If you've got a kid who has an affection for fairy tales and all the traditional favourites, Marlene Newman's "Myron's Magic Cow" (2005) is the perfect book for your next read-aloud! We're looking at books that are great for inferencing skills this week at the Read With River Book Club, and the magical realism of Newman's story is brilliant for this. Sprinkled throughout this familiar story of a little boy who is sent to run errands by his mum are references to all kinds of folktale favourites, from Jack of Jack and the Beanstalk fame to the Three Bears. Kids will absolutely delight in picking up on these hints as they enjoy an overarching tale that has a bit of the fantastic in it as well. I love that this book is also beautifully inclusive - Myron is black, and lives in an apartment building in the city with his family. So nice to see wonderful fantasy stories that aren't all blond little girls and white picket fences. Representation should never be limited. Literature is another great way to represent the black community. most of the books listed above are  focusing  and discussing natural hair for black girls. Black girls and women are often criticized and shamed for their hair. Having discussions with young black girls about their hair is a great way to empower them and show them that Black is beautiful. I’ve worked for the library for 12 years and throughout the years I have noticed a great variety of books that represent different cultures, races and sexuality. I’m started to see more diversity and also important topics that should be in literature. This is a perfect example of that!

"I Don't Care" (1977) by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat (of Nate the Great fame), and illustrated by the brilliant Lillian Hoban, May be over 40 years old, but it's still by far one of the best kid's books for social-emotional learning that I've ever encountered. 📚📙📗 Beautifully child-centered, it follows the story of Jonathan, a little boy, as he loses a favourite possession and learns how to cope with that ... finding out that sometimes it's okay to have BIG FEELINGS about things and just let them out in order to let them pass. A lot of us are familiar with Ezra Jack Keats' beautiful books, and the first one that comes to mind is usually "The Snowy Day". But after finding a copy of his Caldecott Honor book "Goggles!" (1969) on my wall the other day, and some recent conversations I've had about inclusion and representation, I thought I'd share this first. 📙📗 "Goggles" is a book about a lot of things: best friends, adventure, dealing with bullies. But most importantly, I think, it's a wonderfully relatable story about childhood in spaces that don't have green lawns or big single-family homes. It's about being a kid in a world where families live in apartments, kids play on concrete, graffiti is everywhere, and childhood is STILL full of imagination, adventure, and love. We need more books like this--books that reflect ALL THE LIVED EXPERIENCES of children. Given that this is at least the third book of his that I've shared, I think it's pretty clear that I'm a big fan of the late Ezra Jack Keats. There are many things to love about his stories. They were deliberately inclusive and representative of both inner city children and kids of colour, for example, at a time when that was far from the norm. What I love most about Keats' work, though, is particularly apparent in "Whistle for Willie" (1964), and that's the author-illustrator's uncanny ability to both understand and portray a child's perspective on the world. While the main story, about Peter's attempts to learn how to whistle, is very endearing, it's the tangents Peter goes off on as he wanders about the neighbourhood that touched my heart. Childhood is a time of confusion and uncertainty, and it's so important to instill a sense of self and of confidence in our kids. So today, for World Mental Health Day, I'm sharing a book about that, about the damage that bullying, racism, gender discrimination, and above all placing limits on children's imaginations and sense of what they are capable of can do. Mary Hoffman's "Amazing Grace" (1991) has everything in it. It's a wonderfully readable story about a little girl with a big imagination, who loves to play make-believe. And when her class prepares to put on a play, Grace feels that this is her chance to shine ... until classmates drag her down with insistences that she is the "wrong" colour and gender to play the lead.
