1. Mendokumentasikan momen secukupnya
Jangan terlalu banyak selfie. Ga perlu take berulang-ulang hingga 50 kali dalam semenit. Tampak depan, tampak samping, mata genit, melet-melet, semua angle dicoba. Ya, oppa tahu, kamu selfie 50 kali, yang jelek 100. Tapi ga perlu segitunya. Pasrah dan filterlah kemudian.
Ga perlu take video lama-lama seakan kamu sedang syuting drakor. Percayalah, videomu tak akan menang piala Oscar. Keep it short but artistic, don’t spend your entire trip behind a screen.
Take the time to put camera away and gaze in wonder what’s there in front of you
– Erick Widman
‘Bada bing, bada boom, boom, boom!’
Once in a lifetime moment. Jangan malah ngabisin duit buat gantungan kunci yang tak berguna. Kalo g-string yang lagi sale, OK lah.
3. Tidur awal, bangun pagi
Mellow-lah sambil mesem-mesem.
4. Play like a kid, Act like a King
We are in such a hurry to grow up, and then we long for our lost childhood
– Paulo Coelho
Namun bukan berarti jadi bego. Tetap waspada pada spesies jahat. Playful yet strong layaknya raja Korea Pheaaaa ‘The King of Eternal Jomblo’ – ‘You can have fun with me, but don’t you dare to mess with me.’
Will you marry me?’
At least you gave it a shot.
Do things that you will laugh about ten years from now.
We live in a strange world.
Explore it, feel it, enjoy it!

Fresh from the kitchen!
Cheewy, creamy, and just the right amount of runny. Exquisito! Tampilannya memang sederhana, tapi rasanya luar biasa.

Tumblr media
Being pitch side during the tour is in incredible as you really see how high the stands are!
Santiago Berdebu.
Ahh, sang mantan terindah.
Tumblr media
I felt so delighted and privileged to see this legendary stadium inside out. Everything is amazing, the changing rooms, the feel…, and the perfectly green straight grass on their pitch
A new transfer from Nankatsu. Posisi: Gelandangan Menyerang.
His motto: ‘Real man is not a woman, Real Madrid is a football club’ Kemampuan Utama ➕: Menyerang dalam gelap Melewati lawan dan menikung teman Mencetak Goal dari sudut sulit, termasuk dari luar lapangan
This is Ronaldo’s third Golden Boot, the second with Real Madrid
The changing rooms. The Tour is spectacular even for me as a neutral

Tumblr media
A Disneyland for Real Madrid fans. Football cathedral. An imposing sight from the outside but it is much more amazing once you step inside. I can see how it’s one of the Europe’s most famous venues
6. El Retiro Park
Tumblr media
The perfect place to relax on a beautiful day. There’s a large lake for those interested in hiring a boat and a lot of walking paths and lawns to lie out on.
Memperhatikan sepasang kekasih bermesraan di bawah The Monument of Alfonso XII.
Mereka duduk berpelukan sambil sesekali berciuman. Pacaran tidak pernah sehistorik ini. Ingin rasanya saya berteriak ‘Mister, butuh peran pengganti?’
Diantara semilir angin, saya berjalan kaki mengagumi keindahan suasana taman.

Kami berkenalan setelah dia bertanya
‘Kayaknya logatnya ga asing?’
‘Eh, orang Indonesia’. Ternyata logat English Jowo saya begitu kental baginya.
‘Udah bayar single shot aja.’
‘Serius? You’re too kind.’
‘Gak kangen?’ ujar saya.

COVID makes us learn that travel is a privilege. So don’t take it for granted.

Shoe salesman?
Surely you know Cristiano Ronaldo? The shoe salesman?
The fanciful tale of a poor boy leaving behind twelve young sisters to fulfill his dream and become the best seller of shoes worldwide. It was a dream he pursued with relentless fervour in Madrid, although he had to take a side job as a ballboy there because he didn´t make enough money selling shoes.
It was at that point that he attempted to take his business to Italy Overjoyed at the chance of a foothold in Turin, he went there, only to find out that his business proposition hat been lost in translation - they had hired him as a striker in their resident football club! Imagine his despair!
Now you may see him on the pitch, you may see him scoring goals for this “Juventus” club, but know that in his heart, Ronnie still dreams of one day holding the famed Shoe d´Or in his hands…

Melihat Nasionalisme Dari Sudut Corner Lapangan
Nasionalis pokoknya. Apalagi para petugas partai, nasionalis pokoknya kalau membahas soal-soal janji kebangsaan.
Suka nonton pertandingan sepakbola? Nasional? Internasional?
Bahkan Rashford juga menulis buku "You Are a Champion" yang menjadi best seller for children.
Saya coba kasih contoh lain, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Percayalah.

Contingent upon the material the watch is made of, just as the time of creation and the meaning of the specific model, costs for a railroad pocket observe commonly will, in general, go from somewhere in the range of $200 to $5,000. It's important here that just about 10% of cases at any point sold were strong gold.

The model number is situated between the watch drags under the wristband. One bunch of hauls shows the watch chronic number and the other will show the watch model number.
I will be able to sell vintage watches
The best spot for selling vintage watches is at an organization like Harold Freeman Jewelers. Harold Freeman Jewelers are approved, watch sellers. We are Patek Philippe and Rolex specialists with long stretches of involvement in purchasing and selling vintage watches.
VIP has the most costly watch
Having said that, how about we investigate five of the most costly superstar watches:

Tou wear a pocket watch in 2021
The exemplary method to wear a pocket watch is toward the finish of a chain (called a coxcomb) in your petticoat pocket. The dandy should go through the buttonholes in the center and end in a pocket on the opposite side, moored by another item like a stogie shaper.
Regularly should a pocket watch be wound
How frequently pocket watches should be wound? With most watches running for at any rate 24 hours on a full wind, when in doubt of thumb, it is reasonable to wind your pocket watch at any rate once each day in the event that it is in normal use.

The principal digit demonstrates the year, the accompanying character the month and the leftover 4 digits an exceptional creation number. The month is recorded as 1-9 for January to September, at that point 0 for October, N for November and D for December.

Our favourite signing sessions from 2019!
After a whirlwind year, we've decided to have a look back at some of our personal favourite signing sessions during 2019.
Here are just a few of the signings conducted last year...
Andres Iniesta
We started 2019 with a bang! On January 12th the team flew out to Barcelona to join up with one of the greatest midfielders of all time, Andres Iniesta. The four-time Champions League winner signed a range of products for us including Barcelona shirts, boots and photos from his iconic career.
Dennis Bergkamp
Our second private signing session of the year came on March 13th, when the team flew out to Amsterdam to catch up with Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp. The team has been meeting with Dennis for many years, but still appreciates his new stories and charming manner each time. Original shirts, footballs and iconic photos were signed by the non-flying Dutchman during the session.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo; also known to some as the greatest footballer of all time. Ronaldo vs Messi is still one of the biggest debates for football fans in the 21st century, who truly is the GOAT? In our eyes, we just appreciate getting to see two incredible footballers play at such a high calibre during our lifetime. In May of this year, a few members of our team joined Cristiano for a very private signing session in Turin. For the first time we were able to get signed Juventus memorabilia from the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. After having signed with Cristiano since 2009 we are happy to still have such a good working relationship with him!
Jonny Wilkinson
In June, we held another private signing session with RWC 2003 winner Jonny Wilkinson in time for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. As we have an exclusive contract with Jonny, we’re the best place to come to for authentic signed Wilkinson memorabilia. We were able to offer dedicated shirts in our pre-order, which many customers took advantage of (see media below).
Spencer Wilding
We were very lucky to have Darth Vader visit our Exeter office in October. Spencer Wilding, who portrayed the famous character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, signed authentic Vader helmets for the team whilst telling the team about his roles in various other blockbuster films and tv series including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Men In Black and Guardians of the Galaxy. Spencer was truly one of the best story tellers we’d had the pleasure of signing with this year.
Jeremy Bulloch
Sticking to the Star Wars franchise, later in the year we met up with one of the original characters from the first trilogy- Boba Fett. Jeremy Bulloch who played the Bounty Hunter signed a range of authentic helmets and posters for us in London. Jeremy doesn’t attend public signing sessions anymore, so we are very lucky that we were able to see him multiple times this year for our own private signing sessions.
Geraint Thomas
One of the last private signing sessions we held in 2019 was also one of our best sellers through the year, Geraint Thomas. On December 4th, Exclusive Memorabilia’s directors Tom and David flew out to Monaco to meet up with Geraint after one of his Team Ineos training sessions. The 2018 Tour de France winner is another one of our Exclusive signees along with Martin Johnson and beforementioned Jonny Wilkinson. G signed brand-new jerseys and photos just in time for Christmas!
With multiple high-profile signing sessions in the works for 2020 already, we’re looking forward to bringing you brand new exciting memorabilia throughout the year!

MACHINE ELVES AND HOMONCULUS STONE BABIES OF THE BRAIN

SCRIBBLE!
All you are exists in the gaps in brain progressing, super but accidental redundancy gone Darwinian. Life came eventually from tiny anomalies in chemistry - exceptions - then cells, multi cells, moving multi cells etc. Human accident also, rampant success, but it is standard evolution ad hoc - porking our way through all resources, like greedy consumers since the LHB. In the gaps is the gold, though.
Electricity chemistry pinging around the brain concertina organic machine learning time needed to create valid next generations. Testing testing blind watchmaking consciousness. Which it eventually did, a few times. Most didn't have it. We did.
Unto now, the gaps have their sight on AI or cybernetics. We perceive the exponential flashpoint where AI fuse is lit; to develop in picotime. We knew that's coming cuz it's not an alien concept. Same thing originated humans from the primates; and all the way back.
It's rather unfair that activating a non-self serving bullshit / inauthenticity / virtue signalling often causes an interruption in natural flow as one audits one's behaviour. The ironic bit is how that sincere audit, only to be genuine and not feed others blarney, causes a stuttering - the look of uncertainty - which is actually taken for insincerity or discomfort. Double irony the slick fuck who doesn't audit or care to be sincere, even the snake oil seller with a learnt parlour, comes over smooth, no discord, certain, this truthful, authentic, sincere, worthy of trust. This is a perception mismatch - imagination to lie besting intuition about who to trust (and feeling, if it needs thinking about, it is less true).
If everything is a drive to solution or at least progress, it's inevitable to eventually realise this must be engineered if it's not to rely on chances intuition (hard to pass on/teach). Once this realisation hits, the choice is how much of life gets subjected to the deconstruction engineering necessary to aspire progress cuz not doing this is devalued, success or failure. Convergence with AI, not cuz it's mechanistic thinking but cuz it's breaking down increasingly complex chunks of reality into variables and algorithms. This is also a changed perspective as it's not all about forensic past dissection but variables algorithm approach to choices and the future especially when it comes to pursuing a goal, to doing.
In the moment yeah you can live in it but if you notice it, it's gone, and if it's well lived it's something good gone that can't be forever. That's all fine. But if it's a moment full of love and life, its loss is no fun - hide, don't think, don't be sad - but whatever, the lovemoment ends with one of you gone and the other going on like a lonely Energizer bunny.
Machine elves are the brain's consciousness dead ends, like personality abortions doomed to toil and live dumb in the deepmind unable to escape the loop of their inspiral succession of doors and rooms.
Or are they the brain making personalities for fun like the oceanworld Solaris. Once made the homunculus has to live cuz that's our fundamental law of life, how much personality is invested - not too much - virtually sane is just as much a natural selection as animals with eyes. like the ocean world Solaris.
The patterns of these abortions - stone babies calcified by time and distance from origin - lose distinctive features as one sees the mass, the in-spirals zoom out to look like consciousness fractals making geometric shapes whose uberform is real grand emotions (powerful insulators) like love and hate and empathy.
There's a barrier between personality prime and subordinate praetorian subconscious, and the machine elves and the homunculus trying to live, escape, loyalists v rebels?
This barrier is reinforced over early childhood though the multiplicity of fluid personality is still within reach. Kids make believe easily, "I'm David Beckham, you be Cristiano Ronaldo," one says, and that's all is needed. This state doesn't last, though. It's not expedient and real lived experience relentlessly teaches how life needs to be lived. Single personality, compromise with the oceanworld it can admit of many moods and facets.
This is the devil's bargain all human brains make, to live. It's another bargain that's not a choice ever made but a fact of our brains today and a fait accompli (like any Darwinian process, it's very extant consideration proof it was naturally selected a long time ago).
Perhaps this bargain where the frontline personality and lieutenants are given the route to the light - the optic nerve, for one - cutting loose the machine elves (loyalists) and homunculus (rebels), denied the light. Maybe this is the real origin truth in the underground/hell metaphor. And heaven isn't a place on earth but a life in a body upon it.
Think also about psilocybin, the inspiration for machine elves. They're always benign, calming, profound, in their own universe etc. Why wouldn't one feel a profound sense of gratitude, meeting the tireless lifelong guardians of your sanity - your identity - your safety. Bad trips could be a homonculus escaping, running rampant, though our brains are creative omnipotent s (inside the skull) so the escapee is eventually brought under control, neutralized.
The patterns made by of these personality abortions / occurs - though most are turned into stone babies calcified by time and distance from origin - lose distinctive features as one sees the mass, the in-spirals zoom out to look like consciousness fractals making geometric shapes whose uberform is real grand emotions (powerful insulators) like love and hate and empathy.
The first and last glimpse of the stone baby consciousness stillborn animations has so much fidelity, so much consciousness, so much depth in layers, it feels real, it feels like seeing God. Profound, ecstatic, personality-changing.
The world is very big. Big enough to send people mad or foetal. Foetal is mostly harmless: jobs and careers and breeding, if there's evil done, at least it's only done by inches. Madness is sometimes not harmless. It can be infectious. It is turning the innumerable into an equation.
At best this means crass approximation constipated by singularities and infinities that might factor conveniently but require faith they are equal rather than unknowns. National fantasy is a paradigm here. Or the innumerable is reduced to an algorithm, confirmation bias and cogdis evidence it's a fairytale (at least to observers). Religion is algorithm, as is mysticism. These bogus attempts to imagine a world that can't be imagined in any meaningful sense require commitment to equations or algorithms. Time devoted to this commitment makes them unreasonably precious. Precious things are possessed but also must be defended.
What's my own algorithm or equation explanation? That's the difference I think matters: it's only made up of expressly human factors, often ignoble and base and sad (for me and you). It doesn't need faith or singularities or fantasy or infinity. The problem is, it may be accurate, but whether it is or isn't it's not compelling and has no spark of any magic. Magic is the light good side of the infinities. It's a fairytale that might become a myth, it's not real except if it's reality to enough people (close by or in reach). I don't think it can be faked if one's being honest. But without the magic, what's the point of life except as a kindness to a duty to others, the logical endgame of nihilism.
Irony: opinion - decisive defining of personality - this is based on past experience but weighted towards quality over quantity JUST ABOUT - education, new data, new situations, research, expertise: these build by quality. Ultimately no matter what the subject but the bigger it is the more increasingly scant facts (in absolute terms, as a % of all facts available), there's a best guess, to the best of my knowledge, far as I know, based on the evidence etc. Cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias plays to this part of the algorithm, Dunning Kruger setting the predisposition based on specifics, demeanour/mood setting the predisposition objective bias/weighting.
To act with foresight based on predicted outcomes, one being preferred to others requires IMAGINATION to try modelling the future out of facts and other opinions etc. Given there may be no visceral or personal unequivocal evidence, and data is nuanced, there's got to be tough choices that require a fantasy to make happen. The scientists with enough facts to model a future disaster must use fantasy thinking to act before it is too late. Ironically the opinionated fool who knows fuck all gets to live real world prosaic, demanding better more undeniable proofs. Which can't happen cuz it's all about the future.
Human Imagination is the universe's most incredible creation (that we know!), not just for its potential but its tiny size and complexity. Trillion trillion neurons and axons in a network that works.
Daily life is a drip drip of experiences (sensory) that fill the brain's memory with, initially, the materials imagination needs to create its own universes. These begin fascinating - FEELING compelling - because they're new enough to seem possible so the brain takes it seriously as curiosity is hard-wired with scale quickly added. Drip drip drip.
Children play imaginative games because the potential (offered by imagination) still seems possible; and there's enough newness in daily drip drip to feed in new raw materials for ever more diverse imaginings. FEELINGS loosed by imagined worlds are intense early on because of thise closeness to possible; becoming less as drip drip drip time goes by and the brain's bullshit detector advances. The imagined world, once familiar, is less compelling.
New imaginings remain a catalyst for EMOTION because in that newness is something for the brain to explore. Imagined games can last longer thus. Eventually, though, the drip drip drip of real life - which doesn't cease - becomes so familiar there's no flow of new raw materials for the imagination; and then the imagined worlds are less fascinating. The experience of the drip drip drip asserts the undeniable nature of real life versus the imagined worlds, i.e. real life is probably, imagined worlds are mostly impossible. Once the latter builds enough reinforcement and the latter is demonstrated almost entirely impossible, the brain's faith in the possibility of these imagined worlds drops markedly and no more intense feeling comes from them.
For a while the real world, which is after all quite big, fills the void left behind by receding imagined worlds - ambition and hope and dynamism reside therein. But then the person gets old and the drip drip drip of everyday life continues relentless so that very predictability and the unlikeliness of early dreams increase so the brain loses faith in that, too. From this point people often become alcoholics (stupefy the brain's bullshit detector, so the feelings can flow again with lesser or despite everyday familiarity - often with a combination of memory and former states of mind), or junkies (various types, various effects, initially respite from the everyday so feelings flow but ultimately familiarity also - needing bigger doses or cecession).
More usually the older person moves to duty, fortitude, ministering to family's needs or - in any case - simply habituates to a less intense, less emotionally charged life thereafter. There's plenty of encouragement baked into our society, to make it easier to transition. Vanity is often a useful vehicle here: maturity equated to accepting duty and eschewing a life predicated on chasing compelling emotions. In any case, that's the way it seems to work.
The bathos of old age tends to be accompanied by physical or mental infirmity, loss of health, fragmentation of brainfunction, as the living organism begins its deterioration towards death and re-atomisation; the network shutdown, memory and imagination lost both as an individual system and a future potential, since the complexity of a particular brain is so unlikely the universe won't last long enough for there to be another quite the same.
The resonating concepts of any human society's myths and legends and fairytales are founded on a shared experience (being human). These concepts become embedded, like the rings in a tree trunk, because they matter - concurrently, contemporaniously, to a high enough proportion of those living at a particular time.
Time sorts the metaphorical wheat from the allegorical chaff, generation to generation, but the artifacts of these shared mythologies - like thunder clouds as gods doing battle or icebergs crashing into the ocean as ice-giants expelled from Jotunheim - echo long after the originating beliefs have become obsolete.
The remnants of the shared metaphor, a shortcut familiarity and unquestioned value, are appropriated by modern day's trinity of evil: propaganda, advertising and art. Prior to corporate capitalism advertising was owned by religion. Prior to democratic pluralism propaganda was owned by the ancien regime.

Why Real Madrid fans STILL do not love Gareth Bale
At the end of last year Gareth Bale won his third World Club Cup in Abu Dhabi. It was his 12th trophy in five years on Real Madrid . That trek includes four Champions Leagues, and in three of those European Cup finals he was decisive. On Sunday, I scored his 99th Real Madrid goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo apart, there is no Madrid Galatico import that can live with the record of Bale and he is the most successful football output of Britain by some distance.
If the poll is now executed, the result may have been the last of the year, otherwise with Isco because you failed with a number of supporters. And the consolation for Bale is that at the Bernabeu there are no hearts and minds that no one really does.
One of the recent achievements of Bale for Real came in hitting a hat-trick in the World Cup semi-finals The caption read: & # 39; Bale complained of pain in his ankle. Something bothered him.
He was accused of having embodied the lethargy of Madrid in what was his worst home result in the Champions League in their history. All this despite the fact that he was not on the field in the first half and sustained an injury in the second half.
When he scored a hat-trick in the semi-finals of the World Cup Cup, the reaction of some media was the question
One of the reasons why the pressure on Bale rises and the moan against him this season has increased, someone is needed who can step into Ronaldo's big personality gap.
The club chose not to sign anyone in the summer because they believed that the arrival of Eden Hazard would limit the opportunities for Isco and Marco Asensio.
Isco in particular has been through a nightmare season. There was more controversy in the campaign when he seemed to miss the opportunity to wear the captain's armband after Marcellin was eliminated in one game.
He has won the Champions League four times and was the best British export ever [
If Isco can be criticized by home sellers, anyone can. This is a club where Zidane and Ronaldo have also suffered the wrath of supporters. Ronaldo was booed on the Bernabeu until well into his campaign of nine seasons.
If one day you return in a certain capacity, the question is what the reaction would be.
He made enemies at the club by taking phsyio Javier Santamaria to Juventus.
The club has, in turn, taken away as much as possible from the TV channel of the club. Each homer to another player who had previously been able to record images of Ronaldo supplying an assist has been replaced by an assist from another player.
Bale scored his 99th Real goal in the 4-2 victory of Sunday at Espanyol in La Liga

If Ronaldo's inheritance is doubtful, what will Bale be? Ronaldo was almost always present for Madrid after joining 2009.
But those 450 goals in 438 games were not enough to create a statute or to rename a stand. Bale has been anything but present.
Some have the theory that it is the tendency to record injuries that tumble his appreciation among fans.
The apparent physical weaknesses affect his image, but what Bale has always managed to be fit for the big games.
He returned to the semifinals of the World Cup against Kashima Antlers and hit a hat-trick in 60 minutes before he played the full match in the final against Al-Ain who claimed trophy no.
Many expected Bale to climb up and make sure that the club would not miss Cristiano Ronaldo He will catch many of the supporters in Madrid when he leaves, but he can also leave them with a tweet full of trophy emoji's.
Always impressed by Bale they might be, but the expensive foreigner will not be able to finish his studies on honor and judging by the recent return of Madrid to his form he will not be ready yet.

The Real Madrid Way: A Canadian sports exec tries to win over — and sell —an iconic Spanish soccer club
Dave Hopkinson remembers Nov. 1, 1994, quite well: it was his 24th birthday and his first day hawking season tickets for the Toronto Raptors, then a professional basketball expansion franchise in a diehard hockey town.
Hopkinson and 23 commission-hungry recruits sat in a room on the 14th floor of a building overlooking an arena construction site. Each was armed with a phone, desk and chair, and all competed to make a sale and ring the six-inch brass ship bell that their boss, Raptors founder, John Bitove, had mounted on the wall as a motivational tool.
The top four sellers were promised full-time jobs. The rest would be let go.
The wireless guy: How BCE’s George Cope cut the cord at Bell
From pro football player to Bay St. executive, CFL CEO Randy Ambrosie has gone the whole nine yards
The big score: How Canadian NHL teams beat their American counterparts off the ice
“Dave was determined, fearless and fun,” Bitove recently recalled. “And he was just a kid, in his early 20s, but he would never give up, which is one of the things I loved about him. He would cold call anyone. He would work the phone. He would work his personality.”
Hopkinson would keep ringing the bell and look over at Bitove’s desk afterwards with a big, aw-shucks-boss-I-did-it-again grin on his face, which drove everybody else in the room halfway nuts, but earned him a full-time sales position.
The entry level job was a toehold on the sports business ladder that he has kept climbing: from selling the Raptors to selling just about everything for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. — owners of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors, FC, Argonauts and more — including a 20-year, $800-million deal with the Bank of Nova Scotia to rename the rink formerly known as the Air Canada Centre.
The deal — the largest of its kind in North American major professional sports history — reverberated internationally. Hopkinson, long sought after by NHL and NBA teams but never sold on a move, became a hot international commodity.
An executive recruiter in Los Angeles called and, this past June, Hopkinson left MLSE to become the global head of partnerships at soccer giant Real Madrid, the third most valuable sports franchise on the planet, behind only the Dallas Cowboys and Manchester United (the Maple Leafs are not among the top 50).
Dave Hopkinson, the former COO of MLSE, has been drafted by soccer juggernaut Real Madrid to market the Spanish team abroad becoming global head of partnerships.
The move to Europe means Hopkinson has to apply the skills he honed at MLSE over two decades to a new continent, while also bringing some of the Old World back home. One of his chief mandates: selling an iconic Spanish club, not just to the true believers, but to the soccer holdouts in North America and China.
“With Real Madrid, Hoppy has stepped up to a whole new level that we simply don’t play at in this country,” said Brian Burke, a friend and former colleague at MLSE. “He is in the penthouse suite in terms of working for a professional sports team. Hoppy is a heavyweight.”
Hopkinson, known as Hoppy since Grade 7, was raised in Toronto, had only ever worked in Toronto and certainly wasn’t expecting a call from Real Madrid. He didn’t even speak a lick of Spanish. But Real Madrid was “Real Madrid,” he said, “ a magical opportunity,” a professional roll of the dice too good to pass up.
The new hire was in the bathroom of his new home in Madrid on a recent November evening, filling the tub after picking up his eldest of two daughters from dance class — a mundane, dad-at-home moment in what has been a whirlwind few months.
“I’ve already bumped into a couple of pointy objects around the office and stepped on some landmines, but I’ve also had some small wins,” Hopkinson said. “I sort of sympathize with what it is going to take to be successful here, and how to be successful around here.”
Real Madrid is valued at more than US$4 billion by Forbes magazine and generated over $1 billion in revenue in 2017, according to Deloitte UK’s annual Football Money League report. Almost 50 per cent of revenues came from merchandising and sponsorship deals. (By comparison, the Leafs, hockey’s second most valuable team next to the New York Rangers, are worth US$1.45 billion and had US$232 million in revenue during the 2017-18 season, according to Forbes.com.)
Money, though, isn’t necessarily the most appealing business aspect of Real Madrid. Part of what sold Hopkinson on the move was the team’s ownership structure. Instead of being lorded over by an egomaniac billionaire or some soulless profit-driven-corporate entity, the 116-year-old club, much like the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, is owned by its fans, about 93,000 community members known as “socios,” who each pay a $185 annual fee.
Many socios have been members for more than 50 years. Collectively, they wield a corporate hammer, electing the team president and board of directors, approving annual budgets and disciplining wayward bosses who stray from the community’s wishes.
Steven Mandis, who spent parts of two years interviewing Real Madrid executives, players past and present and frontline employees for his 2016 book, the Real Madrid Way, believes “community values” and culture, two airy-fairy and hard to define things, are what underpin the franchise’s enviable success, on and off the field.
“It starts with Real Madrid getting the world’s best players that match the community’s values — to play an attacking beautiful style of soccer with class, to win championships and capture the imagination and inspire the current and potential global audience,” the former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. banker tuned business author/academic wrote in his book. “Since Real Madrid’s values are inclusive and universal, appealing to a global audience of all ages, the community grows globally.”
A fan waits the start of a Real Madrid match. The football club has a unique corporate structure that some argue adds to its global appeal.
Mandis’ belief is both elementary and revolutionary. Sports fans are inherently tribal, soccer fans perhaps the most rabidly so, which occasionally results in hooliganism and pitched street battles between rival supporters. But Real Madrid’s tribe isn’t just shelling out for tickets and merchandise, or throwing the odd knuckle or two, it guides the club’s direction.
The results are telling: Real Madrid wins — a lot. It is the three-time defending UEFA Champions League winners and has captured a record 33 Spanish domestic league titles since 1932. Its excellence and fan involvement boosts annual revenues, enabling it to cherry-pick global stars, such as Cristiano Ronaldo (recently decamped for Juventus in Italy), which begets more winning, further accelerating the growth of the international fan base and the crush of sponsors worldwide clamouring to get a piece of the action.
Which is where the guy from Toronto comes in.
Hopkinson understands how flaky talk of “values” sounds, especially to a North American sports audience, and especially around his hometown, where the greed of former Leafs owner Harold Ballard scarred a generation of hockey fans, and a pint at Scotiabank Arena sells for $12 a pop. But after three months in Madrid in a job he parachuted into in part to walk the tightrope between taking a storied franchise in some new business directions and observing its old traditions, he has bought in.
He is taking Spanish lessons, working with a language app and sees Real Madrid’s values reflected in everything from the tenure of its employees — people get hired and they don’t leave — to the tiniest of personal touches. For example, sending out company wide emails to announce an employee celebrating a birth or mourning a family death, regardless of corporate rank.
Dave Hopkinson with his family at the Real Madrid field.
“I don’t see these values articulated anywhere — there is not some plaque in the lobby saying, “This is our way,” he said. “But it is something that is understood around here; it’s palpable.”
Of course, as a sales guy, Hopkinson wakes up every day thinking about the value of money and how he can squeeze more revenue for Real Madrid out of a globalized sports industry.
“Dave has no problem putting a big number on the table and justifying it,” said Brian Cooper, chief executive of MKTG, a Toronto-based marketing/sponsorship company that represented Scotiabank in the MLSE naming rights deal.
A lifetime ago, Cooper was a Raptors executive when Hoppy was a “ticket sales grunt.” In many ways, Cooper said, Hopkinson has grown by bounds, but in others he is the same kid with the easy smile that he was from the start: smart, well-prepared, relentless, quick to remember a name or a fact, keen to network and able to make everybody feel as though they are part of the team.
“Dave’s team at MLSE would do a tremendous amount of work up front on who you are and what your needs are — and who your target audience is,” he said. “And he is going to bring that sophistication to the Real Madrid brand.”
Hopkinson, like almost every executive in every industry everywhere, sees Real Madrid’s greatest potential for growth in China and the United States.
“Despite the fact that football is the world’s most popular game, it is underdeveloped in the two biggest markets,” he said.
Real Madrid already has an office in Beijing, and will open one in the U.S. sometime before U.S.-Canada-Mexico host the 2026 World Cup.
Hopkinson gives a purely imagined example of how Real Madrid might crack into China’s corporate coffers. Take a hypothetical Chinese domestic brand — a toque, an electronic gizmo, a you-name-it — that is manufactured in China and, as with many such brands, nobody in the West has ever heard of.
Enter Real Madrid, sports behemoth, with more than 200 million followers on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), only about three per cent of whom actually reside in Spain, plus a Champions League final television audience of around 165 million viewers annually. (The average Super Bowl draws about 100 million viewers; the Cowboys count around 13 million followers across social media platforms.)
Marry all those eyeballs, tweets and likes to a Chinese toque on an imagined Real Madrid player’s noggin and that brand suddenly goes from having zero international profile to the big leagues. The big leagues, in theory, give a company licence to charge a premium for its goods associated with Real Madrid’s superstars and, naturally, give Real Madrid licence to charge the company a fortune to be associated with its trusted, winning narrative.
“If you look at the statistics of the value of Real Madrid, plus their numbers in terms of fandom and fan behaviours, then you start to realize the magnitude of what they are talking about,” said Cheri Bradish, a sports marketing professor at Ryerson University in Toronto.
Although consumers have never been more adept at ignoring advertising messages — the average human’s capacity to delete or ignore pop-up ads, videos, television commercials and email-marketing blasts is by now well honed — getting attention from existing fans isn’t a problem for Real Madrid.
The team’s fans aren’t looking for less, they always want more, which has led to some inventive new twists in corporate partnering. For example, every Real Madrid player gets presented with a new Audi (other major sponsors include Adidas, Emirates, Hugo Boss and Nivea Men) at the start of the season, an event sparking much fan speculation: What car is player X going to pick? How about player Y? What does the car say about the player who drives it?
The Audi draw becomes a media/social media story, well covered by the club’s website, with the vehicles as props and the players as characters. Players who subsequently elect to drive a vehicle other than an Audi to the team’s training facility must park in a remote lot surrounded by a high hedge. The Audi drivers’ park in high visibility spots close to the front door.
“Does everybody care about what kind of car the players drive? No,” Hopkinson said. “But lots of people care about Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Real Madrid.”
What he means is: soccer-loving automotive geeks get what they want, while the greater mass of Real Madrid fans get something, too — a glimpse of their heroes doing something other than playing soccer. Audi, of course, gets a bunch of famous athletes driving their cars to work every day.
But getting attention in the U.S. is different. Football — soccer on this continent — has been trying to conquer the U.S. ever since Pelé and the New York Cosmos burst onto the scene in the 1970s. Major League Soccer has 23 teams, including three in Canada, and its fans are enthusiastic, but the sports pecking order list still reads: NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL … MLS.
Dan Mason, a sports professor at the University of Alberta, argues pecking order isn’t what it is important. Real Madrid doesn’t need to convert Joe NFL Fan. It simply has to convince U.S. multinationals interested in boosting their profile overseas to harness the Real Madrid brand power to do it for them.
Real Madrid isn’t exactly a non-entity in the U.S. market. Fox’s English and Spanish broadcasts of Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Juventus in the 2017 UEFA title game drew a combined three million viewers, or about a million more than the average MLS championship game.
“Just because Major League Soccer isn’t as successful as the other major sports leagues in North America, it doesn’t mean that Real Madrid isn’t a valuable brand in North America,” Mason said.
Hopkinson declined to disclose any Real Madrid state secrets, but one imagines the likes of General Electric Co., Verizon Wireless, Coca-Cola Co. and more should expect a call from Spain soon.
Hopkinson, meanwhile, turned 48 on Nov. 1, the last in a cascade of family birthdays since the move to Madrid in September. To celebrate, he and his wife, Lawrie, took their girls, Miranda, 15, and Claire, 10, to Paris for the weekend. They got an Airbnb, went up the Eiffel Tower, strolled along the Champs-Elysées, ate great food, drank it all in.
What had started as a job offer had become a family adventure, and a fresh challenge for a veteran sales guy with a knack for ringing the bell the Hopkinson way.
“You know how they say there is some magic about the 90-day mark at a new job?” Hopkinson mused, from his bathroom hideaway. “Well, I feel the magic is happening. I am getting dangerously close to figuring this all out.” Financial Post
