A piece of my personal fannish history came back to me today and I want to share the story of it because, to me, it's about the very best part of fandom: friendship.

In 1996, I went to Syndicon in Baltimore, Maryland and met my friend Virginia in person for the first time. We knew one another from HIGHLA-L (that's an email list for all you youngsters wondering wtf a -l is) and spent an evening sitting on the floor in a hotel ballroom talking about fanfic and life and Highlander while everyone around us danced to Jim Byrnes and his band.

In 1998(ish) two other HL friends and I went to Scotland for a con where Peter Wingfield was appearing and took a day to drive a massive loop through the highlands. We stopped at the highlander monument in Glenfinnan (on the shores of Loch Shiel--because no HL fan can say Glenfinnan without adding that) and, on a whim, decided to bring a bottle of water from the loch back to Virginia. So, we scoured the car for a bottle and got to work.

I fell in while scooping the water out. It was February.

This past summer, Virginia passed away from cancer and her niece contacted her closest group of fandom friends to ask us if we wanted anything to remember her by (as she was a collector of fandom things) and, on a whim, I said that if she still had the water, I would love to have it.

It arrived in today's mail. I always figured that V would decant it out of the Cherry Coke bottle we had on hand and put it into something fancier for display...but she did not. So there it is, stashed on my office bookshelf until I figure out where I'm going to put it for real.

Twenty Seven years of friendship and laughter (and tears) and inside jokes and fandom drama (and real life drama) and joy...and now grief.

Everyone does fandom in their own way and mine has always been more about the connections with fellow fans than the source material. Virginia and I ran a fanfic archive together. She met me at Five Points Station in Atlanta in 1996 when I was there for the Olympics. She came out to me on a beach in Florida in 2002(ish). We went to Dragon*Con together and bought lightsabers. And she kept this bottle of lake water I got her...for all these years.

Cherish your fandom friends, folks. For they surely cherish you.

Infandous, by Elana K. Arnold

Before I even opened this book, I had to Google something. The meaning of infandous. For those who, like me, didn't know this word, it means something that brings a sense of terrible disgust and aversion.

But, more importantly, for us Infandous is the name of a 2015 contemporary novel by Elana K. Arnold. The book follows the life of Sephora Golding, a 16 years old girl who lives in her mother's shadow.

Sephora, nicknamed Seph, was named by her mom after the makeup store. That should tell you all the you need to know about her mom, the beautiful Rebecca. Rebecca had had a promising career in modeling until she got pregnant with Sephora at 17. Unable to work and kicked out of her parents house, Rebecca had no one to help her, specially since the baby's daddy had left, and raised Sephora by herself in Venice Beach (it's hard to not think of Lana every time I read these words).

It's summer. School is out and the air is hot in California. Seph spends her time in her studio making sculptures and hanging out with her best friend, Marissa.

Seph has a deep admiration for her mother's beauty, to the point that I had started wondering if the incest was between them (I knew this book was incestuous before picking it up - otherwise I wouldn't have bothered doing so - but I didn't knew exactly between whom the incest was) but, at the same time, she seems to resents Rebecca's superficiality and their terrible living conditions. She has never met her father nor knows anything about him, liking to live with just her mom.

The winter before, while on the beach, Seph meets Felix, a surfer on his thirties that was visiting Venice Beach. She decides she wants him and when he invites her to dinner, she agrees. Seph lies about herself, telling him she's 19 instead of 16 and that her name is Annie. After dinner, they kiss and have sex in Felix's hotel room. We don't know much about this event at this point, but Seph clearly doesn't want to talk about Felix to anyone.

Seph makes it clear to the reader that she's not the type to have sex with random man, but that there had been something about Felix that she couldn't turn away from. That something is GSA.

Rebecca's newest hookup, an younger guy named Jordan, gets Seph a job in a surfer shop, which she learns to like.

After calling her many times, Seph finally picks up the phone and answers Felix, who lets her know he is going back to California and wants to meet up with 'Annie' again. To put some extra distance between them, Seph goes to visit her aunt in Georgia.

And dude, this part is filled with incest potential. Seph cousins are 11 and 13 and "both the girls are a little obsessed with [Seph's] boobs". Which is treated as normal by the narrative.... I've a younger female cousin and she never ever started at my boobs in the intensive way that Seph describes her cousins doing. But okay...

No, actually, the whole book is filled with hits of incest. From Seph's constant babbling about her mother's beauty and sex life to Seph saying that Marissa is like a sister to her and that why she kisses her on the lips when Marissa asks.

Anyway, back to the plot. Seph returns to Venice Beach and Felix calls her again, begging her to at least tell him what he did wrong but she doesn't tells him anything.

Last winter, after her hookup with Felix, Seph was going through her mom's stuff when she found a photo of her mom with Felix, from eight before the time Rebecca got pregnant.

Back to the summer, Jordan tries to have Seph's art exposed at the store and in new board designs. At this point, the book explains the meaning of infandous so I guess I didn't have to look it up before reading.

Seph's design becomes famous in Virginia Beach, and every surfer wants a surf board with her art. It shouldn't be a surprise then when Felix comes to the store, looking to buy one for himself. At first, she considers continuing to pretend to be Annie, but quickly changes her mind and confesses being Sephora Golding, and that he knew her mother. Felix enters in shock, piecing it together. He leaves the shop in a hurry, unable to speak.

Seph's story is interwoven with chapters telling fairy-tales and myths revolving around rape. The last fairy tale is The Mermaid and the Wolf, which is the only tale that isn't real (it exists solely in this book). A mermaid is an image often associated with Rebecca, while Felix is connected to wolves. In the tale, a mermaid and a wolf have a child who is a seal, and that seal goes on to have sex with the wolf, making this tale basically a recap of the book.

"And when the wolf returned, the seal girl did not recognize him and he did not guess that she was of his flesh. So they fell together in the sand, and he knew her as he had known her mother."

Elana K. Arnold's prose is beautiful and introspective. That, coupled with the hot California air, reminded me a lot of Francesca Lia Block's Wasteland. Some people online consider that Felix raped Seph, but I disagree. The scene doesn't reads as a rape. He was older than her, but she lied her age, so it's not like he's a child predator either. Seph's regret comes from finding out he is her father, not from the sexual act itself.

I wish the book had been longer and showcased more of Felix and Seph. What happens after he left the store? Will he try to call her again to reconnect with his daughter? The good part of an open ending is that it allows you to make up whatever you want.

The wedding went down at The Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach, VA in front of a relatively small but star-packed crowd. Push A Ton’s best man was Pharrell Williams and some of the guests in attendance included Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

Keeping it all in the family, he was married by his brother Malice, ahem, No Malice who served as the officiant. How real is that?

when wes gets to cold spring, katy is on a screened porch wrapped in a blanket, looking like a pissed off polar bear cub. it’s a chilly march day and he doesn’t blame her - even on a perfect summer day, she’s happier indoors and they drag her outside for fresh air here often enough that he can practically recite her complaints.

“no, i’ve got a big potato sack out in the car i’m going to put you in.” he gives her a shove, suddenly eleven years old again. “course i cleared it.”

she thinks for a moment and then shakes the shawl around her shoulders to wrap it tighter. “the beach,” she declares.

“kat, it’s march.”

“and? you said wherever i want. i want to sit on the beach and watch the water and-“

“sigh dramatically,” wes finishes, rolling his eyes. “yeah, yeah.” 

he stands and looks at her, trying to use a physician’s eye instead of a brother’s. like him, she’s lanky and weighs about as much as a wet cat at her healthiest but it seems like every time he sees her, the tb has wicked away a little more of her. she’s fought so damn hard but she’s pale and faded all the same and damnit, if she wants to go to virginia beach in march, then they’ll go to virginia goddamn beach.

one of the nurses helps her pack and he talks to dr. lake. katy is strong, he tells him, but she’s strong for a woman with tuberculosis. she’s latent now but it could change any day - she needs to take it slow and easy but lake says he trusts wes’ judgement. news to him. lake has always spoken to him like he’s a pipsqueak with too many opinions but apparently an army uniform and bonafide doctor in his name garner him some respect around here. 

she dozes off on the train from richmond to the shore, face tilted to the sun. he tries to read one of her books but fails. she’s on a faulkner kick and they make him feel dumb as a box of rocks. it doesn’t matter how many times she explains as if lay dying to him - he doesn’t know what the blue hell is going on and would rather read something with detectives and murder. 

he’s the first to say he became a doctor for some selfish reasons - best way out in a blaze of glory, two big middle fingers to shep who wanted him to hang around and plant soybeans with him - but taking care of katy and their mama are the only selfless reasons he can think of. he’s not there yet but when he can, he’ll move katy to a hospital closer to nashville, get mama there too now that dad’s passed and isn’t around to say he was born in knox county and will die in knox county a dozen times (he got his wish, wes supposes). get them settled, get a life of his own and fuck the rest. he hadn’t planned on a war in the middle but here he was all the same.

they check into a hotel on the beach that meets katy’s approval and wes’ wallet. separate rooms because wes doesn’t care how close they are - he vowed to never share a room with anyone except a wife ever again after he finished college and he’s kept that promise. after getting settled, they go down to the very empty beach and find chairs so katy can do what she wanted and stare at the ocean.

he and katy spent eight months back to back inside their mother and if he’s the person who knows her best, she’s the person who knows him best. she can read his damn mind like a book and knows every single soft spot he has, from the size of his nose to that he never knows if he’s using fancy words correctly. he knows her immense feelings on the brontes, allergy to anything with fur or feathers, and that she can bide her time on a subject, just waiting to drop it like a bomb.

he supposes he’s lucky that she waits as long as she does before bringing up his imminent deployment.

“you scared?” she asks, eyes closed against the sun.

“not really. i’m not fighting.” 

“probably for the best. you can’t shoot for shit.”

“you’re a shit shot.” 

she shrugs it off. “and? i’m not going to war.” she sighs. “hate that you are though.”

“feel like an asshole if i weren’t.”

“already an asshole,” she says and he doesn’t bother correcting her this time. he kind of is.

“what if i die before you?”

“you’re not going to die before me. you’re going to be one of those wrinkly old ballsacks in the bible and be five hundred years old.” she cracks open one eye and gives him a knowing look. “don’t be stupid wes. you can’t pull it off.”

she settles back in her chair and sighs. “don’t let them plant me next to grandmay and no lillies. belle can’t sing either, i don’t care what she says. my funeral and i don’t want to hear her butcher “i’ll fly away’ while i’m laying there. you get my books, mama can have my watch, and they can arm wrestle for the rest as far as i’m concerned.”

“what if i’m in europe and shep’s in charge?”

“then i’ll haunt you all because he won’t do it right.” she flicks her hand at him, queenly and dismissive. “we’re all going to die, wesley. i’m just more used to it.”

he doesn’t know what to say to that but then again, he’s never known what to say when katy gets into one of her philosophical moods. she’s smarter than him and they both know it. he just wishes she’d remind him of that differently. 

“faulkner’s got this bit in as i lay dying that i like,” she continues after a few minutes of silence. he knows he should have tried harder to read that goddamn book. “vardaman’s talking about this rabbit and how it’s like their dead mama because he’s a kid and he’s trying to make sense of it and he goes ‘then it wasn’t and she was, and now it is and she wasn’t’. figure that’s about how i feel about that.”

wes thinks about lying for a second, pretending like he knows what she’s talking about but then she’ll ask him who vardaman is and he can’t remember.  “kat, i’ve got no idea what the hell thats supposed to mean.”

she busts out laughing. “i knew you didn’t read it, you lying sack of shit.”

“you scared?” 

katy hesitates long enough that he wonders if he’s going to hear that she is. he doesn’t know what he’ll do - stay back and fight god himself, he reckons - but she looks at him again, both eyes this time, and knows she means it. “not really.”
