SONG OF THE WEEK: “I Like The Street”— I wrote this song after reflecting on my experiences riding a bicycle 20 miles a day on the wild streets of San Francisco, which I did as a “day job” off and on for about 10 years—a great way to work up a sweat for real. Sweat points to a rhythm under your skin and makes it glisten in the light. Sweat does not discriminate between burlap or satin, barkeep or ballerina. Lying makes people sweat. So does love. Jesus sweated drops of blood. Sweat carries the dust of disappointment and the heat of anticipation. This is Sweat Logic, a way of coping and seeing behind the masks that people wear in life. One day I was reflecting on that and, suddenly, a song sprang forth, with lyrics that are “AUTO-biographical.” This song is "my mind on bike."

After all that outdoor activity I am often incapable of speech (which , for an Irish person is a remarkable event). I've been watching some really good bike related viewing recently, two of whom I'd like to recommend.

PEDAL(2001): a DIY style look at bike messengers in New York in the 90s, with some very interesting characters. It's interesting to me how the ethos and philosophy of bike messengers if so often very similar, spanning decades and spread out around the world. This is available to watch on YouTube! For free!

Icarus(2017): An excellent watch on one man's first hand account of how to utilize and manipulate available doping options in professional cycling. His experience is filmed over the course of a year and tracks his improvement based on this doping. The medical side is overseen by the Russian doctor that was in charge of the Russian athletes for the Olympic games.  On Netflix.
