The last time the pivotal experience of not having my email and user login information change crossed my mind is when I was studying the User Access Rights module for my #Google System Administration and IT infrastructure #Certification. It was actually a hurtful reminder of how low of a priority my request was to change the username “MCKNIGG@”. The opportunity was presented during an entire user administration credential refresh due to the company merger. Still, the change never happened. Many years later, upon completion of my System Administration certification, my methodology for ticket priority and user admin rights expectations are very high when I assign those tasks. This Black history month in 2023, while considering this #experience, I’m celebrating myself and overcoming difficulties. The below excerpt from the “I, Too” poem by Langston Hughes commemorates this experience best. Today is not only the first day of #Blackhistorymonth it is the famous author’s birthday.

I am so glad I got the chance to see Deana Lawson’s exhibit, “Planes,” at The Underground Museum on its closing day. My crappy pictures certainly don’t do her work or the museum space justice. Lawson’s photographs convey an air of familiarity and relatability, and yet are visibly staged, highlighting Lawson’s deliberateness in the creation of her work, which I find intriguing. Despite my conservative day job, I’ve always been drawn to the arts. I was fortunate to be exposed to and developed an appreciation for art at a young age. But my appreciation has also been obscured by my frustration over the lack of representation from marginalized artists (particularly women+WOC) and diversity of the art and art institutions that were accessible to me. The UM has positioned itself to be a solution, if not the solution, to the shortfalls of the elite art world. Founded by a Black artist and run by his Black family in a Black and Brown neighborhood in L.A., the UM represents the declaration [about black art] that, “We will be seen and heard (and celebrated), even if we have to do it our damn selves.” I could say so much more about the UM (and Lawson’s work), but it’s best to experience it firsthand and take it all in by yourself—or with friends (thanks again for joining me @piercedphotos!).
