At 10 a.m., Hauptmann Bökelmann summoned us to Bohain for a meeting. He explained our task to us. It consists largely of establishing connections and obtaining news quickly. First we should orient ourselves on the battlefield. We have to check the connection, ask the combat troops for news and requests, see which areas are particularly under fire, check strengths and weaknesses, and request reinforcements on our own in the event of an attack. We have carrier pigeons, telephones, signallers and light signals at our disposal. If there are urgent calls, our messages go first. In any case, I am becoming more and more comfortable with my task; it is interesting, independent, dangerous and perhaps also grateful. As personal support I have two non-commissioned officers and four men, all of whom have bicycles. As news, he told us that barrage requests would be communicated by yellow floating bullets, "advance fire" by red bullets. In the evening the gentlemen of the 1st battalion met at the place of the assistant doctor Köppen. There were so few that everything fit around a round table. Today there was another scout troop meeting with Hauptmann Bökelmann. I got 3 very good maps, including one from Combles with every bit of the trench noted. Henri Matisse

He was born Henri Emile Baniot Matisse on 31 December 1869. 

He was born in La Cateau-Cambresis France. 

He died of the 84 on 3 November  1954 in Nice France. He oldest son of a wealthy grain merchant. He grew up in Bohain-en-vermdio  France. 

He went to Paris  in  1887 to study law. After guided he worked as Court  administrator in  Le Cateau- Cambresis. In 1889 he started to pant after is mother get him art supplies. He discovered “a kind of paradise” as he described it. He decided to become an artist his decision  with father to become artist deeply disappointed him. He returned to Paris in 1891 to study art at the Academie  Julian where he become a student of William  Adolhe Bougereau and Gustave Moreau. He panted still lifes and landscapes in a traditional style , at which he achieved reasonable. His work was influenced by the earlier masters like Jean -Bapitste -Simeon  Chardin , Nicolas Possin and Antoine Watteau his work was also influenced by modern artists such like Edouard Monet and he influenced Japanese style of art.

HENRI ÉMILE BENOÎT MATISSE

On this day of 31st December, Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, in the Nord department in Northern France.

He was an artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsman-ship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse, along with Pablo Picasso, was one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts.

The intense colorism of the works he painted brought him notoriety as one of the Fauves (wild beasts). Many of his finest works were created was a rigorous style that emphasized flattened forms and decorative patterns.

He relocated to a suburb of Nice on the French Riviera, and the more relaxed style of his work gained him critical acclaim as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. 

When ill health in his final years prevented him from painting, he created an important body of work in the medium of cut paper collage.

He grew up in Bohain-en-Vermandois, Picardie, France, and went to Paris to study law. He first started to paint after his mother brought him art supplies during a period of convalescence. He discovered "a kind of paradise", and decided to become an artist, deeply disappointing his father.

In Paris he studied art at the Académie Julian and became a student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau. Matisse was influenced by the works of earlier masters such as Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, Nicolas Poussin, Antoine Watteau, Édouard Manet, and by Japanese art.

Matisse visited the Australian painter John Russell. Russell introduced him to Impressionism and to the work of Vincent van Gogh—and gave him a Van Gogh drawing. Matisse's style changed completely; abandoning his earth-coloured palette for bright colours. Matisse exhibited in the salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, two of which were purchased by the state.

Matisse died of a heart attack at the age of 84.

“October 10 1918 -- Nearly 10,000 French civilians have been liberated from the Germans by the advancing British and Americans. Four thousand civilians were found in Bohain alone. They were in a pitiful condition, having been without food for three days when rescued. Tears of joy coursed down their emaciated cheeks.”
