The streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico. usually they’re peaceful like when I took this, not too busy lots of tourists. It’s refreshing to go and hear people speaking English after being surrounded by only Spanish lol. Anyway, I love all the architecture here, and the over all ambiance of this calm and beautiful city.

a thought

i have not documented my process on this thesis the way i should. tragedy has a strange way of becoming a distracting, throbbing thing. always in the back of my mind, tragedy sits on a three-legged stool, legs crossed and hands folded on her lap waiting for me to notice her. and oh yes, i notice you. no worries.

i am mourning an island. they are burying grandmothers in backyards. they have found babies in the dirty bath water of San Juan. my great grandmother uses the hurricane’s agua negra to flush her toilet. i don’t know who stands in those long, long lines out in the boiling sun for the food. a cousin? an uncle? bisabuela herself? they’re all getting sick.

puerto rico, as i know it, is gone. and puerto rico, as i’ve known it, is still there. i have not documented my process on this thesis the way i should because the core of my work is completely different. and yet, still very much the same. i am trying to reconcile this conflict.

i am breathing and thriving in liminal space, feeling two lands, two existences, both reject and embrace me. i have made home in the atlantic. i have made home in the hurricane. and oh yes, i notice the pain. she rips into my ribs and i have forgotten how to cry with how much it hurts.
