ALWAYS A P R I N C E S S

Once upon a time, in Carmen, lived a tenderhearted couple- Zaldy and Gemma Cabrezos. They were blessed with 5 lovely children- Zyra, Gerald, Wendell, Gezelle, and Zelaine. The couple treated their children as princes and princesses. Princess Zelaine grew up with the love and care of her family. She has a soft and white skin, and a shiny hair. When Princess Zelaine was 5 years old, he parents built their castle in NHA, Kauswagan and then they started to live there. Princess Zelaine studied in West City Central School. During her elementary days, she joined their band and became one of the cute little twirlers. Her family was very supportive of her.
"In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.” —Friedrich Nietzsche. A few years later, princess Zelaine attended high school at Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS). She was an honor student during her first and fourth year. She also joined different contests in their school and played as Sharpay of High School Musical during her 3rd year. Her parents worked very hard to provide all of the things that their children needed. But little did they know, their little princess was often times doleful for they cannot attend classroom meetings and school activities for her. But princess Zelaine understood her parents knowing that what they're doing is for them to have a cushy and affluent life.
True to that, in May 2015 princess Zelaine together with her sister, Gezelle, went to Hong Kong. It was her first time to travel abroad. They stayed in a skyscraper hotel overlooking the stupendous city. They went to Disney Land, Hong Kong Market, Clock Tower, Avenue of Stars, and Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. Then they crossed to Macau and visited the Ruins of St. Paul, the Venetican Macao, and some casinos. For princess Zelaine, this travel was her most unforgettable experience. She was so amazed by the very tall buildings.
Just like any other teenagers, princess Zelaine built friendships and relationships that were soon challenged. She was once in girl fights. But in the end, she still found true friends. Because of her sister's catastrophic love experiences, princess Zelaine has been prohibited to engage in relationships. At first she was okay with it, having crushes from afar and texting guys were enough. But it was not until a handsome and dashing prince from Nazareth came and swept her off her feet. She instantly fell in love with prince Paul. They had a secret relationship. But as the saying goes, "secrets are like smoke; you can't hold and hide it." Her family found out about her secret relationship which made them very furious. They demanded her to break up with him. But princess Zelaine felt that her love for prince Paul is greater than her fear for her family. That's why they still continued their secret relationship but they were more cautious this time. "I refuse to give up on us and I'll always fight for us. I'll fight for what we have and for our love," said princess Zelaine.
Soon, princess Zelaine graduated high school. At first, she took an entrance exam in Xavier University with a course of International Studies for she wants to learn new languages. Unfortunately, she didn't pass the exam. Then because of her relatives who are teachers, she decided to take up Education instead in Liceo de Cagayan University. Princess Zelaine is pressured by her family to do well in school.
On the other hand, princess Zelaine celebrated her debut lavishly. Her family, specifically her sister, spent a big amount of money for her. It was held at a hotel and she wore a knockout gown made for a princess. Everything was precious just like how she dreamed it to be. It was her most memorable birthday for she felt like a real royalty having a banquet in a castle.
Princess Zelaine is working really hard to achieve her dreams which are to travel around the world and to pay off the hard work of her family. Now that her father passed away, this pushed her more to make her father be proud of her. Throughout everything, princess Zelaine never forgets God. She believes that with His guidance, she will make it. "I will succeed in God's time," she said.
Zelaine May T. Cabrezos- a princess to her family, to her friends, to her prince, and to God.

DREAM CHASER✨

In this amazing world, God created all of us equally unique that has different traits. Each individual has talents, skills, intelligence, beauty and a good heart. It depends on us how were going to use it, protect, and slays it in a virtuous way. Since young, we have the desires, passion and dreams in life that we want to achieve. Our family and parents are the first one who support us to reach our goals in life. Every struggle, obstacles, and failures that we encounter in life was just a challenge on how were going to face and resolve it. This is just a progress on how we can be a goal achiever for us to become a better version of ourselves and to show what person are we and foremost how big your faith is and trust in our God Almighty.
Talking about this dreamer girl. She’s a dreamer, a doer, a thinker and she sees possibility everywhere. Her character defines a goal achiever, a heart strong and a fighter and that resembles for who she is. She is a girl who wants to become rich, get an own house, car, travel the whole beautiful world, payback to the hard work of her family and of course to be successful in her career. She have a big faith in God and always put God first in her everyday life.
——Her story starts here...
May 9, 1998 in the City of Golden Friendship at Canitoan Cagayan de Oro City. The happily married couple Emiliano and Floria Lanzaderas were blessed with a cute, angelic face and gifted baby girl. Her brothers Glend, Jaymar, Emiliano III and only sister Diane are very happy to have their younger sister in the family. Her favorite things to do is to read books and stories, to watch movies and to listen to music. When she was still young, she already have the potentials of being an intelligent girl.
She studied in Elementary at Canitoan Elementary School. She’s began to be an active student girl in her academic excellence, she belongs to the FL (Fast Learner) class, and joining some contest like MTAP and leadership organization. She became the Salutatorian in their school and that could be proud of to everyone , but when she became the salutatorian she felt that her parents are disappointed on her. She got jealous every time her classmates and friends are very happy with their family whatever achievements they got.
And——
This starts her journey reaching High School at Cagayan de Oro National High School (CDONHS). Most of the time, when she joins contests in school her parents doesn’t go to support her. Then, she met her best friend named Shiella and other group of friends named Kryzel, Cessy, Mitzi, and Kathlyn. During her freshmen to junior year- she didn’t gave so much effort to top the class. She thought that no matter how she do, it will never be enough for her family. As a result, she was not an honor student from 1st year to 3rd year but she’s active in joining Academic contest. She also entered the beauty and intellectual battle, in her junior year she joined United Nation as the representative of their section and guess what? she almost got the bacon! She won as the “2nd runner up” then, she also joined Miss Intramural and she break a leg- she did it, she won as “Miss Intramural in CDONHS”. But upon reaching 4th year High school, her parents told her to strive hard to get a scholarship for college because they can’t afford to send her to a University. Liked a dark horse, she worked and strived hard and tried to outrun the top students in her batch. The fruit of her labor- She graduated as 6th honorable mention and was granted full scholarship from Liceo de Cagayan University. For her honestly, she never thought of studying in LDCU, so she looked for scholarship programs offered by a different school and government. But she didn’t made it, so her only choice was LDCU School, and at that time she thought that God has a good reason why she let her study in LDCU.
When it comes into her love life, her parents are conservatively strict to the point that there is no boyfriend policy because for them having a boyfriend is just a conflict to her studies and grades. But every time she get good grades they let her to date someone. Talking about her past puppy love to the guys who broke her heart, she became a strong independent woman because of those heart aches she learned a lot of lesson and realized everything that she is worth it and deserve to be love by someone. Now, she’s focusing herself to build a strong relationship with her supporting, understanding and sweet kind hearted boyfriend Mike. They always put God as the center of their relationship.
Turning college, she want to take a course “Broadcasting” when she was in her 4th year high school, she do broadcasting and want to become a Broadcaster in the future- broadcasting was her favorite thing to do and also it can enhance skills and boost confidence to herself speaking in public, but her mother disagree to her to take that course because it’s very dangerous for her when she will be working it in the future, so she decided to took the course Education and taking Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English. English because that’s also her skills and favorite subject and she loves speaking in public. Today, she proved to everybody that she will continue her journey. She maintain her scholarship and be active in her academic excellence, also continue for being a dean’s lister student. She also leveled up her skills in performing on the theatre stage in High School Musical as she played the role of Kelsey and also she let her Hosting skills be recognized.
Now that she’s in 4th year college, how many months today she will get her diploma and that would be one of her greatest achievements in life. Even though she have encountered numerous times of ups and downs she still conquer everything and be productive to show every one that God is there to guide her to lead into the right path and to reach her goals in life.
She is the very talented, the brainy one, a big follower of God, a dreamer and achiever. Quoted that: “Everything happens for a reason, no matter how big, how small always thank God”. She is the compassionate goal achiever, dream chaser, heart strong and a fighter. She is none other than, the one and only MAY ANN ABALDE LANZADERAS.

This week, Judicial Watch received 552 pages from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These documents include the initial grant application, biosketches, budgets and annual reports to the NIH from EcoHealth Alliance. They describe the specific aims of the project, which include creating mutant viruses SARS (and MERS viruses) “to better predict the capacity of our CoVs [coronaviruses] to infect people.”

HAIL TO THE NEW QUEEN!
“A thousand stories untold, yet one of them is to be told. It’s an exigency of a dreamer who continued believing that there is likelihood if you just clench on with the rope tighter. That there is sun after every storm, and that love comes in various form. That in the runway of life it’s hard to walk, and that chasing your dream is the most challenging catwalk.”
Indeed, life for him is a stage filled with underdogs and queens. Is he an underdog? The hailed “Queen” perhaps? Only the greatest “Judge” will know.
I want to take everyone back to the placid evening of July 13, 1997, when the silver moon is beaming gloriously and was jovial to gleam to the new born child of Mr. Gerardo E. Carpio and Mrs. Beverly P. Carpio. It was a healthy baby boy and was the sixth child in the family alongside with Mark Gerard, Mie Gerardin, Maria Gretta, Marx Gerr and Muriel Grace. The house is now a delighted home because of this exquisite and fragile gift.
As days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and months turned into years, this child is now ready to make a big step to school and was enrolled in Macanhan Elementary School to pursue his six-year primary education. After conquering all the “Chinese garter” years, he is now ready to take a full crack in the pace of his fast changing learning environment. There he is, sitting in the corner, timid and silent, but his diligence, prudence, and wise answers gave pride to Carmen National High School, where he graduated as Fifth honors in his batch.
But sometimes in a students’ journey, we cannot evade to hear comments and indescribable criticisms towards us and towards our selfless achievements, and what’s more throbbing is when these comments are coming from the mouths of our parents who were never appeased of what we have become. Pretty hurts isn’t it? But the hero of this bio-sketch never faltered, he didn’t let the words swallow him whole, he called to his pillow and cried out all the frustrations, and the next morning he fueled his engine and felt brave once again. He used his full bright smile as a façade of his sequestered soul.
Our dreamer is finally in college and on the track of shaping his career as a future teacher and educator. He is currently attending school at Liceo de Cagayan University where he found treasures that he thought would be impossible to find. The first treasure that made him aspire more is when he became one of the City College Scholarship Program grantees of the city of Cagayan de Oro. In his stay at the university, it was fate who decided when he met his best friends in the person of Nap, Cloie, Levi, Meagan, Ivy, Arianne, Faith, Kate and Charmaine, together with these people, he experienced how to be someone amidst the middling society.
In class, he was pronounced as a handsome, clean, and well-groomed man, who in spite of being a steadfast member of the LGBTQ federation, he’s still able to make girls stick around him. Obviously, he is hardworking and a good life coach, and I tell you he is fun to be with, take it from his gorgeous best friends and classmates. One of the best things that you’ll experience when you’re around this person is that he always talks about beauty pageants, may it be local, national, or international, and he knows it all. I don’t know but, the love for “Beauty Contests” is already streaming in his veins. He also enjoys watching Volleyball and Basketball during his free time and would love to indulge himself in chatting and posting things through his Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts. I remember once when he told me in one of our casual conversations that it is sometimes good to keep our pride so that people (people he hates) will also realize that they’re not as exciting as they think they are, he can be a lion when provoked too.
Now, he is at the peak of his tertiary education, and none of these accomplishments would have happened if he didn’t live his life straight to the path of his dreams. His works alone can define how great of a person he is. He’s not just a friend nor a classmate, not just a typical missossologist nor a volleyball fanatic. He is the “Queen” of his victorious kingdom, with a throne made of stone, his scepter the moon, his crown the sun, and his cape embellished with stars. He is Mr.Kyrnyx Zeus Porras Carpio.

I started working on a grant at the beginning of this week by getting the "annoying" parts out of the way. "Annoying" meaning the parts that are kind of more administrative (like listing facility and equipment, project summaries, etc.) and basically the not exciting part of grants (biosketch) but also not the stressful parts (aims, research strategy, training plan). For those of you who may have recognized those section names, yes, I'm applying to the NIH F31.
This has been my method of "productive procrastination" since high school and it always surprises me how well it works. In a week I've written about HALF of this proposal (half by required sections, not page count) and I'm really proud of myself! Also this grant is due in April and I'm very glad that I'm getting a head start. Plus, I'll feel much better about contacting the program directors and meeting with the faculty and researchers I'm hoping will write me letters of support. Not to mention being able to share my project idea and outline with those I'm asking for a reference letter from.
I've also been calling this the "stupid draft" (a piece of advice I saw on here sometime last semester) and it has helped SO much. I don't feel the pressure of having everything I write down be perfect and completely thought out. I have 3 more months to work on this and I'm already half way done with the first version of my proposal after a week. Not to mention this is the first large scale grant I'm writing and I have two co-sponsors that I'll be waiting back and forth with, not to mention administrative staff, and other collaborators. I'm also on track to finish the entire thing within a week and a half. Like what.
I have all my material orders placed so that after the new year I can get started on making and testing my system so I will have appropriate preliminary data for the proposal and (my advisor suggests) enough information for my first manuscript. I'm not sure how I got here, especially when I spent most of this summer miserable and confused and lost in an existential cloud and decided that if I wasn't happy come November I would master out of my PhD. But I'm very glad that I have a direction and that even through all the bullshit I'm excited about where this may take me and my career.

Hi Julia, I'm a second year grad student and I'm trying to juggle quals(write and orally defend an F31 application) and finishing up paper revisions for the next month. How do I schedule time for reading papers, writing my exam, and finishing experiments for the paper (not to mention self care, bf time, friend time, exercise, chores....) Thanks, as always you are such a great resource/help/human!
Hi Anon!
Oh man I’ve definitely been there done that. My quals was the same format. And it was a difficult time! Juggling all those things and still doing them well (like, we gotta pass our quals) was not a walk in the park! This is what I did and still do to balance my million tasks (including time for self-care, chores, and relationships). I hope some of it will work for you too, or give you an idea for something to try that will work for you.
The short answer to everything: Schedule everything you need to do. Schedule it in advance, and down to the hour.
The long answers:
Writing (F31, paper revisions, etc):
First, break it down into doable tasks. Pretend you’re a professor teaching a class on writing an F31–what should the lectures/homework assignments be? For example, the F31 can be broken down into: Specific Aims page; Preliminary Data; Research Approach for Aim 1, 2, and 3; Biosketch, etc. Your manuscript can be broken down into Introduction, Methods, Results (which can be further broken down to each Figure), Discussion, Abstract, etc.
Then, plan out on a calendar (physical or electronic; I prefer Google Calendars) your due dates for those tasks. You may need to work backwards from the due date for the final thing (ie when your committee members need a copy of your F31 to read before your quals date, or when you want to submit your papers). For example, maybe next Friday you’d like to have a draft of your Specific Aims page done.
Don’t forget that editing counts as tasks! So if the first draft of Specific Aims page is due next Friday, and then you may decide to finish round 1 editing it on Monday.
Schedule in a weekly (or daily) time to write and treat it like a doctor’s appointment or class. This is probably the most important thing to do. Studies have shown that writing regularly, rather than writing when the “motivation” hits, yields more finished pieces. And doing things that are related to writing, such as literature searches and editing, still count as writing!
Have a writing buddy so you two can hold each other accountable, and also edit each other’s writings. Preferably this is someone in your cohort who is also working on their F31. Make your due dates the same so you can both edit each other’s work, and also schedule regular meet-ups to rant about writing :) Venting and bonding over shared experiences does help!
Experiments:
Plan your experiments using the same calendar for your writing tasks (so they don’t overlap). By doing this, you avoid scheduling too much or too little, and also you’ll be less likely to forget small tasks. I like to schedule in my experiment as soon as it’s planned so I don’t forget. Some people prefer to-do lists, but imo, a long to-do list is overwhelming; but a schedule that has all the tasks broken down helps me visualize that yes, I can do it.
Got some down-time during experiments? Use it wisely. I like scrolling through my phone as much as the next person during my 5 min washes, but when it’s crunch-time, I bring my laptop into the lab with me and try to multitask. If I have 5x 5min washes during western blots, that’s almost half-an-hour of glorious time to use!
Ask for help when you need it (including delegating tasks to other people). A lab is a team, and teams can only function if we all help each other when someone needs it. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s encouraged to ask for help. If anything, it’s better for the experiment and thus the science, so it’s in everyone’s best interest to help one another in the lab!
Plan your experiments really really well to save time. Running the right controls, conditions, and combos not only makes the results more robust, but it can save a lot of time, energy, and $$. There’s nothing worse than having to re-run a huge experiment because the correct controls weren’t included. I always like to run my experimental set-up by my PI or lab manager to make sure it’s sound.
Reading:
Schedule in your reading time too and have a summary sheet. And to help you not have to re-read the same paper over and over because you forgot the details–have a summary sheet attached to the paper with all the important goodies. Or in my case, I just write all those things down in the margins of the first page.
Save all your readings in an electronic works cited program for easy access if you need to cite it later for your papers or F31. I use and love Mendeley (which also gives you the option to take notes on the paper, add tags, etc). It even has a browser plug-in so you can save a paper you find online directly, as well as a Word Doc module-thingy so you can automatically make a works cited page (and do in-text citations). I highly recommend it if you haven’t used it already. EndNote does the same stuff but costs $$$.
Read smart, not hard. If it’s a paper on something you’re already familiar with, skip the Intro and Methods and text of Results and just look at the Figures and Figure Legends. That’s all the info you need right there!
Self-care, chores, and relationships:
Schedule it in your calendar! If you’re wondering if I literally schedule everything in my life, the answer is yep. I schedule in when I’m gonna go grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, hanging out with friends, etc. That way I know I have time to do it, and I also actually do it. If you’re having trouble maintaining a self-care routine, I would schedule that in too! It also takes away the feeling of “guilt” of taking time for yourself when you know you’ve planned well for it.
When I was at my busiest, I also scheduled a once a week “date-night” with my now-husband-then-boyfriend. It was every Wednesday evening that was just for us–no work, no chores, etc. I have another point of advice for maintaining a good relationship with your significant during something as busy and stressful as grad school.
For more advice on organizing, check out my #organizing-advice tag here!
Yepppp google calendar is my lifeline. I just need that, my heart, and my liver, and I’m good.
I hope that helps! Good luck on your F31 and your quals!!!
