Wednesday in Bonaire
Our second port of call...

A gorgeous photo from our ship...

For 23 years in a row, Bonaire was voted the best location in the world for snorkelling and scuba diving...so that is what many of us did here...

Al and Laurie rented a dune buggy...

Blokarting looks like a lot of fun!

John and Kirk look like they're having a great time boating with our ship in the background...

Most of us gathered at the Pureocean Beachside Bar for drinks late afternoon before getting back on the ship...

Al is all smiles, and if you think that he drank all of those beers in the bucket...no, he didn't! :-)

Before getting on board, we experienced another beautiful sunset as the sun appeared to sink into the ocean!

Another fantastic group dinner...

I have recently become fascinated with sail cars! They're somewhere between futuristic and idyllic in a really good way. I'm kind of fixated and have been for a month or so.
I would kill for a sail driven semi. I can just imagine cruising on the wind over some beautiful meadows, wind turbines softly whirring in the distance....

Open European Ice-Blokart Championships 2024

The Open European Ice-Blokart championships took place on January 26-28 and demanded special patience from the organizers - from the beginning of January, Lithuania and the surrounding European countries were covered by a thick layer of snow, which in some places reached more than 20 cm. The search for suitable ice for this championship was long and persistent. A week before the competition, the Lithuanian reservoirs looked the most optimal - they were chosen between the Curonian Lagoon in the west, Lake Paežeriai in Vilkaviškis and Lake Rėkyva in the center of Lithuania.
Finally, the cyclone that arose at the beginning of last week brought relief and dark clouds - heavy rains melted the snow and only 2 days before the start of the competition, the organizers could capture the location of the event - Lake Rėkyva in Šiauliai with a 22 cm thick ice cover without snow.

Close to 30 sailors from Lithuania, South Britain and New Zealand gathered on the ice to catch the wind.
If on Thursday during the training the athletes simply flew on the still wet ice, then on Friday - the first day of the championship - the sailors could only walk on the surface of the lake, because the promised breeze did not blow any stronger. Even the lightest - ultra-lightweights, who have completed 3 races - barely moved.
On Saturday, it was decided for the athletes to advance the starts. From 8 o'clock in the morning, an average wind of 4-5 m/s was blowing, which made it possible to race a lot - 5 races for each group - and gave the sailors speed and racing excitement.

Athletes sailed the upwind-downwind course by zigzag maneuvering. Races were won by athletes who were more technical and reacted better to the wind speed and its turns. Correct tactics were also important, which allowed the leaders to "exploit" the wind that was not disturbed by the opponents' sails.
Blokarters ran at the highest speeds in the leeward part of the distance - even when the wind was only 4-5 m/s strong, they reached a speed of up to 40 km/h. This means that due to the laws of physics, Ice-blokarts more than doubled the speed of the wind. However, in order to reach and maintain maximum speed, athletes had to employ developed skills and observation, especially in light winds.

Jonas Mažunavičius, a local athlete sailing in Rėkyva, confidently won in the ultra-lightweight group, scoring 8 points. The middle weight category was also dominated by Greta Kalinauskaitė, a pupil of the sports center "Atžalynas" from Šiauliai, who defeated Karolis Atkočaitis from Neringa, winning all but one of the races. Perhaps the fiercest fight - point to point - took place in the heavyweight category between Vykintas and Matas Mizgiris. Everything was decided during the last run, on Sunday - after turning the windward mark on the last straight of the distance, Vykintas managed to sail more tactically. He managed to catch up and overtake Matas and cross the finish line first. With this victory, he tied the score on points and became European champion. In the super heavyweight category, Lithuanian also dominated - Antanas Golubovskis from Nida sailing club "Vetrungis" defeated the representative of N. Zealand, Stephen Weir, scoring 5 points and won gold.
TOP3 results: Ultra lightweight Production
Jonas Mažunavičius (Šiauliai), 8 points.

Matas Jorudas (Šiauliai), 19 points.

What to do on Bonaire: Land Sailing

Land Sailing Bonaire: An outstanding windy adventure
As an experienced windsurfer I wasn't sure how I'd feel about land sailing. My thoughts were - why, why, why? If you fall off your board while windsurfing on Bonaire you fall into some turquoise pool like water - or as my family calls the color,"Lac Bay." At worst you'll swallow some salt water and maybe a little pride. If you fall off of your "Blokart" while land sailing you hit dirt, earth, cactus, rock, rock and more rock. I was scared.
So why risk it on wheels? And if windsurfing is as challenging as it is then how could one possibly get this right and not get hurt?
How it's done
Well, it turns out that land sailing is a lot like going go-carting. Anyone can do it. On Bonaire Land Sailing's website they advertise it as "fun, fast, safe and easy!" Control of the sail is a lot like control of a gas pedal. A handlebar shaped wheel steers the blokart, unlike a windsurf board where you have to steer using sail technique. And then a pulley controls your speed. The more you pull, the more wind you expose to your sail and the faster you go. The wind on Bonaire blows steadily in more or less the same direction and the land sailing course is designed with this in mind.
You speed around the same track over and over and you always have wind in your sail - you just control the amount by pulling on a rope. Some real life human help (with a smile) awaits you at the sharpest turn where power goes out of your sail and you may need help getting moving again or making it around that one tough turn. The wimpier you are - uh...me... the more help you need because you'll slow waaaay down for the sharp right and need help to speed up again.
The people running the show are fun, friendly and laid back. You'll get a good explanation of what to do, how to sail, how to start and stop and what not to do prior to starting to sail. The lesson lasts about 10 minutes. Everyone gets a helmet, seatbelts and gloves to keep a good grip on things.
What can go right and what can go wrong...
My daughter, age 10, got distracted at one point and managed to go straight over the middle of the course, over all that rock and earth I was just mentioning. I am not sure the people working there even noticed. I also had a bit of a hard time at the end of my course and sort of crashed... It hurt. I'd counted on my windsurf expertise but instead I think my fears got the most of me. Despite the crashes and burns it was an exhilarating ride and we WILL be back.
The kids loved it. This makes the list of kid-friendly Bonaire activities and will certainly win you some points with yours. You do need some wind and it can't hurt to make reservations in advance. When we were there we only saw 8 blokarts, making reservations all the more meaningful. Fun, fast, safe, easy... well, for some of us. Some went fast, some stayed safe, some found it easy and we absolutely all had fun!
