes me forget about the storm for a night and allows me to enjoy the moment.
This is it, I think to myself. This is what family is.
Could it be that I just met my best friend a month and a half ago?
The storm returns as soon as I get back to my house.
Emerson Hall, November 2020
I’m sitting in my dorm room, the storm raging all around me.
Why can’t I find the words? I think as I stare at my phone.
It’s open to my conversation with my best friend.
Just say it; I’m nonbinary. That’s it.
Still, I can’t do it.
I find a tiktok that says it for me.
I hit send before I realize what happened.
Hours later, It’s just another thing about you. No big deal :)
A sigh of relief and a few tears.
Ottawa, December 2020
I know I can’t tell them.
It’s too unsafe.
But the storm is still there, and it’s getting strong again.
We get word games at Christmas.
What happens if we get below a certain score? A cousin asks.
You get kicked out of the family, his brother responds.
I have a comeback, but I keep it inside.
Do I really want to get disowned from the family because of a joke?
I decide it’s not worth it, and I laugh at the original joke.
Emerson Hall, January 2021
I’m back in my dorm.
The storm is still there, but it’s slightly calmer now.
I still have my phone open to my best friend’s contact.
I know my name now.
I just have to send the text.
You told me to keep you posted on if I would change my name. So, hi. My name is Aloe.
Hit send, throw down my phone, and freak out for the next hour.
It’s nice to meet you, Aloe :)))
Once again, a sigh of relief and a few tears.
Between Pandora and Beaverdam, April 2021
The storm has mostly subsided, for now.
I’m at my best friend’s house.
We just got back from the third funeral for a peer in two and a half years.
Why does this keep happening to us? What did we do wrong?
I know there’s no explaining it, but I still ask the questions.
I push my thoughts of grief to the side and just enjoy the presence of my best friend.
My best friend, whom I’ve known for less than a year.
My best friend, who has offered me their couch many times since that November morning.
My best friend, who is more of a sibling than a friend.
Camp Stonybrook, June 2021
I finally get to work at camp.
This has been my dream since I first stepped foot on camp.
I spend the summer out and proud.
The storm is a distant blur.
No one judges me, no one cares.
It’s a free, accepting, loving environment.
I don’t want to go home for the 4th of July.
The storm’s gone now, but it’s going to be back, I know it.
It always comes back when I’m home.
Columbus, 4th of July 2021
I’m at my uncle’s house with the rest of my family.
We’re celebrating the 4th of July.
I sit on the landscaping stones next to my uncle.
We have a conversation about college and diversity.
He tells me about how college opened his eyes and his mind.
I’m fighting the storm, but it’s stronger than ever.
Just tell him. He’s telling you that he’ll accept you.
But there’s too many people around, people I’m not ready to tell yet.
So I let the storm destroy the inside of me.
Etheridge Hall, August 2021
I’m sitting at my desk, alone.
My roommate is out with friends, while I stare at the pieces of paper in front of me.
I have written out my deepest secret, the storm.
It’s even bigger than it was on the 4th of July, and I didn’t think that was possible.
But here it is, blowing in the pride flags on my wall.
I take a deep breath, put the papers in the envelope, and seal it.
The walk to the mailbox is the longest walk of my life.
That was a Saturday. Wednesday, a response in the form of a text.
The storm is still here. But it doesn’t scare me quite as much.

Concept Reflection 1
My major is currently University Studies, but I would like to switch to Business Undecided. I am from Beaverdam, Virginia (about 30 minutes north of Richmond). I grew up with an older sister who is seven years older than me, and my younger brother is 16 months younger than me. I have a passion for horses and have been riding for almost eight years, and I own two horses. Throughout high school I played on the lacrosse team, and I am an active person. I agree with the conflict perspective because in today’s society nations and people are always looking to be more powerful, have the best technology, or have the most money.

Westminster School Explains the Importance of the Great Outdoors for Children
The Importance of the Great Outdoors for Children
As children spend increasingly less time enjoying nature and playing outdoors, an array of problems are arising in their development. From obesity to ADHD to depression, children in the United States have been struggling with major health challenges. For many, this is due to screen addictions and other unnatural shifts in lifestyles. Westminster School, a private school in Annandale, Virginia, discusses the importance of the outdoors for children and how its students immersed themselves in nature and outdoor activities this spring.
The Benefits of Being Outdoors
Physical fitness: The outdoors benefits a child’s body by providing adequate sources of vitamin D, improving distance vision, and offering opportunities to become physically fit. Activities like hiking; biking; or playing sports, such as football or running, keep children physically active and fit. This keeps diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, at bay.
Mental fitness: Recent studies show children and adults truly need to spend time in nature. Exposure to nature helps improve concentration and reduces anxiety. The unstructured play in nature fosters imagination and creativity. It also activates the senses of smell, sight, touch, and hearing. Overall, environment-based education is known to increase students’ performance on critical thinking skills tests. Moreover, as per the attention restoration theory, natural environments help people practice the attention called soft fascination. This practice increases pleasure and reduces the feeling of fatigue caused by urban environments.
Emotional wellness: Natural environments provide restful experiences and reduce the need for directed attention. This helps reduce stress levels, which fall within minutes of being in green spaces. A lot of unstructured time in nature allows children to escape from the hurried lifestyle that dominates the world today. Besides reducing anxiety and depression, being connected with nature also encourages more prosocial and empathetic behavior among children, according to research.
Westminster School Celebrates the Great Outdoors with Its Students
Westminster School celebrated this spring by arranging several outdoor activities for students across different grades. Not only were these activities about enjoying nature and playing outdoors, but they were also about fostering collaboration and sportsmanship.
A Visit to Camp Crowell
On April 18, the Griffin athletes spent the day at Crowell, a national Girl Scout camp in Oakton, Virginia. This was through the Inner Quest program. Despite the snow and sleet in the morning and rain, later on, the students were determined to stay outside as long as they could. After an indoor lunch, they played a few more cooperative games, reinforcing the day’s theme of teamwork.
On April 25, the fifth-graders enjoyed better weather and more activities at Camp Crowell, such as playing the "spotter” and the "flying squirrel."
The sixth-graders camped on May 2, engaged in cooperative activities, and enjoyed the zip line.
Ben from the fifth grade said, “It was so much fun to play with my friends at the camp. I am excited about the next camping trip!”
New Horizons Overnight Camp
On May 6, the eighth-graders journeyed to New Horizons for an overnight camping trip. After dinner in the New Horizons summer campground, the campers enjoyed active games, such as spider ball. In classic campout style, this was followed by delicious s'mores. Before returning to the city on Saturday morning, the eighth-graders took in the fresh air, hiking along Fridley Gap Trail.
Canoeing at Beaverdam Reservoir
On a sunny Monday, May 9, the seventh-graders completed their Inner Quest field trip with a visit to Beaverdam Reservoir. With spring in full bloom, the students soaked up the beauty surrounding them while they learned to canoe and to work together as a team.
Susan from seventh grade was ecstatic, “I can’t believe we managed to canoe across the reservoir. And it was so beautiful. The flowers. The water. The lovely weather.”
Capital Athletic Conference Track
After the single-grade outings, the Griffins worked together at the Capital Athletic Conference track meet on May 11 at Langley School. The Griffins brought home the second-place banner from a field that included six schools.
Charlie from the Griffins said, “We came second. It was a tough competition but we did it! I’m so excited to tell my parents and friends about this.”
Westminster School is proud of its students’ stellar athletic performance and participation. With the help of the school’s athletic director and PE teachers, the students not only enjoyed but succeeded in these athletic programs. These are an integral part of Westminster School’s well-rounded and complete educational experience.
Why Westminster School?
Established in 1962, Westminster School is a private school that follows the traditional and time-tested classical education for the forward-looking 21st century. The school adheres to high standards of education that set it apart from other public and private schools. Besides building a well-informed mind, strength of character, dedication to learning, generosity of spirit, and joy in the possibilities of life, the Westminster academic program trains students in basic subjects within a broad humanities curriculum.
The achievements of its graduates, both academic and personal, are a testament to the school’s effective, rich, carefully designed, well-implemented approach to education.

The first place, location No. 1 on the map, is commonly known as the “hay field” by local anglers. It is a long point that runs out from the hay field on the south side of the mouth of Sugar Creek. The fish could be anywhere on or near the point, which runs a long way out into Sugar Creek, almost to the old creek channel. Start on the top of the point in 12 to 15 feet; fish the top and sides of the point. Work your spoon off the side of the point out as deep as 25 feet. The fish will probably be in the 15to 20-foot range but sometimes will be deeper.
Spot No. 2 is straight across from Sugar Creek on the east side of the lake. A large flat just out from.the golf course at Port Armor has produced many fish for a lot of anglers over the years. Look for fish on top of the flat if they’re feeding in 10 to 15 feet of water. If they’re not actively feeding, search out the ledges around the flat where the bottom drops off. Again, most of the fish on the side of the Hat will be in 15 to 20 feet of water. Try to find a school of fish with your depth finder for the fastest action, but if that fails, keep dropping your spoon along the ledge looking for single fish. This approach will also work well at all the other spots.
Spot No. 3 might be the most popular place on the lake. Of course, I’m talking about the pipeline. It’s located south of Brantley’s Marina near one of the holes on the Great Waters golf course. The area of focus is a sharp drop located near and running parallel to the old river channel until it bends away from the shallows. Again, most of these fish will be in 15 to 20 feet of water. This area has probably produced more pounds of fish than any other place on the lake.
Spot No. 4 is where the river channel runs right up to the shoreline then curves away just past horseshoe bend. Start in 15 to 25 feet of water and work your way to the outside of the channel bend. At this spot and the remaining locations, the water is normally a bit more clear than the rest of the lake and the fish tend to be a little deeper.
Spot No. 5 is the long point at the intersection of Double Creek and Richland Creek. Use your locator to find the large boulders submerged just off the point. Most of the rocks will be in 12 to 20 feet of water and will rise 5 to 10 feet off the bottom. The largest boulder is probably 30 yards long and rises to within 8 feet of the surface before dropping off into 25 feet of water almost instantly. It has a little bit of wood structure still left around it and normally has some sizable largemouths located around it. The other rocks are not as large as the biggest one but could still give up more fish than the largest one.
Spot No. 6 is a submerged rock house located just north of Rocky Creek at the point of timber near an osprey’s nest. The roof of the old house lies about 5 feet below the surface and drops off into 25 feet of water. Fish your spoon on and around the old house out to as deep as 30 feet. This spot has always been a bass hangout.
Spot No. 7 is the left side point of the largest cove about halfway between Sandy Creek and Beaverdam Creek on the east side of the lake. This point runs out about halfway across this cove. The Richland Creek side of the point has some wood structure left in 15 to 25 feet of water and is normally the best part of the point to fish. This particular place normally has all types of bass on it.
Spot No. 8 could be the real sleeper of all these locations; it could produce a lot of fish or none at all. It is a rarely fished point just south of the cove at Armor Bridge ramp. The point is not revealed by the shoreline, but you can find it easily with your locator. It runs out at a depth of about 15 feet and then drops off on all sides. A good east wind for several days will push a lot of shad into this cove, therefore, check it out after a low pressure weather system has moved through and the pressure is rising; this is the likeliest time for a steady east wind.
Of course there are other places scattered all over the lake that are as good or better than these that I’ve mentioned. A good locator and a lot of patience will enable you to find many new places around the lake. If you find suspended fish on one of these or any other place during the day, come back to it later or on another day when the fish are located near or on the bottom. Suspended fish are normally inactive and hard to catch. bite.

Father drowns saving twin daughters in Atlantic Ocean
ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. — A Virginia father died Friday after he swam into the Atlantic Ocean to help his twin daughters who were having trouble swimming, according to his colleague at the real-estate firm Spotts & Carneal.
The man, identified as 48-year-old Charles Austin Joy, of Beaverdam, was in cardiac arrest when emergency workers arrived to help.
The family annually vacations at Atlantic Beach, though this particular trip was a surprise for the kids who just finished school.
The two girls were challenged by the current and their father swam out to save them. The children were brought back to shore safely.
“We picked him up and performed advanced cardiac life support,” Atlantic Beach Fire/EMS Chief Adam Snyder said in an interview with Carolina Coast publication. “We couldn’t get a response.”
Joy drowned near Bogue Banks at about 7:13 p.m. Friday. On-duty lifeguards leave the beach around 5:30 p.m. during summer months.
Chief Adam Snyder said Friday was a “yellow flag” day. Swimmers were advised to swim with caution due to moderate currents.
Joy, a graduate from the College of William and Mary, worked with Spotts & Carneal for 23 years.
The company issued a statement, but declined to go on camera:
Austin Joy started working at Spotts and Carneal, Inc. 23 years ago. During that time he became the primary leasing agent and sales agent for properties in the Carytown District. He loved Carytown, it’s people and watching businesses succeed. To his associates at the company he will always be remembered for his snappy dress, honesty and loyalty to his customers and friends. He will be sorely missed by all.

Matt Nuckols wants you to know a thing or two about dairy farm life.
This is Cinderella. But she's not a princess — she's a cow.
And not just any cow; Cinderella happens to be one of the most popular cows in all of Virginia.

Cinderella and her owner, dairy farmer Matt Nuckols, make regular appearances around the state. They’ve been to schools, agriculture clubs, competitions, state fairs, and more. Cinderella has even met the past five Miss Virginias and the governor's wife.
Matt and his cows are on a mission to show people, firsthand, what it's like to live and work on a dairy farm.
Eastview Farm has been in Matt's family for decades. It started as a more traditional operation in the mid-1940s — "kind of the Old MacDonald-type farm," Matt says — before his grandparents started the dairy portion of the business in 1955. The farm was passed to Matt's dad, F.C., and uncle, Wayne, who then passed it on to Matt and his cousin Taylor.

The cousins have been working on the farm for as long as they can remember. "I started feeding calves as the first job I worked," Matt says. "I was about 5 or 6 years old."
Technically, F.C. and Wayne are retired now, but that doesn't really mean much. "My dad only works about 13 hours a day," Matt laughs. "They're cutting back."
This connection between family and farming is actually pretty common across the country. According to the 2012 census of agriculture, 98% of farms in America are family-owned and -operated.
Eastview Farm is a beautiful place to live, both for the Nuckols and for their cows. Photo courtesy of Matt Nuckols/Eastview Farm.
Matt also attends events so he can show people what a living, breathing farmer is like.
He aims to combat some of the stereotypical ideas about farming he hears from people, many of whom have never met a dairy farmer or been on a farm themselves.
Some of the places he and Cinderella go are full of other farmers, like fairs, competitions, and cow shows. But they also go to schools and colleges to talk about dairy farming.
Matt often takes cows out into the community to teach adults and kids alike about farming. Photo courtesy of Matt Nuckols/Eastview Farm.
"A lot of it is just getting to meet a farmer," says Matt. "People see we actually come in different sizes and shapes and accents and musical preferences."
Matt also lets the people he meets know his strong opinions on the way he runs his farm with respect to how milk is made, how it's shipped, and how the cows are treated.
One of the ways that Eastview Farm holds itself accountable for the animals' well-being is through the National Dairy FARM Program — a third-party reviewer that makes sure participating dairies handle their cows with care. And Matt isn't alone in that — 98% of the milk supply in the United States comes from dairies enrolled in FARM.
He hopes to be able to get those messages across whenever he can — but of course, it depends on the audience. "Young kids mostly just want to know how much the cows weigh and how old they are and stuff," Matt says.
The Nuckols often participate in events and interact with people who are curious about dairying. Photo courtesy of Matt Nuckols/Eastview Farm.
But with the parents and teachers who accompany them, Matt can open a direct dialogue about dairy practices, from antibiotics and organics to the size of the farm and beyond.
As long as people are willing to listen, Matt's going to keep talking about what he does.
"People want to know so much more about their food — where it comes from, how it got to the store, and how the cows are treated," Matt says. "And I know they're gonna get information from somebody. So we really want to get out there and give them the information ourselves."
