So it was no surprise when The Chicago Tribune ran a recent feature on the rising popularity of the clothing-free getaway, or “nakation,” Or when Bon Appétit published “9 Rules for Naked Dining: The Etiquette of Nude Resorts.” (Tip No. 7: “Eyes Up Here, Buddy!”) Or when the American Association for Nude Recreation last fall sent out a news release with three recipes — baked chicken-and-rice, a roasted brisket and a chicken lasagna — that it deemed safe for members to bake.
But many nudists balk at any suggestion that cooking — or vacationing, or living in general — is more fraught for them than for the clothed. In fact, when it comes to cooking and dining, many nudists are unequivocal: It’s better naked. They feel less inhibited, more creative.
“It’s like a painter when his mind is free of everything else,” said Jack Clark, who lives part-time at the Lake Como resort. “He paints whatever.”
The nudist movement has historically been connected to food: When it emerged in Europe, it was as much about diet as about clothing. Some nudists avoided meat-heavy dishes, and embraced vegetarianism and healthy eating.
Today, food is still integral to the experience at Lake Como. The oldest continuously operating nudist resort in Florida, it feels like something between a summer camp and a retirement home.
Some nudist clubs and resorts offer either a restaurant or lodgings with kitchens. Lake Como has both, ensuring that guests never have to don clothes to dine. Its full-service restaurant, the Bare Buns Cafe, serves flank steak and shrimp scampi, while a bar called the Butt Hutt, decorated with license plates and string lights, offers naked karaoke and open-mic nights.
There are no dress (or undress) requirements at the restaurant or bar, beyond the rule that each naked guest must bring a towel to sit on, for hygienic reasons. On a Saturday morning in January, a man stared at his phone as he devoured a plate of fried eggs, while another rode by in a golf cart, munching on a powdered doughnut. Others gardened, played volleyball, walked dogs, read books. They just happened to be unclothed.
Residents and guests said most of the people at the resort are white. (Nationally, there are organizations like the Black Naturists Association seeking to build community among nonwhite nudists.)
Some at Lake Como said being naked had helped them cultivate a more positive relationship with food.
Ms. McMullen, 60, a flight attendant, grew up in Massapequa Park, N.Y., and in her late 30s weighed 310 pounds. “I would go to the beach in this giant balloon of a bathing suit, and hear people laughing and whispering,” she said.
A friend recommended that she visit a nude beach in New Jersey. “I got the nerve to get in my car and go, and for the first time, no one was looking at me. No one was judging. I knew right then that this was for me.”
Ms. McMullen has since lost 185 pounds, but considers that less important. All it took to feel good about her appearance, she said, was taking her clothes off.
She spoke about being naked and being a cook as if they were one and the same, as she made carnitas in her electric pressure cooker. Her husband, Mr. McMullen, 63, who is retired from the plumbing business, strummed his guitar.
“It is very creative,” Ms. McMullen said. “It is very do-your-own-thing. You take what you want and leave the rest.”
The McMullens live here but travel often, staying at nude resorts when they can. Their walls are hung with group photos from nude cruises. Ms. McMullen has two adult sons who visit from time to time, and go naked. For occasions that require them, like grocery shopping, the couple maintain a stash of clothes in a room where they keep cleaning supplies.
On the other side of the resort, another couple, Mr. Clark and Maryanne Rettig, prepared to host a dinner party — something they probably wouldn’t have done back when they always wore clothes.
“I was a very shy and nervous and introverted person,” said Mr. Clark, 63. “I’d stay isolated. I didn’t have a lot of friends. The second I was nude, that disappeared in two seconds. My whole life changed.”
Four years ago, Ms. Rettig, 62, was treated for lymph node cancer, which limited the mobility of her right arm. That arm swelled frequently, so she had to wear loosefitting clothes. One day, she accompanied relatives to a nude beach. As soon as she was naked, none of that mattered. She felt comfortable.
The two split their time between Orlando and their house in Lake Como. During the week, Mr. Clark works as an optometrist, and Ms. Rettig runs a nonprofit group called Tampa Bay Free Beaches, which lobbies for opening up more areas of Florida to nude recreation.
“I feel freer and more imaginative when I am nude while cooking,” said Mr. Clark, standing over his stove, tossing clams into garlic broth and boiling angel-hair pasta. A sign above his head read, “It’s naked o’clock somewhere.”
He deftly maneuvered around the kitchen, nearly grazing his belly with a pot of hot water while draining the pasta, wearing only oven mitts. “I’m fine!” he insisted.
Around 5 p.m., guests arrived, each dutifully carrying a towel — though some chairs already had towels draped over them, in case anyone had forgotten. They ate at a table on the deck, paper napkins slung over their thighs, slurping strands of pasta as the sun slid from the sky and Jimmy Buffett crooned from a speaker.
“I used to hate dinner parties,” said Ms. McMullen, who was in attendance. “They were always pretentious. There was all this small talk I didn’t get. Now I get to be myself. I don’t have to hide it when I don’t understand someone.”
That ease, they say, extends to eating out. At the Bare Buns Cafe, government health rules require that the staff be clothed, but most customers dine in the nude.
Nudists “are more friendly and more understanding than people who are not nude,” said the restaurant’s manager, Stephan Krienes, 78, who is not a nudist. “They are not uptight.” He said it took him “about 10 minutes” to adjust to being around naked people.
Tara Pickett, a cook at Lake Como and some other nudist resorts in the area, agreed. “They walk around like they have clothes on,” said Ms. Pickett, 36. “You walk up to someone and don’t even notice they are naked. They make you feel welcome.”
Where the restaurant does struggle, she added, is in hiring help. “When they find out people here are nudists, they seem to shy away,” she said. “They think they have to be nude here, and they don’t.”
Dee Lyman, 52, a bartender at the Butt Hutt, said she missed mixing drinks without a top on — legal in a bar setting, but Mr. Krienes requires uniforms. “I feel constricted,” she said.
For the uninitiated, residents are quick to explain their ways and distinct parlance. It’s “top-free” rather than “topless.” “Community” or “resort,” but never “colony.” Non-nudists are referred to as “textiles,” like a wizard calling out a muggle.
Being a nudist invites questions: Is it the same as swinging? Is it exhibitionist? Predatory? (No, no and no.) What if it’s cold outside?
“The philosophy is, nude when possible, clothed when practical,” Ms. McMullen said.
For all their enthusiasm about eating, cooking can pose some challenges. Ms. McMullen has learned to take a big step back when taking food out of the oven, to avoid being clipped by a hot rack. Her husband mostly refrains from frying, and wears an apron when he does. When grilling, he keeps a good distance from the flame.
Nancy Rehling, a retired restaurant owner who lives at Lake Como, said she wears a T-shirt when she cooks, to combat splatter. “I have scars all over my tummy and the top of my boobs from cooking,” she said — incidents involving fried fish, boiled-over soups and melted cheese, which “really sticks and keeps burning.”
But several cooks pointed out that safety and hygiene concerns are inevitable in any cooking. Table manners are no different whether someone is clothed or not. And a nudist is equally capable of preparing bacon, or any other food, as a cook in a full-length outfit.
“It’s not about the bacon,” Ms. McMullen said. “It’s about the freedom.”

Once upon a time, or actually twice upon a time now, we’ve met up with several families for a week of vacation. With 20+ kids in one house for a week, what could possibly go wrong?
Turns out, lots of things, but one in particular:
All the kids getting sick. In a row. All week long.
It was super fun… or not so much.
Easy Natural Cold and Flu Remedies
The incident not-so-lovingly-known as “the great minor cold pandemic of family vacation” was not serious and passed pretty quickly, but we had a rough couple of days.
Thankfully, many of the moms were well-versed in natural remedies and collectively pulled out the herbs, spices, raw honey, garlic, essential oils, and supplements to get the kids through it pretty quickly.

Of course, it’s important to see a medical professional for any major or serious illness. Back then I didn’t have a doctor I could text, and in most cases would end up taking the kids in and paying a co-pay just to have a doctor tell me to give my kids water and soup!
Over time I learned and started turning to natural remedies. (And we do go to the doctor for anything major or serious or that lasts longer than a few days.)
For viral illnesses that conventional medicine can’t do much for anyway, I turn to these natural remedies. They won’t knock out all symptoms or provide the same pain relief of over-the-counter drugs, but they help ease the crappish feeling of a cold (super scientific term, eh?).
Kitchen Remedies to Ease Discomfort
Even if I don’t have access to my whole natural medicine cabinet, some simple grocery store remedies can make a big difference! These are my go-to kitchen remedies:
Lots of Water
I find that we all feel better when we stay well hydrated, but especially during illness. Doctors often recommend rest and hydration for minor illness and the advice is sound. At first sign of illness, we make sure to sip water all day to support the body’s natural healing process. This remedy is mostly free but super important.
Raw Garlic
One of nature’s most potent remedies is also one of the easiest to find in any grocery store. It has been extensively researched in over 5,000 studies for its natural ability to help the body recover. Raw garlic is available in many stores and relatively inexpensive. To take it, I mince it and drink with a small amount of water. For my kids, I’ll also mix with honey or maple syrup or add to food to tone down the taste.
Face Steam
I love this incredibly soothing remedy that is easily made with kitchen herbs. What I do:
Boil 1-2 cups of water in a large pot and remove from the heat.
Add 2 teaspoons each of thyme, rosemary, and oregano.
Cover the pan for 5 minutes with a lid, and then remove lid and let the sick person lean over the pot (careful not to touch it). The person covers his or her head with a towel to hold in the steam and breathes the steam to help ease discomfort.
We try to breathe in the steam as long as we can, or for about 15 minutes. This seems to help loosen congestion and soothe the throat and sinuses.

Herbal Teas
Herbal teas can also be very soothing during illness. I keep my ten favorite herbal teas on hand all the time, but we drink them often during illness. Many herbal teas are now available in regular grocery stores. I personally like chamomile and peppermint for easing discomfort during colds and flu.
Bone Broth and Soup
Chicken soup is the age-old remedy for illness, and we also turn to broth and soups when we don’t feel well. These can be made with ingredients from a regular grocery store. Homemade bone broth and homemade chicken soup are soothing remedies during illness and a source of protein and minerals.
When I don’t have homemade, I buy this brand that is long simmered from grass-fed bones for the gelatin many other store-bought brands don’t have. I order online for the best price, but it is now easily found in most grocery stores.
Lemon Juice or Ginger
I find fresh lemon juice and fresh ginger in water especially soothing for illnesses involving respiratory issues or sore throat. During illness, I’ll squeeze an entire lemon and slice a piece of ginger into hot or cold water for a soothing drink. Lemon juice is beneficial in other ways too and many people drink it each morning. Again, this is something you can pick up quickly when needed.
Electrolyte Drink
When my kids really don’t feel well and don’t feel like drinking, I sneak some remedies in by making a natural electrolyte drink. They like the flavor and I’m able to get some vitamin C and minerals in. We also take our favorite electrolytes whenever we travel in case we don’t have the ingredients for homemade.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Certainly not a favorite remedy for many due to the strong taste, but apple cider vinegar can really soothe a sore throat and has many benefits. I’ll drink a teaspoon (or up to a tablespoon) in water during illness. Adding honey makes the taste more palatable.
Other Natural Remedies
A few of my other favorite natural remedies are not readily available in all stores, but I always keep them on hand:
Elderberry
Elderberry is a great natural remedy with a long history of use. I keep dried elderberries on hand at all times to make several different remedies.
Homemade elderberry syrup is my go-to during any illness. The homemade version is very similar to Sambucol, which is available nationwide in many places.
Vitamin C
Many studies show that vitamin C can really help battle cold and flu. We always have it on hand and take it every few hours during illness.
Detox Baths
A detox bath may not really speed recovery during an illness, but it certainly seems to help ease discomfort. I often turn to these detox baths during minor illnesses to help ease symptoms.
Herbs to Help Remedy Cold and Flu
There are many herbs that support the body when healing from an illness. I always keep these around just in case:
Nettle Leaf: It contains large amounts of vitamins and trace minerals and helps the body stay hydrated and remove toxins. In a tea with red raspberry leaf, alfalfa, and peppermint, nettle makes a powerful immune supporting and illness preventing remedy.
Elderberry: Well-known for supporting the immune system. You can find conventionally made elderberry syrups at many stores now, or to save money, make your own. Here is the recipe.
Ginger: Fresh ginger root can be steeped in boiling water to make a tea that is very effective against sinus symptoms and congestion. Ginger baths are a soothing way to stop some of the discomfort of body aches.
Yarrow: This is a common herb for children. Many children’s remedies include yarrow for its soothing properties. It is naturally bitter, so it is often good to include peppermint and stevia leaf (or raw honey) when making a tea. It is great for the liver and kidneys and supports the endocrine system.
Chamomile: An absolute staple for our kids. Chamomile is calming and seems to help children sleep. It tastes great and is easy to get kids to take. We use it in tea and tincture form. My kids always ask for chamomile tea with raw honey when sick.
Peppermint: Great for all digestive disturbances and for calming a fever. It can be used as a tea or tincture or rubbed on the skin to bring a high fever down. It is antimicrobial and antiviral and kids usually love the taste. Take as a hot tea or cold tea during illness in any amounts.

The lemon is one of my top fruits. It's full potential is often overlooked. It helps cleanse the body, provides us with a wealth of vitamins and minerals, helps balance acidity in the body so that your immune system and your healthy inner flora can survive!
Lemon Facts Did you know that the lemon originated from China? That lemonade was a favorite of the Chinese Emperors? That lemon was used for bleaching and as an internal and external astringent way back then?
The lemon tree is a small evergreen that grows up to six meters tall and is now widely cultivated throughout the World.
For you folks in the United States, lemons made their way to you through the Catholic Missionaries and were first of all planted in Arizona and California!
Lemon's Vitamins & Minerals: Vitamin C, B5 & B6, Calcium, Potassium, Copper, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Iron and Magnesium The lemon make's up for one of nature's top sources of potassium. Potassium helps with brain and nerve function, helps regulate blood pressure and works with sodium to regulate the body's water balance.
Acid-Alkali pH Balance - Your body thrives on a delicate balance of acid and alkali. Lemons help this delicate balance. Despite its acidic nature, the impact it has on the body once ingested is to increase the alkali balance so in turn becomes Alkaline and restoring your immune system. When lemon juice is heated, salicylic acid (probably best known as a compound that is chemically similar to the active component of aspirin) is produced. The juice of half a lemon in warm water morning, noon, and night helps eliminate toxins and ease aches & pains.
Sore throat quick fix: Squeeze from a fresh lemon or lemon slice 5-10 drops of juice onto your tongue & swallow these drops. Let the drops linger at the back of your throat. Do this 20 mins before & after eating, drinking. Do this twice a day for a week to help with throat infections & boosting the immune system for colds & flu.
Coughs: Drink lemon juice straight up or mixed with a fruit juice. Also as a hot night cap drink, lemon is great in a hot toddy or grog: Add warm boiled water to half a squeezed lemon juice, add an amount of quality honey to taste.
Weight loss & detox: Lemons are great to help loose weight and detox. Do half a freshly squeezed lemon juice with a small glass of fresh carrot juice or warm water first thing in the morning before breakfast and late afternoon, for a couple of weeks.
Lemon Essential oil In Aromatherapy, lemon essential oil has many therapeutic uses. If you don't like eating lemons, this could be an alternative for you in order to get the benefits of the lemon's good stuff another way.
Lemon essential oil has long been used as a remedy for fevers, infectious diseases, particularly the common cold. It strengthens the immune system, stimulates the kidney and liver functions.
Main therapeutic uses for: Acne, greasy skin, warts, corns, cellulite, arthritis, brittle nails, colds, throat infections, herpes, high blood pressure, kidney stones and varicose veins.
Mixes well with other essential oils: Chamomile, ginger, lavender, juniper, frankincense, fennel & other citrus oils.
Safety data:
Non-toxic. Possible irritant in high concentrations on the skin. Increases photosensitivity - avoid direct sunlight after use.
Lemon Essential Oil Tips:
Throat/Cold & Flu / Immune booster: Use 4 to 5 drops of the oil into your aromatherapy oil burner with some water. Place the burner for 20 minutes in your bedroom before going to bed.
Flick some drops of the oil on your shower unit walls (only on tiles or plastic) before getting in the shower. The steam of the hot water from your shower drives the essential oil molecules into the air giving you a lemon steam inhalation.
Before getting in the shower drop a couple of drops of oil on to your face towel. Use the face towel in the shower and rub the towel on your chest and around your neck.
Cellulite mix: (following amounts are only a guideline) For 10ml of carrier oil (almond & wheat germ preferable) add to 2 drops of lemon oil, 1 drop of grapefruit oil & 2 drop of lavender oil, or 3 drops of lemon oil & 2 drops of lavender oil.
Warts: Add a few drops of lemon oil onto a Q-tip bud and apply directly to the wart. You can also directly use lemon juice instead. The lemon oil is more concentrated and is more effective but both are good.
Recipes:
One tip which lemon is great for food is to help preserve it and stop it going brown with the help of the lemon's antioxidants. For example, squeeze some lemon juice over your avocado guacamole and this will help keep it preserved and stop it going yucky brown!
Lemon mustard sauce for meat dishes
6 T unsalted butter or alternative cooking oil 2 large cloves garlic, crushed 3 T coarsely ground French mustard juice of 2 lemons salt and pepper
Put butter (or cooking oil) & garlic in small saucepan. Cook over low heat 3 to 5 minutes. Just before serving, whisk remaining ingredients; heat mixture briefly. Do not leave on heat because sauce will curdle.
Healthy Lemon Ginger Yogurt Crumble Dessert
Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!
CRUMBLE: Mix together crushed up rolled oats, crushed walnuts, add small raisins or sliced & diced raisins and a sprinkle of cinnamon powder. This mix can be to your taste so have fun making your own healthy mix! The crumble makes up the base and 1/3 of the dessert. Put this crumble directly into your dessert bowls / cups. I usually serve this dessert in glass cups.
LEMON/GINGER YOGURT: Use a low fat healthy plan yogurt. Greek style yogurt is good. Add freshly squeezed lemon juice, a small amount of freshly squeezed ginger juice and mix well but gently into the yogurt. This yogurt mix should make up about 2/3 of the dessert. Add this now on top of the crumble base mix. TOPPING: Fresh strawberries hulled & sliced (or other fruit). Now drizzle quality honey over the top of the strawberries and yogurt.
