I went for a surf last week at Bethune Beach and it got me thinking about the history of that area. I had always heard that that area was named after Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of Bethune Cookman College. I also heard that it was the only beach in the area that African Americans were allowed to go to back in the day. Looking for more information I decided to do a little searching and reading. I came across the website for the Bethune Beach Property Owners Association that I was hoping would shed a little light on the subject for me. However, I was slightly disappointed. Other than confirming the naming rights to the area, there was nothing in the history about it’s true roots. Disappointing that a website designed to promote the official history of the area decided to omit the truth about it’s inception. They make it seem like it was a fairly innocuous acquisition by the Bethune Corporation in 1939 of 189 acres of land, divided up into lots, and sold to individuals for vacation homes.

Luckily I came across this Sun Sentinel article that had information that was exactly what I was looking for. According to this article Bethune Beach was “one of the few beaches open to and owned by blacks before integration”. Interestingly enough there was only 3 beaches open to African Americans in the entire state of Florida at the time: Bethune Beach, American Beach in Jacksonville, and Butler Beach near St. Augustine. The tipping point of it’s foundation was in the beginning of the 1940′s when white police officers and white citizens had a group of African Americans escorted off the “whites only” beach. Could you imagine?

I sent an email to the president of the Bethune Beach Association and asked why the omission of the bulk of their history. There’s a massive amount of information of Turtle Mound and the Timucuan tribe, but just an obscure amount of information regarding Bethune Beach. It’s not called “Turtle Mound Beach” or “Timucuan Beach”. I just think, in the spirit of transparency, maybe history should be accurately told as to not repeat itself.
