personally, I like loser, unsure on how to take care of himself properly, has the ability to work multiple high paying jobs but just doesn't want to, full of knowledge but empty on experience type of Shahrukh just so that I can imagine Sunil going "I can fix him" and does in fact "fix him"... and then they get married or something. ANYWAY
one reason I like shahnil so much is that I brainwashed myself enough to believe that if sunil stook around the littlest pet shop with shahrukh instead of leaving to pretend to be shahrukh, then sunil might've humbled him and MAYBE sought out the miscommunication between Shahrukh and the pets and they end in good terms (yeah, I'm much of a sunil d rider/nsx to think that). and I'm calling it a miscommunication because OMG, THAT POOR MONGOOSE. no wonder why Shahrukhs FEET (not even paws💀) are fucked up like that, they are constantly working and pampering him. literally how the staff team treated who they thought was Shahrukh is infuriating to me; if Shahrukh does something wrong, he literally gets screamed at, as shown with Sunil. they can't HAVE him getting hurt because hes an iconic figure in the film industry, but yk have him jumping off a building, walking on hot coal, like genuinely a bunch of stuff you shouldn't be making an animal do. as if mongoose irl aren't already exploited enough😭 like I get why shahrukh thinks that having himself some quietness and peace is still getting attention and using the pets of lps for his own benefits. like he doesn't even know what taking time for himself actually is because all he seems to know is being a Bollywood actor and being spoiled. "someone wipe my brow, I'm feeling some moisture" "someone make my eyes blink. I can't do this myself" like what exactly can he do by himself. like I could even believe he was bred just to be a animal celebrity; doesn't even know his parents, maybe didn't even have a healthy childhood. and I'm just gone enough to believe that sunil could've seen that and fixed shit with the pets and shahrukhs mistreatment towards them cuz that's obviously not okay either... in my defense, he's just that guy. like minka said, "he has a word for everyone." That's what I mean by sunil being jesus, like where is that holy light coming from??? anyways. I just feel bad for shahrukh especially since he's a mongoose and I'm very heartfelt about how mongoose get treated for being snake eaters, which means both mongoose and snakes get hurt for nothing but cruel reason.

278: Dur Dur Band // Dur Dur of Somalia Volume 1 & Volume 2
Tumblr media
Dur Dur of Somalia Volume 1 & Volume 2 Dur Dur Band 2018, Analog Africa (Bandcamp)
I’m not going to stand here and tell you directly that Dur-Dur Band is the greatest African group of all time, but if the thought kinda worms around in your brain a lil, well, more to the good. Back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Mogadishu, Somalia was one of the most happening cities on the continent, and Dur-Dur Band (Somali for Water Stream) held down a residency at a top hotel. They achieved enough local notoriety to have a chance to record some tapes, and their music was in heavy rotation on local radio. In contrast to Ghana and Nigeria, the most well-known loci for Afro-funk, Somalia lies on the east coast of the continent, and Mogadishu was traditionally a cultural hub in which Arabic and Indian influences mixed with the indigenous Somali culture. Colonial occupation by the Italians and the British thickened the stew, and as a result the milieu that produced Dur-Dur was cosmopolitan even by the standards of coastal Africa.
youtube
Released in 1986 and 1987 respectively and reissued as a triple LP in 2018 by Analog Africa, Dur-Dur’s Volume 1 and Volume 2 cover a ton of sonic territory, though their core sound is the type of exquisitely groovy horn-driven funk that drives aficionados nuts. The production is nice and raw (Volume 1 was recorded in a single afternoon session at a Mogadishu club) but robust and bass-heavy, and there are also some extremely tasty synth sounds that gesture towards the more electronic sounds happening at the time in places like South Africa. I don’t know what you’re supposed to do with yourself when something like the funk-centipede-conga-line “Doon Baa Maraysoo” kicks your door down and starts boogieing around the house other than join in.
While the band evidently played plenty of foreign music in their marathon stage sets, on record they focused on their novel fusion of these influences with local rhythms. The jittering “Jubba Aaka” matches dense hand-drummed percussion a la Sufi trance music and highlife horns with sassy boy-girl call and response vocals that wouldn’t be out place in a Bollywood dance number; the brief “Saafiyeey Makaa Saraayeey” is a trippy dub blues with fake-out record skips and ululating vocal runs redolent of Islamic prayer music; “Diinleeya” clearly pulls from classic reggae music, but also Dhaanto, a Somali folk dance with a similarly skanking rhythm. The compilation keeps you on your toes; “Salkuu Dhigey,” one of the previously unreleased tracks, has this insistent bleeping guitar figure and shifty beat that makes me think of a like, DJ Koze beat or something.
youtube
Basically everything on here slaps. Dur-Dur Band for World President.

Namaste

Yashica Auto Focus Motor IID
On a Saturday afternoon in November last year, I was walking by 100ft road Indiranagar when my eyes landed up on a guy on the side of the road with a makeshift shop selling an assortment of vintage junk. The guy must have been in his fifties, his eyes were set deeply in the dark socket from where his smudged yellow eyes glistened. He had sleek black hair parted from the middle, pulled back like Bollywood heroes of the early 90s. It was a befitting look for the stuff he had lined up on his roadside shop. There were walkman, camcorders, round dial telephones, old LP records, and plenty of point-and-shoot film cameras. I am a sucker for nostalgia, but an even bigger sucker for film cameras. I had always wanted a point-and-shoot camera because its mobility of it feels like a blessing at times. Most of the cameras he had were in pretty roughed-up condition, except for a Yashica AF. This model stood out, built like a sturdy plastic soap box with some nifty features like a sliding lens cover. I also have a soft spot for Yashica cameras because my father had a Yashica SLR, so my heart for this new find at this roadside shop started to melt. The shopkeeper very smartly kept no batteries to check whether the camera worked. After my pathetic negotiating skills, we settled for a price of 2K.
Thankfully, Nidhi pitched in and agreed on 1K and 500 later only if the camera worked. We decided to take it to Prabhu's photo shop on Brigade to see if it had any life left. We put the pencil cells through the loose hinges of the battery case area. Hit the shoot button but it did nothing. Mr Prabhu obliged us by trying his experience on it. He rewound the film roll motor by pressing it, and it made a screeching noise and kicked to life. But it still won't shoot. So I had a camera that could walk but not see. Mr Prabhu offered to get it fixed, and even with the risk of paying the repair cost, it was worth seeing it through because the gains were much higher than the losses at that point. I waited for a couple of weeks, anticipating whether I will have a showpiece coming back or a camera I could shoot with. Thankfully, my luck had not gone to sleep, and the camera came back in working condition. Although, a few things were still off. The camera could shoot even with the lens cap covered, so I wasted quite a few shots taking blank shots because, after years of shooting on an SLR, you get assured of the lens cap not being on the camera because your viewfinder will tell you so! The camera also would roll through multiple shots without taking a shot. It happened more when the shutter was pressed for a slightly longer duration. It's a glitch that I had no clue how to tackle because at times it would do this even with a light press. The flash would also work groggily at times because you would have to wait for some time before it would actually fire, so there went a few shots down the sinkhole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know if monetarily it was of any gain to pick this camera up from the roadside, but the whole fun is not knowing what you would actually end up with. Took quite a few shots of Sufi with this camera,.

If you’ve recently experienced heartbreak, your prescription is thus: take once a week with plenty of water do not exceed the stated dose. There isn’t a single shock over these 12 tracks, all of which sound, essentially, like Adele songs, but the nods to Hollywood scores, 1960s soul and even her own back catalogue inject the melodrama needed to pull off the more languished ballads. Nonetheless, you’d listen to Adele sing the phone book, even at this funereal pace. The almost seven-minute To Be Loved is as drawn out as a Taylor Swift short film, which will nourish the grief tourists and annoy the daylights out of anyone who wants to get on with it. Can I Get It swaps piano balladry for steely acoustic guitars and whistles, but while the background whoops in the verses might be a homage to Serge Gainsbourg, the chorus is more like Ed Sheeran at his most chart-focused.
Tumblr media
The thumping bass drum and handclaps of Oh My God hark back to the era of Rolling in the Deep, when she was caught up in the post-Amy Winehouse frenzy of jazz-inspired chart singers. Sonically, at least, it’s not all doom and gloom. It’s a welcome injection of Adele the likable celebrity-who’s-just-like-us, before she batters us with woe again. “All right, then, I’m ready,” she says at the close of the song. Sweeping strings, mournful organ and Adele’s signature vocal range comfortably move through the paces. “I’ll be taking flowers to the cemetery of my heart,” she begins on Strangers by Nature, played with all the warm timbre of an old gramophone. What is on Adele Adkins’s mind at 33? The same heartbreak that fuelled her breakthrough, with 21, and shot her to global stardom, with 25, persists on 30, a record of melodrama, ballads and a hint of 1960s soul.
Tumblr media
Or you might be waiting for the delivery of some other artist’s LP, cursing pop music and everything it stands for because Adele decided to press 500,000 copies of her latest album during a vinyl shortage. What is your relationship with Adele? Maybe you’re one of the 277-odd million people who have streamed Easy on Me on Spotify, awaiting a return to permissible (even encouraged) long-form heartbreak.
