How I headcanon the Bomberman Bros’ parents to look like (though I have drawn Oynx before, I’d thought I’d redesign him a bit). More info about them below cut.

Onyx is a military general with a strong sense of justice. He loves blowing stuff up, and often uses bombs to solve some problems rather than just talking things out. While he may seem like a bossy, pushy, strict, and serious guy who wants to make sure his trainees get to training at first glance, he’s actually a big softie and a huge dork, but he tries not to let that show around most of his trainees (the trainees that do know often playfully tease him about it, but he will deny it and try brushing it off to maintain the “serious” image).

Back when he was younger, and at the time, a trainee himself, he was very vain about his appearance and very narcissistic, and was quite the charmer with the ladies, but that’s only when he is the one flirting, when he is being flirted with, he gets all flustered and reveals he is actually a shy dork. He also had a pretty bad temper (and still does, but is working on trying to keep cool). His temper is what lead him to get the scars he has now. Another trainee got under his skin, and he had enough of it. He tried to blow them up, but one of his bombs exploded too close to his face, and he had to be hospitalized. He was heartbroken that his “pretty face” got ruined, but the assistant nurse tending to him told him that appearance isn’t everything.

He and the nurse had a long talk and got to know one another, he soon learned that her name is Shimmer Bomber; even after he was discharged from the hospital, he would go back there when he isn’t training just to visit Shimmer and keep her company during her breaks. If anyone asks how he got his scars nowadays, he will always say he got them from fighting a huge monster, when in actuality, he got them from blowing himself up.

Fast forward a few years later. Not too long after Onyx and Shimmer got married and Onyx got promoted to General, Shimmer announced they were going to have a baby. At first, Onyx was overjoyed, and did a speech on how he was going to be the best and coolest father ever, then he started to freak-out because he suddenly recalls that he only knows how to take care of a kid, not a baby. Shimmer tried to calm him down and reassured him that she will help him take care of the baby once it arrives and give him some guidance. He did calm down after being told that, but the fainted not too long afterwards. Once the baby did arrive, and was put into his arms, he started to cry, and swore that he the best father ever and he’ll protect the little baby with everything he has, even if he doesn’t know how to properly take care of a baby yet. He said the same thing about every child he had (though when the second child came around, he was more like “This little guy looks as handsome as me!”)

Shimmer is a kindhearted medic who sees all her patients as her children, speaking of children, she adores them (so much so that she had 9 of her own)! During her spare time, she likes to sew, and make toys for children. She’s more a pacifist than her husband, Onyx, but she will only use violence as a last resort if someone doesn’t want to resolve things peacefully, or they dare hurt those she cares about. Her hue can change depending on how she feels, how light or dark her hue is depends on how strong the feeling is. White- default, neutral; pink- flustered, sassy, lovey; blue- tired; red- angry; yellow- happy, glad, cheerful; aqua- shy, calm, concerned, worried; green- mischievous, jealous; gray- sad, upset, stressed; purple- mixed, unsure, orange- determined.

When she was a little girl, she was very shy, often trying to hide behind things, but if one manages to get her to come out of her shell, she’s a very friendly girl with a thing for mischief (she loved pulling a good prank on one of her siblings), , a bit of a temper, and has a love for bugs. As she grew older, she became much less shy and mischievous, and became more of a sass queen, but her love for bugs never faded. She was planning on becoming an arthrologist (someone who studies bugs), but later on, she decided to become an assistant nurse.

During her time as an assistant nurse, she acted as a mother to each and every one of them (especially towards children). One day, she meets a patient suffering with some serious burns to his face, she later learns that his name is Onyx Bomber. He made a remark on how he “ruined his pretty face,” claiming no one will want to be around him now that he’s “ugly,” she reassures him that appearances are not everything. After reassuring him, the two talked for a bit, got to know one another, and it soon developed into a special friendship. Even after he was discharged, they made it a point to see eachother whenever she’s on break, those breaks soon turned into dates, and their friendship soon turned into a relationship a few months later, and a couple years later, they married.

When their first child came around, she pretty much did most of the work and had to show Oynx how to take care of the baby, since he lacked the experience. Once he got a handle on how to take care of their child, she asked if he could handle two kids, and pretty much made him faint when she told him that. She wanted more kids after their 9th was “born,” but Onyx told her outright that “9 is more than enough!”

Not long after having their last child, the two needed to raise money to take care of all their kids. They entrusted their eldest child to look after the family before leaving to find work. They did soon find work (being a general and training trainees, and medic and medical teacher respectively), and while their jobs did pay really well, it left them so busy that they hardly get time to see their kids, but they did always keep in touch with them through Email and BombTime (FaceTime) to see how things are going (with Onyx often ending his messages with a dad joke or two (with Shimmer giving him a playful punch in the arm afterwards if she’s present)). When they caught wind that their children saved the universe, they contacted them as soon as possible to express how they are proud of them, and to also let them know how very shocked they are to know that their formally scrapped daughter had returned.

There’s no doubt that corvids—the family of birds that includes crows, ravens, jays and magpies—are smart. But as Ed Yong at The Atlantic reports , a new study on ravens shows just how intelligent the birds are. Researchers found they can actually delay gratification and plan for the future—a skill only previously documented great apes and in humans age four and older.

Lund University researcher Mathias Osvath raised five ravens for this study at his farm in Sweden. According to Yong, Osvath and his colleagues set up an experiment in which they trained the birds to open a puzzle box by dropping an oblong stone into a tube, which unlocked a box of tasty dog kibble. The researchers then moved the puzzle box out of the bird's sight. An hour later, they offered the birds a tray covered with enticing objects, including the stone that opens the puzzle box.

Though the birds had no knowledge of whether the kibble box would return or not, the ravens chose the box-unlocking stone from the tray in 86 percent of the tests. In a similar experiment, the birds exchanged a blue bottle cap for a treat. As Yong writes, "the cap had no intrinsic value and the birds" and they had no idea if the same researcher would return with food. But as with the case of the stone, in majority of the cases, the birds chose the tool that had a possibility of obtaining food in the future. They published their results in the journal Science...
