was Elizabeth Wydeville one of Margaret of Anjou's ladies in waiting?
Hi! No, she wasn't.
"The popular tradition that Elizabeth Woodville herself was one of [Margaret of Anjou's] ladies seems to have been pure invention. As long ago as 1935 Smith observed that the earliest reference to this was made in Thomas More's History of Richard III, and that attempts to identify her with the 'Isabelle Domine Grey' of Margaret's accounts are misguided given that this married lady was among those accompanying Margaret from France and thus could not be the 8-year-old Elizabeth Woodville. Moreover, the Elizabeth Grey 'daily attendant on the queen's person' was recorded in June 1445 as the widow of Sir Ralph Grey, and their son, a minor, was in the king's household." (X)

"I was ready." The words come out angry and bewildered and accusing. "I was ready, and you made me afraid to die." She reaches for his free hand. He links their fingers together.
And he raises the flag.

This song is making me want to start yet another fic to never finish,, "Tell me... Where is your hideout? Who are we running from? I'm starting to think that you were right, and now I'm afraid of letting go of your hand...." Maul giving up on his Mandalore plan and deciding to just stalk Kenobi to tell him about his vision. Staying illegally in Obi-Wan's room because I love putting these guys in situations (and because Maul would NOT leave him alone until Obi-Wan actually accepted Maul is right, which he won't). Following Obi-Wan to Utapau and helping him escape after the clones attack, feeling equal parts vindicated and enraged (because he was proved right but Sidious still won). Them being on the run together....

The ocean empire is old to the rest of the continent, young to its people.
After all, they live so long and have only had one ruler so far, a girl who was once a four legged beast of the sea, floundering her way into adolescence and onto the shores. There, she became but a human girl, stumbling through towns and villages and learning what “trade” and “bartering” and “cooking your food” is.
She was not unhappy, but her heart longed for something she could not recall, longed for the sea. She took a boat out to the ocean and built herself several sturdy lily pads. “I will live here,” she declared, “and I’ll be the queen of this island, just me and my loyal subjects the fish.”
The people below sensed her, and came above to observe. This stubborn human who built on the oceans surface had a familiarity about her. They could tell that she had salt water in her blood, though she was not quite like them. So they came up to visit in curiosity, and eventually offered her gifts. Quartz and coral and their treasured prismarine, all to see what she would make. And make she did, for she was a diligent and hard worker, both architect and builder.
They found a legendary heart of the sea and created a conduit so the builder could breath, and down they took her, showing her their homes, asking her to connect her home to theirs, to become one of them. And so she did, and she made them underwater spires and gardens and whatever they requested. They marveled at how fast she worked, how she took to the water so easily, swimming with grace. One day the people all came together, and came to the surface with materials aplenty. “We see what you’ve given, and we’d like to give back. We’d like you to be our queen. We want to bill you a palace made of prismarine.”
And the people and their queen built and built, and when it was done, they didn’t stop there. They made monuments full of treasure, protected by guardians, portals to the other realm of flames, towns up above so that they could eventually incite and trade with their neighbors.
“We can give them our fish and they’ll give us their goods,” the ocean queen said, for she had learned this on land. “And they will be amazed by us, and want to be our friends and come to our aid when we extend a hand.”
Meanwhile hundreds of years went by, as ships came back raving of palaces with coral roofs and merfolk living on lily pads, legends of the sea kingdom arose, and when the ocean queen came to introduce herself, the other rulers stared amazed.
“We’ve heard legends of you and your kingdom atop the waves, what oh what has brought you to us on this day?” She puffed up with pride, not realizing how long they’d been waiting, that their parents had told bedtime stories of her even. But for now, the Ocean Empire would thrive, and its queen would find love and family, and its people find pride. And as for the queen’s true nature? Oh, all in good time. Besides, I think you may already know how that story goes…

Listen, listen, do I love Suren? yes. Do I think she's any match for Jude? absolutely not. Mayhap I am blinded by my love for the murderous mortal High Queen, but I do not think even Suren's godlike power is enough to defeat her.

sitting here thinking about how the goodness that radiates from dany, from her actions, from her impact has this transformative power that makes others believe. it's not even just as simple as believing in her, but it's very much an adoption of her very world. we see this most faithfully in barristan. yes, dany is more than a queen to him; she is his salvation, his evolution, his own redemption and rebirth. but, barristan believes so wholeheartedly in dany and her vision and her world that he doesn't just refer to her people as her people, but as her children, as she does. some of his anger at quentyn isn't political or anything of the matter, but rather, there's this fury that he harmed one of dany's children in the process of trying to be a dragon tamer. not just one of her dragons, but one of her children. also, don't get me started on the juxtaposition here of barristan's love and belief in dany and jorah's desire for her (and how that desire does not lend itself to that deep belief . . . i mean??? jorah refers to her people as 'mouths with feet' and 'slaves' even after she insists and corrects him numerous times? and when dany dismisses jorah from her service, he tells her that he crawled through the sewer like a rat for her, that he loved her, and it all has this spurned lover vibe, rather than being more dedicated to the service of the cause. IDK barristan is just so much more deeply dedicated to dany and by extension, her causes).

A central element of the myth of [Eleanor of Aquitaine] is that of her exceptionalism. Historians and Eleanor biographers have tended to take literally Richard of Devizes’s conventional panegyric of her as ‘an incomparable woman’ [and] a woman out of her time. […] Amazement at Eleanor’s power and independence is born from a presentism that assumes generally that the Middle Ages were a backward age, and specifically that medieval women were all downtrodden and marginalized. Eleanor’s career can, from such a perspective, only be explained by assuming that she was an exception who rose by sheer force of personality above the restrictions placed upon twelfth-century women.
-Michael R. Evans, Inventing Eleanor: The Medieval and Post-Medieval Image of Eleanor of Aquitaine
"...The idea of Eleanor’s exceptionalism rests on an assumption that women of her age were powerless. On the contrary, in Western Europe before the twelfth century there were ‘no really effective barriers to the capacity of women to exercise power; they appear as military leaders, judges, castellans, controllers of property’. […] In an important article published in 1992, Jane Martindale sought to locate Eleanor in context, stripping away much of the conjecture that had grown up around her, and returning to primary sources, including her charters. Martindale also demonstrated how Eleanor was not out of the ordinary for a twelfth-century queen either in the extent of her power or in the criticisms levelled against her.
If we look at Eleanor’s predecessors as Anglo-Norman queens of England, we find many examples of women wielding political power. Matilda of Flanders (wife of William the Conqueror) acted as regent in Normandy during his frequent absences in England following the Conquest, and [the first wife of Henry I, Matilda of Scotland, played some role in governing England during her husband's absences], while during the civil war of Stephen’s reign Matilda of Boulogne led the fight for a time on behalf of her royal husband, who had been captured by the forces of the empress. And if we wish to seek a rebel woman, we need look no further than Juliana, illegitimate daughter of Henry I, who attempted to assassinate him with a crossbow, or Adèle of Champagne, the third wife of Louis VII, who ‘[a]t the moment when Henry II held Eleanor of Aquitaine in jail for her revolt … led a revolt with her brothers against her son, Philip II'.
Eleanor is, therefore, less the exception than the rule – albeit an extreme example of that rule. This can be illustrated by comparing her with a twelfth century woman who has attracted less literary and historical attention. Adela of Blois died in 1137, the year of Eleanor’s marriage to Louis VII. […] The chronicle and charter evidence reveals Adela to have ‘legitimately exercised the powers of comital lordship’ in the domains of Blois-Champagne, both in consort with her husband and alone during his absence on crusade and after his death. […] There was, however, nothing atypical about the nature of Adela’s power. In the words of her biographer Kimberley LoPrete, ‘while the extent of Adela’s powers and the political impact of her actions were exceptional for a woman of her day (and indeed for most men), the sources of her powers and the activities she engaged in were not fundamentally different from those of other women of lordly rank’. These words could equally apply to Eleanor; the extent of her power, as heiress to the richest lordship in France, wife of two kings and mother of two or three more, was remarkable, but the nature of her power was not exceptional. Other noble or royal women governed, arranged marriages and alliances, and were patrons of the church. Eleanor represents one end of a continuum, not an isolated outlier."
#It had to be said!#eleanor of aquitaine#historicwomendaily#angevins#my post#12th century#gender tag#adela of blois#I think Eleanor's prominent role as dowager queen during her sons' reigns may have contributed to her image of exceptionalism#Especially since she ended up overshadowing both her sons' wives (Berengaria of Navarre and Isabella of Angouleme)#But once again if we examine Eleanor in the context of her predecessors and contemporaries there was nothing exceptional about her role#Anglo-Saxon consorts before the Norman Conquest (Eadgifu; Aelfthryth; Emma of Normandy) were very prominent during their sons' reigns#Post-Norman queens were initially never kings' mothers because of the circumstances (Matilda of Flanders; Edith-Matilda; and#Matilda of Boulogne all predeceased their husbands; Adeliza of Louvain never had any royal children)#But Eleanor's mother-in-law Empress Matilda was very powerful and acted as regent of Normandy during Henry I's reign#Which was a particularly important precedent because Matilda's son - like Eleanor's sons after him - was an *adult* when he became King.#and in France Louis VII's mother Adelaide of Maurienne was certainly very powerful and prominent during Eleanor's own queenship#Eleanor's daughter Joan's mother-in-law Margaret of Navarre had also been a very powerful regent of Sicily#(etc etc)#So yeah - in itself I don't think Eleanor's central role during her own sons' reigns is particularly surprising or 'exceptional'#Its impact may have been but her role in itself was more or less the norm

Sister?
Ah yeah *laughs* so all we know canonically about Louise (from Whisper of the Heart) is that she was the figurine who was made alongside Baron. Thematically, she was mirroring Seiji's grandfather's lost love from WW2, but we never get any actual confirmation of Baron & Louise's exact relationship from Ghibli canon
(The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed my avatar is Louise from her TCR portrait 😉)
Often Baron and Louise were considered a couple, with Louise often either being lost, friendzoned, or evilfied by fandom so that the popular ship of Haru/Baron (to which I am not immune to either) could exist
Then waaaaaay back in 2016, the fandom really got its nails into Louise (I'd like to think I had a helping hand in that) and began making her more than just a ship obstacle and someone (I believe it was @nanenna ) suggested that since Baron and Louise were created alongside one another, they could be considered twins instead :D
(And then we shipped her with the missing Cat Queen, because why not)

I mean its all factualy correct, he would have but also just wow this, yes.
He would have loved transgenderism!!!!
The Twelfth Night is my absolute favorite Shakespeare comedy with the crossdressing and twin mix-up (and Malvolio, he's my special little guy), but just imagine what he could have done with a cohort of trans genders
