I've been reading the Tatakau Shisho novels finally, after having watched the anime years ago... drew Alme on a whim.

i think a substantial thing that got completely lost between the transition of the tatakau shisho novels to the book of bantorra anime is the development of an alternate world 10s-20s era setting that lowkey makes me kinda sad abt the general aesthetic of the anime, the story still works without it tho but yeah. the further the anime ever gets to exploring it i think is the fact that you have mattalast who’s the walking personification of the jazzy kyle-hyde-y suit and tie suave guy (hes a trombonist too LOL)

if i remember correctly, there were some dates mentioned in the anime or something when doing the math points to present bantorra taking place in the 20s, and i learned years after watching the anime that the novels do in fact say directly that it happens in 1926-27(?) specifically.

when i was scanning thru the novels and looking at all the artwork (super good btw i love it, maeshima shigeki’s work was beautiful for this series), he has a very distinctive intricate art style and the way he draws hair is so smooth and chunky and flowy if that makes sense, theres smth to it?

but also im seeing that the way the art is composed feels kinda like an amalgamation of art nouveau/mucha and leyendecker, with the smooth textures, hair flowing in chunks, sprinkling of flowers here and there, and very rich earthy colour palettes.

i realized as i was digging through examples to compare that nouveau actually died down in the 20s, replaced by art deco and i dont rly see that in the novel’s art. so in an art history standpoint its not really accurate LMAOOO but yk what i respect the artistic vision regardless, again bantorra is in a completely different world so yay creative liberties

i do get that there may have been like. animation limitations etc etc for them to have to dial back on the visual side of things in favour of fleshing out the grim convoluted nonlinear progression of bantorra’s plot but MAN, it would have been so nice to see them mirror that earthy vintage atmosphere that the full-coloured art painted to convey that heyyyy fun fact the story takes place during the roaring twenties actually

Having started the 5th Bantorra book I kinda see why the anime started with the Allow Bay incident, it is chronologically before the first book, but this does make Volken’s character all the more funny cause like. First episode of a new anime and this guy practically screams protagonist, I mean he’s a young man with bright green hair (most people in the series have normal colored hair too), a strong sense of justice, gives dramatic speeches, is upset about not being able to save people etc.

But the series doesn’t have one set protagonist (Hamyuts is the closest thing I guess, just cause she’s the most consistently important…and she’s an absolute bloodthirsty beast of a woman) and, presumably cause his book isn’t until the 5th one and he’s not even present at the library again until then, he disappears from the anime for a long time after this, then I don’t remember much since it’s been so long but I do remember he shows up again much later and shortly gets killed off by Hamyuts lmao

Why do I recommend it?: This video decides to basically transpose the story the lyrics of the song "Cut off" tell using footage from various anime (mostly from "Fullmetal Alchemist") in an awesome and funny manner, turning Edward into the terrible John the Hellhound and basically recreating a completely new story. The editing is superb, the scenes well match the music and the idea is just awesome. Sure, it might come as kind of a shock to see Edward in this light but hey, it's such an awesome idea you just can't miss it.

26. What’s ONE location that’s important to them?

To be honest, I've never been much of a shipper, not until FFXIV anyway. (It really does rewire your brain!) And it's actually very rare for me to ship anything in any kind of popular media. But I'm not going to go easy on myself by listing Severia x Nero! So sorry if some of these are really obscure.

WoL/Elidibus. This is... mostly theoretical. I absolutely adore Elidibus and I want to ship someone with him so badly! I have yet to ascertain if either of my possible OCs (not Severia, of course) would work with him. (I have certain IDEAS for Noloty, but I have to get her deeper into the story to be sure.) But just the whole WoL/Elidibus VIBE is SO GOOD.

Rishe Irmgard Weitzner/Arnold Hein from 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life with her Worst Enemy! light novels/anime. I started reading these novels a while back and instantly fell in love. They are, I think, the best iteration of the core trope I've seen so far. And the FL and ML are SO GOOD. I love their relationship. I love that they are both wickedly intelligent and both have their own goals and motivations which sometimes put them at odds but always ultimately bring them closer together. I want them to have a happily ever after so bad!

Noloty Malche/Enlike Bishile from Tatakau Shisho (aka The Book of Bantorra) light novels/anime. These are some of my all time favorite books, right up there with LOTR and Dune. And my favorite character from them is Noloty Malche (whom my Noloty is modeled on). The thing about their relationship is that 1. Enlike is a horribly traumatized person 2. Noloty is like his Sun 3. there's practically no actual romance but they are so, so, so important to each other and 4. they should have had more time! I will forever be crying over them but I love, love, love them dearly.

Moving on!

One location that is important to Severia and Nero... I'm going to go with their house in the Lavender Beds. It might seem like the easy answer, but it's very significant to Severia's growth. She was always the kind of person who preferred being on the move, never settling down anywhere. Even her rooms at the Rising Stones were just bare bones where she sometimes slept and nothing else until Nero came along. Nero has of course also been moving around without a home for a long time due to having a military career. But I think he's always wanted to have a home with someone. Buying a house and making it into somewhere for them to stay and live in together after EW is a big move for them. And Severia ends up loving it much more than she thought she would.
