I'm loving this inclusive, body-positive, no-toxic-masculinity-whatsoever body book for boys! One of my older male students was having body image issues about being rounder than others in his class, and that made me realize I didn't have any male or gender neutral books on body image and body changes - only ones for girls! So I went on a search, and finally found a great one in this book. It addresses issues in a clear, helpful, and informative way, with a tone that is both good-humored and serious when it especially matters. It uses "adults in your life" instead of parents to be inclusive of all caregivers, guides healthy choices while affirming "there is no wrong way to have a body" and bodies come in all shapes and sizes, talks about the need for emotional support, and shows the importance of consent in a very age-appropriate way. The only part I didn't like is that it does not talk about trans boys, who should be included - many of the hormonal changes of puberty addressed here would also apply to boys taking T. I am planning to find and get some nonfiction body books that include trans boys, but haven't found one yet - one that I found would be great but is more for middle and high school boys. But this one is a good start to fill the gap in our collection? #bodyimage #bodypositive #inclusivekidsbooks #kidsnonfiction #bodyimage #nonfictionkidsbooks #librariansofinstagram #librariansfollowlibrarians #schoollibrarian #schoollibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/CYC4FiZMT-V/?utm_medium=tumblr

Never assume! It's my dad's favourite motto, and possibly mine, too. We make so many assumptions about the people and world around us, but if we stop, watch, and listen, we often find out that we were completely wrong, in the most wonderful, eye-opening ways. To wit: I've never been a fan of princess stories, even as a kid, but Kate Beaton's "The Princess and The Pony" (2015) subverts expectations again and again, and THAT is something I love! 🐎🐎🐎 A multiracial warrior princess little girl; a chubby, flatulent pony that seems to be utterly, adorably useless; battles; cosy sweaters; hilarity, and a subtle message about love not being based on perceived worth, and not assuming that we know it all ... This book has everything! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #theprincessandthepony #katebeaton #warriorprincess #girlsandponies #girlscandoanything #girlpower #booksforstronggirls #feministkids #feministkidsbooks #inclusivechildrensbooks #inclusivekids #inclusivekidsbooks #multiracialkids #multiracial #multiracialfamily #inclusioninaction #inclusivebooks #inclusionandrepresentation #diversebooksforkids #weneedinclusivebooks #bookstagrammer #igreads #booksaremylife #raisingkindhumans #kindnessiscool #readwithriver_discussions #kidlitillustration #illustrationforkids https://www.instagram.com/p/B3kmwH_nAxw/?igshid=109n1agan2qt9

Young readers learn about Sikander’s childhood growing up in a multigenerational, multicultural home in Lahore, Pakistan and how she passes her time skateboarding, swimming, and flying her kite. They follow along as she studies miniature paintings in art school, and finds a new home in America. Roots and Wings is an inspirational story of an artist who followed her passion, and found success doing what she loves. The illustrations by Hanna Barczyk are breathtaking. The color work is absolute perfection! Just look at these pages! I have a full review on my blog (link in bio) so be sure to check it out for more detail. A lot of us are familiar with Ezra Jack Keats' beautiful books, and the first one that comes to mind is usually "The Snowy Day". But after finding a copy of his Caldecott Honor book "Goggles!" (1969) on my wall the other day, and some recent conversations I've had about inclusion and representation, I thought I'd share this first. 📙📗 "Goggles" is a book about a lot of things: best friends, adventure, dealing with bullies. But most importantly, I think, it's a wonderfully relatable story about childhood in spaces that don't have green lawns or big single-family homes. It's about being a kid in a world where families live in apartments, kids play on concrete, graffiti is everywhere, and childhood is STILL full of imagination, adventure, and love. We need more books like this--books that reflect ALL THE LIVED EXPERIENCES of children. And bravo to Mr. Keats for showing us that, back when it wasn't nearly so popular. ⏺ ⏺ ⏺ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #noodlenutskidsbooks #goggles #ezrajackkeats #ezrajackkeatsbooks #puffinpicturebooks #puffinpicturebook #picturepuffin #macmillankidsbooks #booksaboutbullying #bullying #bullies #innercitykids #citykids #blackkidsbooks #diversitymatters #inclusivekidsbooks #inclusionmatters #representationinchildrensbooks #representationmatters #diversekidlit #weneeddiversebooks #weneeddiversekidsbooks #seeyourselfseeeachother #diversepicturebooks #diversebooksforkids #blackcharacters #inclusioninkidlit #childhoodfavorite #classicchildrensbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B0g7SuPn9sX/?igshid=8pd6qfqhu0z8

Fear doesn't always manifest in obvious ways. This week, we at the @readwithriver Book Club are examining various aspects of fear, and it occurred to me that beyond ghosts and spiders, fear is often about far more prosaic things: being afraid of the unknown, the unfamiliar, and more specifically, fear of being unable to do what we've always done. The fear of disability, in fact, is one that affects adults as much as kids. So today I'm sharing "The Black Book of Colors" (2006, published in Australia as "The Black Book of Colours") by Menena Cotton and Rosana Daria, a book which addresses exactly those things. 👀👀👀 An exceptionally beautiful and interesting book that I have in my own collection, "The Black Book of Colours" is exactly what it says: a book which uses texture, description, and black-on-black raised design to illustrate how a blind person might experience colour without sight. The text is set in white on black, but also in Braille, so that children can get a sense of how reading works for those who are not sighted. Reading it is truly an experience, demystifying some of the unfamiliar parts of life without sight, and one that my own little helpers found fascinating when we read it together. I hope you will, too! ⚫ Love discovering the best picture books? Check out the rest of the club, and don't forget to participate this week with the hashtag #readwithriver_fears @inclusivestorytime @sharing.the.shelf @noodlenuts_classics @_mybookaddiction_ @houstonlibraryfinds @bodkinandroo @thetinyactivists @littledailylibrarian @toddlers.who.read @talesofkids ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #noodlenutsclassickidlit #bookstagraminthe6ix #theblackbookofcolors #theblackbookofcolours #menenacottin #rosanafaria #rosanafaría #seeinginthedark #fears #fear #whatareyouafraidof #blindness #braille #blackonblack #inclusionmatters #inclusioninkidlit #representationinchildrensbooks #representation #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilityacceptance #braillebooks #braillebooks4kids #braillebooksforkids #touchandfeelbook #beautifulchildrensbooks #childrensbook #inclusivekidsbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B2fC76UnzxK/?igshid=1m4gw7nfkcu8k

There's nothing lovelier than appreciating a little variety in life! And I've loved Mo Willems's "Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed" (2009) from the very first time I read it for precisely that reason. Well, and because it's a fun story too, of course! 📚📚📚 When we're first introduced to Wilbur, a naked mole rat breaking all of his community's taboos by reveling in his love of clothes, it seems like Willems could go in one of two obvious directions with the story: he could laud Wilbur's brazen individuality, or push the notion of compromising for tradition's sake. Instead, in a bold move worthy of Wilbur, the author chooses to embrace BOTH, reminding us that it is okay to be the person who likes to be different, but there's also nothing wrong with those who are more comfortable doing what's familiar. A beautiful demonstration of true inclusiveness at its best! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #nakedmoleratgetsdressed #mowillems #mowillemsbooks #mowillemsrocks #hyperion #hyperionbooks #readwithriver_clothes #nakedmolerat #nakedmolerats #nakedmoleratsofinstagram #clothes #clothing #wilbur #gettingdressed #wearingclothes #dressing #nolongernaked #readaloudbooks #readalouds #storytime #readingtime📖 #inclusionmatters #inclusionanddiversity #inclusivekidsbooks #inclusive #inclusivebooks #inclusioninkidlit https://www.instagram.com/p/B2XU0GrHDv2/?igshid=7rhbwgjpbjiz

I'm a sucker for multiculturalism. While I'm painfully aware of the need for inclusivity and not to exoticise other people and cultures, one of the things I love about being Canadian is the emphasis on embracing all the beautiful manifestations of culture, rather than encouraging a "melting pot" attitude. For this reason, I've long been a fan of Chieri Uegaki and Stéphane Jorisch's "Suki's Kimono" (2003). 📚📙📗 I love that this book reflects multiple aspects of ethnic experience, from Suki, who wants to wear the kimono and wooden sandals that her grandmother got her to school, to her big sisters, who long only to fit in, as most kids do, in t-shirts and jeans. It's a beautifully encompassing approach that reflects how we are all complex and multifaceted as humans, and that we can live in the world while embracing tradition without contradiction. Highly recommended. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #sukiskimono #chieriuegaki #stephanejorisch #stéphanejorisch #kidscanpress #kimono #tradition #traditionalclothing #japanesetradition #japanesetraditionalclothes #geta #taiko #taikodrums #multiculturalism #multiculturalbooksforkids #asiankids #japanesekids #assimilation #kimonoforkids #diversebooksforkids #weneeddiversebooks #inclusivekidsbooks #representationinchildrensbooks #representationinkidlit #representationmatters #classicchildrensbooks #bestbooksforkids https://www.instagram.com/p/B17Cta0Hp_3/?igshid=1msafdhuuaclu
