Inspired by Dollightful's latest doll, I challenged myself to see if I could make a similar wig for one of my dolls.

I didn't have fibre in the right texture, but some mohair that worked well enough. I'm not super happy with the crooked hairline and some parts stick out too much. The braids are not as visible as I wished for, but in the end I'm still happy with it.

The baby hairs I painted worked a bit of a small wonder to tie it all together.

My first doll project of 2024 was to re-style Ember. I made my first sewn wig from pre-made wefts and I am happy with it!

The part is messy, but it's not bad for my first wig like this. The wig cap is fabric and I bought it years ago from Angelesque still. I sewed most of the wefts on while the cap was on her head.

With her new pastel pink and mint wig, I finally kicked myself in the butt to also redo her faceup. I opted for now applied eyelashes this time because her eyes are so narrow that you can't see them at all.

This was her previous faceup and wig. The wig always was meant to be temporary, because I don't like it that much, but it was the only one I didn't feel bad cutting holes into for her horns.

The transparent horns are magnetic, but the solid ones are not, and of course they are a very awkward position making it impossible for her to wear normal wigs. Yes, the wig I sewed has holes cut into it for her horns. It's stretchy which is the only reason it goes over the horns at all.

WIP - Wig for Link

It has been some time since I made a doll wig I was so motivated to start on Link's wig that I prepared the wig cap the day he arrived :'D

Then making wefts it was. I made a huge batch.

.... I didn't make enough wefts. So I made another batch to continue the next day.

Then I was able to do the parting and let it dry while I was at work.

Final cut and styling followed after I returned home:

Doll head arrived and it’s definitely old, it’s nice and solid now and a bit yellowed.

So the thing is from the listing photos I was like “ah yeah that looks like a ddh06 from the eye holes” but I get it in and… I have a ddh06 already and the chin on this one is pointier and the mouth is higher up. I’m trying to look at other sculpts but I’m not seeing one that looks exactly the same (I am really bad with identifying sculpts though)

Please someone who actually knows about this stuff can you help me….. who is she…

Hey just wanted to let you know I don't really comment on the doll posts because it's not really my field of expertise (transmasc and tend to avoid that stuff due to bad memories of people getting me dolls and other stereotypically "girl" stuff as a kid) but I still read through them when you post them because I love the way you "review" everything. For this last one, you imply that the eyeballs not being in the doll initially is a fairly common thing with large dolls? I'm curious why is that, do you know? Are the eyes something that could get damaged in transportation? (Also how do you even handle putting the eyeballs in the doll's head that is so disturbing hehe...)

so im not actually huuuuuge into bjds, they tend to have their own sort of community from like playline barbies and monster highs and everything set of collectors, but its to my understanding that basically most large ball-jointed dolls focus far more on their customization aspects than these little blind boxes do.

basically, a high end bjd can be pretty costly, and there’s a ton of different artists/studios out there making custom sculpts for collectors. typically, these are bought as a nude doll with no sort of clothes or wig or anything, and the person who’s buying that doll will buy those separately. part of this customization can be custom eyes, which you put in with putty (and you can use this to do things like give them a side glance, etc)

afaik most of these dolls will include their own set of eyes, but people like to swap out the eye chips for different colors and styles as they please, so the inside of the head is basically empty with eye holes to swap out the eyes

larger dolls usually have something like this instead of the faceplates that the mini ones i have do.

but even then, it’s popular to switch out the eyes of the little dolls too! for some of them on kikagoods i’ve seen additional eye chips etc that you can get.

some of the other little ones i have actually have little paper slips inside instead, and theres already a clear layer on the head so they look like more standard inset eyes

i also have a few more standard fashion dolls that have inset eyes as well! rainbow/shadow high dolls also have them, but they instead use eye “chips” that go in the front, since they aren’t meant to be swapped out like bjd eyes. of course, customizers still find a way, but i just find it interesting that there’s so many different approaches to getting the inset eye look.

as for why i don’t have any problem putting them in, you get desensitized to the “creepy” factor of dissassembled dolls pretty quickly, especially if you like to do customization. i’ve had disembodied parts everywhere, dolls with hair drying left out around sinks with their hands removed, blank faces from taking the paint off. i think at this point i can’t really find dolls creepy anymore. sure, my family will still get jumpscared by the occasional project doll left drying in an unexpected place, but im used to it lol

Ehehehe the NYC dollcon exclusive is a tiefling doll, and he's available in pink!

That means discount Shakespeare Mercutio bjd *will* be happening! He'll be a smaller scale than everyone else, but I guess that's ok given I impulsively ended up going 1/3 for Vanora and Faolan >< also then maybe he can chill on my desk with me sometimes. Not sure how I'll manage his hair since he has an undercut but that's a problem for future future me xD current me is just excited tiefling won that poll lol

So... you know, I got this Little Monica Tommy, and because I really liked the original style, I went for a similar look

But tbh it has been bothering me and I'm not sure if I want it.

So I thought, maybe she wants to be a brunette? I grabbed some brown fibre and held it against her head.

Instantly liked her better.

BUT THEN I thought, maybe she just doesn't want to be short haired? So I took some blonde fibre and held it against her head. And now I'm in the dilemma that I like both 🫠

I guess I'll see what I'll say after a night of sleep.

I'll probably make her two wigs RIP

WiP - Short wig for Allen

As Allen gets a haircut .... no.

I got an additional head just to make a new wig, I explained in before and now finally came to make the wig as I ofc keep the old one for the case I need it for older styles or that he will grow out his hair again :')

It feels somehow like he truly got a haircut. Of course I have changed wigs for dolls in all the years, replaced them etc but I never stayed that close to the former wig that it felt this weird, I really have to get used to it.

Just to add a bit of fun background: i worked on the wig on new year's eve and finished it on new year, basically the first doll craft finished in 2024.
