Le Folkboat est un des voiliers les plus diffusés au monde. Peu connu en France, ce croiseur est plein de qualités et la série très active. Le Folkboat est un croiseur reconnu internationalement. Peu diffusé en France, il a été construit à plus de 4200 exemplaires sans compter les séries non homologuées. Ce croiseur classique mythique a vite connu le succès dans les pays du nord, puis en Allemagne et en Angleterre. Histoire et jauge du Folkboat

Le Folkboat aurait été dessiné par le suédois Tord Sunden, en 1941. Aurait, car le bateau est issu d’une synthèse de plusieurs projets proposés à la Scandinavian Yacht Racing Union qui recherchait un nouveau petit croiseur pour la régate et la petite croisière.

L’association en charge de l’activité de ce bateau est très stricte. La Nordic Folkboat International Association ne rigole pas avec la jauge. De nombreuses séries ont été proposées par différents chantiers depuis 1941, en bois ou en polyester. Le folkboat est toujours produit à ce jour. Certains chantiers le produisent en polyester comme celui proposé par le chantier suédois Marieholms (non homologué par la Nordic Folkboat Association) quand d‘autres petits chantiers le proposent en bois dans le respect strict de la jauge. En France, le Folkboat est commercialisé par Le Boatshop, dans le Morbihan, uniquement sur commande et l'association FolkFrance anime la série.

En mer, un voilier élégant et racé

Le Folkboat a été pensé pour naviguer surtout dans les eaux abritées des pays nordiques. Mais certains voiliers ont fait de longues traversées comme des Transatlantiques. Son faible franc bord en fait un voilier très élégant. Très étroit, avec des passes avants eux aussi très limités, ce voilier marche très bien au près. Les passionnés de ce bateau sont intransigeants avec ce bateau. On a vu des voiliers être revendu la moitié de leur cote car de faibles modifications avaient été effectuées.

One of the larger exhibits at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in Bradenton, Florida was an old fashioned Marina Boatshop. It was so dimly lit that I could barely photograph it.
