It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Gena Rowlands, a truly beloved figure in the world of independent film in the USA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The subject displays blonde hair, frosty blue eyes and a seductive smile. Gena Rowlands was regarded as the preeminent figure in American independent film. Gena Rowlands is a subtle and delicate performer, a true wonder. She is forthright in her communication. Furthermore, she demonstrated an unwavering resolve. In a statement made prior to his death in 1989, director John Cassavetes asserted that Rowlands was capable of performing any role. The couple were married for over three decades, during which time Cassavetes acted as Rowland's discoverer and most ardent supporter. With the release of highly successful films such as A Woman Under the Influence (1974) and Gloria (1980), he elevated her to the status of an award-winning and Oscar-nominated star. Rowlands has now passed away at the age of 94.
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences bestowed an honorary Academy Award upon the then 85-year-old actress in recognition of her lifetime achievements. Her son presented her with the award at the ceremony.
Over the course of her career, Rowlands was nominated on eight occasions for the most significant US television accolade, the Emmy. She was awarded the prize on three occasions: in 1987 for her performance in The Betty Ford Story, in 1992 for her role in Face of a Stranger, and in 2003 for her performance in Hysterical Blindness.

Dark Skin Directory
I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...
EDIT: Okay, so the one that I did for BFCD does not work, so I am posting this one to see if it works, and if not, they’ll both be WIPS until I have the time to repair them
For the purposes of this list and on this page, whenever I say “dark skinned,” I mean a traditional brown crayon or darker. I grew up around Black people, so the words “dark skinned” do not mean the same thing to me as it do to nonblacks.

Teen Prodigy Slays the Competition by Sophie Powell
AT THE DEPRAC NATIONAL FENCING COMPETITION this past weekend, there were many surprises, the biggest being the gold overall medal going to previously unranked teen Anthony Lockwood, of [–], London (no agency).
Lockwood’s first match of the day saw him take on Rosie [–] of Tendy & Sons. The two athletes launched many of their attacks almost simultaneously, giving the advantage to whoever landed the touch first. After the third three-minute round, the match ended with Lockwood claiming a 15-11 victory.
A few hours and 2 matches later (winning easily against Betty Woodhouse of Bunchurch and Claire Bailey of Atkins and Armstrong), Lockwood stepped onto the strip again for his fourth-round match against [–] Rowland from Allwood and [–].
In the second round both athletes became extremely cautious and no [–] were [–] for the first minute, [–] gaining both opponents red cards for inactivity. With only a short time left in the round, Lockwood launched two successful attacks to bring the score to 4-1.
In the final round, Rowland was more active and both fencers launched several successful attacks to get in as many touches as possible. Rowland kept attempting to back Lockwood to the back of the strip, but with a 3 point lead, Lockwood gained more confidence and remained unfazed by his opponent’s [–] attacks. Lockwood kept pushing forward [–] his opponent’s style and claimed another victory with a final score of 18-7 and moved on to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Lockwood faced off against Catherine Biddle from Sinclair and Soanes. After a slow start with further warnings of inactivity from the referee, within the last minute of the first round, Lockwood lunged and managed to land a touch, ending the first round with a score of 2-1. The second round was far more exciting for the audience, where the pair clashed in the middle of the strip for the full 3 minutes, and Lockwood ended up at the one point lead of 6-5. The third round ended with Lockwood taking the match by five points with a final score of 15-10.
For the final Lockwood took on a much older and more experienced Quill Kipps of Fittes Agency. From the off Lockwood pressured Kipps into backing up towards the end of the strip several times. Kipps attempted a few bold lunges but missed Lockwood each time.
Throughout the second round both athletes were on the offensive more often, with Kipps favouring a more steady advance and Lockwood utilising sudden lunges. Lockwood played even more aggressively in the third to keep Kipps under constant pressure. Kipps still managed to get multiple touches but Lockwood’s vigorous approach was effective and Kipps was unable to close the gap in time, ending the match at a very respectable 44-32.
Lockwood told the [–] that he is mentored by Nigel Sykes, but is yet to join an agency. It’ll be interesting to see where this teen goes next.

Veronica lobs the insult "peroxide blonde" for Betty with great frequency through the 50s and 60s -- the era of the Clairol ad slogan "Does she or doesn't she?" -- and it probably sneaks into the 70s,
OED's earliest evidence for peroxide blonde is from 1909, in the writing of H. Rowland.
But wait!
In fact this association goes back further than the 1930s. Consider this wry comment from one H Rowland in 1909: 'Men say they hate anything loud about a woman; it must be disgust that makes them always turn around to stare after a peroxide blonde.' The earliest references are not derogatory. But by 1903, the New York Times carried the comment 'I hate girls who make up. and most of these blondes are peroxides.' The peroxide blonde was becoming someone dangerous to know.
