Jane: Kurt, you ever see something that changes your whole life?
Kurt: I saw you!
Jane: You know that's really sweet, but it also makes this very awkward because I was just going to show you a picture Bethany drew of Rich as a Chicken.

the apples of our eyes (jane/kurt + bethany + danny drabble)
“App-oh!”
Jane giggled as she heard Danny’s sing-sing voice from across the yard. She watched as he bent over and picked up an apple from the ground, standing up and smiling down at it as he cradled it in his two little hands.
“App-oh!” He said again proudly, taking the few steps over towards the bucket by the tree. He bent over again and placed the apple in the bucket and then stood up, pushing the brim of his little hat up on his forehead.
“App-oh!” He cheered, looking over at Bethany as he clapped his hands and she joined in, clapping her hands too, which only made him smile wider.
Jane laughed and grinned over at Kurt as he carried in a bag of soil from the side of the house.
It was their first weekend back in their Colorado house, and they had quickly discovered that the previous owners had ignored the backyard of the house, including the apple tree that Kurt had planted there years earlier when they had first moved in.
That had left them with a yard covered with apples, most of them rotten or little crab apples that they would have to throw out. And then Jane’s jaw had nearly dropped to the ground when Kurt had suggested he build them a compost at the side of the house.
“A compost?” she’d asked, shifting Danny in her arms and raising her eyebrows and he grinned shrugging his shoulders.
“I thought you’d be a fan of that, I hear it’s very environmentally friendly,” he said and she smiled, leaning over to press a kiss to his lips.
“Oh it is, I’m just surprised you know what a compost is,” she teased as she reached up and gently tugged Danny’s hands away from his mouth as he tried to take a bite of a rotten apple he had picked up. “No, Danny, these apples aren’t for eating,” she murmured, pressing a kiss to his temple as he frowned and reached for the apple.
“App-oh,” he grumbled and she chuckled, tossing the rotten apple towards Kurt.
“First one for the compost,” she said with a grin as she turned to Danny and brushed her nose against his.
“What do you think Danny? Should we go get Bee and build a compost with Daddy?” she asked, grinning as his face lit up at his big sister’s name.
“Beebee!” he said, clapping his hands, and Jane laughed, bouncing him in her arms as she turned to head into the house, grinning over her shoulder at Kurt.
So, she and Danny had set off for Allie’s to pick up Bethany, while Kurt headed to the hardware store to get supplies. Jane had put the kids to work with picking up all the fallen apples scattered across the yard, putting a couple of empty buckets out for them to fill up while she sat at the table on the deck and made them all some sandwiches.
“Mama Jane?” Bethany called and Jane looked up. “How come we can’t eat these apples?”
Jane smiled and stood up, walking across the yard to join the kids.
“Well, these apples aren’t too good anymore, they fell off the tree and got stuck under the snow in the winter,” she said, kneeling down and wrapping her arm around Bethany’s waist. “But we’re going to get the yard cleaned up so we can grow some new apples!”
“App-oh! App-oh!” Danny called proudly and they looked over, seeing him hold an apple in each hand over his head. Kurt reached over and scooped him up, laughing as Danny squealed and clutched on to his two apples.
Jane and Bethany laughed as Kurt swung Danny in the air, flying him like an airplane over to the bucket. Danny giggled and dropped his apples into the bucket, laughing harder as Kurt tickled his belly.
“Look at all your apples, Danny!” Kurt exclaimed, grinning as Danny clapped his muddy hands together. He pressed a kiss to his cheek and swung him onto his hip as he turned towards the girls.
“How about some lunchtime?” he asked, nodding towards the table on the deck.
“App-ohs?!” Danny asked excitedly and they all laughed.
“Sandwiches!” Jane said, standing up and taking Bethany’s hand. “But I might have some special applesauce for dessert,” she added, giving her hand a squeeze and Bethany smiled widely, bouncing up and down.
“Come on, Danny!” she exclaimed and Danny squirmed in Kurt’s arms until he leaned over and set him down. Bethany reached for his hand and they set off towards the house together.
Kurt reached over and hooked his arm around Jane’s shoulders, pulling her into his side. She rested her head against his chest, smiling as he leaned down and pressed his lips to the top of her head.
They watched as Bethany and Danny walked towards the house, Danny keeping a tight hold of Bethany’s hand. When they were a few steps from the back deck, Danny stopped and bent over, picking up another apple in his free hand.
“App-oh for Bee!” he said cheerfully, holding it out to her as he stood up. Bethany grinned and accepted it, letting go of his hand for a moment to wrap her arms around his little shoulders in a hug.
“Thank you, Danny!” she cheered, reaching to take his hand again and helping him up the little set of stairs up to the deck.
Jane tilted her head back to look up at Kurt, smiling as he leaned down and kissed her softly.
“I’m really glad you planted this apple tree,” she murmured and he chuckled, glancing behind them at it and then back down at her.
“Even though we’ve ended up with a yard covered in rotten apples?” he mused and she laughed, nodding as they started towards the house, where Bethany and Danny were waiting for them on the deck, both covered in mud and grinning from ear to ear. “And two kids covered in mud?” he added.
Jane smiled at them and then up at Kurt, squeezing her arm around his waist.
“Especially because of that.”

Allie Knight
I've watched the deleted s3 scene now for a few times, and it just makes me like Allie's character more and more. Not only does she assure Jane she doesn't blame her for putting Bethany at risk (Come on, Jane. You're making it sound like you chose to have a bounty on you. Kurt has some convincing to do…), but she has a very realistic understanding of the risks of their jobs AND parenting a toddler.
Love that!
I want more Allie in s4!

Did I only adopt this doggy because her name was Bethany?
No.
Am I incredibly excited that this doggy reminds me of Blindspot and its my own little inside joke?
Yes.

Ok, I just found this on Pinterest, and I don't even know who I should credit for this, but look how cute!
I love how they all are just looking at the baby 🥰
I know they aren't even in character yet. Still, I can totally see Tasha and Patty all smiling, talking to Bethany while doing baby voices, and talking a little bit with Allie about how big she is until Kurt arrives. Then they'll be like, "oh, yeah, the wedding", not because they forgot about it, but because the baby took all their attention.

The Family (Blindspot post-s2 fic)
A/N: I wrote something again! I've been marinating for weeks on the idea of trying to write something less angsty, without the foggiest notion what it might be. Happily this arrived just in time for the new year. Is this what you'd call fluff?
Set broadly between the second last scene of 2x22 and the first scene of 3x01. Jane-centric but there's Jeller and Allie and Conor in there too. Happy new year folks :)
~~~~~
Jane didn’t know much about family. Her team was the closest thing she could ever remember having to one, but everything that happened after Mayfair, after the CIA, even in the weeks after her return seemed to suggest that family was fickle, fleeting. Then she met her real family, a brother she was bound to by history and by blood, and through good and bad she thought she’d begun to understand, especially when he'd stood up to their so-called mother. But then that same brother joined that same so-called mother in trying to murder millions of people, and they never got a chance to find out if blood could love strongly enough to forgive each other's mistakes. (Hers was a very grave mistake. He was right to feel betrayed, although it didn’t excuse the attempted mass murder.)
And then Kurt said those three words, and a day or two later she said four back, and a new and puzzling sort of belonging began to unfold.
She worried that they were moving too quickly; it was Allie who told her to get over it. “Kurt said the same thing a few weeks ago,” she said, and smiled a little at the poorly-hidden anxiety that ghosted over Jane’s face. (It was not unlike the look he’d worn.) “I think he was afraid of scaring you off,” she offered as reassurance. “But I’ll tell you what I told him: you guys have danced around each other and put this off through so much, you have a lot of time to make up for. You two are great together, don’t overthink it.”
In the final weeks as Allie’s due date approached, they were already engaged. The trip to Venice had come together surprisingly last-minute; a break for the two of them ahead of his impending fatherhood, because who knew when he’d be able to get away again? She wasn’t expecting his proposal, and truth be told she wasn’t sure he was expecting it just then, either. But something about the city and the night air and the lights provided just the right kind of magic, and before she knew what was happening, the hand that held hers was tugging her to a halt and he was asking the question. There wasn’t time for a ring, but what would she have done with one anyway? Everything she needed was already holding her hand. (He would later admit that he had felt bad when she declined his offer to go shopping, but that he had also kind of adored the little furrow in her brow when she resolutely asserted that the traditional two-rings style would only have been a hindrance, because how was she supposed to punch anyone with a diamond on?)
By the time the call came that Allie had gone into labour nearly a week early, and two days ahead of his scheduled departure to Colorado, there hadn’t been a question. (At least not in his mind.) His face was a frantic mix of emotions as he stuttered something about go-bags and airports, and she placed her hand on his forearm and stood herself in front of him until he met her eyes long enough to take a few deep breaths, at which point his expression melted into a warm but nervous smile. “I’ll call the airline, and work,” he said, “you drive.” She was hard pressed to keep her eyes on the road when she heard him say, “Two tickets,” and “Yes, she’ll need the time off too.”
If three’s a crowd then four was a throng. And so she found herself in a waiting room, sitting nervously beside Conor as they, well, waited. She’d only met Conor a few times before, and her impression had always been of someone a bit stoic. A man of not-too-many words – not unlike Kurt, she mused – but perhaps less commanding, and she had a sense that he was simply reserved rather than walled-in the way Kurt was. (The way he was to everyone but her, of course.) But as they sat in the waiting room together, he engaged her in easy conversation, less about what was going on down the hall and more about general topics – his own family, his and Allie’s work, life in Denver, places that she and Kurt should see, and that maybe they should go together. It was an excellent distraction, and it made her feel welcome.
When the nurse came to tell them they were being asked for, he nervously rubbed his palms on his knees as they both stood, and they exchanged a look that was both reassuring and seeking reassurance. They walked down the corridor side by side, but as they arrived at the room the nurse had indicated, her steps slowed and she stopped in the doorway behind him. Kurt was half-seated on the edge of the bed, his left leg tucked up in front of him, left arm around Allie’s shoulders, and his right hand placed gently on the baby in her arms. A rush of a million emotions flooded Jane’s body at the sight, too many to name. (But among them, she was absolutely certain, were both joy and deep-seated fear – which was really saying something.)
The subtle shift in Kurt’s face when he saw her standing there – it was impossible that he could look any happier or more lovestruck, and yet somehow, he did – told her everything she needed to know about what he wanted for his family. Of course she needed to be there, for him; he truly wouldn’t have wanted, nor stood for it being any other way. And so she was there, the fifth person in the room. (Even if she did feel a little more like a fifth wheel.)
When Allie called her over and asked if she’d like to hold the baby – Conor was right there; she wanted Jane to go first? – her nerves returned and gripped her so solidly that she was surprised to find her feet carrying her forward of their own accord. She stepped hesitantly up beside Kurt, unsure of what to do with her hands as he gently accepted his daughter from Allie and slid forward until his other foot hit the floor. He placed the tiny bundle in Jane’s arms – how could a human be so small? – and stroked the little pink forehead with one finger while his right arm came around her waist. She was sure the little one would start screaming the moment he passed her over – she was a stranger, after all, and can't newborns tell? – but when the fat little face just scrunched up for a moment then relaxed with the biggest yawn and the tiniest sigh, everything changed. Jane didn’t think she’d ever felt bigger or smaller than she did at that moment, and when she looked up at her fiancé in wonder, she could swear his face would split open if he smiled any harder. She found herself misty-eyed, and utterly at a loss for words.
She looked down again at her future step-daughter’s face, and then around at each of the others in the room, almost as overwhelmed at their expressions as she was by the little girl herself. Conor had mirrored Kurt's earlier position on the opposite side of the bed, his arm around Allie’s shoulders, a warm and genuine smile on his face and an encouraging nod in her direction as he watched her cradling the sleepy infant. Allie looked exhausted but she glowed, all pride and love and welcome, and seemed just as gratified and truly happy to see Jane holding her child as she had looked when she was passing the baby to Kurt. And Kurt, he was misty-eyed himself, beaming down at both of them, the two greatest loves of his life. She was supposed to be there, of course she was. And then she found her words.
“Hello, little one,” she murmured with a smile, “welcome to the family.”
Since I just finished writing about Allie and Bethany, here are my caps from the start of 4x01. Baby Bee looks pretty confused, but I love how happy Patterson looks dancing with her (okay, it’s probably just Ashley and she’s not even trying to be in character, but hey).
the sting (jane/kurt + bethany drabble)
“This way...a little more,” Bethany mumbled, biting her lip in concentration as she reached out with her little arm. “No, Mama Jane, the other way,” she corrected and Jane chuckled, shifting the toddler in her arms to hold her out to the direction she was requesting. She watched as Bethany hung the ornament on her desired branch, adjusting it until it was just so. She then twisted in Jane’s arms to look back at her, beaming with a proud smile.
“Ok, next one!” She said cheerfully, wiggling until Jane set her down and she toddled over to the box of ornaments on the floor by the sliding doors. They’d been at it for two hours and their tree was only one third of the way decorated, due in large part to Bethany’s insistence that she hang every ornament herself. And due to the fact that she took ages to decide where each ornament should go. Any other parents might have grown exasperated and frustrated ninety minutes earlier. But it had been the best two hours Jane had had in a long, long time. She glanced over her shoulder at Kurt, who was sitting on the couch behind them, stringing yards and yards of popcorn together, the job he’d been assigned by his very bossy daughter. She laughed as he snuck yet another handful of popcorn into his mouth and he shrugged his shoulders innocently. “We’ve got lots,” he insisted and she grinned, turning back towards Bethany, who was bent over into their box of ornaments, her little butt wiggling in the air as she rummaged through them. “How’s it going there, Bee?” she called out and Bethany popped up, a frown having replaced her earlier smile. “I can’t find it,” she said, furrowing her brow before turning back towards the box again. “What can’t you find?” Jane asked, making her way over towards Bethany and kneeling beside her. Bethany didn’t answer, instead continuing to look through the contents of the box, huffing and puffing as her search came up empty. Jane glanced back at Kurt, who shrugged his shoulders and set his bowl of popcorn aside as he stood up and made his way over to join them. “What are you looking for, Bee? We can help you look,” he said, reaching out and resting his hand on her back. But she stood up and looked at him, her eyes filled with frustrated tears as she crossed her arms over her chest. “No, you don’t know what it looks like,” she said grumpily, her cheeks flushed as she stamped her foot. Kurt raised his eyebrow at her, sensing a rare tantrum coming on, likely exacerbated by the fact they were an hour past Bethany’s nap time. “Can you tell us what it looks like?” Jane asked and Bethany turned towards her, shaking her head as her tears spilled over onto her cheeks. “But then it won’t be a surprise!” she cried as she sat down between them and buried her face in her crossed arms. Kurt and Jane shared a sad smile over top of her head as Kurt reached over and picked up his little girl, pulling her into his lap. She curled into his chest and he rubbed her back soothingly as her tiny body shook with her frustrated, tired tears. Jane reached over and gently brushed Bethany’s curls off her face, her hand joining Kurt’s on her back. “It’s OK, Bee, we’ll find it,” she reassured her, still having no idea what “it” was. After a few minutes, Bethany’s cries had subsided and Kurt gently rocked her to sleep against his chest, leaning down to press a kiss to her tear-stained cheek. “Well, that took a turn,” he whispered to Jane and she chuckled, peering over into the box of ornaments. Allie had shipped them to New York last week ahead of Bee’s visit, she and Bethany had gone shopping for them together in Colorado. It was their first Christmas all together in their home and Bethany had picked out a whole box of special ornaments for the occasion. “I’ll take her to her room, we can keep going with the decorating when she wakes up...and hopefully find the ‘surprise,’” Kurt said, balancing Bethany with one arm as he stood up. Jane smiled after them as she watched Kurt walk down the hallway with his little girl in his arms. She turned back towards their tree, chuckling at its many empty and bare spots, but so looking forward to filling them up. She didn’t care if it took days for them to decorate it. In fact, nothing sounded more wonderful to her. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and dialed Allie on FaceTime, laughing when she answered wearing a face mask and holding a glass of wine. “Isn’t it 2pm there?” Jane asked, leaning back against the couch and Allie nodded, taking a sip of her wine. “It’s five o’clock somewhere! How’s everything going?” she asked. “Good, really good,” Jane told her, turning the phone to show her the beginnings of their tree. “Thanks again for the ornaments,” she added as she turned the phone back towards her. “Except, Bee was looking for one and got really upset when she couldn’t find it, and she wouldn’t tell us what it looks like, she said it was a surprise,” she added, looking down into the box and then back at the phone. “I was hoping you might know and I could nudge it to the top for her?” Allie laughed and shook her head, knowing full well what a handful her daughter could be when something didn’t go according to plan. “It’s a special one she made for you guys at school,” Allie explained and Jane’s heart swelled in her chest. “But she brought it home the day after I’d shipped the box so I wrapped it up and stuck it in her suitcase, she must have forgotten.” Jane chuckled and nodded, smiling up at Kurt as he rejoined her in the living room. “Mystery solved,” Jane said to him as he sat on the couch behind her and leaned down to wave at Allie. “Call me back when she wakes up and I’ll tell her where to find it,” Allie said but Jane shook her head. “It’s OK, we’ll set her up to find it herself,” Jane said, tilting her head back towards Kurt. “I think we can manage a mini sting operation for a three year old.” Allie laughed and nodded, though Jane could make out her raising her eyebrows at them under her face mask. “I don’t know, this particular three year old is a tricky one,” she said and they all laughed and nodded in agreement. They said their goodbyes to Allie and Jane scooted up onto the couch beside Kurt. She reached across him for the bowl of popcorn, digging in for a handful of her own. “See?” he challenged her, pulling her feet into his lap. “It’s hard to resist.” She rolled her eyes and reached for another handful, perfectly content to sit like this with him while they looked at their partially-decorated tree. “So, what do you think for our little ornament op?” he asked after a while and Jane leaned to the side, resting her elbow on the back of the couch as she raised her eyebrows at him. He stared at her for a moment before furrowing his brow and shaking his head. “Uh oh...I know that look...” She laughed and gave him a mischievous grin, shrugging her shoulders innocently. “I’m just thinking that if Bee wakes up and finds her daddy in his Christmas pajamas for a special early Christmas pajama party that maybe she’ll go looking for her Christmas pajamas in her suitcase,” Jane said teasingly and Kurt wrinkled his nose in confusion. “But I don’t have Christmas pajamas,” he said, watching as Jane stood up and walked over to the hall closet where they’d hidden some gifts. She returned with a wrapped gift box, setting it down in his lap before she plopped back down beside him. “I think this calls for an early Christmas present,” she said, nudging him to open the box. He groaned as he did and pulled out a large, red plaid, one piece pajama set, complete with two snowflakes on the butt. “A onesie?” he whispered, looking over at her with wide eyes as she laughed hysterically. “To match Bee’s!” she insisted between laughs, trying to keep her voice down so they wouldn’t wake Bethany. “Allie sent me the link to get the matching ones.” “You and Allie have too much time on your hands,” he muttered, placing the onesie back in the box. “Well, what about you?” he asked, raising his eyebrows at her and she nodded, leaning forward to kiss him reassuringly. “I got one for me, too,” she told him, kissing him again. “Now come on,’ she said, patting his chest and popping open one of the buttons on his shirt. “Make sure it fits, or I need to come up with another idea for an op.” He laughed and shook his head, standing up and stripping down to his boxers in the living room. He playfully tossed his shirt at Jane, laughing as it landed over her head. “Oooh, a strip tease, too,” she joked, folding his clothes as he stepped into the onesie. She laughed as he pulled it up over his shoulders, leaving it unzipped down to his bellybutton, revealing his hairy chest. “This is ridiculous,” he muttered, placing his hands on his hips and she grinned, standing up and walking over towards him. She slipped her hands inside the open zipper, wrapping her arms around his waist as she reached up to press a kiss to his chin. “I think it’s actually kinda hot,” she whispered and he peered down at her, raising his eyebrows. “You’re such a weirdo,” he muttered, leaning down to kiss her and she laughed against his lips. “But I’m your weirdo,” she retorted and he nodded, reaching down to gently tap her on the butt. “Sure are,” he grinned. “Now come on, you go get your weirdo pajamas on, too.” She did as he asked, disappearing into their bedroom to put on the onesie she’d gotten for herself. She’d planned to surprise Kurt and Bee with them on Christmas morning, but figured this was a good reason to move up her plans. When she returned to the living room, Kurt had zipped up his own onesie and was stashing away the box and wrapping paper it had come in. Right on cue, they heard little footsteps behind them and turned to see Bethany padding down the hallway, rubbing her eyes. She stopped as she saw them and gasped, her eyes widening and smile growing as she took in their outfits. Jane and Kurt turned towards each other and then back to Bethany, throwing out their arms as they yelled in unison, “surprise!” Bethany’s jaw dropped as she looked over to the half-empty tree and the dark, night sky outside the window. “Is it..is it Christmas?” she asked, confused and Jane laughed, stepping forward to scoop her up into her arms. “Not yet, Bee,” she said, turning towards Kurt. “But we thought we could have a Christmas pajama party for decorating the tree!” Bethany’s eyes scanned up and down her father’s tall frame, her eyes sparkling as she looked back up at him. “Daddy, your PJ’s are like mine!’ she cheered and Kurt laughed, spinning around to show them off. “Yep, just like yours!” he told her, any hesitation he’d had about this fading away as he saw her and Jane’s smiles. “Why don’t you go get yours so we match?” Bethany nodded excitedly and squirmed until Jane set her down, racing back towards her bedroom. Kurt stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Jane’s shoulders, dipping his lips down towards her ear. He brushed his lips against her jaw and then against the side of her head, whispering in her ear, “thank you.” She simply smiled and nodded, leaning against him as they listened to Bethany rummage around her suitcase in her room. After a few moments, they heard her gasp excitedly and Jane tilted her head back towards Kurt, grinning triumphantly. “Mission accomplished,” she whispered and he nodded, leaning down to press his lips to hers. They waited for Bethany to rejoin them, smiling as she skipped back into the living room with her hands behind her back. “Whatcha got there, Bee?” Kurt asked innocently, kneeling down to greet her as she reached them. She pulled her hands out from behind her back and held them out towards him, a small box cradled between them. “Surprise!” she exclaimed, beaming as Jane kneeled down to join them. “For us?” Jane asked and Bethany nodded, handing the box to Jane. She watched as Jane opened the box and held it out for Kurt to reach inside and pull out the surprise ornament. Kurt held it carefully in his hands, turning it around for them to look at it. “Wow, Bee,” he whispered, gently brushing his thumb across the surface. “So we can always be together at Christmas!” she said proudly and Kurt nodded, blinking back his tears as he reached out and wrapped his arm around his little girl’s waist. Jane reached to take the ornament from him and he wrapped his other arm around her, pulling them both towards him. Bethany had drawn the three of them together on the ornament, along with a Christmas tree and some snowflakes, covering the ornament in silver glitter, which Kurt and Jane realized was now covering all three of them. “Thank you so much, Bee,” Jane whispered, leaning over to kiss the top of her head. “That is such a special surprise ornament.” Bethany grinned as she looked down at the ornament, reaching out to take it from Jane. “Can we put it on the tree?” she asked, holding it carefully in her hands. Kurt nodded and leaned forward to press a kiss to her cheek before standing up and hoisting her onto his hip. “We sure can,” he said, taking Jane’s hand and leading them all over to their tree. They waited patiently as Bethany found just the right spot for their ornament, Kurt holding her up as she placed it on the branch. She snuggled back into his chest once it was in place, with Jane stepping into Kurt’s side as they admired it together. “Perfect,” she whispered, looking at the ornament before she tilted her head back towards Kurt and brought her hand up to rest on Bethany’s back. “Just perfect.”
