Probably depends on when they went underground. Were they born in captivity, or did they get put there at a certain age? Like, when you know people who spent a long time in prison and based upon how young they were or how much happened in that space.

Or, if they were there because beforehand, they didn't learn certain things or have proper developments. People who go from like juvie to prison (my age), missed everything internet taking off and the creation and evolution of social media. So. Wouldn't know how to send an email, but would know where babies come from. Also, would forget how to behave in a grocery store, because that's such a different setting than seclusion.

If they're there their entire lives, in isolation, it's probably closer to kids who are neglected. Unless there's someone giving them information and lessons, they don't just pick up common knowledge on their own. In fact, sometimes, they don't even know basic self care like brushing teeth or using a toilet.

I said a lot to say that the evil agenda will have to do the work to program the isolated character to do precisely what is needed for the plot, because they are either a blank slate if they've been isolated their whole lives or they're not going to retain much outside of basics of their timeline after the trauma of being placed in isolation.

characters raised in isolation to fulfill some evil agenda is a very common trope but I'm always a little distracted wondering what massive gaps they have in their common knowledge. like. can he send an email? does he know where babies come from? how would he function in a grocery store?

The main problem with the books is that they're boring as fuck. As soon as I fell asleep in a book I set that thing aside and pulled the report or test outta my ass. The classics just too white for me. They're period pieces. I just simply didn't care as a teenager and cared less as an adult. And, I feel like there MUST be other books that get the same lessons across and aren't pages upon pages of whatever the fuck was happening in the book I failed by first test in Language Arts. Whatever lessons the books have, you're not gonna care about if you feel adverse to the author, but also if the shit is boring. The shit is boring, bruh.
