made the mistake of checking dune twitter and all i can say is frank herbert himself would be astounded by the misogyny because tell my why people are pitting irulan and chani against each other. why are they turning it into a contest. and for god's sake why are they determining the winner based on who a random man wanted to fuck more. this is peak pick me behavior and both of these women - book and movie versions alike- would be appalled and disappointed. shame on all of you

in regards to the (not new) wave of t.entoorose discourse, i wanted to make my feelings clear on it: the reason i do not like that ending for rose is due to the way it stripped her of her agency & autonomy. while this is a reoccurring theme with the d.octor & his companions, it is often portrayed as a bad thing, something the d.octor should feel guilty for because sometimes their own ego gets in the way of their ability to respect their companions choices.
that is not how it is portrayed with rose & the m.etacrisis. it is portrayed as this act of love, as this thing that was GOOD for rose, even though it goes completely against everything she wishes / has worked for.
do i think rose & the m.etacrisis would have lived a long happy life together? fuck yeah i do. that's why i have my regen verse, but i do think that the way it was portrayed is completely fucked up. i think if given the choice, rose would not have gone with the m.etacrisis, both because of the fact that he isn't necessarily to her the d.octor AT FIRST, & (primarily) because she did not want to go back to p.ete's world. in d.oomsday, she makes this clear. in the b.ig finish audios, she makes this clear, that that is not her home, not her world.
in my main verse: having p.ete's world reject rose is kinda like a be careful what you wish for, you got what you wanted, sort of ordeal. i'm adding the m.etacrisis into that too because i think that feeling of abandonment that rose had in j.ourney's end is important to rose's character & the choice of action is important to the d.octor's character. now:
why am i so content with having the m.etacrisis forget rose too? doesn't he deserve a happy ending?
the theme of the m.etacrisis is that the man who always loses gets to win, & if that were the ONLY instance we had of d.avid t.ennant's d.octor getting this arc, eh, maybe i'd feel worse off. but r.td reused that shit, & now f.ourteen gets that too. the m.etacrisis does still remain family with j.ackie & p.ete & m.ickey as well in that universe.
i do not like the way d.octor who portrayed a woman losing her agency & her autonomy to make her own decisions as this big romantic gesture. this is NOT a jab at t.entoorose, its a jab more so at the t.enth d.octor & r.td. this is NOT a jab at t.entoorose SHIPPERS, because i get it. i ship t.enrose, i ship t.imepetals, those aren't healthy ships. just wanting to clarify because i don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, & all i'm asking is that MY opinion of it be respected just like i respect people who love rose's ending.

about lyra erso, I think from a storytelling point of view I wasn’t so quick to jump about how illogical lyra's decision was because it not only set the tone for how dire the situation was, but also the idea of being the type of person that willingly goes into a suicide mission
You have to be stupid lol. The plan was jyn, lyra and saw would be safe while galen is once again taken. Imagine jyn letting cassian getting taken captive for the empire for her. Your child has been promised to be looked after by someone you trusted with your life. Ain’t no fucking way. I don’t think this is one of those fridge and forget things because it was more important to show that she was almost there to safety but literally chose not to. She didn’t barely escape their clutches. They had everything planned ahead of time and doesn’t that say even more that she turned around and wouldn’t take guaranteed personal safety over the chance of losing her cassian?
I absolutely agree it was foolish, reckless, dumb. Is this any less stupid than invading an imperial base with 10 people and actually finding the plans. Or being an imperial seeking agreement with a violent extremist who collects stormtrooper heads for sport. Or risking your life to go back for a criminal who's a loose end. These were options for these people and that's where I feel like the point about motherhood is against lyra when it's a little more exaggerated than it should. Should she not do what she believes is right because she is a mother? Because it’s not like any one of these people knew they were going to succeed, and the difference was that she was the one who didn’t. I just think there is a higher disproportion to the reaction of her seemingly putting her child at risk, when in the worst case she would be looked after by saw. She did in the end happen to fail her daughter. But would lyra not die soon anyway trying to do what was right because isn't that who she was?
So her as a person, I still think she's a fine character. And i’m fine with the path taken because it speaks to who she was and majorly influences the whole plot without completely erasing her.
This whole movie is literally a bunch of people going “trust me bro” and the other half being like “bro no.” Because people are crazy to believe in shit for reasons like what happened to lyra, but when even the smallest acts line up so perfectly, it’s maybe worth it. It's the point that you tried. Every one of rogue one died not knowing whatsoever if they were even successful. If ANY of it was worth it period. lyra was just the first member, because jyn had exactly her mother's mentality and passion when coming into scarif. And we know it was not only saw's influence because she had to hear galen’s actions, also motivated by lyra, for her to remember who she was.

So, I just know all of Tumblr was wondering, "hey, you remember that really weird ZoLaw fan with the annoyingly overly stylized post? I wonder if she's seen this and if she has any theories or thoughts, an observation or two?"
Well, allow me to set your wandering mind at ease, fictional Tumblr fan. The answer is: No. No, I really don't.
I have like three hundred.
[I also spent time just trying to track down as many translations as possible. Is Tera A Criminal's Daughter or The Daughter Of Thieving Bandits! These are CLEARLY separate things and can ENTIRELY change how her utter nonpresence in Zoro's life shaped him! Though I can take comfort in knowing that, regardless of what kind of crimes her father was committing they were more important than anything his daughter ever did in her entire life.]
And, hey, as might as well jump right into that whole mess.
1. Wait, Zoro's mom is dead? Thank goodness, I was worried Oda forgot one!
(AKA: Stop. Murdering. Moms.)
I'll go first, I don't mind saying when I was wrong. True, in the past I may have suggested that the vast majority of female characters in One Piece come off as ever so slightly, "leaning into sexist tropes with unadulterated joy; it's the misogynistic tropes equivalent of a child running naked through a grocery store. It's right there, everyone sees it, yet people shut up and continue shopping in part because, well, these days you just expect most people to cover that junk! What would you even say? And if you DO speak up and call out the inappropriate, be prepared for blank stares and tantrums; but THEY don't mind! THEY don't think it's wrong! You're just being mean!"
More or less a direct quote.
However, I see now that I rushed to judgement and the reality of the situation is far more nuanced. With that in mind, I was just wondering if someone could help answer some of the questions I have.
Like: Why does Oda believe that it's illegal for (maternal) female characters to survive other character's backstories?
More importantly, why hasn't someone just reached out to explain the misconception!? It can't be that difficult. If nothing else, just have a lawyer or judge or other expert in censorship on hand. Or is the one of those cases where back in highschool his friends made something up and then kept pretending it was real to see if he'd believe you and not only did he fall for it, it took over 20 years before he learned that, what, no that's not illegal. That would be crazy if it were an actual law. Cause you know, after the first 10 years I think yeah you have to just lean into it. Pretend it's a creative decision on your part and definitely not because you were terrified of being sentenced to a slow and humiliating public death.
Just to be clear that's definitely what's up, right? I mean, I'm struggling to think of another reason....able excuse why a story that I really enjoy keeps playing the same old sexist tropes cards again and again to the point of absurdity. It would just help if I had a valid excus- explanation. I almost mistyped the word explanation.
....
....
So I imagine it went like.
"That's the third mangaka they've had to Publically Execute this week!"
"They've started taking this law way more serious lately."
"This one really deserved it though! I heard his main character has a mother in her late forties!"
"That does seem old to have your first child."
"No, he's the middle of three and 22 years old. The story even has flashbacks of defining moments in his childhood and never once did she try to sacrifice herself for him, get murdered by his enemies, or die in meaningless unrelated accidents."
"Damn, that's cold to be there for all the protagonist core moments and not die and help him develop and grow a character? They must have a very antagonistic relationship. Is she actually the villain."
"Not that we know, and when they asked about this being a possible plot twist since - obviously if she's evil no laws are being broken."
"Well, of course, that's the whole reason Statue 2-dash-57 exists; if creators can show they have consistently been building up to a surprise twist then the female character in question can continue to live so long as she continues to be unrepentant and unlikable until the resolution of her arch by the protagonist."
"That's the thing! Under oath not only did man present no evidence to support her identity as a secret villain, he went on the record stating he wanted to depict their relationship as one of a normal modern 20 year old and his mother."
"That can't be true! What publishing company would even print that!?"
"It gets worse. I told you he was a middle child? Well, according to those who've read the actual manga, his younger sister was really sick as a child."
"Oh, well, at least-"
"It was just a fish allergy. She's perfectly fine."
"Sometimes I feel this law is unnecessarily harsh but.... Then you hear stories like that, and you realize that some people really are monsters."

Them <3
I've definitely talked about my angsty feelings regarding bombstrap before, so I won't clog your dash; but know that I love them a lot.
I think it definitely picked up steam in the past couple of years compared to the period between the early 2000s and the most recent fandom revival (which was pretty...hmm, for various reasons ngl, and there was *lots* of debate over which ship was "better"), which is nice, so perhaps not *as* underrated as it once was. Either way, lots of performers play up *something* between them, so I am happy either way.

WHAT KIND OF VILLAIN ARE YOU ?
No Moral Compass
You are cold, analytical, and you strive to be as objective as a person of flesh and blood can be. Either don't understand the concepts of good and evil, or you understand it perfectly and think it's a load of bull. Some may call you selfish, some may call you unfeeling, but you're just doing what you believe will yield the best results, plain and simple. Why bother with petty ideals of right or wrong when you can do what will actively help those you give a fuck about? Your goals may be selfish or noble or anything in between, but you will not let anyone make you feel like garbage for going after them. You couldn't care less about what people brand you as. You just care about getting shit done by any means necessary.

💥Teruteru...'s mom
like omg, teruteru's mom was SO underused, kodaka is such a shitty writer for not giving her her own subplot about *spins wheel* ... her miscarried daughter and how she was dealing with her son's *throws dart* ... new boyfriend from an exchange class, eventually leading to her discovering *reaches into a hat and pulls out a wet tissue* ... that she was actually patient zero for covid-19. like it's SUCH wasted potential.

on another irony i went back to look for Road’s song out of nostalgia while at it and the only thing youtube knew to do was shove STEP from a3 in my way, for NO reason, but only to have me stare, confused, almost yelling, about why out of all the a3 songs to shove my way it had to be the one with Kanda’s second seiyuu while i was specifically talking about the dgm seiyuu coincidences that had been following me.

I think one thing we need to address in the US if we want to de-stigmatize multi-generational households that include ADULTS from multiple generations, is that parents need to learn how to have adult relationships with their offspring.
Should my daughter deign to live with me when she's an adult she will not be my some vassal that has to obey my household rules. She graduates into being a peer in setting and managing the boundaries, cleanliness and appearance of our home.
Too many parents want to have relationships with grown ass adults in which the parents maintain control and authority, and in which they leverage money and history to get their way from an adult who, very reasonably, wants to be able to make choices and have influence. And then those parents wonder why their kids keep their distance!
But then people act like I've lost it because I let my 5 year old pick the color of paint in her room- a room I seldom spend time in except to take care of her, and a room in which I want her to be comfortable and happy.
I'm not gonna let her choose a paint color for the kitchen right now, because she's capricious and bad at negotiating so we can pick a color we all like. But when she's an adult, if she's still living here? Why shouldn't she get to influence her environment?
People like to have agency. We limit the agency of children because they make choices without the full ability to understand the results (sorry baby, you are gonna get vaccinated for pollio even if you don't like it. You don't understand pollio).
But limiting an adults choices in their own home, just because you don't think that home should be a real home for them because it's just for you, is kind of an asshole move, to me.
No need to argue with me if you disagree. You can have your own opinion.
But I couldn't treat my kid that way, and I have seen enough to know that not every parent treats their adult children like permanently incompetent interlopers.
I didn't just buy this house for ME. I bought it for MY FAMILY. My baby is my family, and she will be no matter how old she gets.

Do you also think that het women being raped isnt as bad and that they could enjoy it because they're attracted to men?
did you even read the post? the whole thing is about how being penetrated against your will is more dangerous/degrading than being forced to penetrate someone else...

My unpopular (why) opinion is that Toshiro's and Falin's relationship (platonic obviously) is quite beautiful and if fans weren't so odd about shipping they'd see how very sweet it is that Toshiro started liking Falin when he realised she's an odd but gentle person, when he felt a sense of kinship that he likely never felt before.
From what we see they got along, Falin has a positive opinion of him, on the few instances when we actually see them talk (beyond just memories of them talking but no actual dialogue being shown to us) it's obvious she feels comfortable enough to be completely honest and transparent with him, while still minding his feelings. She likes the guy well enough, she doesn't want to hurt him.
The marriage proposal is actually so interesting... The way they communicate with each other. Falin let's Toshiro down gently, and reveals something so intimate about herself, how she's behaved until now, what she wants to do in the future, that she'd like to visit him again!
And Toshiro is so gentle. He obviously cares about her so much (and water is wet BUT im talking specifically about how it's portrayed in this scene). If what Maizuru says is true, that was the second time he made a "selfish" request ("marry me and come with me") but he simply asks this from her and offers reassurances, "I'll make sure you're comfortable", but he's not you know the Hardass some people pretend he is.
And what I love the most... When she rejects him not only does he accept it gracefully, he's inspired by her declaration that she wants to be more independent. Why did Falin say that? To spare his feelings further? Or because she knew that this realisation, which meant so much to her, would resonate with Toshiro too?
Gonna get personal but. I'm aroace, hello. I've had a few friendships go to shit because someone confessed to me and I rejected them. And exactly one where the person accepted it gracefully and our friendship, after surviving an awkward moment, blossomed.
Like. Relationships CHANGE, and they can develop and deepen and strengthen in many ways, regardless of the dynamic they take on. When aspecs say "friendship can be as important as romance" one of the things we mean is, allow romantic love to go back to platonic love and be stronger regardless OR EVEN because of it.
Like. How beautiful, that these two recognised a bit of themselves in each other, and knew how to approach the other. How beautiful that Ryoko tells us "their friendship survived a rejected proposal, when the commonly used trope would've made their friendship unviable from then on".
How beautiful that narratively Toshiro's sacrifice is never played for laughs or made fun of or devalued because """he didn't get the girl""', but instead the manga says "it didn't pan out but it wasn't a pointless sacrifice because Toshiro genuinely cared for Falin as a person, and always did what he thought was best even when it went against his normal behaviour." How beautiful that Falin wants to meet his friend Toshiro again, that she thinks to tell him "I'm going to start being an active participant in my own life" and Toshiro thinks "I think I need to start doing that too".
How beautifullll that a rejection ended with a promise to meet again, it's so beautiful am I insane? Can someone hear me hello?
The love was there and it mattered, but it's even better. The love shifts and survives because the care is genuine, because when you truly care about a person you'll want them in your life in whatever dynamic suits everyone involved the best. Because love, whether romantic or platonic or a mix of something else entirely, is selfless.
