A look back at 2017 homicides in Lafayette Parish

At least 20 people were killed in violent incidents in Lafayette Parish in 2017, mostly the result of shootings.
In addition, an unidentified person was shot and killed in a business parking lot. Police deemed the incident was a justifiable homicide, and no charges were filed.
Police also arrested a suspect after the May disappearance of Jacquelyn "Daisy Lynn" Landry. He was charged with second-degree murder, although Landry’s body has not been found.
The following list reflects known cases investigated by the Lafayette Police Department and Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office as of Dec. 20, 2017.
John Jones, 45, died after being shot in the chest in the 100 block of Hansel Drive. On Dec. 19, Lafayette police arrested Jeantrell Pierson, 26, and charged him with one count of second-degree murder.
March 18, 2017
Desmond Lynn Graydon, 33, was shot multiple times in the 1100 block of East Simcoe Street. He died about a week later at a local hospital. Police arrested Amandues Walterman Alex, 31, and charged him with second-degree murder.
April 25, 2017
The body of Ray Cudges, 42, was found in the 400 block of East Pinhook Road. He had been shot. Police arrested Quinton Jamal Benjamin, 27. Benjamin was charged with second-degree murder and felony possession of a firearm.
April 30, 2017
George Ford, 23, was shot and killed in the 400 block of Jefferson Street as a crowd left the night’s Festival International activities. Two others were shot and injured.
Police said the incident appeared to be a dispute between individuals and was unconnected to Festival events.
No one has been charged with Ford’s death.
May 4, 2017
Lance Champagne, 21, was found dead in a Simcoe Street apartment from an apparent drug overdose. Authorities originally ruled the death an accident. However, in December, a grand jury indicted Jermaine Albert Jones, 23, for second-degree murder in connection with Champagne’s death.
May 12, 2017
The body of Leroy Hamilton, 36, was discovered in Lafayette after he had been shot. Police arrested Melissa Neilson, 34, and charged her with first-degree murder and conspiracy to possess Schedule I narcotics. An arrest warrant was issued for her husband, Robert Neilson, 34, for the same charges. Police said the killing apparently stemmed from a drug transaction that turned violent.
May 23, 2017
Police found Damarcus Bernard, 21, lying dead in the 200 block of Duval Street from a gunshot wound. In August, police arrested Emmanuel Hebert, 25, and charged him with second-degree murder.
May 25, 2017
Adam James Noel, 26, was found with a gunshot wound in a home in the 200 block of Porter Lane. He later died at a local hospital. The next day, police arrested Elies Leonard Charles, 28. He was charged with second-degree murder.
May 2017
Jacquelyn “Daisy Lynn” Landry, 18, went missing on May 25, last seen near the intersection of Kaliste Saloom and Farrell roads. Several days later, the sheriff’s office arrested Malik Davis, 22, and charged him with second-degree murder in connection with Landry’s case. However, Landry’s body has not been found. Police have not said what evidence may link Davis to her death.

June 2017
Skeletal remains were found in the 700 block of Lajaunie Road in Lafayette Parish. In November, authorities identified the remains as Vickie Litriece Patterson, 20. Relatives said Patterson had moved to Lafayette several months prior with an unknown older man. No suspects have been named and no arrests have been made.
June 20, 2017
Jamirus Freeman, 18, was shot in the 1000 block of South Magnolia Street. He died at a local hospital.
In August, a grand jury indicted Tyriann Landry, 16, in connection with Freeman’s death. According to the indictment, Landry intentionally participated directly or indirectly in the commission of the second-degree murder of Freeman.

Jeremiah Demouchet, 14, was shot and killed in Lafayette. A grand jury indicted Roland Malveaux III, 15, on a manslaughter charge. He pleaded not guilty.
Aug. 11, 2017
Christon Chaisson, 31, intervened near the Rosa Parks center in downtown Lafayette when he saw a woman being beaten by her boyfriend. Following his actions, police said Tyler Benoit, 20, shot Chaisson in the upper body. Chaisson later died from his injuries. Benoit was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Sept. 18, 2017
Jaleel Bonham, 22, was found in a vehicle in Brown Park in the 1200 block of East Pont des Mouton Road. He had been shot to death.
On Dec. 13, police arrested Demarko Alfred, 17, and charged him with second-degree murder. Police had said Bonham likely knew his killer.
Sept.23, 2017
John Adams, 48, was shot to death in his home in the 2800 block of Louisiana Avenue. Police arrested his son, Damarkus Adams, 25, and charged him with second-degree murder. Police said the shooting stemmed from a domestic incident.
Sept. 27, 2017
Donelle Williams, 41, was shot and killed in the 400 block of North St. Antoine Street. Police arrested Kenyatta Edmond, 37, on one count of second-degree murder.
Sept. 29, 2017
Larry Brown, 45, and his wife, Madrona “Maria” Brown, 49, were shot and killed in their vehicle in the parking lot of an IHOP in the 3200 block of the Northeast Evangeline Thruway. Police arrested John Christopher McGraw, 34, and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder. McGraw was indicted by a grand jury.

Lafayette Police Department Cpl. Michael Middlebrook was shot and killed while responding to a call at a Moss Street convenience store. Three other people, including another officer, were injured. Police arrested Ian Paul Howard, 27. He is charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
Adrien Jones Middlebrook, wife of Cpl. Michael Middlebrook, breaks into tears Saturday after releasing balloons at a prayer vigil for her husband. Middlebrook was killed Sunday in the line of duty.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a shooting in the 100 block of Devillier Road. At the scene, they found the body of Jacobie Boudreaux, 37, near a gas station. Authorities arrested Earl Darby, 32, and charged him with second-degree murder.
Oct. 11, 2017
Billy Roy Jr., 41, was shot and killed outside a home in the 100 block of Hobson Street.
On Dec. 12, police arrested Larry Odell Lewis, 41, near Houston. He was charged with second-degree murder in connection with Roy’s death.
Oct. 23, 2017
Jordan Dean was shot and killed outside an apartment in the 200 block of Marigny Circle. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jamel Pickney, 32, and charged him with second-degree murder and aggravated burglary.
A grand jury indicted Pickney on one count of second-degree murder.
Nov. 2, 2017
A shooting was reported in the parking lot near the Home Depot in the 1700 block of the Northeast Evangeline Thruway. Police said a man was shot and killed when he tried to steal a vehicle. Authorities determined the case was a justifiable homicide, and no charges were filed.
Dec. 5, 2017
Da’Ni’Cea Maze, 17, was shot and killed outside an apartment in the 600 block of Pillette Road. The next day, police arrested two suspects, Gabriel Breaux, 17, and Demonte Prier, 17. Both were charged with first-degree murder.
Dec. 10, 2017
Lafayette police responded to a shooting at a hotel in the 1400 block of the Southeast Evangeline Thruway. The deceased victim was identified as Gerald James, 43, of Lafayette. His girlfriend, Charhonda Banks, 38, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Police believe the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic altercation between James and Banks.
