Fomapan 400: Multiple Exposure Experiment on Film

During my recent street photography session in Kuala Lumpur, I had my first experience shooting and testing Fomapan 400 with double exposure. As the price of Kodak films has increased again in 2023, using black & white film stock seems to be the cheapest solution currently available.This is my second film double exposure project after trying Ilford Delta 100. I am still in the learning process and experimenting with what I want to create, so I cannot shoot creative double exposures as seen in Lomography. Nonetheless, I am surprised by the results of this B&W film photography project, although not everyone may appreciate the artwork through the lens.

I had some failed shots but also some amazing ones in my opinion. This project might be a good source of inspiration for others. I had planned to use this Fomapan 400 film roll while exploring film photography in Bangkok, but unfortunately, I ran out of time. So, I decided to experiment with multiple exposures using this film stock.

About Fomapan 400

Fomapan 400 is a black and white film stock produced by Foma Bohemia, a Czech film manufacturer. This film is known for its high sensitivity, allowing photographers to shoot in low light conditions without sacrificing image quality. Fomapan 400 is also known for its fine grain and high resolution, making it an excellent choice for street photography, documentary photography, and portraiture.The film comes in 35mm and 120 roll film format and has a wide exposure latitude, making it easy to get good results even in tricky lighting conditions. It is also a versatile film that can be used for a variety of photographic applications, from landscapes to portraits to action shots. Fomapan 400 is a relatively affordable film stock compared to some of the more well-known brands, making it an excellent choice for photographers on a budget. The Beauty of Kuala Lumpur Daily Life: In Black & White

While shooting in a flea market called Pasar Karat in Kuala Lumpur, I stumbled upon a great shot of a stranger that looked natural and beautiful on film. I liked how the natural light illuminated the subject. During the entire street photography session, I was looking for something unusual, and I managed to get a great shot by blending the subject with the surroundings.

Contax G1, Fomapan 400 // February 2023 After moving back to its old location behind Petaling Street in 2023, Pasar Karat seemed to have lifted the spirits of its vendors. They appeared to be in a better mood than usual, and I managed to capture one of my favorite portrait shots with the Fomapan 400. In the past, I had a negative experience there while taking photos in the flea market alley, which affected my mood and productivity for the following months. However, after my trip to Bangkok, my street photography productivity appears to have returned. Pasar Karat is a flea market in the heart of Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The name "Pasar Karat" translates to "rusty market" in English, as the market is known for selling all sorts of used and vintage items, including rusty tools, old coins, and antique furniture. The market has a long history dating back to the early 1980s when it was first established. Initially, it was a popular spot for second-hand goods traders and collectors, but over time it has become a popular tourist attraction for visitors looking for unique souvenirs and a taste of local culture. Pasar Karat is known for its bustling and vibrant atmosphere, with vendors setting up stalls along the narrow alleyways of Chinatown. It is a great place to explore and discover hidden treasures, from vintage cameras and old records to quirky knick-knacks and handmade crafts.

I tried to finish the 36 exposures on the Fomapan 400 film roll during my four-hour walk around Chinatown in KL. However, I found it challenging to come up with ideas as my mind was blank. But as I walked further, some scenes caught my eye, and I managed to capture some great shots.Using my Contax G1 rangefinder film camera for double exposure shots is my favorite. For me, creating artwork using film stocks and painting the streets with my camera is quite fun and unique.

It is great news that you can now get these double exposure photos as wall art prints in high resolution for printing. I did not want to overuse the multiple exposure mode with my Contax G1 as I felt it might wear out the film camera faster.

Ilford Delta 100 - Film Double Exposure B&W Street Photography

I have been out of ideas of what to shoot with the Contax G1 film camera and suddenly thought of doing a film double exposure on the Ilford Delta 100. I bought the film stock at a low price and kind of regret not buying more of this film stock because the high contrast results are excellent! It is my first experience shooting double exposure on film and also a film challenge I've set for myself. I was quite grateful that my film camera has this multi-exposure feature and shooting double exposure on an SLR film camera can be troublesome.Based on my research there are certain film photographers out there who would do film swaps with other photographers to get the double exposure effects rather than shooting it alone on the same film roll. Well, at first I  have no confidence and thought that I won't be able to achieve or create double exposure effects because it requires certain creativity but once you know the concept of how double exposure works, it shouldn't be an issue anymore. It is all about the shadows and highlight areas. I did some research on YouTube the day before I went to the street to shoot this Ilford Delta 100 as my film double exposure project.This is one of the photos that I like from this project which shows the first shot of a vintage portrait image with jeans on the wall and the second shot of a group of strangers. Once I've taken the first shot, I quickly find a black surface which is the man's shirt in the photo.

Had Fun Shooting Double Exposure on Film

Double exposure, also known as multi-exposure is more than fun. I consider it as an artwork and it does test you to think more than before you press the shutter button because you will try to find a suitable scene for the double exposure to work. While I was shooting double-exposure street photography, I keep looking for interesting objects, places, backgrounds and people, that will be used in the photo. It is a very challenging shooting project and you will find it worth it if you get nice results.You can learn how to shoot double exposure on film and it works great for creative portraits and street photography. Shooting double exposure is one of the must-try fun photography projects if you are bored and have no idea what to shoot. When shooting a film with double exposure on the street, I tried to find something that are not too busy or too many details as this will mess up the entire layering. I know it can be a hassle if you try to shoot with a fully manual film camera but you can give it a try. There are tutorials on Youtube about shooting double exposure on film cameras which required you to rewind the film back to the previous exposure.All the photos are shot at box speed and without going through any Photoshop editing or post-processing on my end.

Love The High Contrast Ilford Delta 100 Film

I wish I have another film roll to shoot only street photography photos and daily life in the city areas in Kuala Lumpur. I find that I tend to get a few blurry images compared to previous projects that use high-speed films such as the Kodak Vision3 500T projects. I get this film at a very low price from a dealer in KL but it was now out of stock.If you are planning to do a similar double exposure street photography project on film, you can try Ilford Delta 100 or the 400 ISO for more film speed. For most of the photos, I've shot at an aperture of f8-f4 at around 9 am in the morning.As usual, I sent my film to a film lab in Kuala Lumpur, developed and scanned by Darkroom8 Malaysia. It took about 3-4 days to see the end result and I am quite amazed at it. I could say it is a successful film double exposure project for me as I get the shots that I wanted although certainly, it can be improved in the next project if I have one.

Final Thoughts

There goes my film challenge project finally completed this 5 hours photo walk in the city of Kuala Lumpur. It took me quite a while to finish the entire 36 exposures because I was shooting quite slowly in order to get a good double exposure. When shooting at a slow pace with a film camera, I can think more about what I want to shoot. As for the moments in street photography, if shoot slowly I might also miss out on the important moments.Well, just do what we can.
