Harry Potter’s Brazilian Translation: The Good, the Bad, the Why
The Good
Hufflepuff was translated to Lufa-Lufa.
Original name wouldn’t work/sound good in Portuguese because of how we’d pronounce the letter combinations
A+ silly nonsense name that works well with the language
Uses some of the sounds of the original name
Name changed for a solid, valid reason
10/10
Ravenclaw, became Corvinal
New name hearkens back to the original (corvo is the Portuguese word for raven)
Name changed for a solid, valid reason
10/10
Gryffindor was translated to Grifinória
Gryffindor is pronounceable in Portuguese and doesn’t sound too weird, so change unnecessary imo, but at least the new name is fairly close to the original
7/10
Slytherin was translated as Sonserina
Original name doesn’t quite work in Portuguese, but I think Slideríne would have been better
Though perhaps they were trying to play with snakey S sounds, which I can’t fault them for
8.5/10
Ron became Rony
Yes, it sounds funny in English, but it works well in Poruguese
Could have gone wih a nickname for Ronaldo insead hough.
9/10
Rubeus Hagrid changed to Rúbeo Hagrid
Frankly, I would have thought “Hagrid” needed more of a revamp than “Rubeus” (which could be fixed by turning it into Rúbeus)
I would’ve thought they’d change Hagrid into Rágrid to make his name sound right, but nope
That being said, Rúbeo wasn't an awful choice
6/10
Hedwig became Edwiges
Original name doesn’t work in Portuguese at all. Definitely a change that made sense, and into a name that’s pretty close.
10/10
Dudley became Duda
Yeah, Dudley wouldn’t quite work in Portuguese.
10/10
Dementors turned into Dementadores
Sounds better in Portuguese.
10/10
The Bad
Muggles became Trouxas
Way too negative for no reason. (Trouxa is a really rude way of saying “gullible” or “stupid”)
1/10
The Why
James became Thiago
Whyyyy?! We’re familiar with the name James because of James and the Giant Peach! James is pronounceable in Portuguese! And if you want to use a Portuguese form of James, Jaime sounds a lot closer han Thiago!
Albus became Alvo
Why?! Albus is a Latin word! It works perfectly fine in Portuguese!

You wouldn't happen to know if anyone has translated A Supplement to the Journey to the West, have you? I found a few online links to the book, all in Mandarin, and have been google translating it to read but of course, I feel like I'm missing a lot of content to things.
I know it is not that popular or that well-known but I still really think it's an interesting and fun addition to JTTW inspired stories.
There are two translations, actually:
Dong, Y., Lin, S. F., & Schulz, L. J. (2000). The Tower of Myriad Mirrors: A Supplement to Journey to the West. Ann Arbor: Center for Chinese Studies, The University of Michigan.
Dong, Y., Hegel R. E., & Li, Q. (2020). Further Adventures on the Journey to the West. University of Washington Press.
I've only read the first one.
Both are available on libgen.is (a great resource for book PDFs). Once you click on the respective links below, select "get" at the top to download a PDF.
I've never had a problem downloading from the site. I know it's very popular with professional scholars. This is because scholarly books tend to be very expensive.
For those not familiar with A Supplement to the Journey to the West (Xiyoubu, 西遊補, 1640), it's an unofficial sequel to the original 1592 edition of JTTW. Please see my article here:
hi, i'd like to buy 6 times we almost kissed ebook but it's not available on amazon like your other books. Do you know when it's available? I don't live in the us or uk
If you don't live in the US or UK, it likely will not be available unless you buy a US or UK version on somewhere like Book Depository.
6 TIMES will be published in: Brazil, Portugal, Poland, France, Germany and Italy.
But we have to wait for the amazing translators to translate my slow burn insanity first! So the translated versions will be getting published later this year at the soonest and more likely: next year.
If none of the countries listed above are your country, I'm sorry! There are a lot of factors that go into a foreign publisher buying a book from the US and to be really honest, I'm very lucky my books are published in as many countries as they are because there is definitely a (pretty wrong) idea in the publishing industry that sapphic books don't sell well or strongly overseas. My royalty statements say otherwise, but sometimes stereotypes are hard to budge and it takes an editor with vision to acquire your work.
So! If you want more sapphic books, let the publishers in your countries know! Most of them have social media accounts and contact forms!
My book plans for the foreseeable future for The Writer’s Quick-Start Guide: Modern Know-How To Supercharge Your Creative Writing are in two stages:
Finish working on and publish the ‘Revised and Expanded Edition’ that adds 18 pages of extra content
Book translation – split into separate translation goals. My ‘target languages’ are French, Italian, Spanish, German and Japanese. The French…
“He talked about how the gods had blessed him with a priceless, beautiful wife who was better than riches. He figured he was so fortunate that, while it was true that kings might be more famous than him, no king or nobleman was married to such an unmatched lady.”
I really am obsessed with this Medusa iteration. The snakes styled into a 1950's low bun? The red lip? The hat and veil just covering her eyes? Her voice, soft and beguiling yet always as if she's on the verge of tears? So good.
listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded psychopath happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.

. . . the auditory and visual imagery that gather as you read the Swahili version . . . How [to] transfer the same to the English version?
Ken Walibora’s Kufa Kuzikana was originally published in 2003 and just clocked two decades since publication. For this edition of Principle of Decision, I chose the first two paragraphs of Walibora’s novel partly to celebrate it but also to appreciate the story it follows in the context of what occupied the first half of 2023 in Kenya—the cycle of anti-government and cost-of-living protests, the ensuing police brutality, and the ethnic targeting and profiling.
I also found these paragraphs appropriate here given that introductions are always novel and always set the tone for a story. In this case not only do the two paragraphs borrow the geography of Kiwachema, the fictional country the novel is set in, they also illustrate the constant movement and consequent contact that is the backdrop against which Walibora animates post-colonial Kenya. The friendship between Akida and Tim—the novel’s main characters—becomes a fable for the nation and demonstrates the exclusionary logic of national politics despite the promise of nation-building.
I wanted to see what different translators’ English renditions of the novel’s opening lines would sound and feel like. Of particular interest was the auditory and visual imagery that gather as you read the Swahili version, and the way these sentences introduce the tone of the narration. How does a translator transfer the same to the English version? This is also a question many of the translators asked themselves. Phrases like ‘dhahiri shahiri’ and ‘miinamo ya vilima’ which embody the particularity of Swahili sounds, posed an interesting challenge. The particularity with which the translators supply the tonality of Swahili is fascinating. Take for instance the last word: It is translated differently by each of the translators below, showing the different interpretations given and techniques employed in English translation.
