A little cassette love! Tag a cassette loving friend! This is part of a haul from an estate sale that @rockstar.kristin and I went to yesterday. Unfortunately the owner and his brother lost a battle with Covid 😔 These are mostly blank cassettes with albums recorded onto them, and some other prerecorded albums as well 📼 And the case itself they came in is pretty sweet as well! It’s a clamshell type case with these metal rods to hold everything in place, and then an elastic band allows access to the tapes. Weird flex on the design but I like it! TITLE OF ARTICLE: THE FLOURISHING POWER OF ART AMIDST THIS TIME OF UNCERTAINTY IN THE PHILIPPINES

1) Free From Sorrow and Healing Through Art

It’s been a year of battling with this unprecedented time of COVID-19 crisis, yet we’re still in isolation, and apart from keeping ourselves safe from the virus, we should also look after our mental health. Mental wellness and self-care are vital in this period, and one way to do it is via art. Art therapy has been around for many years as a coping method even before the pandemic. This could be in a form of a painting, a sculpture, a song, or photography, etc. Art is utilized as a safe medium to release emotions and reduce feelings of tension and anxiety because it helps our brains to produce a happy hormone, known as dopamine (Art Therapy Is More Important Now than Ever During the COVID-19 Pandemic, 2020). This pandemic is likely to be more stressful and overwhelming than usual for most individuals, therefore it's a perfect approach to discover something to help us get through these difficult times. During quarantine, we can still be productive and use the extra time to explore and develop our passions or abilities. The beauty in art therapy is that anyone can become an artist because it’s all about the process of healing, relaxation, and being comfortable. We don’t have to be afraid of other people’s judgments as it's not about how good a piece of art is or how it will turn out in the end; it's about your heart and soul being mirrored on it. We also don’t need to spend a lot of money; instead, we can be resourceful with the materials we have at home. We need to do something to keep our brains occupied and redirect our attention away from the stresses of COVID-19, in which we can also gain a meditative experience and enjoyment. 

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) aims to expand the provision of informative and inspiring materials to Filipinos via alternate platforms in response to ECQ. One of their programs to be conducted is Arts for Therapy and Capacity Building, along with Arts and Culture Online, and Live Arts on Lockdown. The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a pocket concert as part of the program's "healing" events, which will also include modules on arts that will aid in mental health (Cultural Center of the Philippines, 2020). CCP aims to keep its mission of making arts relevant to Filipinos' lives. On the other hand, the Bonifacio Art Foundation has already started their sessions of “You ART Not Alone” last March 25. They encourage people to use art as a therapeutic basis wherever they are, especially in the comfort of their homes. Patty Villacorta's mixed media piece "Castle in the Air" is made from a variety of materials including foam board, cotton, wood, fabric, mirror, cord rope, paper print, wire, and tape. She participated in the foundation’s online art contest. The foundation's aim in hosting these sessions online is to uplift and de-stress others through art (Baron, 2020). They chose to use a creative technique to assist individuals to heal from their inner suffering and mental health concerns. This other picture shows that the COVID-19 outbreak didn’t become a hindrance for those art foundations like Bonifacio Art Foundation and other art therapists to assist their patients or people in need of help. They still make ways to be able to facilitate activities that would promote personal development and function as a coping skill through the use of online meeting apps. This way, they can still exchange empathy and be connected to each other despite the protocols.

2) Art as a Strong Medium of Emotions and Reflection of Truth

Government ruling is always a talk of town in the Philippines as it is a substantial issue for everyone in the country. During this pandemic, Filipino’s gushed various response regarding President Duterte’s governance. 

 “Manila’s overall response to the pandemic has been fraught with incompetence and rife with terror.” - Beltran, 2020.

For instance, many may be reminded of how the majority from the country eagerly clamor the administration for mass testing which was returned with rejection. Image from Rappler (Baizas, 2020). However, Filipinos continue to nudge the action of the government through rallies or protests. In these activities, placards and protest signs are a must wherein portraits or paintings of exaggeration are also exhibited. For this reason, it is claimed to be influenced by the Dadaism art movement (Martinique, 2016).

Art used as an instrument to protest, or simply Protest Art, varies from graffiti, illustrations, posters, and others. Emotions, dreams, imaginations, and observations are some of the instigators of art and these instigators are what artists try to communicate and express in their art. People form or join protests to be heard, similar to why some do art. It both aim and functions as a persuasion tool in society, or just a matter of self-expression or as a commentary. Expression through art also seems to strengthen the message each one of them desires to convey. All in all, people can and had exploited art to pierce the silence and communicate concerns. 

3) Art as a Communicator and a Symbol of Hope 

Art may convey important messages and amplify what needs to be heard, in addition to expressing feelings. Because there are a lot of restrictions and protective measures today, which include social distancing, our day-to-day communication has been really affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Nonetheless, people are becoming more creative towards a wider approach on how to ease communication. Face masks, which are required to prevent the spread of the virus, are becoming more unique and creative, which may expand their use. Through art, we can cultivate positivity, gratitude, and most especially, hope, all of each are vital in helping us keep going in this difficult time. There are numerous paintings and works of art that depict our frontliners' sacrifices and efforts, demonstrating why they deserve to be referred to as "real-life or modern-day heroes." Some art organizations offer funds for health care workers to show their appreciation for their unwavering assistance despite the burnout, anxiety, and risks they face. To help some artists with employment and income issues, some art and culture institutions like the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will hold a fundraising event that included a virtual display of various pieces of art. All of these examples demonstrate that art may provide more than just aesthetic value. 

Artists use their creativity to create something purposeful yet meaningful to address the key issues and protocols we must follow throughout this pandemic. This “Maghugas ng Kamay” is produced and composed by BlankTape under ABS-CBN Star Music which was uploaded on Youtube on April 3, 2020, and has received hundreds of thousands of views. It is 2 minutes and a 14-second song about COVID-19. It reminds people to always wash their hands or use alcohol, to maintain social distance, to remain at home, and to wear face masks. BlankTape used a catchy beat to make it easy for people to remember what the song was about. For some, this may appear to be a pun or for children, but it conveys valuable health guidelines so that we can nurture our relationships with others and enjoy important moments during the pandemic. Experts from the University of Florida Center for Arts in Medicine believe that the arts can be one of the most significant or powerful platforms for health communication (Mckinley, 2020).

4) Make A living as an Artist: Artwork as a Source of Income 

In the first month of the year 2021, Inquirer reported that 4 million Filipinos were left jobless, worsening the unemployment rate in the country. (De Vera and Canivel, 2021). Countries affected by the Corona Virus outbreak, especially the Philippines, were put in a difficult situation facing restrictions that the government implemented in exchange for safety, causing people to rely greatly on “ayuda” and financial assistance (Rey, 2021). With the imposed lockdowns afflicting poor and jobless Filipinos (Abad, 2021). This then manifested the importance of having and maintaining work and income especially during the time of the pandemic. 

The current situation made social media become a medium of market, giving easy access to online shops and businesses. People shifted from their shopping habits and buying activities from physical space into a virtual one. The Philippines, according to an e-commerce monitor, experienced the highest increase in the terms of shopping app utilization. “Online selling fuels economic activity during a pandemic” (Ledesma, 2020). 

Not only for clothing, gadgets, essentials, beauty, and food, online shopping was also used as an art market. Many artists utilized applications, like Instagram, to promote and advertise their work of art. For instance is the surfacing e-market for hand-painted canvas, tote bags, and wallets. 

@totesandbeyond on Instagram is a locally manufactured shop that sells tote bags, obtaining 29.1k followers. @totesbyfab on Instagram, in particular, sells bags that are hand-painted by Fabien Frago (@fabfrago). This conventionally displays works of art as a career out of passion, which in this case is a classified painting art form. 

In the time of the pandemic, work of art aids many artists to have extra income from selling their artworks online. The increasing usage of social media then succors the artist to have a channel to advertise and merchandise their art.
