Cool Games I Finished In 2020 (In No Real Order)
Oh, hey! Right! I have a website! I’m like a week late on writing this, but what’s a week on top of an entire year of not writing, right? 2020 was... well, we all know what 2020 was. For me personally, it was simultaneously the best and worst year of my life. The worst in both ways you can probably assume and ways you definitely can’t (neither of which I’ll be getting into), and the best in ways I absolutely never would have guessed. That uncertain job I mentioned last year got very suddenly much more certain, at a much bigger company, for a much larger amount of money. That allowed me to get my own place, making my weird living situation much less weird. Still haven’t gotten the majority of my belongings off of the east coast, but if the entire world wasn’t currently fucked up by a global pandemic I’d have sorted all that out too. What I’m saying is that, for the third year in a row, my life has been a complete whirlwind that has left me very little time to get comfortable with any aspect of it. But I did manage to play more video games than I did last year! Which is perfect, because it’s once again time for another one of these. Here’s a bunch of cool games I experienced for the first time in 2020.
Tumblr media
Astro’s Playroom (PlayStation 5, 2020)
My one word description of Astro's Playroom is "delightful". It's just an absolute goddamn delight. A total surprise too! Included with every PlayStation 5, Astro's Playroom is, in my opinion, one of the best pack-in games of all time.
First off, it's an incredible tech demo for the PS5's new DualSense controller. It was easy to brush off Sony's talk about the controller's haptic feedback and triggers as some Nintendo-style HD Rumble bullshit, but it really is incredibly cool once you get your hands on it. The game is obviously more than a tech demo though, or else it wouldn't be on here. It also just so happens to be an extremely solid and fun platformer on top of that. Astro controls exceptionally well and the levels are all well-designed and fun, even the gimmick vehicle ones designed to show off different features of the controller. It also has an oddly compelling speedrun mode, made all the more compelling by the PS5 notifying you when your friends beat your times and the ability to load into it within two seconds from anywhere on the console. But the biggest thing for me and, call me a mark, because I am, is that the game is an honestly incredible love letter to PlayStation history.
For the first time ever, Sony has pulled off a nostalgia piece without it ending up as embarrassing garbage in the vein of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. There's a Nintendo-like joyful reverence for all things PlayStation oozing out of every single corner of this game. There are so many nods and references and gags for literally every PlayStation thing of note throughout the the last 25 years, and then on top of that there's a whole heap more for the things that AREN'T of note that only hyperdorks like me would get! A sly reference to the ill-fated boomerang controller? Yep. A goof on the fat PS3's Spider-Man font? You betcha. A trophy you can earn by repeatedly punching a Sony Interactive Entertainment sign until it breaks and reveals the Sony Computer Entertainment sign it was slapped on top of? Yeah buddy. It's deep cuts all the way down, even up until the final boss which had me grinning like a total dipshit the entire time. The game is endlessly, effortlessly charming.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo Switch, 2020)
Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the perfect game at the perfect time. That doesn't mean it's a perfect game, I actually have some issues with it, but it could not have released at a better time than when it did. It came out at the very very beginning of everyone going into lockdown due to the pandemic, and it was the biggest game in the world for a couple of months as a result. I played like 300 hours and that pales in comparison to the amount of time many others put into it.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the most different Animal Crossing game there's ever been, and I'm of two minds on it. Like, I loved the game, I played a ton of it, but it's lacking so much of the stuff that made me love Animal Crossing in the first place. The series has been slowly trending in this direction for a bit now, but it's not really a game that happens around you anymore. It's all about total player control. You select where everything goes, you customize every detail of everything to your liking, hell, you can even terraform the landmass to be exactly what you want. Your neighbors take a backseat in focus and end up as little more than decorations with limited dialogue and next to no quests associated with them. Series staples like Gyroids are missing in action. Facilities and services that have been around since Wild World aren't implemented. It's similar to past Animal Crossing games in a lot of ways, but on the whole it feels like a different thing.
But like I said, two minds. New Horizons strays from what I truly want from an Animal Crossing game, but I can't deny that the game as it is is a hell of a lot of fun. There's SO much you can do and SO many options, it's super addictive. Plus it implemented my long-requested feature of letting you effortlessly send mail to friends online! Too bad the actual online play is as cumbersome as ever.
In conclusion, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a land of contrasts. I'm kidding. It's good, but definitely missing something in a way where I can understand some people being disappointed in it. I had a ton of fun though, and I'm probably going to get back into it later in 2021.

Trials of Mana (Nintendo Switch, 2019)
Late in 2019, with the physical release of Collection of Mana for the Switch, I decided I was going to play through each game on it for the first time and finally find out what this whole Mana thing was about. I went into Final Fantasy Adventure (the first game in the Mana series, because every RPG had to be Final Fantasy back then) with zero expectations and found a totally serviceable little Zelda-like with light RPG elements. I enjoyed my time with it. I went into Secret of Mana with the expectation of it being a beloved classic and found the worst game I beat that year, hands down. That game fucking sucks. I get why it made an impression on people at the time, but it's just so so SO awful to play. Needless to say I was pretty disappointed. Honestly, I would have been disappointed even if I hadn't heard it was one of "the best games" for so long. It would have been a disappointing follow-up to Final Fantasy Adventure, a game that in and of itself isn't anything incredible. Secret of Mana is just that rotten.
I braced myself for more disappointment when (after a much needed vacation from the series) I started up Trials of Mana. This game had a reputation too, as a long-lost classic that never made it stateside. One of the best games on the Super Nintendo, criminally never released for western audiences! Like Secret of Mana before it, I'd heard nothing but effusive praise. Unlike Secret of Mana, however, I was very pleased to find out that Trials of Mana mostly lives up to the hype. From a gameplay standpoint, Trials is an improvement on Secret in almost every single way. It's not perfect. The menus are still kinda clunky, animations for things like magic and items are still frequently disruptive. But the main thing is it actually plays like a sensible video game designed by humans with brains. Attacking is responsive! Hitboxes aren't complete nonsense! You don't constantly get stunlocked to death! There are more answers to combat than casting the same spell for five straight minutes to kill your enemies before they get a chance to move! It's great!
On top of being an enjoyable video game to actually play, the presentation is top notch. Secret of Mana could be a pretty game with decent music in some spots, but Trials is consistently gorgeous and the soundtrack is across the board great instead of randomly having songs that sound like clown vomit. And while Trials of Mana doesn't have the deepest story in the world, it manages to avoid being completely paper-thin like Secret. The story actually kind of has a reason for being a bit straightforward, and the reason is that it has a really cool system where you pick your three playable characters from a pool of six. Each character has their own goals and storyline, some of which line up with other potential party members, some of which don't, and you'll even run into the characters you didn't choose as NPCs along the way. This and the relatively brisk pace of the game make it highly replayable.
I'm really glad that Trials of Mana made it over here in an official capacity, even if it was like 25 years late. It's as good as I expected Secret of Mana to be and singlehandedly saved my interest in seeing any more of the series. I'm aware the quality of what came after is very spotty, but I'll get to the rest eventually!

Final Fantasy VII Remake (PlayStation 4, 2020)
They (almost) did it. They (basically) pulled it off. They remade (a chunk of) Final Fantasy VII and (for the most part) didn't fuck it up. Ok, funny parentheticals aside, Final Fantasy VII Remake is astoundingly good coming off of over two decades of just absolutely dreadful post-FF7 sequels, side games, and movies.
Final Fantasy VII has been historically misremembered as this kind of miserable, angsty, brooding thing, both by fans and by the company that made it. FF7-branded media after FF7 itself is a minefield of changed personalities, embarrassing original characters, and monumentally lame stories. Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first post-FF7 anything that actually remembers the characters, setting, and plot of Final Fantasy VII and what made them memorable and special to people in the first place. Which isn't to say it's a slavish recreation! There's a ton of changes and additions, and I actually like almost all of them! Except for some really big stuff I'll touch on in a bit!
The combat in Final Fantasy VII Remake is great. I was super skeptical about it when the game was first announced, but they actually managed to make the blend of real-time action and turn-based RPG menuing fun and engaging. The characters all play super differently from each other too, which is a huge and welcome difference from the original game. The Materia system fits like a glove in this revamped combat system as well. The remixed music is good as hell, and the visuals are beautiful (outside of a couple of very specific spots that I'm kinda of surprised they haven't fixed in a patch yet). It's a well-executed package all around.
But alas, as always, there are negatives. For starters, this is only part one of the overall Final Fantasy VII Remake project. It goes up to the party leaving Midgar which, as you may or may not recall, is the first six hours of the original game. They compensated for this by fleshing the hell out of the Midgar section the game, ballooning the overall playtime to total of about 30-ish hours. The game feeling padded is a common complaint but for what it's worth, I didn't really feel it until the unnecessarily long final dungeon, There's also the previously mentioned and funny parenthetical'd changes and additions I don't like.
This is big time spoilers for this game so if you don't want that jump ahead to the next game on the list. The Whispers suck ass. Final Fantasy VII Remake should have been brave enough to be different without having to constantly derail everything in the most ham-fisted and intrusive way possible. You can have Jessie twist her ankle without making a spooky plot ghost trip her. I don't want to fight the physical manifestation of the game everyone thought they were getting as an end boss. If you're not doing a straight remake, that's fine, but have the fucking guts to stand by your artistic decisions without feeling the need to invent the lamest deus ex machina I've ever fucking seen. The last couple of hours of this game are 100% about the Whispers and are awful for it. It's a true testament to the strength of the rest of Final Fantasy VII Remake that this aspect didn't completely sour me on it. I can only hope that they stay dead and gone for good in the games yet to come and the remake can be different while standing on its own two feet.
I truly cannot wait for the next entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake project. I'm excited for Final Fantasy VII in a way I haven't been since the late 90s. I have a bit of trepidation that they could royally screw it up. I mean, they already got kinda close, as I said in my last paragraph. But they got so much right in this entry that, for the first time in decades, I'm willing to believe in Square Enix when it comes to Final Fantasy VII.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (PlayStation 4, 2020)
My one word description of 13 Sentinels is "fucking crazy". I realize that's two words, but shut up. A bizarre hybrid of visual novel, adventure game, and strategy RPG, 13 Sentinels not only makes that work, but makes it work incredibly well.
The story is fucking bonkers. It's told entirely non-linearly and is purposefully dense and confusing, but it does an amazing job of hooking you with a cast of likable characters and some impressively well-paced twists, made all the more impressive by the fact that you can tackle the story in basically whatever order you want. I'll say it again for those in the back, the story is Fucking Bonkers. Wherever you think it's going, it's not going. Where it is going is PLACES. Seriously, if you want a wild goddamn ride, this is the game for you. The presentation is also stunning. It's a drop dead gorgeous game with a really nice soundtrack. Easily Vanillaware's best looking game, which is saying something seeing as looking good is Vanillaware's whole deal.
If I had to levy one criticism against the game, it's that the strategy RPG portion is just kind of ok. It's enjoyable enough, it doesn't get in the way and there's not too much of it, but once it starts introducing armored versions of previous enemy types it's kind of done doing anything different. It is really good at getting people to out themselves as having no idea what tower defense is as a genre though!

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (Nintendo Switch, 2018)
I haven't really historically been a "Musou Guy". Not to say I've actively disliked them, they're just not something I've seeked out very often or played very much of. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition kinda turned me into a "Musou Guy" a little bit? It's good, surprisingly-less-mindless-than-you'd-think fun.
I actually super don't care about the Zelda branding. I think all the fanservice stuff is meh at best. What I do care about is that there's a ton of character variety and a metric shitload of content. There's so many different characters and weapons for those characters that all play differently from one another and SOOOOOO many levels to play. Like the story mode is, again, kinda meh, the real meat of the game is the Adventure mode and there's a ton of it. It's 8 different world maps, each based off a different Zelda game, with each square of the map containing a little mini-scenario with unique objectives and rewards. There has to be at least 1000 scenarios between all the maps. There's so much. And that's not even getting into some of the other side stuff like the challenge modes and the fairy raising. It's a crazy amount of game in this game.
And again, it's not as mindless as it'd seem. It's not really a game ABOUT destroying 5000 guys, it's an area control and resource management game where the 5000 guys are one of those resources. Knowing who to send where and when to fight who is way more important than pressing the XXX YYY XXX YYY on the more than one million troops.
I'd say that if you're even cursorily potentially maybe interested in a musou game, this is the one to try. And if you like it, it could literally be your forever game. A sequel came out recently too, and I'm looking forward to trying that out soon.

Phantasy Star Online 2 (Xbox One, 2020)
Phantasy Star Online 2 finally came stateside in the year 2020, eight years after its initial Japanese release and initial American cancellation. It's no Phantasy Star Online 1, but it is a really fun game in its own right provided you can find the willpower to break through its clunkiness and eight years of confusing poorly tutorialized free-to-play MMO cruft.
The main thing going for PSO2, and this is a major improvement from PSO1, is that the act of engaging in its combat is fun. The combat is just feels really really good. There's a bunch of different weapon types and classes, and once you find the ones that really click with you you're in for a good time, whether you're izuna dropping dudes with wire claws or literally doing air juggles and rainstorm from Devil May Cry with the dual machine guns.
The other stuff around that combat is weird. I generally like it, but it's weird. The story mode is one of the most bizarrely presented things I've ever seen. It apparently used to be something you'd seek out in the levels themselves, but presently it's just a list of scenes you pick from a menu and watch with next to no context until it makes you fight a boss sometimes. There's some weird moments in there that MIGHT have been cool if it were presented in literally any other way?
The systems and presentation are also way more... I dunno, pinball? Pachislot? In very stark contrast to how chill original Phantasy Star Online was, everything in PSO2 is designed in a way to maximize that flashy light bing bing wahoo you got ~*~RARE DROP CHANCE UP~*~  feeling. Which isn't to say I don't like flashy light bing bing wahoo, but it's a weird different thing.
Was it worth the wait? Yeah, sure! For me! This is another one that I played like 300 hours of! I haven't even seen half of it, I fell off right before Episode 4 released because it coincided with my move! I'm gonna go back and see all that shit! PSO2's fun! A different flavor of fun than the original, sure, but fun all the same. Another one that I'm glad finally made it over here.

Riichi Mahjong (A Table, 1924)
Holy shit I fucking did it I finally learned how to play Mahjong and it rules.
It started when I picked up Clubhouse Games for the Switch. I saw that it had Riichi Mahjong and something in my brain snapped. For whatever reason, I decided that this was the time I was going to rip the band-aid off and figure this shit out. It wasn't too dissimilar to the first time I decided to try eggs, but that's a different and much stupider story for a different time. I did the tutorial in Clubhouse Games, looked up some more basics and advice because the tutorial wasn't super amazing, and I kept playing while being aided by the game's nice helper features like the button that pulls up recommended hands. I kept playing and... sorta got it. I learned the basic rules, but none of the strategy. And then I stopped playing for a few months.
In that few months, for whatever reason, a decent amount of people I know had their brains snap the same way? Like a more-than-two amount of people I'm either friends with or following online also decided to learn Mahjong. I decided to get back on the horse and downloaded Mahjong Soul and I don't know whether it was perseverance or the power of anime babes, but this time I got it. I still refer to a sheet with all the hands and whether they work open or closed, and I'm by no means a master player, but I actually honest to god understand what I'm doing and it's an incredible feeling.
Mahjong has such a huge amount of what I like to call "Get That Ass" energy. It is the energy you feel when you get someone's ass. In Mahjong you are either constantly getting someone's ass or getting your ass gotten. Someone puts down the wrong tile and you fucking GET THEIR ASS DUDE! They're got!! They're a fucking idiot that put down the wrong thing and now you have their points!!! Or you draw what you need yourself and you're a brain genius all according to plan and everyone gives you points because you're so wise!!!! It's great!!!!!
Mahjong has long been one of those games where I'd say "I'll learn this someday" and never reeeeally actually try to learn, and I'm so glad I finally took the effort to because it's good as hell. And, truth be told, it wasn't THAT hard to learn? Like you can get to the point where I was where I didn't know the strategy fairly easily in my opinion, and once you do that It's just a matter of continuing to play to understand the rest. I highly recommended that you also go out and learn it if you similarly revel in getting that ass, it's so satisfying once you do.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon (PlayStation 4, 2020)
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio took a big gamble with Yakuza: Like a Dragon. After seven games (more if you take spinoffs and remakes into consideration) they decided to focus on a new main character and, even more unexpectedly, they decided to change things up by turning the series into a turn-based JRPG. Their gamble paid off in spades. This is easily in my top 3 favorite Yakuza games.
The JRPG gameplay is surprisingly solid. There's definite room for improvement, but they nailed a bunch of it right out of the gate. Some mechanics are a little janky and I wish the job system was more fleshed out or just worked more like Final Fantasy V's, but they nailed one of the most important things and made the battles brisk and fun. It's a great foundation, especially for a team that's never attempted anything like this, and it's way more fun than the combat's been in any of the previous Dragon Engine games. I can't wait to see them iterate on it.
Everything else is top fuckin' notch. The music is great, the side content is fully fleshed out in a way it hasn't been since before they switched to the Dragon Engine, and I love the characters and story so much. Yakuza has a new main character in Ichiban Kasuga, and he's my son and I love him. Kiryu was great, and I love him too, but he was a bit of a passive protagonist. Stuff happened around him and he mostly just stoically reacted to it. Ichi is a much more active lead and it's great. He's a big lovable dope, and his tendency to keep an upbeat attitude and eagerness to leap into action is such a breath of fresh air. And it's not only Ichiban, since this is an RPG you have a whole party of characters and they're all great! Having them with you at all times bantering with each other and reacting to things is another great change of narrative pace, too.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon just straight up rules. As someone who has historically not been too much of a fan of the Dragon Engine games, it's simultaneously a refreshing new take on the series and a fantastic return to form. I can't wait for what comes next. Wherever Ichiban goes, I go.

Moon: Remix RPG Adventure (Nintendo Switch, 2020)
After 23 years of Japanese PS1 exclusivity, Moon: Remix RPG Adventure finally got an English release this year for Nintendo Switch. I'm glad it did, because Moon isn't just the very definition of A Sebmal Game. It's the Sebmal Game missing link. In addition to being just a great video game, it helped me make a mental throughline for a bunch of games I love and a large part of my taste in video games.
To keep a long story short (seriously, I have a much much longer version of this saved in my drafts that I'll maybe finish someday), Moon turned out to be not the JRPG I assumed it was, given the title and basic story pitch, but a secret prequel to a game I love named Chulip. Moon's developer, Love-de-Lic, was formed by a handful of ex-Squaresoft employees, many of which worked on an extremely formative game I love named Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Love-de-Lic broke up in the year 2000 and its staff went on to form a bunch of different studios that ended up making a BUNCH of different games I love like Chibi-Robo, Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, Dandy Dungeon, and the aforementioned Chulip. These games, when you make the connection and line them up, all have a very distinct weirdness in common that makes perfect sense once you've realized many of the same people worked on them. Figuring this all out felt like snapping a piece of my brain back in place, and it was really crazy to come to understand exactly how much this studio that formed and disbanded decades before I'd even heard of them had impacted my tastes and, hell, my life.
So what is Moon, for those who don't innately understand what I mean by "a secret prequel to Chulip"? Moon is an adventure game where you explore a world with a day/night cycle, learn about that world's inhabitants, and eventually solve their problems. Think of it kind of like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, but if the sidequests were the entirety of the focus with no Groundhog Day time reset mechanic and none of the Zelda stuff like combat and dungeons. You play as a young boy who, after a late night JRPG binge session, is sucked into the world of the game he was just playing. Everything is off from the way it was portrayed while the boy was playing the game, though. The hero he had previously controlled is actually a silent menace, raiding peoples' houses for treasure and slaughtering every innocent animal that crosses his path in an endless quest for EXP. The townspeople seem more concerned with problems in their day-to-day lives than the supposed world threatening crisis outlined in the game's intro. It's up to you as the boy to investigate this world's mysteries, help the townsfolk, mend the damage the hero has done, and eventually restore love to a loveless world.
Speaking of love, I fucking loved Moon. I loved the story, I loved the characters, I loved the music, I loved the way it looks (even though the Switch port is a little crusty in that basic emulator-y kinda way), I loved how constantly bizarre and surprising and funny it was. Like I said earlier, it's the very definition of a game made for me. It was essentially the progenitor of a long line of games made for me, and of games potentially made for me but I don't know yet because I haven't played them due to not understanding Japanese (UFO: A Day in the Life translation next please? Anyone from Onion Games reading this??). For as similar as Moon and Chulip are in their systems and pacing, I think I might actually like Moon better despite it coming earlier? It's not as full force maximum impact absurd as Chulip is, but it is a lot more playable and less obtuse once you get a grip on the time limit mechanic. You don't need a full strategy guide included in the instruction manual for Moon, and you don't need to exchange business cards with every single character to get information vital to finishing the game either.
I truly cannot recommend Moon enough if your taste in games ventures anywhere off the beaten path. Maybe this is a little conceited of me, but I assume if you're reading this article, let alone this far down into it, you relate to my video game opinions at least a little bit? You should play Moon. Everyone reading this sentence should play Moon. Moon: Remix RPG Adventure is my game of the year for the year 2020.
These games were also cool, I just had less to say about them:
Death Stranding (PlayStation 4, 2019): Death Stranding, much like Metal Gear Solid V, was a game I enjoyed for the gameplay and not much else. The story, characters, and writing were a huge disappointment for me, but man if I didn't enjoy lugging those boxes around and setting up my hellish cross-continental goon summer camp lookin' zipline network. Mr. Driller Drill Land (Nintendo Switch, 2020): I am a known Mr. Driller Enjoyer, and I enjoyed this Mr. Driller. Originally released for the Gamecube, Mr. Driller Drill Land is another long-time Japanese exclusive that finally came stateside this year and it's packed with new and novel twists on the Mr. Driller format. It looks super sharp, the music's great (also the credits music is the most impossibly out of place and extra as hell shit in the world and it's hilarious), and it's just a good ass time. The main campaign is pretty damn short, but if you're a post-game content kinda guy it has that and it's all super hard. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 (PlayStation 4, 2020): They finally made another good new Tony Hawk game, and all it took was perfectly remaking two of the best old Tony Hawk games! Plays exactly like you remember it with the added benefit of the best mechanics from up to THUG1, looks great, packed full of content, even has most of the music alongside some mostly crappy new stuff. It's the full package as is, but I do hope they end up adding THPS3 to it eventually. Mad Rat Dead (Nintendo Switch, 2020): Mad Rat Dead was a pleasant surprise that I only picked up because I saw a couple of people on my Twitter timeline constantly talking about it. A fun and inventive platformer where all your actions need to be on beat with the music. The gameplay feels great (aside from some not so great performance issues on Switch), the soundtrack is fun, and it's got a real good style to it. Demon's Souls (PlayStation 5, 2020): I love Demon's Souls and this is Demon's Souls. It plays exactly the same with some minor quality of life changes. I don't agree with many of the artistic changes, but there's no denying it looks incredible on a technical level. If you want to play Demon's Souls again or for the first time, this is a perfectly valid and fun way to do so. Groove Coaster: Wai Wai Party!!!! (Nintendo Switch, 2019): Groove Coaster is one of my favorite rhythm games, and they finally made an acceptable at-home version with Wai Wai Party. It's not a perfect replication of the arcade game control-wise, I have some issues with the song choices, and the pricing is frankly fucking ridiculous if you're not a Groove Coaster maniac like I am, but the same ultra satisfying gameplay is all there. You can even play it vertically in handheld mode! Flip Griiiiiiiip!
And we're done! Phew! Honestly didn't realize I played that many good games until I typed all this out. Thanks as always for reading this far. I'm gonna try and get back to regularly posting Breviews this year at the very least. Honestly don't know if I'll get anything else up on here, but we'll see. Here's to hoping 2021 is a little bit less of a nightmare!

Johnny has decided that he loathes high-society charity parties. The only reason he ever goes to them is because he’s an awesome younger brother and he wants to support his older sister.
It’s totally not because she’s completely intimidating and he’s a little bit afraid of her when she’s pissed because she makes him do things like cleaning the hangar bay with a toothbrush, just because he played an amazingly hilarious prank on Ben that left a huge mess, and she didn’t think it was funny. It’s not his fault that Sue has zero sense of humor. It’s just a curse he has to bear.
Sue’s been going through this big philanthropy kick these days, so Johnny’s had to attend so many of these parties, and he hates every second of being at them. He wonders if making him go to these things is maybe her way of paying him back for being a pain in her ass, but no. Sue would never stoop so low. He thinks.
He supposes Sue’s obsession with these charities probably has something more to do with the fact that the FF are all famous and rich now, and what you do when you’re rich and powerful and famous is use all of that influence to help other people. He’s glad Sue’s into this, he really is, especially since it means he doesn’t have to be.
All he has to do is go where she tells him and smile when she says to and look pretty for the cameras. Which he’s very good at.
When Sue told him that this party was a themed costume party — pirates, specifically — Johnny’d cheered. At least that was fun. He spent a month working with one of the most famous designers in New York on making the sexiest pirate costume anyone’s ever seen.
He thinks he was pretty successful, judging by the angry shade of red Sue’s face had turned when she saw his amazingly sexy outfit and the way Reed and Ben had face-palmed and then spent most of the trip over here looking like they really wanted to gouge their own eyes out.
He knows they all still think of him as being somewhere around five years old, but he is nineteen years old and everyone who isn’t Ben, Reed, and Sue thinks he’s totally hot.
What, like their costumes are any better. Ben’s dressed like Blackbeard, of course, because he really is the historical Blackbeard (Johnny’s sure that’s all he’s going to be talking about all night, so he’s already made plans to steer clear), Reed’s wearing a lot of frills and lace and Johnny thinks that’s a feather, and it’s just not cool at all, even though he does look unfairly good in it, and Sue’s dressed like someone named Anne…something.
She could’ve dressed up like a pirate wench with tons of cleavage, but no. She is dressed like a dude.
This is why Johnny has to bear the burden of being the hottest person in the family alone. Sue could be hot if she tried, but she really doesn’t try.
Sue’s still mad that she didn’t get to go back in time and meet real pirates like the rest of them. Johnny can tell. The fact that she’s still mad is probably why she made this party pirate-themed in the first place. It’s been four years, and she should get over it, Johnny thinks.
Johnny pops another caviar-covered cracker into his mouth, and then he makes a face. God, he hates caviar. It’s so slimy.
Why can’t they ever have, like, mini-hot dogs or burgers at these things? He’ll have to suggest that to Sue for next time.
His eyes wander through the crowd, and then he sighs, disappointed. Everyone here must be over forty. They’re so old. And none of them are hot.
This is why he hates these parties.
He perks up, however, when he spots that editor, J. Jonah Jameson, who is old and wrinkly and so not hot, but he is accompanied by a brunet photographer who most definitely is young, smoking, and just Johnny’s type. His back is toward Johnny so he can’t really see his face, but what he sees is great.
The photographer is wearing pantaloons, a bandana on his head, and a green vest with nothing underneath, and it’s a good look, Johnny decides, especially when the guy turns around, because, man, oh man, his abs are amazing.
Johnny promises himself that he’s gonna put his mouth on those before the night is through. He has a goal, and he is determined.
His eyes flick up to the guy’s face, and he winces. Aw, crap. That’s Peter Parker, that nerd Johnny’s ex-girlfriend Dorrie always used to go on about (“he’s so smart and responsible and better than you in every way imaginable,” is what Dorrie’s snide comments had typically amounted to), and who Johnny has understandably come to hate.
Who the hell knew that he was built like that under those awful sweater vests? Or that his face was actually not terrible underneath those very unflattering glasses and that gross haircut?
He’s filled out in the shoulders since Johnny saw him last, which was probably about a year ago. Johnny hired Peter to follow him around and take photos of him, and it’d ended badly, to say the least. Johnny had gone bald after he got frozen during a fight with Doom and that jackass Spider-Man had chipped all of Johnny’s hair off, and Johnny hadn’t been able to show his face in public for a month.
Spider-Man probably loved the whole thing, that jerk.
Johnny kind of doesn’t want to go talk to Peter because he knows it’ll be awkward given that Peter’s, like, his former employee, but also there’s no one else to flirt with, so he might as well give it a shot.
He weaves through the crowd and taps Peter on one of his nice, broad, muscly shoulders. Peter’s busy taking pictures of the crowd, which means he’s probably working or something, and he’ll probably be glad that Johnny’s brightening his day.
Peter’s eyes widen when he sees Johnny’s standing there, and then they narrow. Well, that’s not a good sign, but Johnny is nothing if not determined.
“Hey,” Johnny says, flashing his most charming smile at Peter, the one that makes all the girls and guys go weak in the knees, guaranteed, “what brings you here?”
Peter’s knees disappointingly do not go weak. “I’m working, Torch,” he says flatly. “Go bug someone else.”
Johnny would, but there’s no one else worth bugging. “Geez,” he says. “What’s got you so upset?”
Peter looks at Johnny as though he can’t quite believe him. “You never paid me for those photos I took of you.”
“Didn’t I?” Johnny says. “My bad. Send me the bill.”
“I did. You didn’t pay it.”
“Oh,” Johnny says. “I don’t really check my mail. Send it to my sister. She’ll pay it. She’s all…” He waves his hand around. “…responsible, and stuff.”
“All right,” Peter says, and then he mumbles something about how he could really use the cash.
Peter goes back to snapping pictures like the conversation is over, and he seems surprised when he realizes that Johnny’s still standing there. “Uh,” he says. “Was there something else?”
“Yeah, now that you mention it.” He might as well go for it, he supposes. He holds out a hand and says, “Wanna dance?”
Peter’s eyes narrow at the hand Johnny’s stretching out. He gestures toward the camera he is holding in his hands. “I’m working, Torch. For people who actually pay me at the end of the night.”
Johnny rolls his eyes. “I’m gonna pay you. It’s not like I can’t afford it.” He wiggles his hand at Peter. “C’mon. You must get breaks or something.”
“I just got here. So no, not yet.”
Johnny rolls his eyes. “Well, when do you get a break, and will you dance with me then?”
Peter glances over at Johnny as though he’s trying hard to figure something out. “Why are you so interested in dancing with me?”
“Well,” Johnny says, “in case you haven’t noticed, everyone else here is like eighty.”
“Ah,” Peter says, like it’s all making sense now, “so you’re desperate and I’m literally the only option you have. Figures.”
“It’s not like that,” Johnny says, scowling. “You…look better than I remember you looking.”
Peter shoots him a wry look. “Was that supposed to be a compliment?”
“You have abs,” Johnny says. “They’re nice. And the new haircut is an improvement. And I’m glad you lost those glasses. You look…not terrible.”
Peter looks amused. “Are you saying you actually think I’m hot?”
“I’m saying I don’t think you’re…not hot.”
Peter snorts. “Oh, wow. I’m so flattered.”
Johnny rolls his eyes. “Fine!” he says grumpily. “You’re totally hot, and will you dance with me?”
Peter looks at Johnny as though he can’t quite believe Johnny just said that. “You really mean that, don’t you?”
“I told you your abs were nice,” Johnny shrugs. “What did you think I meant?”
“I don’t…know?”
“You should consider never wearing a shirt again,” Johnny says. “You’ve got the abs, might as well show them off.”
“I don’t think that’s practical, Torch.”
“It’s good fashion advice.”
Peter’s eyes flick down. “Says the man in striped hot pants.”
“I look hot,” Johnny sniffs. “Admit it.”
Peter doesn’t say anything.
“Ha!” Johnny crows. “You do think I look hot!”
“Your abs are…nice,” Peter says, and Johnny’s pretty sure he’s trying not to smile.
“I know,” Johnny says, preening. “So does this mean you’ll dance with me?”
“Yeah, fine. Just. Don’t let my boss see us, yeah?”
Johnny tries not to smile too gleefully as Peter takes his hand and leads him toward the dance floor.
This is turning out to be a better night than he thought it’d be.

Blessed Be the Fruit: Six-week abortion bills are sweeping the nation
Tumblr media
Under his eye. (Photo credit Jacquelyn Martin/AP)
Back in March, I brought up a (then) brand-new law in Kentucky that essentially outlaws abortion. Technically, it only bans abortion after a heartbeat can be detected, but since that can happen as early as six weeks — before many women even know they’re pregnant — it’s basically a not-even-that-sneaky attempt to ban all abortions. Except it’s not even that. It’s an attempt to get their law in front of the Supreme Court to create an opportunity for our newly conservatized court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Kentucky was the first to get their bill over the line, but they’re far from the only contenders. Three more have been signed — among them Georgia’s truly repugnant bill, which was signed just this week — and six more are currently sitting in various stages in their respective legislatures, most of them openly declaring an intent to make it to the Supreme Court, consequences and expenses to the taxpayers be damned.
(A note on terminology: These bills are made all the most absurd by the fact that a fetus doesn’t even actually have a heart at six weeks’ gestation, as pointed out by Dr. Jen Gunter. But I guess “fetal pole tissue activity bill” doesn’t have the same ring to it. I’ll be using the term “six-week ban,” because I don’t like reinforcing inaccurate, intentionally inflammatory terminology.)
It’s important to note that even after these laws “officially” take effect, they won’t be able to actually take effect because they are, to a one, unconstitutional AF. (But again, that’s the whole point.) It’s less important to note that 56 percent of the U.S. public opposes the bans once they know what the bans really mean, and 65 percent of the public don’t want the court to overturn Roe. Why is that less important? Because the public doesn’t get an opinion on this one — it’s not in Brett Kavanaugh’s hands yet, but it will be before long.
Signed
Georgia
Just on Tuesday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed HB 481 — the Living Infants Fairness and Equality Act, see, it spells a word! It’s so clever! — which prevents women from getting an abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected. The law does include exceptions for a documented medical emergency or for rape or incest — in which case you have to file a police report before they’ll let you get an abortion.
But wait, there’s more. The Georgia law also declares that “unborn children are a class of living, distinct person” that deserves “full legal recognition” — meaning that, no shit, fetuses have to be included in “population based determinations.”
Unlike many abortion laws that apply to abortion providers but not pregnant women, this law does criminalize women who get abortions. If they get an abortion from a provider, they’re a party to murder, punishable by life in prison. (If you travel out of state, or help someone else leave the state, for an abortion, that’s conspiracy to commit murder, 10 years.) If she miscarries because of her own conduct (like using drugs while pregnant), that’s second-degree murder, punishable by 10 to 30 years in prison. (So pregnant women in Georgia, look forward to an interrogation about that sushi you ate that one time if you should ever experience the tragedy of a miscarriage.) And if she terminates her own pregnancy, that’s murder, subject to life imprisonment or death.
The law will go into effect January 1, 2020, although Roe v. Wade will prevent the state from actually prosecute women — for as long as Roe remains precedent, at least.
Ohio
At long last, Ohio has finally managed to get a six-week ban passed! (Fifth time’s the charm.) In April, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed SB 23, the Human Rights Protection Act (which doesn’t spell anything clever. Come on, Ohio, you’ve had eight years to work on this). The new law, of course, bans abortions as soon as a heartbeat can be detected, making it a fifth-degree felony with up to a year in prison for any doctor who performs one. The legislation also lets the State Medical Board take disciplinary action against doctors, with penalties of up to $20,000. It was known as the country’s most punitive such bill until Georgia said, “Hold my beer.”
Is this another bill designed for the sole purpose of causing a Supreme Court challenge, though? No way!
Just kidding. “Will there be a lawsuit? Yeah, we are counting on it. We’re counting on it. We’re excited about it.” Well, I’m glad you’re getting such a thrill from violating a woman’s right to bodily autonomy, state Rep. Ron Hood.
The new law is scheduled to take effect 90 days after signing — which will be July 10 — unless, of course, it’s blocked by a federal judge.
Mississippi
In March, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed their own six-week ban, SB 2116, also prohibiting abortion as early as six weeks in lest a doctor lose their Mississippi medical license. (It does include an exception for the life or health of the mother, although the legislature rejected efforts to allow an exception for rape or incest.) In a statement at the signing ceremony, Bryant said, "I can remember the exciting moments both with my children and grandchildren when the first sonograms were taken and that heartbeat could be heard,” because some dude’s happy sonogram memory should definitely dictate what women are allowed to do with their own bodies.
Mississippi’s last attempt at an abortion bill passed last year — a ban after 15 weeks, which was, at the time, one of the most restrictive laws in the country. (Ah, simpler times.) It was blocked by a federal judge who found it to “unequivocally” violate women’s constitutional rights. I’m sure they have great hopes for this one, though. (Although it’s facing legal challenges, it remains as yet unblocked.)
(Fun fact: Did you know that Mississippi has the highest infant mortality rate in the country? I wonder if any of those babies would have appreciated the funding the state is prepared to dump into defending this openly unconstitutional law.)
Kentucky
Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin got to signing SB 9 with a quickness — not only did he sign the bill into law around midnight the day after it passed the Senate in March, he also signed an “emergency” declaration to make it take effect immediately. The ACLU of Kentucky filed almost immediately to stop it from going into effect, and then U.S. District Judge David Hale awarded them a temporary stay almost immediately on the grounds that come on, y’all, please don’t pretend to be as stupid as you’re pretending to be. Or something like that. I’m paraphrasing.
EMW Women’s Surgical Center, the only remaining clinic in Kentucky that performs abortions, had to turn patients away the day the bill was signed. They were able to reopen again when the stay was ordered — for as long as it lasts, anyway.
In Progress
Louisiana
Louisiana’s SB 184 passed through the state Senate just this week and is headed over to the House for consideration. The bill prohibits a person from performing an abortion after a heartbeat is detected under penalty of a fine up to $1,000, up to two years in jail, and revocation of their medical license. It includes an exception for the woman’s life or health but not for rape or incest — the Senate committee original approved such an exception, but then a representative from Louisiana Right to Life convinced them to leave it out, because it would show respect for a life after it’s born, which we don’t do in Louisiana, merci beaucoup.
This law actually has a trigger clause that it will only go into effect if Mississippi’s law passes its own legal challenges. That way, Louisiana doesn’t have to pay for a legal battle it know it won’t be able to win. There’s using your noodle, Louisiana.
Alabama
Alabama HB 314 would make abortion — all abortion — a Class A felony, carrying a maximum sentence of 99 years in prison, and attempted abortion a Class C felony, with up to 10 years. It passed in the House 74-3, with all of the Republicans voting in favor (save for two who didn’t vote at all), and nearly all the Democrats walking out of the House chamber rather than vote.
As in other states, bill sponsor Rep. Terri Collins was very open about the fact that her goal with this bill is a Supreme Court challenge — that’s why it doesn’t include an exception for rape or incest (despite a proposed amendment to include such an exemption). She says the bill will provide “a vehicle to revisit the constitutionally flawed Roe v. Wade decision.”
The bill will move to the state Senate sometime next week, and while it’s not completely certain that it’ll pass, a companion bill (SB 211) was introduced last month, so chances aren’t bad. I mean, “not bad” in the sense that it’s not unlikely to pass, not “not bad” in the sense that it wouldn’t be very, very bad for anyone who might get pregnant.
South Carolina
South Carolina’s H 3020 would make it illegal to receive an abortion in South Carolina after a heartbeat is detected. Unlike most other six-week bans currently under discussion, South Carolina’s bill includes an exception for rape or incest as well as for the life of the mother, although it was only added after a bit of a fight.
The bill isn’t likely to become law this year, since the legislative session is over, but: The South Carolina legislative session is actually two years, meaning this bill could come back up when the General Assembly reconvenes in 2020. So while the bill hasn’t totally passed, we can’t really put it down as a fail either. (More’s the pity.) And it’s not promising that this is the first time this proposal has ever made it this far — attempts in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2018 never made it to the floor, but this one appears to be a winner.
Missouri
In February, the House of Representatives in Missouri — which has exactly one abortion provider left — passed HB 126, which bans… like, everything. It started out just banning abortion after the detection of a heartbeat, making it a felony, but then it got loaded up like a party bus on prom night. As passed, the bill also bans abortion on the basis of race, sex, or indication of Down syndrome; requires both custodial parents to be informed if a minor tries to get an abortion; and requires Missouri residents who are getting an abortion out of state to receive the same informed consent booklet they would if they were getting their abortion in Missouri. It also includes a trigger clause that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, abortion is banned entirely in Missouri. And it bans abortion at eight, 14, 18, or 20 weeks, whichever ends up being deemed constitutional. (The bill includes an exception for the life or health of the mother but not for rape or incest.)
So just to be clear: This bill bans abortion after the detection of a heartbeat or on the basis of a whole bunch of things that can’t be detected at six weeks. And it requires out-of-state abortion providers to have Missouri informed consent materials, and it bans abortion after… basically whatever they can get away with. Missouri, you definitely win the award for most dadaist abortion bill.
The bill — called the “Missouri Stands for the Unborn” Act — is currently sitting in the state Senate, so we’ll see where it goes from there.
West Virginia
West By-God Virginia’s HB 2915 was introduced in February to ban abortion after a heartbeat is detected, except in the case of danger to the mother’s life or health, rape or incest, incomplete miscarriage, or fetal incompatibility with life — making it probably the most permissive of the current crop of six-week bills, which, of course, isn’t saying much. It also includes regulations as to what can be done with fetal tissue. The bill, which happens to have been co-sponsored by Speaker of the House Roger Hanshaw, was still sitting in committee when the legislative session closed in March.
Incidentally, last November, West Virginia voters approved an amendment to remove the right to abortion from the West Virginia constitution. During that debate, abortion-rights proponents argued that the amendment would open the door to other abortion restrictions. What a bunch of sillys, right?
Minnesota
In January, HF 271 (and its companion bill SF 869) were introduced to the Minnesota State Legislature. It was referred to the Health and Human Services Policy committee, and there it appears to be hanging out, for the time being. These bills are identical to HF 4524 and SF 4109, which failed to pass in 2018, so here’s hoping for a repeat of that.
FAIL
Florida
Companion bills HB 235 and SB 792 would have made it a third-degree felony for a doctor to perform an abortion after a heartbeat is detected, with an exception for the life or health of the mother. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had pledged to sign such legislation if it passed, which it didn’t.
Maryland
In February, HB 933 and HB 978 (the “Keep Our Hearts Beating” Act, like, seriously) were filed with the Maryland House of Delegates, but neither made it out of committee. Also in February, a bill that would enshrine a woman’s right to abortion in the state constitution was withdrawn because the Senate president didn’t want to move it forward this year. Maybe next year, Maryland.
Texas
The Texas House of Representatives held a public hearing in April to discuss HB 896, a law that would criminalize all abortion with no exception, and make it possible for women who get abortions to be convicted of homicide. Since Texas is easily the death-penaltiest state in the country, that means a woman could be executed for getting an abortion — even if her own life was in danger. Rep. Tony Tinderholt said the bill is necessary to make women “more personally responsible.”
The law, thankfully, was blocked in committee when Rep. Jeff Leach refused to advance it to the floor. The local sheriff’s department is currently looking into multiple threats to his life. Because, life! We care about it!
Tennessee
Tennessee’s HB 77 (companion bill to SB 1236) passed out of the state House in February by a vote of 66-21, but it failed in the state Senate Judiciary Committee because it is, as Lt. Gov. Randy McNally says, “constitutionally suspect.” (Not that “constitutionally suspect” is basically a defining feature of all these bills.) But the state House and Senate appear divided over whether they want to focus on a six-week bill or a trigger bill, and now they’re engaged in a zany comedy of errors. Don’t hold your breath, though — the six-week bill has been sent to “summer study,” so we’ll probably be seeing it again next session. Then again, Sen. Mark Pody has submitted a letter requesting that the bill be brought to the floor now, so who knows what might happen? It’s definitely not in any way a clusterfuck.
Iowa
Iowa’s six-week ban was signed into law in May of 2018 but never took effect because, of course, it violates the state constitution. The Polk County District Court deemed it “violative of both the due process and equal protection provisions of the Iowa Constitution as not being narrowly tailored to serve the compelling state interest of promoting potential life.” Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said she thinks the court got it wrong but that she sees “no path to successfully appeal the district court’s decisions or to get this lawsuit before the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Oh, come on, Kim, don’t get all discouraged like that! That kind of thing isn’t stopping any of the other states.

MONTHLY MEDIA: June 2018
Oh what a month! The sun is shining, the bees are buzzing, and I’m inside watching Netflix like a chump.
……….FILM……….
Tumblr media
Mothra (1961)
I want to check out more of the classic Kaiju movies and felt like as good a place as any to begin. Some stuff hasn’t aged super well but the miniatures are fun and the humans that anchor the movie really succeeded at being the heart of the movie.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
The Bachelorette (Episode 14.01 to 14.04)
You know I’m pleasantly surprised by Becca as the lead. She has a lot of personality and charm and isn’t overly polished/reserved in front of the camera. The fact that we didn’t see any of this last season shows just how bland Arie was. Also I’m hoping she ends up with Blake.
The Toys the Made Us (Episode 2.01 to 2.04)
Great second season. I appreciate that these episodes explore more international influences on the North American toy industry (LEGO, Hello Kitty, etc.) It’s a subtle look at how different cultures approach business, play, and how children factor into it all.
Black Mirror (Episode 3.05 to 3.06)
It really took a while for us to come back to the series (I think consuming bleak television is harder when the world around you is all too similar) but I’ll say that the last episode in this season was fantastic. I really appreciate the exploration of an existing genre like a police procedural with the addition of speculative fiction. I really hope season 4 pushes further into other worlds.
Ultraman (Episode 1.01 to 1.03)
Trying to get a little more Kaiju goodness into the month so I figured I’d try the show out. It’s aged surprisingly well for a monster series with a 1960s tv budget. Though I may just be partial to miniatures.
Tumblr media
Nailed It! (Episode 1.01 to 1.05)
Solid family viewing and I admit I didn’t like it the first time I watched it. After watching two episodes alone, I couldn’t get into seeing 3 poor people try to do in an hour what a professional likely completed in three. But in a rewatch with family, I realized it was more about the journey and everyone embracing how crazy it is to try to replicate these super intricate desserts.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Episode 5.19 to 5.22)
We couldn’t bear to finish the season until we knew it was getting picked up again and THANK GOODNESS! That finale was great but it would’ve been way too sad if that was it. This show is too good to not exist and I’m glad NBC could see what a treasure it is.
Riverdale (Episode 2.21 to 2.22)
And so another season concludes! The finale wasn’t quite as dramatic but hot damn was I stoked to discover who the Black Hood really was. Great twist and just as silly as I’d hoped. Oh but even sillier was the board meeting of super-villains that happened at the very end. Ugh this show is too good.
One-Punch Man (Episode 1.01 to 1.04)
This is as far as I’ve read in the manga and it’s been a faithful adaptation so far. The show does a great job of capturing the ennui of the comic and adds another layer of humour through sound/voice acting/animation-based gags.
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin
(Complete)
I have a newfound love of short, concise fantasy! The book is just over 200 pages and covers so much! With that said, this didn’t really connect. The lead character is unlikeable in the first half and then dull in the second. It’s well-written and a super interesting world but it’s just a little too serious for me.
Tumblr media
Beauty by Kerascoet & Hubert
Just getting started in this reread and hot dang do I love this comic. The artwork is deceptively simple but this is 100% a mature-readers book. A peasant getting the “gift” of the greatest beauty leads to a lot of social commentary on the toxic nature of objectifying and idolizing physical appearance. So good.
Delicious in Dungeon Vol. 2 by Ryōko Kui
(Complete)
This continues to be one of my all time favourite comics. This second volume gets even more creative with each chapter’s “recipe” and its use of monsters and lore are very cool. The character development is strong and there’s a logic to the progress and I really can’t say enough good things about the series.
……….AUDIO……….
Tumblr media
Remain In Light by Talking Heads (1980)
I was listening to an ep of The Ongoing History of New Music and that lead me down a real rabbit hole. So good! I mean I don’t think I really appreciated how Talking Heads approached their sound or how evergreen it really is.
Shawn Mendes by Shawn Mendes (2018)
What a good good Canadian pop boy.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (Inti Creates)
This game is better than it ought to be. It was only $10, it was a stretch goal from a Kickstarter project, and it’s clearly a Castlevania knock-off...and it’s a lot of fun! It’s short but offers a lot of replay and the mechanics are simple enough to get the hang of. The boss designs are a little jarring against the gothic setting, but it’s a lot of fun to play.
Fortnite Battle Royale (Epic Games)
I really wanted to like this game but in playing by myself, I would rank better (2nd or 3rd) by hiding than by trying to actually do anything (like engage the other players, try to find weapons, etc.) If that’s what the game’s format rewards then it’s not a game for me.
Tumblr media
Dungeons & Dragons Hexcrawl Campaign (Wizards of the Coast)
The party knows they’re about to confront a dragon; they’ve taken a sacred artifact from the temple of dragons AND they’ve been warned. So clearly this leads to an entire session doing everything possible to avoid leaving the dungeon and confronting said dragon. Lesson learned: make the enemy more proactive.
And that’s it! As always, send me any good suggestions you might have for things to read/watch/hear/and play.
Happy Saturday!

Ikemen Sengoku Part 1 - Oda Nobunaga Route
Tumblr media
Yess it is out! Lolol, basic story is the heroine gets taken back to the Sengoku period when Oda Nobunaga is betrayed and supposed to die but she ends up saving him from the fire instead. (BTW, yes I play my games very late at night lmaoo)
Lol when she said she doesn’t want to know what his name is. The heroine seems pretty cool. Ohh I’m not well versed with Japanese history but I was aware of Mitsuhide’s betrayal, I just didn’t realise it only lasted for 3 days before Hideyoshi came back and took back control, I see, I see. And the post grad physics guy that came to the past with her actually was stuck here for four years before the time she came in. What a convenient time and location for her to pop up in to change a big part of history! I still find it hilarious that Nobunaga asked if she would rule by his side LOL. What a wonderful suggestion. And she replied by running off hahaha, he got rejected lol.
I see, Sasuke also came and changed Kenshin and Shingen’s lives when they were supposed to be dead by this time already. I guess this makes everything more flexible story wise then! An alternate history! I feel so sorry for the heroine though… She could have relied on that physics guy turned ninja but then Hideyoshi and Masamune found her and now she’s back to Nobunaga aiyaa. Sasuke’s right, love clouds your decision making skills. Unfortunately, this is an otome and I’m going to be choosing a route so Sasuke’s warning of telling the heroine to not fall in love with anyone here ain’t gonna happen. Guess we’ll just have to hopefully pick one that’s worth staying in this timeline for lolol. Lmao, the heroine is such a hard worker, she refuses to be a bum for 3 months (before she can return home to the real world through a wormhole) even though Nobunaga just wants her to be near him as his lucky charm. I would’ve been like sure, I’ll just explore this world for 3 months lmao. It’ll be like a holiday!
Anyway, I hate arrogant men like the Nobunaga in this game and since I like to keep good things for last, I’ll pick him first lolol. At least his character design is pretty, he’s my second favourite in terms of appearances! Masamune has got to be the best looking one kyaa~~ LOL at Hideyoshi saying he’d cut her if she disrespects Nobunaga again, the poor heroine. Omgg, can her situation get any worse? She’s going to war by his side gg. Nice knowing you heroine. Everything she says to him falls on deaf ears lmao.
When the heroine was surprised that Nobunaga protected/saved her from an arrow, I was like why are you shocked?! He better damn well protect you! He took you here and you’re his lucky charm! He can’t be that irresponsible! Although it could be possible I guess… I mean, he is ruthless… I’m surprised the heroine wasn’t aware of what Nobunaga was trying to do by bringing a smaller force with him to destroy the enemy commander’s forces etc… Still must have been traumatising to have to witness this skirmish as a normal person who has never been acquainted with war in any way, even if it is a small skirmish. She does owe him a thank you I guess though lol. LOL that he wants her to warm his bed and lmao, she’s right that she needs to know more about her partner than the simple hobbies of quashing revolts and burning castles 😂😂😂 she’s so right but funny at the same time lol.
Omgg, the heroine knows consent! I find so many otome ignoring the concept of consent all in the name of hot guys and it infuriates me sometimes so I’m glad our heroine this time is very spunky and stands her ground. Hahaha she’s so cute and optimistic about learning how they make kimonos back in this time. But I’m surprised that she told him she’s from the future and he believed it, but I am most impressed with Nobunaga’s bet with Go. Definitely a good idea in getting the heroine haha, he’s adapting to her personality well. I think I might enjoy this route more than I thought. Strip Go is an entertaining game after all 😂😂
HAHAHA, when the heroine was clueless and Ieyasu explained stuff to her because her clueless face was annoying and that she should be quiet and then she said “sorry for breathing” LOL, she is so hilarious, I love her. Poor heroine, she tried to run away from this hot spring trip with Nobunaga but everyone is out to capture her, lolol at Hideyoshi being the one to have packed her belongings for the trip hahaha. I assume Nobunaga was protecting her from that assassin who grabbed her leg, I mean I would assume that if you take on the role of an assassin, you wouldn’t regard your life as important especially when facing someone you believe to be a tyrant and enemy, you’ll never beg for your life from such a person. I love how they resolved their differences and they talked to each other of their worldly views and then he ended up snuggling up using her lap as a pillow and then tucking her into a futon with him later when she fell asleep 😂😂 he’s so good at this lmao.
I’m really enjoying this story. You can see why Nobunaga and the heroine come into conflicts a lot of the time when it comes to human life since he’s stuck in a time filled with killing as a normal circumstance whereas she hasn’t. It’s not that he particularly likes to kill but he understands that he needs to do so in order for his goal of unity across the lands to be achieved and he can’t allow any betrayal and treachery to even possibly occur. There is no mercy for anyone because once you show it, then people will know your weaknesses. It’s a sad world to live in..
I’m glad the heroine is such a cool girl, she got Kennyo to let his guard down so she could bite him and then run and she is aware that Nobunaga may not be a good person but she knows in her heart that she doesn’t want him to die and I think that’s enough resolve to wanting to save him. Omg, when he said she lost the game by default and so he can claim a part of her and he chooses her heart, I literally swooned! Gotta admit though, the heroine was so cool when she saved Nobunaga and threw the smoke bomb and spikes on the he ground to delay the enemies, she’s smart, witty, emotive and loving. I like her just as much as Nobunaga hahaha.
When Nobunaga started talking about his past and the heroine felt terrible that this period in time forced him into having to take measures such as killing his own brother to survive, it made me think a little about Soji from Rurouni Kenshin, he was also a kid that had no choice but to do what he had to in order to survive and that’s what set him off on to the path he went on from that day onwards.
The way that they got together was so cute though, I mean it was obvious how attracted they were to each other but seeing how much Nobunaga cared for her and cherished her made me all giddy! Lolol. Especially when he suggested another game of Go for her heart and she told him that everything was his already, that was so great~~
I’m surprised that Sasuke is not planning to leave either because of whatever job he needs to see till the end, I mean, it literally means he’s never going back, he must either have a great sense of responsibility or this duty is something only he can perform and he needs to see it to completion. I wonder how he even got this job though….
I can’t take Nobunaga’s confidence, especially when he’s facing Kenshin, why is he so cool?! Not only is he gentle and reliable, he’s even starting to become even more considerate and understanding that it’s really hard to not see how perfect of a man he is. He’s playful but also serious, sigh, I don’t think the heroine or I really understood what we were getting into when I chose this route, I honestly didn’t think I’d like him this much, I can see why the heroine is willing to stay in this world forever for him, it’s a big sacrifice but you gotta admit, he’s worth it lmao. I just love how they both changed each other for the better (in their perspectives anyway) and as such well balanced individuals each in themselves.
This game is so good lol, it’s so difficult to find a heroine as likeable as the guy these days so I really appreciate the effort they put into her character as well because I love her just as much. They united Japan so fast! Hahaha, well I guess that’s okay too lol since it’s the romantic route, but going around the world does sound very ideal, especially with the charisma of Nobunaga to be coming along hahaha. Anywho, Nobunaga was much more unique, cooler and fun than I thought and I’m starting to think it’ll be hard to best him because the chemistry he and the heroine shares is too great and funny to beat, they’re like made for each other lol!
P.S I don't think I'm as fond of the dramatic route haha, too dramatic for me lolol with the running away from the storm taking her back to the present and him wishing for her to live. And the whole idea of them changing the past too much etc. But it was really cute when he was scared she wouldn't like it if he came back to her full of the blood of the enemies on him so he went to a river to wash himself first, he's so considerate and I guess a bit hurt after she pushed him away when he killed someone and yet could touch her so tenderly. It was the best when Sasuke showed her Nobunaga's everlasting love for her that could be shown in the present with him cherishing that toy bear she made and proclaiming his love for her. He's so cool.
I personally think the romantic route was much better in terms of sweetness and how fun it was~

Meet the Rider of Science, and his power of... Exposition!!! Yeah, it's a full review for Kamen Rider Build episode 1...
NOTE: After long consideration, I've decided to upgrade my First Impression into a full review. This doesn't necessarily mean I'll be doing the same for the following episodes. That part is... still undecided for now. If anything, I might end up doing a batch review for several episodes in each new post. Probably once a month, or at least a bi-weekly (2 episodes) release. Assuming I continue watching, of course! Also, don't expect this to be as thorough/detailed as my recap-view for "Kamen Rider Ghost". To be honest, that ended up being a bit taxing to produce... LOL. For this one in particular, I've already offered some points before, so I'm just going to expand on those. Let's start!
- Like I've pointed out before, the Pandora's Box mystery is intriguing. Sure, it's basically another plot-generating macguffin, but what is it really? Of course, after a few days, I've realized one thing: TOEI seems to have a thing with cubes lately! Remember "Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger"? And also that recent 'odd' anime series, "Sekaisuru KADO". I'm so glad "Uchu Sentai Kyuranger" has the... balls to be different. LOL. - The interesting part about this item though, is that it gave clear confirmation to the series' time setting. Much like Kyuranger, this show is being set in the future, albeit not as distant as that current Super Hero Time counterpart (after all, Kyuranger takes place more than 300 years after humanity's first space exploration). This first episode began around 10 years after the elusive Box was discovered. And that occured during humanity's first landing on Mars! - As for the "Romance of Three Kingdom" angle I said before? That's due to what the Box created: the "Skywall Disaster". When the macguffin was triggered during the Martian Exploration's homecoming ceremony, it unleashed a mysterious impenetrable Skywall that divided Japan into... yes, THREE areas. Namely, Hokuto (blue, the social welfare), Seito red, the economic recovery), and Touto (green, the traditional pacifist). The last is where this series is set (for now, at least). We have three confirmed Kamen Riders as well, so I'm guessing they will represent the Rulers/Leaders for each area. Not unlike Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and Sun Quan, right? - Oh, one more thing... that mysterious worker who conveniently activated the Box and instigated the tragedy? I could be wrong, but I think it's quite obvious enough that he's none other than our protagonist. His amnesiac state and strange obsession curiosity to the Box that was shown afterwards, strongly supported this theory. - Protagonist Sentou Kiryuu (played by yet another JUNON Super Boy winner Atsuhiro Inukai) is still grating on my nerves. Yes, I HAVE warmed up to him after 3rd viewing (kind of... sort of...), but I'm still having trouble liking this guy. He's what you get if the duo of "Kamen Rider W" had a child together: the cocky side of Shoutarou Hidari, and the naive curiosity of Philip/Raito Sonozaki. Calling himself genius and self-praising his own invention? Yikes! That's Shoutarou's bad-side all right. Also... Spada Spada Spada!!! Sentou's body language reminds me of Kyuranger's Spada. But he's far from being as likeable. For now, that is. - Inspite of that, I do like the questions surrounding his 'forgotten past'. That creepy human-experimentation nightmare? Yeah, it's a strong nod to Shouwa Riders, with "Kamen Rider Black" being a great example. It doesn't take a genius to guess, that it's how he ended up becoming Kamen Rider Build. Introduced via the nightmares, was 'Bat-Man'.... I mean the bat-themed Faust leader Night Rogue. It seems this mysterious figure is pulling the strings behind these experimentations. - Speaking of experiments... Ryuuga Banjou (played by Eiji Akaso) is the recent in its long line of victim. This stupid 23 years old is easily my second favorite character so far. His actor have proven his ability to showcase emotions in "Kamen Rider Amazons S2" (I hated his character at first, but he evolved into a compelling audience-surrogate later on). So he's another strong talent for the protagonist side. He also shared that Shouwa Rider-esque backstory, which comfortably placed him on route to become the 2nd Rider, Kamen Rider Claws. But if, and only if, this show is indeed going through the Sangokuden path, will he end up becoming Sun Quan to Sentou's Liu Bei? Hmmmm.... that would be a heartbreaking twist, considering how heavily he's being shipped with Sentou right now. Then again, don't forget Shadowmoon... - If Ryuuga's second, who's my favorite character then? The answer is of course... Gentoku Himuro (played by Kensei Mikai). Contrary to my First Impression, he's not that ambiguous. He's a sleek-haired corporate-level douchebag, as evidenced by his sleazy move towards the lady journalist. He might look cool and tough, but at several occasions, he's acting like a spoiled brat! That's probably why I liked him even more! LOL. I admit, he's currently present to deliver exposition dump regarding the Pandora's Box. But he also had his own mystery, which means future potentials. Gentoku's one of the three bigwigs who experienced the Skywall disaster first hand. Yet in contrast to his words, he looked okay, and seemingly hasn't aged in 10 years. What's the deal with him then? What about those other two, the lady in white and middle-aged man? Are they the leaders of the two other areas now? Why is the buttons on his gray uniform is on the left, and not right side? If I do end up following this series, getting answers to those will probably be one of the few reasons. - There's more. These past few days, many have been connecting Gentoku with the supposed-antagonist Night Rogue. A nice theory, but a little too obvious one if you ask me. Unless of course, TOEI is going the exact same route to "Kamen Rider Ex-Aid". Which makes sense, since Gentoku shares MANY similarities to Kuroto Dan! Both are played by crowd-pleasing really-good-looking (I can't really argue that, can I... ;D) 30-something actors, both are corporate businessmen who somehow got involved with the protagonist, and they exuded a strong "I'm a villain" vibe from the very start of the show. Two of a kind! But that's also the reason why it's too obvious. I doubt TOEI is going to rehash the same twist so soon. - Personally, I'm currently suspecting his assistant Nariaki Utsumi (played by Yuki Ochi) to be the real face behind Night Rogue. Going back to my Sangokuden theory, there's a likelihood that Gentoku will serve as the show's Cao Cao. But remember, it wasn't Cao Cao who ended up becoming the bigger challenge to Liu Bei. It was Sima Yi, who was his right hand and also personal advisor. I hope you're getting my point here... - Misora Isurugi (played by Kaho Takada) is obviously the official sidekick for Sentou. I sincerely hope we'll see a development in her character soon, because for now, her listless attitude... is sucking the joy out of this series. Think of it, like grumpy Koyomi in "Kamen Rider Wizard". She made me abandoned that series! For some reason, Misora has the power to cleanse evil. That means she might end up becoming a key character later on. That's a story for another day though. She's just part of Sentou's glaring exposition dump now. - Freelance journalist Sawa Takigawa (played by Yukari Taki and Cafe Nascita owner Souichi Isurugi (played by Yasuyuki Maekawa) are also exposition tools! Their main contribution to the episode was to deliver explanations, such as: the unidentified life forms Smash, how Build could extract their Essence to turn them back into human, how Misora could purify the Essence to be used by Build later on, why Sentou ended up living in Nascita's hidden basement/bunker, Build's goals in this series, as well as about Ryuuga's criminal background. Sawa served as the first damsel-in-distress, while Souichi as... Spada, Spada, Spada (that use of Italian? duh...)... a comic relief support. He was NOT funny though. AT ALL. Generally annoying for my taste. - Aaah yes, the flat dry jokes just did NOT work. It's said that third time's the charm, but definitely not for this one. None of the humor made me laugh, not even once. Aside from being weak in materials and relies too much on slapstick, the comedic timing was also off. The optimist in me would say, "Better luck next episode", but the pessimist half is saying, "Cut the crap, and just focus on being serious!!!". - If there's one thing I easily enjoyed about this episode, it's the design and concept. I could be biased due to my love to "Kamen Rider W", but Build certainly emitted Double's flair of style. Likely due to Ryuta Tasaki being the director. The dual-elements is a such a neat concept, combining biological and technological, though it seems these will not be limited to those categories (we'll be getting elementals like Diamonds, Fire, and more). Yes, the whole Full Bottles gimmick is basically an excuse to promote toy collectibles/figures. But at least it allows a variety of combinations, or as the Build Driver say... "BEST MATCH". The fact that it's created using purified Smash's essence (Hedgehog is the example) is equally intriguing. That means every Smash serves a purpose to become a new power-base! What will happen if Build accidentally uses an evil one, then? Will he turn evil too? Hmmm... - Build's transformation scene feels very SCIENCEy with all those physics equations. All those metallurgy angle... I really dig that! Sadly, the finishing move "VOLTECH FINISH" is a complete opposite. It's meant to look cool, but for me it's cheesy because the use of Physics felt unnatural/forced. Really, I don't think it's possible for anyone to move that way. To sum up, the Science approach in this episode was a hit or miss for me. - Last but not least, the nicely choreographed action, helped elevate the episode's second half into something that was genuinely entertaining. The motorcycle chase against the Touto armed forces in particular, was a highlight. It's over the top, but exciting. Like many had said, it felt like a Kamen Rider show once again.
As far as first episode go, this was... okay to good. Not great, due to many reasons I've pointed out above. Unlike Kyuranger that instantly stole my attention and sped off with it, this one didn't accomplish as much. It's clearly handholding its audience with thorough explanations here and there, so the bulk of it was merely expositions. Just to be fair, it can't really be helped nor blamed, considering this IS only the first episode. I do however, hope things will 'build up' with more... 'natural' flow in the next one. That's probably when I can properly decide whether to pick this series up or not. So yeah, allow me to reiterate: this post does NOT mean I'll be following the series from now on. There are some nitpick-ish parts I still need to... 'shake off' first, but I do have some good enough reasons to give it a chance, at least until around the 5th-6th episode. Here's hoping the next ones will be able to convince me even more... Next Episode: Is Ryuuga a real killer? Time for a murder investigation...
Episode 01 Score: 7,3 out of 10

Hidden Gems Book Box: January Box
Okay, so if you don’t know what a book subscription box then;
Where have you been?
Check out my blog post about them HERE.
Hidden Gems is a new subscription service that is different in a very awesome way.  Almost all YA book subscription services release new YA books, but not Hidden Gems.  Hidden Gems focuses on YA books published within the last five years that maybe didn’t get the attention or recognition they deserved and brings them back around for readers to discover.  I love this idea, while I am a control freak and like to guess what book I’m getting before ordering a box I find Hidden Gems to be affordable enough to put that anxiety and control aside and just settle in for the ride.  Anyway, I’ll get more into what I like about this box at the end – lets get on with the unboxing! (I apologise for the quality of the photos and lack of good focus.)
For starters I’m kind of sad that the box didn’t have more detailing AND that I couldn’t include a photo of it because it had my address but it was super sturdy and a nice large box! I like how everything was packaged into this small little package but it did leave a lot of empty room in the box.  I can see why they’ve done this but it did make the box seem a bit unwarranted.  I think it’s cool that they’ve written the genre’s on the paper so you immediately get an idea of what to expect.
First ‘item’ we have is this little plastic baggy filled with merch related to the book.  So it isn’t really a surprise what the book is but since they aren’t new release books or by well known authors so even though you can easily figure the book out you still don’t know anything about it.
The obvious first thing is these bookmarks – one for the first book in the series and then two others to complete the trilogy.  I like these, they may not be fancy art ones or anything but they’re actual book promotion related stuff so that’s also cool.
Then we’ve got this little phoenix pin.  I don’t really care one way or another for it but it fits with the book.
We’ve also got this little charm which features the first sequel’s cover.  It’s good quality but I don’t really have a use for it.  Though I am thinking of making a bookish charm bracelet to feature some of the bookish charms like stuff I’ve been receiving so maybe it’ll come into use that way.
I beleive that only myself and one other received this small little promotion baggie since we won the pre-orders lucky dip kind of thing.  While that is disappointing that this promotion stuff wouldn’t be included each month it is cool that I won the goodies!
I’m glad they (as a new book subscription service) were able to include something like this; a letter from the author of the featured book.
“Dear Reader,
The Into the Fire trilogy is one that has a special place in my heart because the idea actually came to me in middle school.  Yes, middle school.  My mother used to watch reruns of the 1970’s TV show Dark Shadows, and since I’ve had a love of all things paranormal practicality since birth, I enjoyed the show- bad special effects and all. There was a phoenix on Dark Shadows names Laura.  Her last name changed depending on which life she was on, but she was in fact a woman who burst into flames and was reborn.  I remember watching her burn and thinking the idea of a person being a phoenix was the coolest thing ever. Fast-Forward many years.  We don’t get into how many exactly. ;) It was summertime and I thought about Laura and how her death and rebirth stuck with me.  I knew I had to write about a cast of characters who could be reborn.  Cara and the other phoenixes emerged from there. So this trilogy is the idea that stuck with me, waiting for its time to be born.  That time has come, and I hope you enjoy reading about my phoenixes. Kelly Hashway.”
I love that in this letter the author really explains where her idea for the story came from, it makes it more personal.
Next we have this watercolour bookmark customised for the book included designed by Marquesdusoleil.  I love bookmarks like this and I’m happy to add it to my collection.
Okay for the last of the bookish items included we have this art card print of a phoenix by MarinaPetroFineArt.  I like this well enough but I have no real use for it.
  And this month’s book is….
Into The Fire by Kelly Hashway.  I have never heard of this book and I’m kind of upset that I hadn’t.  It was published in February of 2016 (or under  different name in 2014?).  It has phoenixes,  romance and forbidden love.
In one month’s time, seventeen-year-old Cara Tillman will die and be reborn from her own ashes…
Her life of secrecy has never been easy. She’s watched her younger brother, Jeremy, burn and rise again in a coming-of-age process called rebirth. And just like her brother, when her time comes, she won’t remember anything from her first life other than she’s a Phoenix—a member of a small group of people descended from the mythical Phoenix bird.
The last thing she needs to worry about is falling for the new guy in town—Logan Schmidt.
Cara is drawn to Logan in a way she can’t explain, but she’s not exactly complaining. Everything is perfect…except it’s not. Once she’s reborn, she’ll forget Logan. And to make things worse, a Phoenix Hunter is on the loose, and Cara’s involvement with Logan is bringing out her Phoenix qualities—the very qualities that will draw the Hunter right to her.
Desperate times call for desperate measures…
Afraid of hurting Logan, Cara breaks it off for good. But her attraction to him runs deeper than a typical high school crush. She wants him—needs him. And if he proves willing to stay by her side, their love might destroy them both.
Can Cara hide from the Phoenix Hunters long enough to survive her rebirth? And if so, will it mean a new beginning with Logan—or the beginning of the end?
Part of me can’t wait to read this story but the other part of me; the part that hates the memory loss trope isn’t so keen.  I’ll be ordering the sequel on Kindle if I get past chapter 10 so I don’t have to be a silly mess after what I’m guessing will be a cliffhanger.
  Final Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this box.  While it didn’t have much included it focuses on books that aren’t really popular.  So you know you’ll be getting a unique service. I can’t say what my opinions on prices are as of yet since I pre-ordered the box months ago anticipating it’s release and the prices were different.  I will be ordering again (not Feburary since I have two others I’m ordering) so in a future review I can state my opinion on that state of things. I will say that the Instagram for this box needs work, having more promotion and better photos and such would be a great benefit to reaching a greater audience.  I would like to see more included in this box in the future but as it stands I’m really impressed with this initial box.  The promotional merchandise is neat and the other two pieces of merchandise are beautiful artistic pieces.  I do feel if I didn’t have the promotional merchandise baggie I would have felt somewhat let down at how little was included within this box but I have hope and faith that the curation will improve with each box and as Hidden Gems grows which I’m excited to to witness that progression.
Included was this letter which is the less formal or official equivalent of an introduction and information card.
“Happy New Year!
I don’t know about you but I am so relieved that 2016 is over.  There have been a lot of ups and down.  But it is a New Year and new start. I can’t thank you enough for taking a chance on Hidden Gems Book Box.  This is something I have thought about for quite some time.  While I have liked checking out “popular” books I have also loved finding the books that don’t get a lot of hype.  Authors work hard to bring stories to life that I feel like some authors don’t get enough time in the spotlight. My goal is to do a range of YA and maybe throw in a New Adult book every once in while if I find one that seems like you may enjoy; when I talk about a range of books I want to hit all genres and all the different types of characters that there possibly can be and it being a book that has come out within the past five years.  I can’t wait for the rest of this year. I hope you find a new favorite along the way and maybe an author you haven’t heard of before.
Next month’s book is a contemporary, faith book.  It is of four friends and new beginnings.
April.”
