One thing you have to admire about Hannibal is his dedication. He took one (1) look at Will Graham, decided he would look good covered in blood, and then proceeded to spend the next 5ish years trying to make that happen as often possible.

I bought a roll of chicken netting to fence off my vegetable garden—which I haven't planted yet because it's been raining every single day for like two months and I didn't want my young tomato plants to rot, but the weather is finally improving. I'll plant my garden next week, and I wanted to trim the grass around it and clear the area of weeds, but then I remembered I have animals that can do this job.

So I opened the pasture in front of the (future) garden. Currently it looks like a long pile of dirt, because that's what it is (well, compost + llama manure + dirt)—but look how long it is! I'm feeling ambitious this year and I have quintupled the length of my initial hügelkultur mound.

You might be surprised to learn that Pirlouit was the first animal who noticed the opening in the fence and got out. It's not actually surprising because Pirou has a fresh grass-dar—but Pampe was very much surprised & vexed.

Everyone looked really happy to have access to this new little area!

Initially I thought I would be able to continue preparing the garden while they were eating, but I quickly realised I was too paranoid for that. I mean, it's Pampe vs. a small temporary fence meant for chickens. Enough said. I didn't dare to turn my back on her even for a minute, so I ended up just sitting in the grass next to them with a book, which was really nice.

Pampe decided to lie down in the grass to eat more comfortably, something Pirlouit still deeply disapproves of.

Poldine however thinks it's a brilliant idea.

Update: all my llamas are now horizontal, eating like three Roman emperors. Only Pirlouit continues to mind his table manners.

Of course this peacefulness couldn't last, and after stuffing herself with new grass for half an hour, Pampe remembered there was also a new fence to think about.

She decided to lie down again 5 centimetres away from it, so she could inspect it and strategise while maintaining a demeanour of relaxed innocence.

I was not relaxed.

You are exhausting.

At 7:30pm I started feeling torn, because I don't like to miss apéritif time but—could I run to the kitchen to get a glass of apéritif and some biscuits and run back before Pampe had time to do anything? (The kitchen is 15 metres away.) (I feel like this detail doesn't change anything and if I inserted a poll here everyone would massively vote "Pampe will have time to escape")

But you would be wrong!! When I returned from my quick and suspenseful dash to the kitchen, guess who was on the verge of doing something illegal...?

PAMPOLDINE. Bad llama!! She was interested in tasting the flowers on the other side and she was pretty bashful when I shooed her away.

I believe the only reason Pampérigouste didn't escape is because she assumed her daughter was about to, so her family's reputation was maintained, she would get to see me run and curse llamakind and straighten the fence grumpily, and she didn't even have to get up.

Which goes to show that she doesn't escape due to a deep and unquenchable thirst for freedom, but to aggravate me personally.

I settled on my ash wood throne to have apéritif, comfortably seated in full view of all the animals—

—so of course Pampe immediately got up and went to inspect the fence on the other end of this little pen, behind the hazel tree that was blocking my line of sight, in the one place that I couldn't see from my seat.

I had to get up to see what she was doing (and angrily wave a stick in her direction until she moved away) and when I returned to my tree stump there was a little insect swimming in my wine. Pampe lay down again, pleased with herself.

When it was dinner time and I kindly invited everyone to return to the pasture (Pirlouit & Pampelune complied without fuss), Pampe suddenly lay completely flat in the grass, in what was clearly an attempt to make herself invisible and be forgotten all by herself in this barely-fenced area, kind of like children who dream of being locked in a toy shop overnight.

I haven't taken my eyes off you all evening. Of course I can see you.

I had to poke her with my stick until she deigned to get up and leave (Poldine followed), but all in all it was a very successful little outing. I might do this regularly throughout the summer to keep the grass trimmed in this area, although the difficulty level will be greatly increased when I have to patrol the fence and protect my vegetables at the same time.

I'll add that when I went out later in the evening to close the chicken coop, Poldine & Pampelune were far away, grazing together under the plum trees, meanwhile Pirlouit and Pampe were still queueing in front of the part of the fence that was previously open. Both waiting for me to let them access this heavenly garden again (but with different motivations)

je crois qu'on a encore faim, mais on a déjà mangé deux parts de pizza, bu de l'oasis et grignoter des biscuits apéritifs... ça fait déjà beaucoup, ça m'angoisse de manger plus que ça

J'ai une pote qui sort des excuses de conflits d'intérêts. Mais elle y croit vraiment. C'est une phobie. Elle suit beaucoup les actualités, les scandales politiques, elle a peur de se faire épingler pour conflit d'intérêt. Alors que, bon, elle est à l'accueil d'un centre de loisirs, donc a priori c'est pas trop risqué. C'est pas à cause de ça qu'elle aura un article Mediapart sur sa gueule. Ses hobbies, c'est faire des puzzle, et… c'est tout parce qu'elle est jamais dispo pour sortir, comme je disais elle a la phobie des conflits d'intérêts. Vu de l'extérieur, elle a l'air mytho, mais elle est juste phobique.

Et ça marche avec tout : -apéro chez moi ? -y aura des biscuits apéritif ? -oui. -ah non, je peux pas, j'en vends déjà au travail, on pourrait croire que je les ai volés, ou que j'ai profité de ma connaissance de la gamme pour… -ok, on oublie les biscuits, je prendrai des pistaches. -ah non, c'est mort, j'ai fait mon stage de 3ème dans une épicerie alimentation générale, on vendait QUE ÇA, de la pistache. -bon ok, une randonnée dimanche ? -non, j'habitais à côté d'un Decathlon quand j'étais petite, j'allais à tous les Trocathlon. -piscine ? -ah non, désolée, je te rappelle que je travaille dans un centre de loisirs.

Même aller chez le coiffeur, c'est compliqué pour elle. Elle a fait un stage dans une agence de communication quand elle avait 20 ans. Et l'agence travaillait pour Saint-Algue. Donc elle a peur que si elle va chez le coiffeur, ça passe pour un renvoi d'ascenseur. Même si c'est pas Saint-Algue, dans ce secteur, ça circule beaucoup, t'as forcément dans n'importe quel salon de coiffure des gens qui étaient chez Saint-Algue sur les 15 dernières années.

Alors, la dernière fois, j'ai été chez elle. Pour la sortir un peu. Mais elle était convaincante, du coup, j'ai fini par faire un puzzle avec elle. Et comment c'est trop bien ce truc ! Super addictif, elle avait mis TSF Jazz, on a pas dit un mot mais on s'est trop amusé·es, je suis reparti·e à minuit (c'était un 1000 pièces). C'est incroyable, les puzzles, c'est tellement satisfaisant ! Et encore, elle m'a dit que c'était mieux avec de la lumière naturelle, donc on a rendez-vous samedi (pour un 2000 pièces avec beaucoup de ciel). Et sur le retour, je me suis demandé·e si c'était pas un gros mensonge cette histoire de phobie du conflit d'intérêt. Un gros mensonge pour pouvoir faire des puzzles tous les soirs et tous les weekends.

J'ai un autre pote, il dit qu'il va à la plage pour faire des longueurs. Normalement, c'est à la piscine qu'on dit ça. Des longueurs. Dans la mer, on nage, on fait pas des longueurs.

Lui, il dit "quand je vais à la plage, c'est pour faire des longueurs, c'est pas pour lézarder, je fais mes longueurs, je sèche et j'y vais". Mais éventuellement, quand t'as une plage un peu délimitée sur les côtés, genre dans une crique, tu peux faire des LARGEURS, ça d'accord. Mais des longueurs, non, c'est long et dangereux. Il habite à Nice. Je lui dis, si tu vas jusqu'en Tunisie, t'as des grosses vagues, des gros bateaux, l'eau elle est super froide au milieu, et puis à la limite l'aller ça va, mais le retour, y a des accidents quand même, renseigne-toi.

Il m'a dit qu'il savait, mais qu'il continuait à dire longueurs, parce que c'était un truc avec sa mère et son enfance. J'ai pas retenu. Mais j'ai retenu que c'était beau de me raconter ça.

C'est beau quand même d'apprendre à se connaître, d'avoir des spécificités. Et que les gens autour fasse pareil. Comprennent des trucs sur leur fonctionnement. Et que ces gens te donnent accès comme ça à un peu de leur intimité.

Une belle cuvée pleine de charme et de finesse. Idéal pour finir l'année en beauté ou bien commencer la nouvelle. Il pourra accompagner un repas sans problème ou à l'apéritif. Le maître mot c'est plaisir.

{Au Prince de Galles} Une autrice que j'adore et ma Mélie chérie m'ont fait retrouver le chemin des bars de beaux hôtels. C'était mon cardio avec ma bande de copines il y a 20 ans de cela. Le Crillon était notre favori, avec son décor de coffret à bijoux, la générosité de ses présentoirs argentés à biscuits apéritifs et son ambiance Vogue, journalistes et quelques voyageurs égarés. Le Plaza était une folie, nous n'avons jamais fait le Ritz. La semaine dernière j'ai découvert le bar du Prince de Galles (𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦 𝘝, à 𝘤ô𝘵é 𝘥𝘶 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘥𝘶 𝘮ê𝘮𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘮), le 19.20. L'endroit est calme, élégant, l'ambiance musicale est très agréable, l'équipe absolument parfaite. On y boit de vrais cocktails, créatifs, savoureux, aux parfums subtils mais aux caractères bien marqués. Mon préféré ? Le Rose d'Or. C'est beau, c'est bon, servi avec élégance et gentillesse. Here's my new coffee mug from the potters' market! (and matching salad bowl) (and bonus hen, and tablecloth boarlet—busy photo, sorry). The woman I bought it from was really sweet, I asked her if the flowers would be ok in the dishwasher and she said earnestly "they won't fade in the dishwasher but supposing they do you come back next year and I'll give you a mug with twice as many flowers." It's nice to have a guarantee.

Also I got the little bird cup I didn't buy last year because I didn't need a bird cup... A whole year later I still longed for it so it's not an impulse buy anymore and it's allowed. Pandolf was politely asked to go away so his big bear head wouldn't distract from the main subject of the photo and he politely declined.

The cup is just big enough for a little snack or a bunch of apéritif biscuits, it's perfect. It's not the same colour as the bird cup I saw last year though, and I think last year's cup was even prettier (maybe I'm idealising the past.) It's dangerous to allow oneself impulse buys at the potters' market but still—always purchase the bird cup at once.

French Christmas and New Year traditions

We’ve compiled a bunch of Christmas / end of the year traditions that we have here in France that maybe some of you weren’t aware of (some we have are in common with other countries).

1. Christmas

❄︎ FOOD

Most of the time, there are two family gathering meals at Christmas: one dinner for Christmas Eve on the evening of the 24th, and one on Christmas Day (so the 25th) for lunch. The same kind of dishes can be made for both days, so we’ve compiled a non-exhaustive list of typical food we tend to eat for Christmas.

Drinks

Champagne is the main alcohol drank during Christmas, or other bubble wines (mousseux), like clairette de Die, or crémant (French sparkling wines). Some other wines could be drank with the meals, like sweet white wine with foie gras or dry white wine with sea food. Red wine if often drank during the cheese platter.

It's pretty common to have a different wine for each course, though it's not always the case: for instance, Champagne during apéritif/starter, a white/red/rosée wine during the main course, a red wine during the cheese platter, and a sparkling wine during dessert!

Apéritif/starters

Smoked salmon, usually on toasts or on its own, with lime or butter or cream

Foie gras on toast, sometimes accompanied with figs  (note: while this is really typical for Christmas here, it’s controversial because of the methods used to make it, consisting of forced-feeding of ducks and geese. Some people avoid it because of it.)

Oysters

Scallops

Various verrines (can include aubergine dips, soups, etc.)

Green beans or prunes wrapped in bacon

Main course

Stuffed turkey or capon with chestnuts

Some will have game meat

Main side dishes often include potatoes: gratin dauphinois, dauphine potato, etc.

Cheese platter

Can include any type of cheese really, mostly will often be found:

Goat cheese

Comté

Brie

Camembert

Reblochon

Bleu

Dessert

Bûche de Noël: this is really typical from here and is often found in other Francophone countries. They are found in many different flavours like chocolate, fruit… We can see Marinette handing some to her friends at the start of the Christmas special episode:

❄︎ ADVENT CALENDAR

Like a lot of other countries, children in France often have an advent calendar to wait for Christmas. This tradition takes its origins in Germany.

Most of the time, kids will open a square of the calendar corresponding to the date of the day, and get to eat a chocolate.

But of course, just because it’s usually reserved for children doesn’t mean adults can’t join in the fun of it!

❄︎ CHRISTMAS MARKETS / MARCHÉS DE NOËL

Christmas markets are pretty common in France, and each big city will have their own. Most of the time, you can find small stalls under wooden cabins, where craftspeople sell various Christmas-related items: clothes, with winter hats, scarfs or gloves for instance, wooden Christmas characters, Christmas ornaments, jam / honey / local food type of stalls, food stalls with winter-type of food such as tartiflette, etc.

Every Christmas market will have mulled wine (=vin chaud in French). It’s made with hot red wine and spices such as cinnamon, sometimes with honey.

There are many Christmas markets in Paris, and you can find a compilation of their locations (at least the ones we got this year, 2021) on this website. The main one used to be located at the Champs Elysées, but it’s been relocated a couple of years ago at the Jardin des Tuileries, near the Louvre (we see Ladybug & Chat Noir fighting here during Backwarder, season 3).

Some of the most famous and beautiful Christmas markets in France can be found in the cities of Strasbourg and Colmar, in Alsace.

❄︎ AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Most of the time, the presents are opened on the morning of the 25th of December, but depending on each family’s “traditions” and preferences, they’re sometimes opened on the evening of the 24th.

In Christian families, there’s often a crèche = nativity scene at the foot of the Christmas tree (or close to it), composed of various painted clay nativity figures called “santons”. One tradition is to get one new “santon” per year to expand the crèche. Generally, the baby Jesus figurine is kept hidden in the countdown to Christmas, and is added in the night between the 24th and the 25th.

2. New Year’s Eve Traditions

❄︎ FOOD

There isn’t really a traditional dish for new year’s in France. It most of the time starts with an “apéritif” (pre-dinner); some will then just eat the same kind of stuff as Christmas, others will prefer having a buffet. Champagne will often be served as a drink, especially when Midnight strikes.

❄︎ MIDNIGHT

At midnight, people will wish each other a happy new year and good health for the year to come (bonne année et bonne santé !), accompanied with a “la bise” (a double kiss cheek on cheek), and we open a champagne bottle to share.

Lots of cities/towns organise fireworks at midnight; there usually are big ones around the Eiffel Tower, which are transmitted on TV. It’s possible for people to organise some in their private garden, but there's strict legislation regarding them and because of it, they’re pretty rare.

❄︎ RESOLUTIONS & WISHES

Like in most countries, people will more or less seriously make a list of resolutions for the new year to come.

During the first month of the new year, it’s customary to send greetings cards (= cartes de vœux in French) to the people you know / love, and you usually wish a happy new year to everyone you talk to.
