This beautiful striped costume has been worn five times over the years. It was almost certainly made for the 2004 mini-series North & South, where Daniela Denby-Ashe wore it as Margaret Hale. It made another appearance the very next year in Bleak House, where Gillian Anderson wore it as Lady Honoria Dedlock. At this time, a belt and buckle were added to the costume – a feature that stayed with the piece as it continued to be used.
In 2009, the outfit was worn by Michelle Dockery as Erminia Whyte in Cranford Christmas. Next, the dress was seen in the 2016 production To Walk Invisible, where Gracie Kelly wore it as Ellen Nussey. In 2020, it appeared in the first season of Belgravia, where Tamsin Greig wore it as Anne Trenchard. At this point, it appears that additional fabric has been added to the front, either for a different look or to enlarge the piece. This piece may be a separate vest under the jacket or may be made to look like one, with the “vest” sewn to the jacket.
Finally, in 2023, the piece was seen in the episode of The Artful Dodger entitled The Duel, where Maia Mitchell wore it as Lady Belle Fox.
This fabric has been used many more times on several other costumes. Click the link below to see more.

Agnes Trenchard in Belgravia (2020)
“Agnes is a smooth-haired, black-and-tan miniature dachshund. She is devoted to her mistress, Anne Trenchard, and prefers to spend her time in the crook of Anne’s arm, or curled up on her bed. Agnes loves the open spaces at Glanville, but is not keen on the pavements of Belgravia, preferring the comfortable silk cushion of her mistress’s carriage. Above all, she hates rain.”

The lush British costume drama, Belgravia: The Next Chapter, from Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes has undergone a few changes since 2020. The setting is still the posh London enclave of the title, but it’s 1871 — 30 years later — and most of Season 1’s characters have died. The spotlight is now on Lord Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), grandson of the original Belgravia’s wealthy, social-climbing merchant James Trenchard.
Tumblr media
Frederick was badly abused by his father, James’ son Oliver (the returning Richard Goulding, shown in flashbacks with Alice Eve, another returnee, as wife Susan). The reason? Frederick’s real father is the cad John Bellasis (Adam James). Never told about his illegitimate birth, the insecure, self-loathing young lord blames his inability to love on his younger brother, James (Toby Regbo, The Last Kingdom). “James was always the favorite child,” says exec producer Gareth Neame. “That completely destroyed Frederick.”
Still, Frederick believes — maybe incorrectly — that his spirited and beautiful new wife, Clara (Harriet Slater), can help him overcome his demons. But according to Neame, “They’re too strong.… Clara feels oppressed by her husband and trapped in that marriage.” And Frederick doesn’t help the situation, as he’s obsessed with his risky investments in the future of railroads and partnering with the unconventional Marquise D’Étagnac (Claude Perron), a moneyed French exile and an astute businesswoman.
Lord Trenchard is not, of course, the only one with a secret. His brother James, in reality a kindly reverend and not the monster Frederick imagines, struggles with his forbidden sexuality.
But there’s a truth-teller in this Chapter: An unexpected visitor could blow up several characters’ lives with just a few words.

Currently Reading January 2023
How to Pray, by Fr. James Martin - I got this for Christmas last year and still haven't started it yet. It's slowly making its way to the top of the TBR pile.
The Merchant of Power: Sam Insull, Thomas Edison, and the Creation of the Modern Metropolis - one of my coworkers loaned this to me and I should probably get it back to him soon.
The Daughters Of Yalta: The Churchills, Roosevelts, and Harrimans: A Story of Love and War - impulse buy at the library book sale.
Those Wonderful Women in Their Flying Machines: The Unknown Heroines of World War Two by Sally Van Wagenen Keil - Another impulse buy at the library.
Currently Watching All Creatures Great and Small, Season 3 (PBS) - War is looming for Darrowby's favorite vets and James and Helen are being adorable newlyweds. This show continues to be like a warm hug.
Vikings Valhalla, Season 2 (Netflix) - I was trying to space this one out after it started while I was on vacation, but now I'm on episode 5.
Les Combattantes (Netflix) - Women in World War One. Sometimes a show is written specifically for me.
Just Finished
Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson - a novel (memoir?) told entirely in poetry. This was a pick for bookclub and it was great. Would highly recommend.
Hemingway and Gellhorn (2012, HBOMax) - I'm not entirely sure why I turned this on. Maybe it was my weakness for Clive Owen. Anyway, this is several hours of my life that I can't get back BUT it make a nice backdrop from which to launch into Mackrell's book. I still can't stand Hemingway.
The Correspondents: Six Women Writers on the Front Lines of World War II, by Judith Mackrell - a very nice overview of 6 of the war's most high profile authors. Taken in conjunction with Hemingway/Gellhorn and the upcoming Lee Miller biopic, a real good read.
SAS: Rogue Heroes (2023, MGM+) - a show so fun I told my therapist I think I needed more 'fuck it, do it anyway' energy. Not exactly fabulous history, or female representation, but a really, really fun soundtrack and a lot of things going boom.
SAS: Rogue Heroes, by Ben Macintyre - an impulse buy while I was on vacation because I'd just finished the TV show. The show's a pretty good adaptation, though I take some issues with David Stirling's characterization.
Domina ( MGM+) - I gave up on this after the timeskip in the fourth episode. Really wasn't expanding my understanding of Livia Drusilla and post-Caesar Rome.
Belgravia (2020, MGM+) - Kind of glad I skipped this (and the book) when it originally came out, but it filled a hole for a couple of evenings.
The Man from UNCLE (2015) - finally watched this movie and can understand why people like it so much.

Costume designer Annie Hardinge likely created this sweet little gown for the 2013 movie Austenland, where the piece made its debut on Keri Russell as Jane Hayes. It went on to be reused in the 2015 television mini-series Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, where Lucinda Dryzek’s Flora Greysteel considered it while holding it up to herself in front of a mirror. Suki Waterhouse wore it the following year to portray Kitty Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, though it can best be viewed in a deleted scene. The gown also had the distinction of being used in both the 2019 short version and the 2022 film version of Mr. Malcolm’s List, first by Olivia Caley as Lucy and later by an extra. It was used again on extras in the 2020 first episode of Belgravia, as well as the 2022 second season of Sanditon.
