unfortunately for everyone i have that "edgy" strawberry shortcake story on the brain again, aka globeland: berrypatch.

as with the other globeland story (perpetua) there's also a heavy focus on the relationship between a story and its audience and audience expectations. so instead of minecraft youtube and adaptations like in perpetua, berrypatch is focused on long-running cartoons that get rebooted every few years for a new 'generation' of children.

so the world of berrypatch gets rebooted 'wrong'. the sbsc characters are teenagers/young adults, and it's...darker, let's say, than what's to be expected for a children's cartoon. the characters are more cynical and online, largely disconnected from nature (as part of the progression of the sbsc stories-- more fantasy rural setting in the 80s --> getting a bit more urbanised further reboots --> 2023's series takes place in a city).

worse still, blueberry muffin wakes up one day and realises that something is wrong, that she's forgetting something. she goes about her day and spends time with her friends as if nothing's wrong. eventually she realises that she's forgotten about the existence of entire people, but when she tries to ask around and investigate, it seems that they never existed at all. she and plum pudding investigate. plum in particular has been trying to track down someone who she believes to have been a close friend but was forgotten, one 'tn honey'.

strawberry herself notices blueberry and plum get increasingly distant and begins to worry that something is wrong. when she does, whole world seems to become more tense and strained. plum observes that the state of the world seems to be tied to strawberry's emotions, so she and blueberry try to pretend that everything is fine, especially when they're around her.

eventually they figure out what's happening. the world has been rebooted wrong, and it's changed in ways that doesn't reflect the vision of the 'true' strawberry shortcake universe/match the expectations of the audience beyond. strawberry has almost reality-warping powers because she's the story's designated protagonist. the world is doomed to end, and the end is fast approaching because no one can seem to make the audience happy. the only way to preserve things, plum reasons, is to make sure that strawberry doesn't realise the truth of the world, fearing that the realisation would be too much for her.

plum eventually has a breakdown because she learned who TN honey is, and the identities of every other character who was left behind in previous reboots.

blueberry tries to keep the secret from everyone, but the strain of making sure that plum is okay + pretending to be fine (read: like the blueberry muffin of previous reboots) and lying to her friends wears her down

eventually, blueberry tells strawberry the truth about what's happening, but she doesn't freak out as much as plum expects her to (plum is projecting). she accepts her role as protagonist, and hopes that when the lights eventually go out, her life would have brought meaning and happiness to someone out there, and that she doesn't want to change herself to meet the expectations of an unseen audience.

the world ends, reality comes apart.

the world is rebooted once more, further into the future, into some kind of solarpunk setting, everyone is closer to their 80s versions design-wise, but some things carry over from the previous version.

the characters are largely overwritten with their 'original' personalities, all memories of the previous version are gone, and some of the forgotten characters have returned. blueberry wakes up from the old world as if it were a nightmare. strawberry remembers, vaguely, and thanks something in the sky for another chance to bring happiness to this world's audience.

Nightsplash - Black with grey, orange and white patches, amber eyes. Saffron - Red with darker ginger down the back, bright yellow eyes. Hawkwhisker - Nursery Guardian, Reddish brown and white tabby with a bright ginger tail and amber eyes. Chicory - Pale blue grey with blue eyes. Beekit - Ginger tabby with green eyes. Pebble - Grey spotted tabby, white underside and green eyes. Berrypatch - White with ginger and pale ginger patches, soft blue eyes. Cherrystone - Red spotted tabby with white underside and muzzle, pale yellow eyes. Minnowleap - Pale blue with darker stripe down it's back, scarred ears and legs. Blue eyes clouded grey with cataracts. Littleleaf - Pale tortoiseshell and white, scarred haunches and bright green eyes.

Cedarfoot - Brown with dark and light patches a right ear droops due to scarring and pale green eyes.
