Kaziranga National Park, Assam - The Wild Wild East

Assam's beauty greets your mid-flight - the two-hour Delhi to Guwahati flight transforms into a tribute to the sun god one hour before touchdown. A month ago, I quit my job as a newspaper reporter. Assam was to mark the beginning of my new journey. Guwahati, the great city of divine vaginal importance, would be the initial pit-stop. Someone said "Welcome to the Northeast" before the frantic phone-rings and the all-too-well known dash for the overhead baggage brought you back to the realization that this was still heartland India. We took a taxi to Pan Bazaar and began our journey.

Guwahati is a safe place to speed. However, it is rude to pass someone on the left. It's acceptable to drive slowly in the right lane. Honking is allowed. Fresh from a shower an hour later, I checked Wikipedia for Rhinoceros unicorns.

Kaziranga National Park: One-horned rhino

Assam's greatest claim to fame is undoubtedly the great one-horned rhino. The state has more than 2,400 rhinos, which is over 60% of the global population. Assam is serious about them. They take them very seriously.

One BBC report claims that rhino conservation has resulted in several human deaths at Kaziranga National Park, with more than 20 people (mostly tribals) killed in 2015. Some quarters called the report "Kaziranga" (the park that shoots people in order to protect rhinos) very unfair. A few weeks later, the BBC was found guilty of "breach-of-trust" and banned from Indian reserves for five years.

I was even more lucky. Despite the eight-hour journey from Guwahati, India to Kaziranga being shortened by a religious procession-led snarl, I arrived at my jungle retreat in the middle of the honks and cries of naked geese. Kaziranga marks the end of one of the most fascinating journeys you can take in Northeast India. It lacks the same picture-postcard feel as the Guwahati–Shillong drive but it offers a closer look at the communities that live along the highway.

Kaziranga Birdwatching

You will be a great profile photographer if you're a shutterbug. It's time for a quick scan of the leaves once one has entered Kaziranga. It is also, according to the old saying, a paradise for birdwatchers. A friend was going around the corner to settle an innocent business and came up to us to stop.

The tiny bird was wedged between two branches of a dry bush and didn't take too kindly to seeing the city boys talking about the beauty of the northeastern forest while she tried to feed her babies. The manager had already sent his men with cups and traditional tea to knock at our doors at 5 a.m. We were up by then. Soon we were packed into the 20-year-old Gypsy jalopy with a dark green and open hood. We raced to Bagori, which is the western entrance of the park's western section.

Kaziranga National Park Elephant Safari

A pack of 20 elephants is kept by the forest department, with all but one being female. They are used to take safari groups into the jungle each morning. It's an interesting experience. Kaziranga is the best place to start your elephant riding journey if you have never been. A man who has extensive elephant riding experience said that the seats are much more comfortable than any other. The elephants are politely positioned on an elevated platform that allows them to be seated.

Given the number of rides they take charge, the mahouts don't seem as fussy as one might think. Even though they don't have formal training, most mahouts are reliable jungle guides. They are well-versed in the habits of elephants as well as the four Kaziranga biggies. It is the only national park in India that offers the entire range of the Big Five. Of course, the rhino is the main attraction. Don't be surprised to see a Royal Bengal Tiger come by and say hello. The quintet includes the elephant, the eastern swamp elk and the wild water buffalo.

Kaziranga Rhinos - Identifying them

The conservation successes mentioned above have made Rhinos easy to spot. They live in towns. They go to the suburbs to pee and keep their cities and towns--the area where they eat and mate - spotlessly green. They are like most townsies: they are snooty.

They are very private. They aren't easily exercised, at least not in Bagori where they have become accustomed to morning safaris. Tourists can still be seen taking selfies and chatting about election results and demonetisation.

They look like battle tanks, as you can see in the photos. They can also act like tanks when they get upset. Discontented rhinos are known to travel at 40 kmph. A mid-sized car can be flipped by it. After spending an hour in the wilderness, we returned to our hotel. After a delicious lunch, we returned to our retreat and set off on a jeep safari in the eastern sector.

Again, the range is a delight for photographers. After killing a buffalo calf, a tiger was waiting for the herd's clearance before it could have a quiet lunch. We waited, too. We waited too. As is the case in the jungle, we had just moved on to a better place for a sandwich and eggs snack. When our guide got a text saying that the tiger was gone, we drove ahead. With egg in our faces, we rushed back. It was gone. We resigned and set off for Guwahati. We set out for Guwahati the next morning.

Guwahati: Festive Spirit of Rongali

The Rongali festival was one of the highlights of our short stay in Guwahati. The two-day event was billed as the Northeast's largest and most important. It showcased Assam in all its splendour. From rice beer to folk dancing, rock shows to adventure sports, there was plenty of variety. Rongali was a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Majuli artisans were on hand to show how they create the iconic masks. Representatives from the Dimasha tribe and Mishing tribes spoke about how they build their wooden huts using no wires or ropes. Then there was the music. The local dramatists took to the stage during the first part of the evening. Payed engagements were offered to the most well-known rock bands and singers. Euphoria and Parikrama are two of the most prominent acts. There were also DJs, both Indian and international. The Rongali festival was a great experience for anyone who is interested in Assam.
