‘Hardwick Hall, more window than wall’ - Hardwick Hall, an Elizabethan country house in Derbyshire, was built for Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury, also known as ‘Bess of Hardwick’’ - or E.S. as the four towers are crowned. Built in 1590-9 by Robert Smythson, it is one of the earliest English interpretations of Italian Renaissance architecture. It was on the 18th November in 1590 that George Talbot, the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury died. Talbot was the fourth husband of Bess of Hardwick and it was under their care the exiled Mary Queen of Scots lived for fifteen years.
