'tis the damn season
Tumblr media
features: hajime iwaizumi x gn!reader (no pronouns used, written in 2nd person)
submission for: @woahsamu’s  “It's Always Been You” Collab  | song: ’tis the damn season - taylor swift | type of writing: oneshot | trope: slice of life, exes to lovers | wc: 2530
summary: when you come back to japan for the holiday season, while walking along the sidewalk enjoying the snow, a chance encounter with your ex reminds you how much you miss and still love him.
content warnings: partial haikyuu timeskip spoilers, suggestive themes, hurt/comfort, talks of the breakup, talks of commitment-phobia, the reader's being called baby, love
beta reading: @mxonigirimiya @portfolio-of-dreams @mrskenmakozume (ily all thank you so much <333) | networks: @hanayanetwork @tokyometronetwork
(taglist form / library account, turn on notifications to be updated) (taglist in next rb)
a/n: when i first chartered my list of fics i was going to write for tumblr, i had a fleeting idea for this song along with iwa, and when the collab came into existence, i knew what i had to do: bring the idea to fruition. taylor swift's one of my favs (y'all know this lol), so it's no surprise that my writing's based on one of her songs. plus, I thought of creating a moodboard instead of the usual banner. also, this is based on a two-year relationship i'd had with my ex in uni before i left for the states and he decided to stay in india and prepare for civil services exam. as always, likes, reblogs, and comments, especially reblogs are appreciated.
Tumblr media
It had been a cold, chilly winter in Miyagi. The temperatures were almost unbearable. Taking a deep breath, you rubbed both of your mitten-covered hands together while blowing a warm breath in between them. While listening to calming music with your hands in your pockets, you walked along the sidewalk enjoying the snow. Suddenly, you paused along the tracks and took out your earphones, when you recognized a familiar face. One that you know all too well. While his familiar dark brown spiky hair was covered by a dark green beanie with dinosaurs on it, your gaze caught the man's olive-green irises. You took a step back in surprise, your breath caught in your throat, placing one hand on your chest as you realized who it was.
A soft smile spread across his face as he walked toward you. At that moment, you closed your eyes and took deep breaths as you tried to conceal your flushed cheeks, with all the memories you two shared flashing through your mind. From making fun of his best friend, Tooru Oikawa, to pranking the pranksters of Aoba Johsai, Matsukawa and Hanamaki, to going out on different dates: for coffee, for movies, for volleyball matches, for karaoke. The way you used to text each other, passing around secret notes, exchanging love letters, having clandestine encounters in the corridors, everything. He was your first kiss, your first love, and the one to whom you chose to lose your virginity, and as they say, “you never forget your first love.” You also felt a tug on your chest as you remembered the day you broke up with him.
You had seen many long-distance relationships break, and while you were amazed at how your parents could manage when they were apart for so long, with your father being in the merchant navy, nevertheless, you were scared that you would end up in the same situation. As a result, you dropped the bomb on Hajime Iwaizumi and told him why you had to end the relationship when he revealed that he was moving to the United States to study sports sciences and eventually work for a person he looked up to, Utsui Takashi. The truth is, you loved him too much to let him go. You loved the way he stood by your side whenever things weren’t going so well. You loved being engulfed in his embraces, and more so, you loved being lost in his kisses, every touch of his sending shivers down your spine. You knew he always treated you right; you especially experienced it, but you were afraid your relationship wouldn’t stand the test of time. In addition, he could see there was something wrong with you from miles away, but he never knew what it was until you revealed it to him.
When he heard what you felt, he was very upfront with you, albeit his gaze at you was laced with melancholy. “You know, baby,” he responded, with his shoulders drooping, “I’m actually hurt that you would think that our relationship would fade away as we meet different people, because trust me, what you and I have, I don’t think I can ever have that with anyone. However,” he reached out for both of your hands and held them, saying, “I’ll always be grateful for the memories we had together. I strongly believe that we’ll still find a way to each other, no matter what.” He then cupped your cheeks and planted a farewell kiss before leaving your house, concluding, “That’s because it’s always been you, my love. Always and forever.”
Tumblr media
As you opened your eyes, you noticed him standing in front of you. He always had a great sense of fashion, wearing a pair of dark blue jeans with an oversized dark blue denim jacket over a grey hoodie. He was known to make things look good on him. He smiled at you, ever so softly, with his gaze never leaving yours. Unbeknownst to you, a warm smile crept upon your face, as you muttered your first word to him in years: “hey.” He also replied with a single word: “hey,” as you two stopped talking for a while, oddly finding comfort in the silence you two were sharing. You tilted your head and asked him, “It’s been a hot minute, Iwaizumi. When did you come back?” He let out a small chuckle, responding, “You know that you can still call me Hajime, right? I came back a couple of days ago for the holidays. I’ll be here until the second week of January.” Nodding, you weren’t sure as to how you could continue the conversation until an idea popped up in your head. “So, um,” you hesitated, before continuing, “Let’s walk together, to Sakanoshita and get some pork buns. What do you think?” He grinned at you, responding, “I thought you’d never ask.”
The walk to the store was not a silent one; instead, you two handled small talk well. You learned that Hajime was about to complete his senior year in undergrad in sports sciences and will be interning under Utsui Takashi, his role model, after college. He then reveals that Takashi turned out to be the father of his and Tooru Oikawa’s high school nemesis: Wakatoshi Ushijima. You both shared a light-hearted chuckle as he continued, saying that after the internship was over, he intended to work as a full-time athletic trainer and that he was attempting to become the trainer for the Japan National Volleyball Team for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. For some reason, this gave you a glimmer of hope.
As you two bought a couple of pork buns from Keishin, nodding at both of you before leaving the store, he was about to ask you whether you were currently seeing anybody when you interrupted him by telling him that you were pursuing your final year in your college studies in Tokyo with Tetsuro Kuroo, an alumnus of Nekoma High School, and you were set to work alongside him in the Japanese Volleyball Association. While his enthusiasm seemed to have died a little bit, thinking that you were probably seeing the former Nekoma captain, you then cleared your throat and confessed to him, something that he found oddly assuring.
“I don’t know where you stand, relationship-wise, but you were right, Hajime. I dated other guys, not Kuroo, because I told him about you, and we just became friends, but I dated other guys, and they weren’t you. They could never be you.”
Tumblr media
As he held your hands in silence, a single tear drop streamed down his cold cheeks as he smiled in response to your confession. While you were confused as to what that meant, he asked you in a soft voice, “Do you still stay with your parents, or did you get an apartment of your own?” With a tint of blush hitting your cheeks, you nodded, replying, “I do stay on my own in Tokyo, but here I stay with my parents. However, they’ve gone to Bangkok to visit my relatives, and I told them that I'd be joining them soon, so until then, I live alone. Did you want to come over and spend some time?” He shook his head in denial, replying, “Not until you truly are ready to be with me again.”
Furrowing your eyebrows at him, he continued, “If I do end up coming over, the good memories will return, and I'll want you to commit to me. There’s no middle ground anymore, (y/n). It’s either we get back together, or we stay as acquaintances.” You were taken aback at his confidence. For a moment, you pondered and realized that he had never stopped having feelings for you. Respecting his opinion, you nodded, and suddenly, an idea popped into your head. “So,” you said, “I’ll not be here for long. Maybe a week or so. Until then, would it be okay if we hung out at your place with Mattsun and Makki, and during that time, we can see whether the feelings still exist, and we can, um, give it a go.” Smiling, he nodded in agreement. “Alright, seems fair. We can do that.”
He then called Mattsun and Makki and urged them to come to his house with a couple of board games and to set up video cameras to surprise someone that was coming home after a while. As you two ate your now lukewarm pork buns while walking to Hajime’s house, you started talking about the crazy moments that happened to the both of you while you were away working on your goals. Upon reaching the house, your memories come back as to how you met him in the first place. You then opened the door to find the boys shocked that you had come back, and as you looked at the video camera to their right that caught their expressions, you and Hajime laughed at them, much to their chagrin.
As the days went by, you four hung out often at Hajime’s house, playing different kinds of board games, exercising, watching movies, and catching up with each other. You would even video call Oikawa to surprise him, and he’d whine with a pouty face, “Why am I not there now?” to which you’d reply, “because someone chose to fly to exotic places over us,” with the rest of you cackling and laughing at the milkbread-loving setter. What was seemingly oblivious to Mattsun and Makki was that there were stolen glances exchanged between the both of you, you found your hands brushing against each other often, and you would mistake other people’s names for each other. One day, someone had dropped cutlery, and while you’d kneeled to pick some spoons and forks up, you noticed Iwaizumi kneeling to pick up the same, causing your faces to be a couple of centimeters apart, and as you two realized that the tension between you was so strong that you could use a knife to cut through it, you gulped a little bit of air down your throat.
Tumblr media
The day before you were about to leave for Bangkok, you called him and started cajoling him, “Hajime, I need to talk to you. Would you be able to come over, please?” Exhaling a deep breath, he replied, “Okay, fine. I’m on my way.” You were pacing around the living room for fifteen minutes, confused as to why you were feeling this way until the doorbell rang and you rushed to open the door. When you unlocked the door, Hajime was standing on the front porch, shivering. His hands were in the muff of the dark blue hoodie, with his hood down so that you could see him clearly. His hair was disheveled as if he had run his hands through it one too many times. You let him in, a panting mess, looking as if he had just been jogging in the chilly weather. As you two sat on the warm couch near the fireplace, you knelt down.
This time you were the one holding his hands, causing him to widen his eyes. “Hajime, when I told you that all those people that I dated could never be you, I meant it. Sure, I was commitment-phobic as hell, and you know that, and I was scared that that would disturb our relationship should we go long-distance, because I’d be doubting you constantly, be jealous, and have all kinds of negativity in my head, but the truth is, I love you, Hajime. I always have, and I want you to be my boyfriend, and me to be your partner. I want to go ahead and fully commit myself to you, come what may. Always and forever, right?”
Smiling at you, he then cupped your cheeks, brought your face forward, and kissed you on your lips. No sooner did that happen than you enveloped yourselves in a deep kiss, eventually causing the two of you to peel the clothes off each other’s bodies. Every touch, every kiss, every action had the power to convey how much you still loved each other at this very moment more than words ever could.
An hour had passed since you two made love after four years, and you had wrapped yourselves in a blanket, sipping on some hot chocolate in front of the fireplace, nuzzling against each other. Suddenly, either one of the phones buzzes as Hajime kisses your forehead as he goes to the strewn pile of clothes and not only gets out his phone, which just had his alarm ringing, but also a small box. As you narrowed your vision to the small box, a number of thoughts spawned in your head. “Wait, is he asking me to marry him already?” You think to yourself. “Isn’t that too soon?” However, as Hajime brings the box to you and opens it, it didn’t seem like an expensive diamond ring, but it was one of those even more expensive platinum bands that must have been bought from a jeweler’s shop.
He then tells you, “(y/n), I’ve been aware of your fear of commitment ever since your cousin had a messy divorce, and your best friend’s eleven-year old relationship ended. When you broke up with me, while I was sad and heartbroken and you were citing your inability to commit, I imagined something: that years later, you'd tell me that you wanted to commit to me, and whenever you did so, I’d give you this ring. It’s not an engagement ring, it’s a promise ring. With this, baby,” He slides the ring onto your left ring finger and says, “I promise to love you and cherish you whenever you’re ready to take the next steps in the relationship, and I promise to walk alongside you, because baby,” he then holds both of your hands while saying, "There wasn’t anyone else in my life that I dated other than you, especially when I went to the States because I couldn't imagine anyone else but you by my side. It was always you, (y/n). Always and forever.”
Tears streamed down your cheeks as your gaze met with his. You then cupped his cheeks and kissed him on the lips, with both of your “I love you”s reverberating throughout the whole house. The next day, the quarter of the Seijoh 4 helped you pack your bags, and Hajime drove you to the airport. As he stopped in front of the airport, he saw you twiddling your thumbs while subconsciously biting your lower lip. He took one hand and intertwined his fingers with yours as you turned in his direction. He smiled at you, saying, “I promise you, love, this is not the end of us. In fact, it’s just the beginning.” Both of you were then engulfed in a warm embrace for what felt like an eternity. As you got out of the car and got your belongings, you then gave Hajime a kiss before leaving for Bangkok. If you learned anything from this trip, it was that ‘tis the damn season’s fault for bringing you two back together, because that kiss wouldn’t certainly be the last.

Marvel Descendants OCs
Acknowledgment: When Marvel Descendants was first written in 2015, one year after I joined Tumblr, at the time I wasn’t aware of how bad certain things were and while I am aware this is a bad excuse for what I’m about to acknowledge, it’s all I have really for what I wrote into Marvel Descendants at 14-15 as back then, I was into DC’s Kingdom Come and when I saw them ship Nightstar and Ibn al Xu'ffasch (pre-Damien Wayne), I didn’t see anything wrong with it and as a result, used the adopted family excuse for shipping Locket Lokidottir and Theo Thorson. Now that I am older and know more over the years, I wish I had known back then, but I wasn’t deep into Tumblr until December 2014 and even then, it took me until a while back to realize Marvel Descendants was wrong for that, but by that point, book 5 confirming the ship two married in the future, was out and while its too late to fix canon, I try to fix it in AUs and ship the two with other characters.  Any other issues within Marvel Descendants, I am trying to fix and hope to avoid in the future as I continue writing.

The Best Movies on Netflix in India [February 2020]
Tumblr media
In its efforts to win Oscars and please its 167 million members, Netflix has been pouring billions into movies recently, including projects from or featuring the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Martin Scorsese, and Michael Bay. One of those — The Irishman — racked up 10 nominations for the streaming service at the 2020 Oscars, though it failed to come away with a single prize. Netflix has also expanded its film efforts in India in the past year, announcing projects from the likes of Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. For now though, the strength of its catalogue is still the acquisitions. With over 3,500 movies, Netflix offers more choices than any other platform in India. To pick the best movies on Netflix, we relied on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and IMDb ratings to create a shortlist. The last of them was preferred for Indian films given the shortfalls of reviews aggregators in that department. Additionally, we used our own editorial judgement to add or remove a few. This list will be updated once every few months if there are any worthy additions or if some movies are removed from the service, so bookmark this page and keep checking in. Here are the best films currently available on Netflix in India, sorted alphabetically. 12 Monkeys (1995) Inspired by the 1962 French short La Jetée, a prisoner (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to learn more about the virus that wiped out nearly all of humanity. Terry Gilliam directs. 12 Years A Slave (2013) Duped into slavery on the account of a job, Steve McQueen's adaptation of a free New York black man's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) 19th-century memoir is an incredible true story, and an important watch. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) In Stanley Kubrick's highly-influential sci-fi film, humanity charts a course for Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL 9000, to understand the discovery of a black monolith affecting human evolution. It's less plot, and more a visual and aural experience.
Tumblr media
3 Idiots (2009) In this satire of the Indian education system's social pressures, two friends recount their college days and how their third long-lost musketeer (Aamir Khan) inspired them to think creatively and independently in a heavily-conformist world. Co-written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who stands accused in the #MeToo movement. 50/50 (2011) Inspired by a true story, a 27-year-old radio journalist (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is diagnosed with spinal cancer and learns the value of friendship and love as he battles the rare disease. Aamir (2008) Adapted from the 2006 Filipino film Cavite, a young Muslim NRI doctor (Rajeev Khandelwal) returning from the UK to India is forced to comply with terrorists' demands to carry out a bombing in Mumbai after they threaten his family. American History X (1998) In a film that's more relevant today than when it was made, a neo-Nazi white supremacist (Edward Norton), who served three years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, tries to prevent his younger brother from going down the same path. American Hustle (2013) In the late 1970s, two con artists (Christian Bale and Amy Adams) are forced to work for an FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) and set up a sting operation that plans to bring down several corrupt politicians and members of the Mafia. Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner star alongside. Andaz Apna Apna (1994) Two slackers (Aamir Khan and Salman Khan) who belong to middle-class families vie for the affections of an heiress, and inadvertently become her protectors from a local gangster in Rajkumar Santoshi's cult comedy favourite. Andhadhun (2018) Inspired by the French short film L'Accordeur, this black comedy thriller is the story of a piano player (Ayushman Khurrana) who pretends to be visually-impaired and is caught in a web of twists and lies after he walks into a murder scene. Tabu, Radhika Apte star alongside. Satya Vaswani Smile
Hey @threepointonefourmakesxai ! I went and made you a fic based off of your request. Thank you so much for participating in this event! I hope you enjoy this and I hope you have a wonderful new year!
You can read your story either under the cut or over on my AO3!
Junkrat fucked up.
He didn’t know when exactly, or even how. But at some point this which for whatever the reason he fucked up things with Symmetra.
She was still working next to him in the labs. But she would hardly look at him! And when she spoke to him she was so clinical and curt. More so than usual. So much that it’d finally dawned on Junkrat that Satya was intentionally trying not to speak with him. That she was mad with him.
And Junkrat had no idea what he did.
Maybe a year ago he wouldn’t have cared. He definitely wouldn’t have worried over apologizing, he wouldn’t even bother with any of that nonsense. He would have just ignored the lady, brush her aside just as quickly as she was ostracizing him, call her another one of those stuffy suits, cause a few pranks to get a rise out of her then just… move on with his life.
But this wasn’t just some lame old suit. This wasn’t a faceless nobody who he’d just go on to forget. This wasn’t even the same woman he’d met when they first joined the team, a woman he assumed would always judge him and never see him as more than a criminal or a coward. This was Satya Vaswani, this was Symmetra. And ‘Metra had come to be one of the most precious people in his life. The only person who shared that title was Roadhog.
So if Symmetra was mad at him than he needed to figure out a way to win back her favor or die trying!
First he tried to figure out what the hell he even did wrong.
He was tempted to just go ask her but whenever he got close to Symmetra she’d either glower at him, or worse yet her face would stay completely neutral and she’d just raise a single eyebrow, as if daring him to take another step closer and see what would happen. And while not always the safest person on the Overwatch team he at least had enough self-preservation to know he ought to avoid Symmetra. At least until he had a plan of fixing whatever he did and apologizing.
So without knowing exactly what he did wrong, Junkrat began formulating a way to make things up to Symmetra. He started off by trying to think of all the sorts of things he knew the woman actually liked. In the time they’d come to know one another and even develop a relationship he’d learned there was a lot more to Satya “Symmetra” Vaswani than met the eye.
For example, everyone who was anyone knew she was an amazing architect but her fascination went much deeper. She adored art, especially in the 3rd dimension in all its forms such as sculpture, CGI and architecture. And it was more than just art appreciation of simply liking art a lot. For Symmetra that 3rd dimension was a special interest of hers. Going as far as to memorize the names of many great artists as a child and study their styles and inspiration. Even to this day if someone brought the subject up Symmetra could talk for hours on end about art. Many times Junkrat had gotten so caught he almost fooled himself into liking art too just because of how much passion Satya had for the stuff! And it was that dedication and good eye in Junkrat’s opinion that had helped Symmetra become an even greater architect. She didn’t just see boring towers waiting to be built in over-crowded cities. She saw art and beauty. She wanted to inspire people the way old artists had inspired her.
Also despite being such a regal, poised woman, Symmetra loved to stim. Junkrat had seen her fiddle with a few physical things before, a pen, an object she’d just built, but she stimmed the most with her hard light. It reminded Junkrat of a man he’d known back in Junkertown who would wind up old strings in his hand into all different kinds of shapes. Symmetra would do so with her blue lights, turning them this way and that until they created these different crystals or towers of interwoven triangles. Whenever she had down time, or felt nervous, or found herself trying to focus intently on a project, like clockwork her mechanical hand would begin glowing and she’d set off forming light structures. And while most of the time Symmetra’s stim shapes were just nonsense pattern’s that built nothing, sometimes Junkrat caught her making little intricate crystals or flowers.
She also loved tea, whenever the two of them went out to a café it was a given that while Junkrat got his boba, Symmetra would get her own cup of tea. Though unlike his own iced, half sweet brew, Symmetra preferred a cup of warm freshly-brewed stuff without any sort of milk or sugar. And while she usually got similar things, a few times when she claimed to want to “treat herself” she would order these special brews that came in a glass pot where you could watch as a flower slowly bloomed in the tea or little pearls of dry leaves would unfurl in a nice little showy display.
She also had a soft spot for kids. So worst comes to worst, Junkrat could bring a kid like Efi along with him to make sure Symmetra didn’t do anything rash in front of the children. She always wanted to make a good impression on kids, always acting polite and listening to what they had to say.
And while she wasn’t very good at caring for plants she still appreciated how they looked and their ability “to seem so simple but truly be so complicated on the cellular level” as she put it.
Oh, and even though it could make her homesick at times she still adored Bollywood. The music, the outfits and costumes, the dancing, the movies, all of it!
So at least Junkrat had that, now all he needed to do was figure out what pieces he could use to make things up to Symmetra.
Most of the things he could recall didn’t seem to fit together in any perfect pictures. However Junkrat was nothing if not an inventor. And it was his specialty to take small things that seemed like nothing to others and turn them into something they couldn’t ignore… usually bombs. But he knew that he could figure out how all these small pieces of Symmetra’s interests could fit together into something so great she would have no choice but to stop being mad at him!
Two days later he finally got something and was ready to show it to Symmetra, along with what he hoped would make a good apology.
Symmetra had been in the middle of creating a new model when Junkrat slid a cardboard box in front of her, disrupting her hard light.
“What is this Junkrat?” She asked in a humorless dry tone.
Trying not to lose his cool, Junkrat cleared his throat. “Uh, why don’t you open it up and find out?”
Sighing through her nose, Symmetra dispersed the light from her gauntlet and began unwrapping Junkrat’s gift. He’d done a quick sloppy job taping the box closed, Junkrat expected her to at least comment on the crummy job he did wrapping. But she didn’t say anything. She just continued to silently unwrap the box until she could finally pull the tabs apart and see what Junkrat had given her.
Inside was what could probably be best described as an oversized desk ornament. A shelf if you were feeling generous. Held together by a metal frame a few pedestals branched out from a base. Each branch seemed to be molded to look like shining towers in Utopaea, though rather than the shining silver and gold of the city these were made from a more rustic metal that had been painted orange and blue. And within each “tower” were different hollowed out spaces. Some of which were already taken up by packages of floral teas or little succulent plants. And scattered all about the little towers were photos and cut pictures. Some Junkrat had found of different cities Vishkar had constructed like Utopaea or Oasis, others that seemed to just be the more natural landscapes of India, but mostly there was pictures taken of their base in Gibraltar, and of all the people the pair now considered friends.
“Tah-dah!” Junkrat sang, making jazz hands. “A little something to remind ya of home!”
Symmetra was trying to keep their face neutral. But Junkrat had seen the look of surprise on her face as she’d taken the little city out of its box, and how that spark of joy had yet to leave her eyes as she ran her hand along the lovingly crafted towers, modeled after her own work.
“This is indeed a fine show of craftsmanship.” Symmetra said in a bored tone, not even her voice reflected that happiness Junkrat had seen in her eyes. But as she turned her head to Junkrat, she tried to remain serious. “What on earth prompted you to build such a thing?”
“Oh you know, I couldn’t help but notice you’ve been… eh, off these past few days. And I thought, I ought to make’ya something nice and… cheer you up?”
Symmretra raised an eyebrow, though she had yet to let go of the little city. “You spent all this time making this thing just to cheer me up?” She asked, repeating his own words.
“Also, I uh, I wanted to apologize.” Junkrat said nervously, hand subconsciously going to rub at the back of his head. He could hardly look at her and waited for the other shoe to drop.
“So yeah, I’m real sorry ‘Metra. About all… that?”
Whatever small look of happiness on Symmetra’s face seemed to instantly die as she looked at him directly. For a moment Junkrat was horrified that she was going to smash Junkrat’s gift on the ground but instead she set it down gently in the center of her workbench. Her constant, emotionless gaze however did little to make Junkrat feel any better.
“Tell me Junkrat, do you know why you’re sorry?”
And here it was. The moment Junkrat had been trying to avoid. He honestly had no idea what’d he’d done to piss her off. His best bet was he broke something on accident, but he couldn’t recall smashing anything recently. Plus everything in Symmetra’s side of the workshop seemed to be in good condition. His only other guess was that maybe she thought he smelled or something, but he’d been staying on top of his hygiene more recently. Besides that he had nothing. Absolutely nothing.
“Uhhhhhhh-”
All at once that calm exterior was dropped and Satya glowered at Jamison with a fire normally only left to the battlefield. “You completely humiliated me in front of my Vishkar associates!”
“Oh, that’s what that was? When the hell’d I do that?”
“Last Tuesday. I was in the middle of a call with my associates to update them on my work. And I’d explicitly asked that everyone stay out of the workshop while I made my call. And not only did you walk through! But you were completely shirtless and scratching yourself!”
Everything finally fell into place, Junkrat wanted to say something more thought-out but all that came out was “Ohhhhhhhhhh…”
“I can’t believe you!” Symmetra continued, massaging her temples. “After you left I was reprimanded for your lack of dress code, or professionalism of any sort! It was so humiliating!”
“Hey at least you weren’t the one runnin’around shirtless!” Junkrat tried to joke, the only reaction he got from Symmetra was another glare. Though she was already starting to lose that fire from moments before. “And Overwatch don’t even have a dress code. No one’s ever got on me case for not wearing shirts before.”
“I know, and there is no policies here on how to dress.” Symmetra agreed. “It’s just, I feel like as I’ve been here I’ve grown more lack with my own self-discipline… And my meeting was another harsh reminder that I still have responsibilities. A vision to uphold”
Junkrat frowned. “That sounds like Vishkar talk.”
“Well, I do owe them my entire career.” Symmetra argued. “My education… The opportunities they gave me. My whole life even.”
“Nah.”
“No?”
“I don’t agree with that.” Junkrat said. “I think no matter how you would’a ended up right here doing what you’re doing. Whether you got roped up with a fancy company or not.”
“But without Vishkar’s training I wouldn’t know how to manipulate hardlight.” Symmetra said.
“No, I mean bigger than that.” Junkrat continued. Reaching over to grab the little city he’d built her. “No matter how, you’d find a way to do what you do. Sure you can get trained or whatever but you got something bigger than all that. You got a mind. You got ideas and dreams. And you do what you do to make things happen. And you wanna help people. Like really help people.”
Symmetra said nothing, watching as Junkrat placed the city back onto her workbench, sliding it closer so she could see some of the pictures of their Overwatch team.
“So I’m sorry I made an ass of myself in front of those suites. But you know what? I don’t care about any of those blokes! And I don’t think you should either. Cause no matter what you’re already lightyears ahead of those bastards, no matter how they try to drag you down and make you feel bad!”
“You really think so?” Satya asked.
“Sure!” Jamison said, suddenly realize he’d gotten so loud as he talked that he was practically shouting.
But then, for the first time in days, Jamison saw Satya smile, and he knew everything he’d said and done had been worth it.
“Thank you Jamison…”
“Any time darl!”

Day One Hundred Thirty-Four
Hey, teacher fam, we all survived April Fools’ Day!
Tumblr media
I was actually teaching very serious things, so there were no shenanigans. I kind of wish I’d thought of a good prank or something, but... Nah. I had to teach about extremism.
In APUSGOV, I gave a lecture about civil rights policy-making that occurred after what’s traditionally marked as the “Civil Rights Movement” (AKA after 1968), and then turned my students’ attention to the backlash against said policy-making (because that continued after 1968, too, of course). I focused particularly on the recent uptick in hate crimes in the US and around the world. I showed an excerpt of Frontline/ProPublica’s Documenting Hate, which was eye-opening, sobering, and heavy... I knew it would be, so left about twenty-five minutes of time afterwards for conversation. I discussed online radicalization in a fair amount of detail because my students had questions about how white supremacist groups (and other groups, too, because extremism always looks the same) were recruiting members. That it happens in spaces they frequent- like social media sites- is understandably chilling.
In World, my students and I discussed Pakistan. Last class, I’d ended with the point that the war in Afghanistan is Pakistan’s war, too, but before I got into that today I went over their homework, which was to research anything about Pakistani culture. I wanted them to know something about it separate from the war, so that they’d see its vibrancy and understand what was being threatened by extremism. We talked about family traditions, food, holidays, weddings, sports, agriculture... Then I showed some pictures from my various Pakistani teacher friends (I have several because I assisted in a summer institute for teachers from Pakistan while I was in grad school), all of whom live in very different regions of the country. From that, my students were able to see a real contrast between the tribal areas and the more developed regions in the east. In both my classes, students guessed that extremist groups settled in the tribal areas and began their recruiting there, spreading eastward.
I showed a quick video on exactly that, and the Pakistani army’s effort’s to fight back. It showed the extremists’ recruitment of young boys- poor orphans, mainly- and their training, which- like the film I showed in APUSGOV- is eye-opening, sobering, and heavy... Students had lots to say about that, especially knowing what they did about Pakistani culture- knowing what these boys were being deprived of, as one girl put it. I was thrilled someone made that connection in our discussion.
One of the other things that the video mentioned repeatedly was that, prior to the War On Terror, the tribal region had been pretty autonomous and the army’s presence had been minimal. Again, in both classes, students asked why the army was concentrated in the east rather than the west, which gave me the perfect lead-in to their homework: a reading on the history of India and Pakistan. I love when I can end a lesson in a “To be continued...” kind of a fashion. It makes it clear that the homework isn’t busy work. It’s the next piece of the puzzle, and knowing that makes it engaging for students. So, not surprisingly, most of them finished it before class ended.
Awesome thing? During Block 2, as I was taking attendance, I heard Mr. F saying something about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to his algebra class. He said he couldn’t remember what the bombs were called, so- without missing a beat- I opened the door between our rooms, told him their names, and went back to taking attendance. BOOM. I AM A WIZARD!
Other awesome thing? I was observed during my Block 4 class. That’s my most thoughtful, insightful, full of questions class. And they were on fire. BOOM AGAIN!
So things were awesome, and a lot of learning happened, but extremism is a mentally draining thing to teach about, especially if it’s the subject of every single class in a day. How did I shake it off? I went to track practice in blustery, 35-degree weather and ran around with my sprinters. I got windburn on my face, and mud all over my shoes, and had an absolute ball.

Vehicle with explosives found near Ambani residence
Tumblr media
MUMBAI: An abandoned SUV with 20 explosive gelatin sticks and a threatening note was found in south Mumbai near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence on Thursday afternoon, raising security concerns around one of India’s most prominent business barons. Police sources said the abandoned vehicle, a green Scorpio, found on Carmichael Road close to the Ambani residence, Antilia, had the same number plate as a Range Rover in the industrialist’s security detail. The SUV was found parked outside Shikhar Kunj building, which is barely a few hundred metres from Antilia. It is learnt that Ambani’s security staff called the police around 2.30 pm though CCTV images show the vehicle was driven to the spot and parked there since 1.30 am. After a large posse of policemen arrived, a section of Carmichael Road was off limits till around 6 pm. Security was beefed up outside the Ambani residence following the discovery of the gelatin sticks by the squad. State home minister Anil Deshmukh said Mumbai crime branch will investigate the case. “The facts will be brought out soon,” he said. The handwritten note addressed to Mukesh Ambani and his wife Neeta, which was left behind in the vehicle, said the explosives had not been assembled but next time they would be. Police said the coarse language used in the letter suggested the writer was semi-literate or pretending to be so. Mumbai police spokesperson, deputy police commissioner Chaitanya S, said the “suspicious vehicle” was found under the jurisdiction of Gamdevi Police Station. “Police were alerted. The bomb detection and disposal squad team and other police teams reached the spot immediately, examined the vehicle and found some explosive gelatin inside. It is not an assembled explosive device. Further investigation is on,” he said. Police said that they have towed away the vehicle for investigation. “A few more number plates were also found from the vehicle and we are verifying it,” said an officer. Police said from the CCTV footage, it appeared the vehicle was parked at the spot early Thursday. Proprietor of a grocery named Vijay Stores, Rajesh Singh, outside whose shop the SUV was parked, told TOI that his CCTV showed the vehicle arriving around 1 am on Thursday. “The driver did not come out of the vehicle till around 3 am,’’ he said. Police are scanning his shop’s CTV footage to trace the person who parked the vehicle and left. “It appears to be a hoax, and somebody has played a serious prank. We will trace and arrest them soon,” said an official. The shopkeeper, Rajesh Singh, told TOI that when the cops broke open the car, they found several number plates inside. Till late evening, several police vans, commandos and dog squads were stationed outside Ambani’s residence. Investigators are also checking CCTV cameras at various locations to trace the person who parked the car. Dozens of personnel from the Gamdevi police station were deployed on Carmichael Road all day. What are gelatin sticks: Gelatin sticks are highly effective as explosives. They are used for quarrying work. The Indian Mujahideen used gelatin sticks along with ammonium nitrate to carry out blasts in the city.
