How can anyone not love Kurt Weller?
He is handsome, smart, strong, funny (if with the right people), charmish, tender, is mostly the good cop but if provoked also an incredibly bad cop, an amazing husband for his one True love Jane, and a great dad for his daughter Bethany (and for his stepdaughter Avery).
Yes he has his flaws, but honestly, who doesn’t?

A Review of 'The Boogeyman' (2023)
Tumblr media
I would not be hard-pressed to say watching The Boogeyman helped pass the time on a Monday morning matinee. 75% of the scare factor for this movie is the jump scares. I am usually annoyed by the shallow technique of the jump scare tactic in horror movies. I do appreciate the story's plot structure. It is the traditional three-act structure: set up a dilemma, play tug of war with the conflict and the villain, and then end the story with a face-off battle for a definitive conflict resolution. David Dastmalchian gave a fantastic performance as a bit character in the first act, whose sole purpose is to introduce the story's primary conflict. From a broad view, the movie is enjoyable to watch. But I wouldn't consider it an all-time favorite horror movie or anything comparable.
This film is adapted from a short story by Stephen King, a well-known and successful author in the horror genre. The plot revolves around two sisters tormented by an evil presence after the tragic death of their mother in a car accident. The director, Rob Savage, has previously gained recognition for his found-footage horror film Host (2020), which was entirely filmed during the COVID-19 lockdown. The cast includes Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, and David Dastmalchian.
The Boogeyman is intended to be a psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. It's a refreshing departure from the typical jump-scare horror flicks and instead delves into deep themes of family, grief, and trauma. The film's sound design, cinematography, and editing are all expertly used to create an intense and claustrophobic atmosphere that will leave you uneasy. It also has several well-executed and unexpected scares, such as the Boogeyman's sudden appearances in the mirror, under the bed, and in the closet.
The acting performances in the movie are well done, particularly by the two young actresses who portray the sisters. Sophie Thatcher delivers a credible and touching performance as Sadie, a high school student who endeavors to protect her sister and cope with her grief. She portrays Sadie's bravery, vulnerability, and resoluteness as she confronts the Boogeyman and strives to save her family. Vivien Lyra Blair is endearing and poignant as Sawyer, a little girl who perceives things that are invisible to others. She depicts Sawyer's innocence, fear, and inquisitiveness as she interacts with the Boogeyman and tries to comprehend what is happening. Chris Messina also performs well as their father, who wrestles with his sorrow and culpability. He exhibits his fatherly love, anguish, and reluctance as he endeavors to aid his daughters and handle his job. As mentioned earlier, David Dastmalchian is eerie and menacing as Lester Billings, a patient of their father who introduces the Boogeyman into their lives. He portrays his character's insanity, desperation, and wickedness as he discloses his sinister secrets and motives.
The movie expertly balances fidelity to the source material with modern twists and alterations that elevate its cinematic quality. It delves deep into the Boogeyman's backstory, imbuing it with greater purpose and motivation beyond being a random monster. The film reveals the Boogeyman to be a proxy of its victims' collective fear and anguish. It introduces new characters and subplots that add depth to the narrative, delivering unexpected surprises. Notably, Dr. Weller, Sadie's friend Bethany, and Lester's wife all play crucial roles.

Ok, I just found this on Pinterest, and I don't even know who I should credit for this, but look how cute!
I love how they all are just looking at the baby 🥰
I know they aren't even in character yet. Still, I can totally see Tasha and Patty all smiling, talking to Bethany while doing baby voices, and talking a little bit with Allie about how big she is until Kurt arrives. Then they'll be like, "oh, yeah, the wedding", not because they forgot about it, but because the baby took all their attention.

Sunshine (Jeller + Bethany) - one shot
a/n: I missed a scene from Jeller with Bethany during the wedding, so I decided to write that. I hope you like it!
-
I took a few steps away from Jane so that I would lose sight of her. It was our marriage, and I was as close as possible to her, still stuck with all that moment, but it was only a moment with our friends that I lost sight of her.
It was not long before I noticed this, and then my gaze ran across the garden. Allie was on her back talking to Dr. Hirst, Stuart was seeing something on Reade's cell phone, and Patterson was laughing wildly about something as he moved Sawyer's hair.
I thought that probably Jane was holding Tasha somewhere out of my sight, along with Sarah and Roman, who now saw themselves as brothers in the same way that Jane and I saw them.
I took advantage of the moment of distraction of all and entered the house that was next to the garden where the celebrations were taking place, in search of a moment alone. Most of the place was still in that romantic mood, but I was looking for an isolated place.
I had spent so much time not thinking about love and worried about everyone around me that I never thought it would ever be love. But today, there after receiving the yes of the woman of my life, I knew that I had found it forever.
It was funny to think that I had found her in the most worrying moments of my life. She was the hurricane of my life, but it was also the home of peace that I never thought I would ever experience. She took away all my doubts and confirmed all my certainties. She silently questioned who I was, and made me an even better man. That was to be the love of my life.
My thoughts were interrupted as I slowly heard a soft voice or something almost inaudible. The sound came from the next room and I then slowly went through the compartments.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray." My favorite voice sang out of tune. It was Jane singing with Bethany in her arms, a scene to take my breath away and throw in the bottom of the pit any stone from the wall of my heart.
"You'll never know dear, how much I love you," I continued, which frightened her quickly and made her look at me, but then she smiled and turned her eyes to the baby.
"Please do not take my sunshine away," Jane finished. Bethany, so little, understood nothing of what Jane was singing in the song of Johny Cash, but she smiled in a way that reminded me when Allie said that she kicked whenever she heard me sing that same song.
I hugged her from behind so the three of us were there, dancing and humming that song, until Bethany started to kick, signaling that her moment of calm was over. Jane and I laughed and she then took the child from her lap and placed it at shoulder height, which gave me a better view of her.
"So you were up here with mama Jane, huh?" I said looking at my little girl and she and Jane laughed.
"I had danced with almost everyone, but not with her so I thought it was appropriate to come here to do this," Jane said.
"Forgot to call me?" I said with a look of contempt and she then looked at me in a provocative way.
"Can not I have a moment alone with your daughter, man?"
"Of course you can," I said, and then I kissed her, which made Bethany laugh a delicious laugh.
"Apparently even she likes me to kiss you." I bent and caught Bethany in my arms, stroking her back and sniffing her scent of baby. She was already holding her hand in her mouth and staring at me. There was no way I could not fall in love with such a small, handsome being and watching her, next to Jane, I felt my heart even smile at that moment. I lifted my head with a smile to look at my wife and then she teased me again, kissing me one more time.
"So I guess you should do it more often."
I did, and then she and Bethany smiled again. The baby, as crazy about Jane as I was, held out her unoccupied arm as we approached, and she picked it up again with a care and affection born of one who loved her very much. I kissed my two girls and looked at them and deep inside felt something I had never felt before: I had a family, a family of mine and not just one of which I belonged.

3x07 Rambling
I love so much about this episode:
The idea that Kurt thinks Sarah might plausibly send a black-wrapped Christmas present to Bethany. For some reason, that cracks me up, especially because Sarah is the most optimistic, cheerful person on the show.
Jane has cut her hair shorter! Kurt must be really off his game if he's not commenting on that, though maybe the writers thought since they only had that exchange in 3x02, it would be too repetitive. But it goes nicely with the theme of 'the more committed to the FBI she is, the shorter her hair is' - now the team are all on the same page re: Hirst, and Reade has come into the fold, time for a haircut.
Allie is perfect, as usual. She gives no fucks about hurting people's feelings, she's ALL about the truth, including telling the team they should feel bad about involving her in their kidnapping plans, and potentially getting her dragged down with them. Then she has the amazing line 'you just lost half of your tac team to brunch' and demands to come with them to the lab. And finally, she tells Kurt that his sympathising with Van Gogh's secretiveness is 'such a Kurt Weller response' and tells him that dishonesty ruins marriages, to which I say FUCK YEAH, ALLIE, YOU TELL HIM!
It almost seems like Allie has guessed Kurt is keeping something from Jane, but I think that if she had, she'd call him on it, because Allie doesn't do subtle. Her concern and telling Kurt that he can breathe, that he's not going to lose Jane again - that's really sweet.
The scene where Van Gogh messes up Stuart's apartment to make it look like a home invasion is so close to the scene where Tasha does the same at Crawford's lawyer's place in season 4. Right down to the tears. I feel so bad for both of them.
Kurt's rat fear is just so great. Sully is fantastic from the moment the lights go on, with his eyes darting about from rat to rat. Now I'm just imagining Bethany getting pet rats. 😁
I'm also kind of impressed that they managed two and a half seasons without Kurt's rat fear being exposed - as FBI agents they've been to some pretty gross places that you'd imagine had rats in them.
Hirst's brunch with Reade and Zapata is technically a lunch, since it happens at 1pm... I love Hirst, she came across as such a warm, sympathetic person at first, especially on the wedding DVD, but she gets so cold and snake-like when she's putting on the pressure.
I love the song at the end of the episode, too. Don't know what it is, but I love it. :)
Tasha giving Reade a hard time about planning to get Meg a food processor for her birthday is great. You should feel bad, Reade. XD
And of course, the morse code/horse code line and Jane's reaction - so perfect.

“They have a really great blended family. You’re going to see the baby a couple of times this year. Allie is still in their lives in a positive way, there’s no kind of animosity or love triangle or anything. Allie’s with her man, and Weller is with Jane. And Jane really feels like... a third parent to little Baby Bethany.”
 - Martin Gero at NYCC on October 8, 2017
So this is great news IMO. I know Allie gets a lot of hate in this fandom, for reasons that I don’t entirely understand. And while I am still kind of upset at what the writers did with her character in season two, I have a lot of affection for her. I was really afraid that they’d make her a bad guy this year and have her threaten to cut off Kurt’s custody of their daughter, and I am so happy that that seems unlikely.
