Needless to say, he will be duly spoiled this evening! I only wish I had had more time to plan a party…though there’s nothing I’m really better at, is there?

2018 VoicePlay spring roundup — friends, families, fun, and fear

A busy winter for the VoicePlay boys rolled into a slightly more relaxed spring. Between various road trips and recording sessions, they made sure to spend some time with loved ones and savor their accomplisments.

They started the season by celebrating another milestone on their YouTube page.

3, 2, 1, Let's jam!

The boys kicked off their spring travels with a trip to northwest Arkansas for the VoiceJam A Cappella Festival. In between two days of workshops for high school, collegiate, and community groups, they headlined a concert on Friday night.

In addition to reuniting with Deke Sharon once again, they also got to see their friend Chris Diaz from The Exchange, who was the director of the only high school group selected for the festival's competition that year.

While they were there, J.None was presented with a card containing messages collected from fans around the world to celebrate him officially joining the group.

After the festival, the guys had a couple days at home to work on other projects. If you've ever wondered how Layne comes up with his various percussion noises and deft beats, sometimes they happen just to pass the time while he's commuting.

Hey, lady!

For the second week of April, the guys met up with Rachel Potter to perform at a series of private events, including a corporate gig in Hartford, CT. Since VoicePlay already had six collaborations with Rachel in their catalogue, and several more with other ladies whose parts she could learn, they had the makings of quite a setlist for those shows.

Five years after they released their "Trouble mashup" video and he's still got it down.

Chickens and bergens and bugs, oh my!

During their next few days at home, they packed in some family-friendly fun. First, the Castelluccis hosted William's first birthday party, complete with a barnyard petting zoo.

A few days later, the boys met up at a local studio to film their next music video for a song about perseverance from the Trolls movie.

Round and round

Then it was time for a swing through the mid-Atlantic states. They started in central Pennsylvania, dipped down to Washington, DC, then hustled back up to Long Island, NY.

Later, dudes!

The last weekend of April marked Earl's final performance as Crush the turtle in the live Finding Nemo show at Disney World. To celebrate the occasion, Layne and Cyndi took Doris to see the show in the morning, then the four of them spent the afternoon at the Animal Kingdom.

A couple days later, VoicePlay scooped up Max Herskovitz to fill in for Layne on a quick cruise to the Bahamas.

Come play with us

While the others were away, Layne and Tony worked on a couple of upcoming PattyCake videos featuring superheroes, getting one ready to release and the next ready to film. Once their buddies were back on dry land, they lured J.None into their "Unexpected Musicals" series with the role of Black Panther and a tasty rap verse in their MCU video.

The day after that, VoicePlay gathered up some family members and headed to a nearby farm to film the video for their cover of Johnny Cash's "Daddy Sang Bass".

Side quests

The next week, J.None popped up to Tennessee for a couple days of concentrated vocal coaching (and a little sightseeing). It's important to keep honing and expanding your skills, particularly in creative fields.

On the following weekend, family and friends gathered to celebrate Doris Stein's second birthday party. They had a fiesta theme, and a bounce house that was a big hit with the kid of honor.

Layne, Cyndi, and the girls had also created another family music video for the occasion, this time to "BFF" from the SpongeBob musical, which they'd seen on Broadway while they were in New York for the Total Vocal concert.

A few days later, VoicePlay teamed up with one of J.None's other groups, Paradigm Party Band, and a few kids of their acquaintence to perform at a private event.

Teamwork makes the dream work

The next week, the boys returned to the studio to film their next "Aca Top 10" countdown featuring the songs of Disney sidekicks.

They finished off their video filming for the spring with a location shoot at an abandoned sawmill, where they created their own scene from an action movie, complete with a Panic! at the Disco medley as a soundtrack.

"This is Piñata Island. It's the most incredible place in the world, where living piñata roam wild. In the middle of the island is Piñata Central. It's the place where piñata packed with candy go so they can be sent to parties all over the world.

Around Piñata Central are lots of gardens and the people who live on Piñata Island learned how to care for the land so the wild piñata will stay in their gardens and fill up with candy. Candy-filled piñata can then be sent up to Piñata Central, so each party receives the piñata that suits it best.

Piñata love parties. When they break open it's like having 5 birthdays all at once! After the part the piñata return to Piñata Island to fill up with candy and go to the next party!

This is an amazing island and my garden was the most amazing place on this island. I was famous here, but some PEST, er. . . took a dislike to me. To make a long story short all my hard work was ruined! I often wish that I were still young and strong enough to put the garden back in order, but those days are gone. Now the garden is yours and you're facing a challenge that even I might not be able to beat."

Chapter 2 (lvl 4 unlock)

"My name is Jardiniero (you've probably heard of me and if you haven't then you should have). I am the best gardener on Piñata Island, even after all this time there's no-one as good as I was. The land that you are messing about with used to be my garden.

I could make any plant grow and have any piñata stay in the garden... well apart from one piñata. Let's face it, if I couldn't get one, no-one else could. Now forget about all that, you've got a long way to go before you can even call this a garden.

Not long after I started the garden I met my wonderful wife. She worked on the ships which traded piñata for other goods. This was in the days when piñata only left the island by boat, Piñata Central hadn't been built then.

We got married the day that the first parts arrived to build Piñata Central. Mother (my wife) stayed on the island for a whole year and our first child was born. We called him Stardos. When stardos was 2 years old ny wife had to go back to sea. Piñata Central had installed the first Cannonata and there were requests for more piñata than ever before. My garden was already impressive and I could supply Piñata Central with really good piñata. With Mother gone I set about teaching little Stardos about piñata and making the best garden in Piñata Island history!"

Chapter 3 (lvl 7 Unlock)

"Little stardos grew quickly, just like my garden. I hired a helper called Lester to do some of the less skilful jobs in the garden. He was O.K. but he was always writing things down, drawing pictures and making 'plans'. I'd ask him to do something and he'd mess it up. I'd tell him how to do it properly and he'd write it all down. If he listened more and wrote less he might have been more useful. I also found him trying to take shortcuts, he'd miss out some important work just so he could pack an extra couple of piñata into a crate to Piñata Central.

Stardos was learning more and more everyday which was a good job because I found Lester messing around with sweets. One afternoon I was walking down past the Gooseberry bushes when I found Lester stirring red and black liquid which smelled SOUR. The secret of happy piñata is good candy. Its one shortcut you can't afford to take, start messing with the candy and who knows what effect it can have on a piñata!

I sacked Lester on the spot and little Stardos took over his job. Replaced by a little boy! Lester was quite angry about it, but I knew that Piñata Central only wanted the best piñata."

Chapter 4 (lvl 10 unlock)

"It was a good job Stardos was such a natural gardener (like his dad) because our little family soon had a new member. Our second child, Leafos was born during Mother's shore leave. Mother had to go back to sea very soon after Leafos was born. I brought up Leafos, continued Stardos' training and maintained my fantastic garden.

Leafos loved the garden so much she used to take flowers into her room at night. And it didn't stop there, she tried to take a Moozipan to bed one night and I had to draw the line.

The next day I gave her some paper and pencils and she started drawing all the things she saw in the garden, so she could put them up in her room. As she got older she wrote about the plants and piñata as well as drawing pictures. In next to no time her walls were covered with sketches and writing so we made a book to keep it all in. That was the start of my Journal where a record of everything in the garden was kept."

Chapter 5 (lvl 13 Unlock)

"In the old days I was an expert romance dancer. Mother was caught by surprise and my second daughter was born at sea. Mother named her after the migrating Storks that followed the ship.

Little Storkos spent all her early years on the ships with Mother. She was taught to read books by sailors and the comic books they collected. She grew up running around the decks pretending to have super powers. In the old days the Piñata had to fetch their own eggs from egg mountain. Lots of eggs were broken before the parents could roll them home. Piñata Central needed more piñatas to fill all the party requests and all the gardens (even mine) couldn't romance the piñatas fast enough. When Mother's ship docked, Storkos came to the garden. She played in the garden with Leafos and Stardos until one day, Storkos went missing. We called for her but she didn't show up until two bunnycombs had done their romance dance. Swooping down from Egg Mountain with her cloak flapping behind her, Storkos flew into the garden and gently dropped off the Bunnycomb egg safe and sound into the garden.

Overnight the piñata romance dance problem was solved. Every piñata knew that its' eggs would be delivered safely. Storkos had become Piñata Island's very own superhero."

Chapter 6 (lvl 16 Unlock)

"Piñata Central had a regular supply of common piñata types but my garden was the only place to get the really unusual piñata. I worked in the garden with my famy, Mother visited as often as she could. Everything was close to perfect and then my youngest son Sidos arrived, like the cherry on the cake.

Mother gave up sailing and we lived as a family in and around the garden for a short time. Sidos started to look after a Shellybean, then two and soon he had romanced them. He was very advanced for such a little boy (like a chip off the old block). Sidos and his family of Shellybeans continued to spend lots of time together.

When Piñata Central requested some Shellybean piñatas, Sidos happily sent the whole family. Sidos had taught the Shellybeans all sorts of tricks. Including the 'Tower of Shellybeans' and 'Shellybean burst'. Those little Shellybeans must have put on quite a show because when they came home there was suddenly a big demand for Shellybean piñatas. Obviously Sidos followed in his Dad's footsteps, becoming a piñata expert before he could talk properly."

"You probably heard I was the most successful gardener on Piñata Island, and that's not a boast it's a fact. Suddenly a rumor started that there was one piñata I hadn't managed to capture I laughed when people asked me about it but it was starting to bug me. Surely if someone could lure a Dragonache into their garden it was me.

I was lucky though my old helper Lester showed up one day with an old map he said he'd found. The map showed a route over the sea to a little island where a wise man was supposed to live. Lester said that this man was the last known person to ever see a Dragonache and that he held the secrets to attracting one to a garden.

I immediately started planning a trip. Mother would captain the ship to take us to the old man's island. Stardos was able to look after the garden with the help of Leafos. Storkos would keep an eye out for little Sidos until we returned. I was determined to prove once and for all that I was the greatest gardener that Piñata Island had ever seen!"

Look Beyond Polling - When folks who work in politics and elections assess the health of a candidate or party committee we look at much more than polling, including money raised, electoral track record, candidate charisma/performance, the competence of the campaign team, endorsements/local support, strength of arguments, life story and potential negatives/baggage. A central reason why I am much more optimistic than most right now is I am looking at a much broader set of inputs than polling, as Tom Bonier and I did in 2022. And what all of this tells me, drawing on my more than 30 years in the game, is that I would much rather be us than them.

The Polling We Have Is Not All Pointing In The Same Direction/Trump Does Not Lead - The central mistake made by many in 2022 is that they focused on the polling showing a red wave and dismissed polling which showed a close, competitive election. Remarkably, this is happening again this cycle, as yes there is polling showing Trump ahead right now, but there is also polling showing Biden leading and a close, competitive election. Almost all the polls taken in the last two weeks has the race within margin of error, meaning it’s close. Of those six polls find Biden leading. The Economist’s polling aggregator now has Biden ahead:

Senate polling is encouraging, and Dems now lead in 538’s Congressional Generic tracker - All of our Senate incumbents are holding. Gallego has had encouraging polling in recent weeks, as had Colin Allred. There is no bad polling for us right now in the Senate, and this week Dems jumped ahead in 538’s Congressional Generic tracker.

The way I am describing the race right now is like a basketball game where the score is tied after the first quarter. We have most of the game ahead of us, and a lot can and will happen. What is likely to happen is that the Biden campaign’s messages move voters, our coalition comes together, the rancid Trumpian shitshow continues to embarrass and struggle, we go to work and and turn a close race into a strong Democratic win. That’s what’s been happening all across the country, in election and election, since Dobbs. And that is what is likely to happen in November too.

But the key here, job #1, is for all of us to sign up for the Biden campaign by making a small donation today, and begin the process of planning what you are going to do to help him win. If we made 2 million phone calls into NY-3 in 5 weeks, imagine what we can do in the 7 battlegrounds over the next 8 months….

She invited people to join the campaign’s “I’m On Board” organizing effort. “As we jump into March, as we come out of Super Tuesday and the president’s State of the Union in the next couple of weeks, it will be a real opportunity to just remind voters of just what that choice, how important and how critical this election is, and really what everyone can do to get on board,” Rodriguez told the group on Feb. 29. While Biden has lacked the movement-like charisma of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, Democrats continue to enjoy significant state and local organizing muscle, largely through loose national networks of local progressive groups. Tom Suozzi, who recently outperformed polling by about eight points in a special election on New York’s Long Island, credits these groups with giving him a huge advantage, as have other campaigns in special elections in recent years. Hello again, tumblr!

It's 2023... and the last time I wrote in this was around New Years Eve for 2020. What's happened since then?

2020 - Hudson and I were living in NJ with my parents and older brother. I celebrated my 29th birthday at the bowling alley in Wallington with friends and cousins. I visit Gabby and Allyssa in DC right before hit the global pandemonium. My brother and I both worked in logistics operations at the time and were working in-person while many took to working from home. I remember being pretty envious of people who were able to be remote, and some who got to travel out of it. But it was such a twisted time, as so many were really holding it together in hospitals. Vaccinations were a thing, though a controversial topic apparently. I know people who lost people. My parents lost friends. Throughout that year I worked mostly. Later in the fall, began to spend time with just my cousins when dining opened back up-- outdoors and socially distanced of course. In the end tail of the summer I started doing online workouts with Chloe Ting, a youtuber, and ended up losing a deal of weight. My cousin Justine had gotten engaged-- the first of the younger cousins to get married (to follow in 2021). Work was rough, a tough crowd. I learned I wasn't good at managing a team. I left logistics ops (HR) to work in the NY office in the fall. Holidays were different that year. Everything was.

2021 - Things really started opening up. I celebrated my 30th birthday with Mitsuwa lunch and a workout at OT, and earlier my girlie cousins and I went to Domo Domo. In March, Shalane, Adrian and Simba moved to Vermont. I met my trainer, Anthony at 24H Fitness in April. Justine celebrated her bachelorette party in NYC (The Roxy, custom perfumes, Boucherie). Their wedding took place in Long Island. Kelly, Hudson and I visit Vermont later that summer for Adrian's proposal and officiating their civil ceremony. Hudson and I moved to an apartment in Brooklyn near East Williamsburg with Jelly (371 glory days). I dated a bunch (hello hinge and bumble). Mia visited in October! Jelly showed me the Brooklyn Museum, we went to NYBG, Hometown Hot Pot, Caffe Palermo (Cannoli King!), Anthony and Sons, Graham Ave... Ok I'm getting sad reminiscing on the wonderful memories. Tarot cards for fun, angel numbers, Case Kenny... I visit Austin a couple of times and Jelly joined me for one of them.

Oh and on NYE we celebrated in our pajamas and in our apartment, and woke up with Covid the next day. :)

2022 - I cried on the subway earlier in this year... lol. I celebrated my birthday by doing a boudoir shoot based in Greenpoint right off of McCarren. I met Francisco on hinge. I spent a lot of time between Long Island where he lived, Brooklyn, and NJ. I visit Seattle for the first time 2x since moving back/the pandemic. I started a new position as an HR Specialist focused on data. I was Shalane's best woman in her wedding and planned her bachelorette party in Cape Cod and bridal shower. Hudson was the dog of honor, too (wipes sweat from face). With the help of my family, I purchased a condo in North NJ and moved again, hopefully for a while. Later that year, Marcole and Jourdave became engaged. Cisco and I went on a few trips including one to visit his family in FL.

The last thing she wants to do—the summer before her senior year of high school, no less—is go on a cruise. Especially with her parents, younger brothers, and all the unspoken things between them since her older brother’s death so many years ago. Then Olivia meets Sebastian. He’s everything she’s charming, exciting, willing to take risks and run with them. For the first time, Olivia feels like she can have  fun... But there’s a lot bubbling up under the surface on this cruise, and when past secrets begin to come to light, Olivia must face all the truths that she’s ignored about herself, Sebastian, her brother, the past she  thought  she understood, and the future she’s always planned.

Plot:

Olivia Schwartz is Type A to the max. With her fifteen-year plan for how to become a cardiac doctor by the time she was 30, Olivia needed a way to stand out even more than her 99% percentile perfect SAT score. Entering a research contest with her friend, Olivia was flabbergasted when her parents sprung a last-minute cruise on her. Finding herself on what is essentially a floating city, The Regal Island SS NY Sea, is a seven-day cruise around the tropics, to give the family a long-needed vacation. This cruise is special due to its children zone which provides personal aid for Olivia’s younger twin brothers who are on the autism spectrum. Even though Olivia is probably more qualified, given the amount of research she has done for them. After losing her older brother days before her eleventh birthday from a heart attack, Olivia has become a doomsday bomb, always looking at the worst-case scenarios for the twins, and herself. Thus, why do her parents think she needs a cruise, even inviting her childhood friend, Jules along with her family - thinking this will be good for Olivia. Jules is not like Olivia expected, into drugs and always has a flask on her, Jules insists they find themselves a crew to hang out with for the week. Meeting the boys, Olivia was instantly drawn to Sebastian. A fellow music lover, Sebastian was a dreamboat of a guy, interested in Olivia for her brain, and allowed her to talk about Logan, the brother her parents seem to have forgotten. Sebastian challenged Olivia to take the risk and live in the moment, something Logan would have also wished for her to do. With a cruise expedition to a shipwreck site off of Antigua, a country Logan promised to take her to one day, Olivia realizes there's more than this ship can offer besides cheesy NYC stuff and expensive expeditions. It offers the opportunity for love, to live in the moment, to connect to her past, and experience heartbreak for the first time.

Thoughts:

Lauren Kay starts their writing career with this banger of a YA novel. Taken from the first-person perspective of Olivia, we get a courageous smarty-pants, who despite always thinking of the worst outcomes, is trying to give life a change. Within this story, we kind of get two Olivias; Olivia who is dealing with the emotions of her family life, and trying to ensure that she does not forget Logan, despite feeling like her family has. Using her future in a way to save him, as her reason for becoming a doctor is to figure out what killed Logan at such a young age. This family dynamic and family history made the story emotionally interesting, although I wish Kay gave us more Logan stories throughout the novel. It seems as if Olivia only reflected on him a bit throughout the novel, where more history about their relationship could have made it more emotionally devastating, as Kay kind of breezed through the depression that Olivia probably went through for years after Logan’s death. Plus the issue of feeling like her parents replace Logan with the twins? So much more emotion could have come out of that. Now the second Olivia (aka Liv) is our love-at-first-sight, romantic girl, who after three days on the cruise with Sebastian, was calculating how they could make a long-distance relationship work. My girl, Olivia, come on! You hardly know the guy, a statement Jules thankfully said throughout the novel. In a cringy way, we got to see Olivia fall hard for a guy she barely knows, and despite his winning personality, he made her open up while keeping himself closed. The love bomb was real, but so was Olivia not being able to read signs, and where it was entertaining to read, you honestly just felt bad for our naive girl for falling hard for a player. With these two Olivia storylines running parallel, it made the book an easy read, and where I do not dock Kay for these typical plot points, I just wish she dove more into the emotional side of the family more, and a little bit less on the perfection Sebastian in Olivia’s eyes.
